Abstract:The spread of marine anoxia is believed to have played a key role in the development of the SPICE (Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion) event and the end-Marjuman extinction in the late Cambrian (∼497.5 m.y. ago), but their cause-and-effect relationship is poorly constrained. Here we present an integrated analysis of carbonate δ13C, cerium anomalies (Ce/Ce*), and genus-level diversity data of trilobites from the North China Platform. Our results show tightly coupled changes between the SPICE, an increase in Ce/Ce*, and a trilobite turnover event, which we interpret as indicating enhanced productivity and organic remineralization, leading to the development of low-oxygen conditions in shallow-water settings. This study therefore establishes a direct link between local ecological stress and trilobite turnover during the global SPICE event. Furthermore, the presence of low-oxygen rather than fully anoxic conditions during the peak of the SPICE event could explain the nature of the end-Marjuman crisis, which was characterized by the replacement of shallow-water fauna by deeper-water counterparts that were potentially more tolerant of hypoxia.

Abstract:The Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) event at ca. 497−494 Ma was a major carbon-cycle perturbation of the late Cambrian that coincided with rapid diversity changes among trilobites. Several scenarios (e.g., climatic/oceanic cooling and seawater anoxia) have been proposed to account for an extinction of trilobites at the onset of SPICE, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we present a chemostratigraphic study of carbonate carbon and carbonate-associated sulfate sulfur isotopes (δ13Ccarb and δ34SCAS) and elemental redox proxies (UEF, MoEF, and Corg/P), augmented by secular trilobite diversity data, from both upper slope (Wangcun) and lower slope (Duibian) successions from the Jiangnan Slope, South China, spanning the Drumian to lower Jiangshanian. Redox data indicate locally/regionally well-oxygenated conditions throughout the SPICE event in both study sections except for low-oxygen (hypoxic) conditions within the rising limb of the SPICE (early-middle Paibian) at Duibian. As in coeval sections globally, the reported δ13Ccarb and δ34SCAS profiles exhibit first-order coupling throughout the SPICE event, reflecting co-burial of organic matter and pyrite controlled by globally integrated marine productivity, organic preservation rates, and shelf hypoxia. Increasing δ34SCAS in the “Early SPICE” interval (late Guzhangian) suggests that significant environmental change (e.g., global-oceanic hypoxia) was under way before the global carbon cycle was markedly affected. Assessment of trilobite range data within a high-resolution biostratigraphic framework for the middle-late Cambrian facilitated re-evaluation of the relationship of the SPICE to contemporaneous biodiversity changes. Trilobite diversity in South China declined during the Early SPICE (corresponding to the End-Marjuman Biomere Extinction, or EMBE, of Laurentia) and at the termination of the SPICE (corresponding to the End-Steptoean Biomere Extinction, or ESBE, of Laurentia), consistent with biotic patterns from other cratons. We infer that oxygen minimum zone and/or shelf hypoxia expanded as a result of locally enhanced productivity due to intensified upwelling following climatic cooling, and that expanded hypoxia played a major role in the EMBE at the onset of SPICE. During the SPICE event, global-ocean ventilation promoted marine biotic recovery, but termination of SPICE-related cooling in the late Paibian may have reduced global-ocean circulation, triggering further redox changes that precipitated the ESBE. Major changes in both marine environmental conditions and trilobite diversity during the late Guzhangian demonstrate that the SPICE event began earlier than the Guzhangian-Paibian boundary, as previously proposed.

Abstract:The Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion Event (SPICE) represents one of the largest carbon cycle perturbations in the Cambrian, which coincided with climatic changes and dramatic extinction of shallow-shelf faunas. This carbon perturbation has been linked to a global expansion of marine euxinia (SPICE-OAE), but the precise timing, duration and extent of changing redox conditions across the SPICE event, as well as its influences on the coeval biotic evolution, remain unclear. Here, we report paired δ98 Mo– δ238 U data across this event, constrained by a radioisotopically anchored astrochronology, based on Alum Shale samples from the Albjära-1 and Billegrav-2 drill-cores in Scandinavia. The δ98 Mo profiles are largely invariant around 1.08±0.21‰ with short-term fluctuations parallelling changes in pyritization of iron, possibly as a result of locally varying [H 2 S] aq in the water column and/or fluctuating reactive iron delivery. The bottom water is interpreted to have been primarily anoxic, but with frequent local variations between oxic and sulfidic conditions in a moderately restricted basin. A novel analytic method based on variation of Mo concentrations at millimeter scale stratigraphic resolution was applied to distinguish between local and global redox signatures, revealing that cyclic redox changes are recorded in the Alum Shale sea with periods of ∼0.3 Myr, ∼0.9 Myr and ∼0.15 Myr before, during and after the SPICE-OAE, respectively. Stratigraphic profiles of Mo, U, Mo/TOC ratios and δ238 U in the two cores show comparable trends, facilitating recognition of three chemically distinct stages across the SPICE event: 1) global expansion of marine euxinia (SPICE-OAE; 497.9–496.6 Ma), 2) global contraction of euxinia accompanied by enhanced carbonate weathering inputs (496.6–495.8 Ma) and 3) general global oxygenation (495.8–494.4 Ma). The first in situ correlation between the onset of the SPICE-OAE and the end-Miaolingian extinctions in Baltica corroborates that expansive anoxic and sulfidic water masses likely contributed to the biotic crisis. The time gap between the start of the extinction and the appearance of the new fauna in Baltoscandia is estimated to be ∼600 kyr.

