Abstract:Pedogenic carbonate is an invaluable archive for reconstructing continental paleoclimate and paleoecology. The delta C-13 of pedogenic carbonate (delta C-13(c)) has been widely used to document the rise and expansion of C-4 plants over the Cenozoic. This application requires a fundamental presumption that in soil pores, soil-respired CO2 dominates over atmospheric CO2 during the formation of pedogenic carbonates. However, the decoupling between delta C-13, and delta C-13 of soil organic matter (delta C-13(SOM)) have been observed, particularly in arid regions, suggesting that this presumption is not always valid. To evaluate the influence of atmospheric CO2 on soil delta C-13(c), here we performed systematic delta C-13 analyses of paleosols across the Chinese Loess Plateau, with the sample ages spanning three intervals: the Holocene, the Late Pleistocene, and the mid-Pliocene warm period. Our paired delta C-13(c), and delta C-13(SOM) data reveal broadly divergent trending patterns. Using a two-component Ca-mixing model, we show substantial incorporations of atmospheric CO2 (up to 60%) into soil pore space during carbonate precipitation. This result readily explains the enrichment of delta C-13(c) and its divergence from delta C-13(SOM). As a consequence, delta C-13 of pedogenic carbonates formed under semiarid and/or arid conditions are largely driven by regional aridity through its control on soil CO2 composition, and thus cannot be used to evaluate the relative abundance of C-3 versus C-4 plants. Nonetheless, these carbonates can be applied for atmospheric CO2 reconstructions, even for periods with low CO2 levels.
Pedogenic Carbonate and Soil Dehydrogenase Activity in Response to Soil Organic Matter in Artemisia Ordosica Community

Abstract:Little attention has been paid to the role of soil organic matter (OM) in the formation of pedogenic carbonate in desert soils. The relationships among soil OM, soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA), and soil CaCO(3) in a plant community dominated by Artemisia ordosica, located on the eastern boundary of Tengger Desert in the Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, China, were studied to understand whether OM was directly involved in the formation of pedogenic carbonate. The results showed that DHA and CaCO(3) positively correlated with OM content, and DHA, OM, and CaCO(3) were correlated with each other in their spatial distribution, indicating that abundant OM content contributed to the formation of CaCO(3). Therefore, the formation of pedogenic CaCO(3) was a biotic process in the plant community dominated by A. ordosica.
Particle‐Size‐Specific Radiocarbon Constraints Imply an Active Subsoil Organic Carbon Pool

Abstract:Soil organic matter (SOM) is a critical player in the global carbon cycle and a common paleoclimate archive, yet the mechanisms governing its evolution, particularly in subsoil (>30 cm) systems, remain less well understood. To better characterize subsoil SOM dynamics, we investigated the isotopic compositions of SOM in fine (<2 mu m) and coarser (>2 mu m) grain-size fractions of the top 2 m of a soil profile developing in eolian sediments on the Chinese Loess Plateau. We found that in the subsoil, SOM in the fine fraction, characterized by lower C/N and higher delta C-13, exhibits consistently younger radiocarbon ages than those in the coarser fraction. Such offsets suggest that organo-mineral interactions facilitate fresh carbon input to the fine fraction rather than preventing SOM decomposition. We then developed a mass-balance model to interpret the radiocarbon data. The results suggest continual carbon input from the above-ground biosphere to the 2-m deep subsoil. The active subsoil organic carbon cycling can lead to significant variations in delta C-13(SOM) under an environment that experienced substantial vegetation changes, resulting in time-averaged signals when using delta C-13(SOM) for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Our study underscores the dynamic nature of the subsoil carbon pool, emphasizing its potentially underestimated role in the contemporary carbon cycle.