Abstract:The uppermost Cambrian succession (Stage 10) of the Wa'ergang section (∼300 m of rhythmites, South China) records three globally correlated negative δ 13 C carb excursions (N1, N2, and the HERB- Helenmaria – Red Tops Boundary), overlying the SPICE event (Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion), indicating perturbations in the global carbon cycle. The trigger and process of these events still remain elusive. The petrographic and chemical screening of the investigated carbonates proves well preservation of sedimentary fabrics and at least near-primary geochemical signatures. The paleoredox proxy (U EF /TOC, V EF /TOC, and Mo EF /TOC) and δ 15 N org profiles exhibit positive excursions that correlate with the negative δ 13 C carb excursions, indicating pulses of expanded oceanic anoxia potentially resulted from anoxic deep-water upwelling. The correlated negative shifts in TOC and paleoproductivity proxy (Ni EF and Cu EF ) profiles suggest suppressed primary productivity, possibly by upwelling-induced oceanic toxic events, aligning with mass extinctions particularly during the HERB event. Independently, the paired δ 13 C carb and δ 13 C org (Δ 13 C) variations reveal decreased biological fractionation that aligns with the δ 13 C carb excursions, implying pulses of declining atmospheric O 2 levels, which are consistent with the suggested expanded oceanic anoxia and suppressed primary productivity. The peaks of the negative δ 13 C carb excursions are correlated with the base of upward-shallowing sequences, consistent with the evidence from TOC, δ 13 C org , δ 15 N org , and trace element proxies, support a scenario of upwelling deep toxic waters during sea-level rise that likely resulted in expanded oceanic anoxia, and ultimately led to the negative excursions in δ 13 C carb values and mass extinction.

Abstract:The Upper Cambrian Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE, ca. 497 to 493 Ma) is characterized by a globally observed positive delta C-13 excursion of similar to 4% to 6%. Late Cambrian strata of South China, consisting of thick carbonate rocks with an excellent fossil record, provide key sedimentary successions for characterizing the SPICE and understanding its paleoenvironmental significance. Here we present high-resolution paired delta C-13 (carb) and delta C-13(org) data from three broadly regional late Cambrian (Furongian) sections that were deposited along a shelf margin-slope transect in South China. Our data exhibit an apparent paleobathymetry-dependent delta C-13(carb) and delta C-13(org) gradient, showing decreasing delta C-13 values with increasing water depth. The changes of delta C-13 in South China are in contrast to comparable facies-dependent delta C-13 data from the central Missouri (USA) intrashelf basin, which show increasing delta C-13 values with increasing water depth, but in a shallower paleoenvironmental system. The facies-dependent carbon-isotopic data from South China suggest enhanced burial rates of organic carbon, and may have important implications for understanding changes in paleo-redox conditions and their potential link to the mass extinction.

Abstract:Previous work has proposed climatic cooling and atmosphere–ocean oxygenation as potential triggers for the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, with the suggestion of better oxygenated oceans during the Middle to Late Ordovician. However, recent studies have argued for spatial and temporal heterogeneity in marine redox state on several continents. Here we investigate a black-shale succession accumulated within the Tarim Platform via a combination of geochemical proxies to address these debates. Negative shifts in bulk nitrogen isotopes and synchronous increases in excess phosphorus suggest moderate-high marine primary production coinciding with the development of bottom-water anoxia, as indicated by enrichments in highly reactive iron and modest concentrations of redox-sensitive trace metals (Mo, U). Moreover, the occurrence of black shale correlates well with equivalent successions formed in deep-water marginal basins along several continents, including South China, North China, Laurentia and Baltica. This may suggest an expansion of marine anoxia in low-latitude zones of the late Darriwilian to early Sandbian oceans, probably as a result of enhanced upwelling in sync with climatic cooling. The extent and ultimate cause of marine anoxia requires further quantifying constraints at a global scale, which will enable potential links between global oceanic redox conditions and concurrent biotic changes to be evaluated in more detail. Transient Deep-Water Oxygenation in the Early Cambrian Nanhua Basin, South China