Abstract:Paleosols preserved in the Red Clay depositional sequence of the Chinese Loess Plateau record information about vegetation and regional hydrology responses to global temperature variation throughout the late Miocene and Pliocene. Reconstructing spatial and temporal patterns of environmental change across the Loess Plateau from carbon isotopes of pedogenic carbonate (δ13Ccarb) is complicated because multiple factors affect δ13Ccarb values and higher resolution records do not exist along the northern margin of the Loess Plateau. To address these needs, we present paired carbon isotope records of pedogenic carbonate and occluded organic matter (δ13Corg) from 697 discrete nodules sampled from 119 different depths at the Jiaxian section, North Central China. Between 7.6 and 2.4 Ma, δ13Ccarb values increase by nearly 5‰, while δ13Corg values increase by 2.5‰. These increases are explained by a progressive decline in moisture availability through time, and there is no definitive evidence from these δ13C data for C4 vegetation at the Jiaxian site until after 3.6 Ma. Comparison of the Jiaxian record to other Loess Plateau sections reveals a consistent spatial gradient with δ13Ccarb values becoming higher and more variable to the N‐NW. Additionally, an independent index of monsoonal precipitation from a southern site corresponds to fluctuations in δ13Ccarb values at Jiaxian, while southern δ13Ccarb records remain more stable. These spatial patterns are explained by a progressive decline in moisture availability across the Loess Plateau through the Late Miocene and Pliocene, with δ13Ccarb values being more sensitive to moisture availability under consistently more arid conditions to the NW.

Abstract:Stable isotopic measurements on the upper 168 cm of stalagmite DG24 from southern China, which is annually-laminated above 74.8 cm (similar to 11.8 ka), reconstruct a history of detailed Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability and soil processes between 14.8 and 10.3 ka. The climate sequence of Bolling-Younger Dryas (YD)-Preboreal events is evident in delta O-18 record. In the Preboreal, four-year-resolution and annually-counted delta O-18 record reveals that the ASM strengthening can be divided into three phases, with a prominent and persistent rise initiated at about 11.2 +/- 0.3 ka, likely in response to interactions between ocean, atmosphere, and ice sheets. In contrast, the long-term delta O-18 depletion is absent in the delta C-13 and annual layer records, which characterize persistent centennial oscillations and likely represent relative humidity of the soil. At multi-decadal scale, prominent ASM failures are generally consistent with periods of delta C-13 enrichment and decreased layer thickness. When compared with solar proxies, centennial-scale delta C-13 changes match well with solar activity regardless of the observed disparity between ASM and solar records, and common cycles of 130 and 300 years are identified in both the atmospheric Delta C-14 and speleothem delta C-13 records. This implicates that during the Preboreal local soil humidity budget and CO2 production, indicated by the delta C-13 and annual layer records, is more sensitive to changes in solar output than the regional hydroclimate variability recorded by the delta O-18 signal. Abstract:Abstract: We compared the stable carbon isotopic records from a loess transect of the Jiaochang in the eastern Tibetan Plateau, spanning the last ∼21,000 years, with multiproxy data for pedogenesis, including magnetic susceptibility, clay fraction, Fed/Fet ratio, carbonate and total organic carbon content, in order to probe the mechanisms of δ13C values of organic matter and Late Quaternary climate variations in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Our results indicate that there is no simple relationship between δ13C of organic matter and summer monsoon variations. The change in δ13C values of organic matter (in accordance with the ratios of C3 to C4 plants) results from the interaction among temperature, aridity and atmospheric pCO2 level. Drier climate and lower atmospheric pCO2 level contribute to positive carbon isotopic excursion, while negative carbon isotopic excursion is the result of lower temperature and increased atmospheric pCO2 level. Additionally, our results imply that the Tibetan monsoon may play an important role in climate system in the eastern Tibet Plateau, which specifically reflects frequently changing climate in that area. The results provide new insights into the forcing mechanisms on both the δ13C values of organic matter and the local climate system.

Abstract:Knowledge of the evolution of pedogenic processes in the carbonate area is important to understand the dynamics of rock desertification. A precisely-dated stalagmite δ 13 C record between 61.3 and 50.5 ka BP from southwestern China, potentially related to soil biogenic CO 2 production, shifts within a narrow range between −9‰ and −7‰, and exhibits a prominent cycle of 350–470 a, independent of the Asian monsoon changes. This indicates that a threshold effect might control the amplitude of calcite δ 13 C variability, likely associated with the vertical soil loss in the carbonate area. The periodic δ 13 C changes reflect that the loss/recovery of soil cover can operate on centennial scale. Thus, the rock desertification in southwestern China might at least initiate 60 ka ago and should be of natural origin.

Abstract:The carbon isotopic compositions of soil organic matter (SOM) and total carbonate (TC) in Xifeng loess-paleosol sequence have been studied. The δ 13CSOM values vary from −23.8‰ to −20.2‰, which are higher in interglacial than in glacial stages. Contrary to δ 13CSOM values, the δ 13CTC values vary from −8.5‰ to −3.6‰ and are lower in interglacial than in glacial stages. The differences (Δδ 13C) between the δ 13CSOM and δ 13CTC values vary from 14.1‰ to 19.4‰. Our results from the Xifeng loess-paleosol sequence indicate that the Δδ 13C values represent the ratio of primary carbonate (PC) to secondary carbonate (SC). The Δδ 13C values were high in the loess stages, and the maximal PC-to-SC ratio can reach 6:4. But in the paleosol stages, the Δδ 13C values were low, with a small proportion of PC. The Δδ 13C values in loess-paleosol sequence also indicate the contributions of the dust to the loess sediment in the Chinese Loess Plateau because the dust contains the PC.

Abstract:Abstract. The carbon isotopic signature inherited from soil/epikarst processes may be modified by degassing and prior calcite precipitation (PCP) before its imprint on speleothem calcite. Despite laboratory demonstration of PCP effects on carbon isotopes and increasingly sophisticated models of the governing processes, to date, there has been limited effort to deconvolve the dual PCP and soil/epikarst components in measured speleothem isotopic time series. In this contribution, we explore the feasibility, advantages, and disadvantages of using trace element ratios and δ44Ca to remove the overprinting effect of PCP on measured δ13C to infer the temporal variations in the initial δ13C of dripwater. In 8 examined stalagmites, the most widely utilized PCP indicators Mg/Ca and δ44Ca covary as expected. However, Sr/Ca does not show consistent relationships with δ44Ca so PCP is not universally the dominant control on Sr/Ca. From δ44Ca and Mg/Ca, our calculation of PCP as fCa, fraction of initial Ca remaining at the deposition of the stalagmite layer, yields multiple viable solutions depending on the assumed δ44Ca fractionation factor and inferred variation in DMg. Uncertainty in the effective fractionation of δ13C during degassing and precipitation contributes to uncertainty in the absolute value of estimated initial δ13C. Nonetheless, the trends in initial δ13C are less sensitive to these uncertainties. In coeval stalagmites from the same cave spanning 94 to 82 ka interval, trends in calculated initial δ13C are more similar than those in measured δ13C, and reveal a common positive anomaly initial δ13C during a stadial cooling event. During deglaciations, the trend of greater respiration rates and higher soil CO2 is captured in the calculated initial δ13C, despite the tendency of higher interglacial dripwater situation to favor more extensive PCP.

Abstract:Carbon isotope composition (delta C-13) of bulk organic matter in soil and lake sediment sequences has been widely used to infer past climate changes. The specific climatic representation of the isotopic signature, however, lacks for examination. With excellent gradients of temperature and precipitation, as well as the gradients of vegetation zone, central East Asia provides an ideal background for developing the relationship between the delta C-13 and the climatic parameters. Analysis of surface soil organic matter from a transect that crosses the various climatic and vegetation zones reveals a significant linear correlation between delta C-13 and the mean precipitation from May to September yet a very poor relationship between delta C-13 and temperature. The close correlation between the delta C-13 and the precipitation is also corroborated by measurement of some C3 shrubs along the transect. Precipitation in the arid central East Asia is a key factor controlling the relative competition or the distribution of plant species with different photosynthetic pathways, thus the carbon isotope signature in the bulk organic matter. Its variation, therefore, can be recovered by measurement of delta C-13 in soils or lake sediment sequences with terrestrial organic matters.

Abstract:Aeolian sandy soils are an important carbon sink for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), however, the underlying mechanisms are still mystery. To solve this issue, the adsorption of HCO3- and CO32- on aeolian sandy soil particles was studied using molecular dynamics simulation and adsorption experiments. Both HCO3- and CO32- can be adsorbed, albeit with varying adsorption capacity, distributions, and local environment, which was influenced by the pH value and concentration. The adsorption mechanisms of DIC were though hydrogen bonds or cation bridges, as well as in the form of single or multiple molecular clusters, which were regulated by the pH level. At pH=7.5, HCO3- was mainly captured by hydrogen bond and in a form of single molecule; at pH=9.5 and 11, both HCO3- and CO32- were mainly adsorbed as DIC clusters through the linkage of Na+ bridge. The HCO3- cluster mainly found at pH=9.5, comprising of HCO3--Na+-CO32- complex, whereas the CO32- cluster mainly observed at pH=11, comprising of CO32--Na+-CO32-. The CO32- cluster exhibited greater stability compared to the HCO3- cluster. These results are valuable in enhancing our understanding of the carbon cycle process and carbon balance dynamics in arid and semi-arid regions.