Abstract:Many late Neoproterozoic to early Cambrian fossils of multicellular eukaryotes, including those of benthic animals, are found preserved under anoxic and even euxinic bottom-water conditions, which is contradictory to the consensus that oxygen is essential to eukaryotes. To investigate this conundrum, we conducted an integrated study of iron speciation, redox-sensitive trace elements, and Mo isotopes (δ98Mo) on the black shale interval of the lower Cambrian Hetang Formation (∼535–521Ma) at Lantian, South China, in which benthic sponge fossils are abundant in the lower member (LM) but absent in the upper member (UM). Iron speciation data point to uniformly anoxic-ferruginous conditions in the LM and euxinic conditions in the UM, whereas the trace-element and δ98Mo data show greater secular variation in redox conditions. The LM shows higher mean trace element concentrations (Mo: 108ppm, U: 36ppm, V: 791ppm) and lower and more variable δ98Mo (+0.13 to +1.76‰) relative to the UM (Mo: 45ppm, U: 18ppm, V: 265ppm, δ98Mo: +1.59 to +1.67‰), and ratios of redox-sensitive trace element concentrations to total organic carbon are significantly more variable and higher on average in the LM relative to the UM. The appearance of sponge fossils and lower δ98Mo values correlate strongly with gray (i.e., lighter-colored) layers in the LM. These patterns can best be interpreted as recording mainly euxinic conditions throughout deposition of the study units, with more intense background euxinia in the LM relative to the UM, but also with frequent transient oxygenation events in the LM that do not appear in the UM. The transient oxygenation events of the LM led to the initial colonization of the deep Nanhua Basin by sponges, and the termination of these events in the UM caused sponge faunas to disappear until a general rise in O2 levels later in the Cambrian permitted their return to deeper-water habitats. Our study also illustrates that multiple geochemical and paleobiological proxies exhibit different responses in ‘poikiloredox’ environments (i.e., characterized by small-scale spatial and high-frequency temporal variations), which can lead to apparent contradictions between metazoan fossil occurrences and their inferred watermass redox conditions.

Abstract:The late Cambrian Steptoean positive carbon isotope excursion (SPICE) is a distinct chemostratigraphic feature of the Paleozoic, marked by a 4–5‰ shift in carbonate δ 13 C that has been recognized across the globe during the Paibian Stage. The SPICE may be related to enhanced burial of organic matter and pyrite during the expansion of marine euxinia, which as a source of O 2 also results in a pulse of atmospheric oxygen. However, geochemical proxies have not clearly illustrated how the ocean redox evolved with atmospheric oxygen changes during the SPICE. This study presents new carbonate I/Ca data, a redox proxy for the upper ocean, from three basins. I/Ca values are low at Great Basin and South China from early into the peak of SPICE, indicating generally anoxic conditions in shallow waters. The overall increasing trend in I/Ca through the peak and recovery phase of the SPICE roughly correlates with the previously modeled rise in atmospheric oxygen. Spatially, the Georgina Basin (Mt. Whelan) might have recorded a relatively more oxic upper ocean compared to the Great Basin and South China. Earth system model simulations also demonstrate the importance of paleogeographic and oceanographic settings on local redox conditions, highlighting the redox heterogeneity during the SPICE.

Abstract:The Cambrian Miaolingian and Furongian (509-485 Ma) represent a critical transitional interval in evolutionary history of animals, bridging the Cambrian explosion to Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE). Despite its significance, scant attention has been directed toward understanding the shifts in marine redox conditions and biogeochemical cycles during this epoch, hampering the broader understanding of linkages between marine environment and early animal radiation. Here we present new paired sulfur isotope records from carbonate-associated sulfate (delta S-34(CAS)) and pyrite (delta S-34(py)), along with nitrogen isotopes (delta N-15(decarb)) from a continuous carbonate succession in South China, aiming to better constrain marine redox states and biogeochemical cycles during the middle-late Cambrian (ca. 509-495 Ma). Overall low sulfur isotope offsets Delta S-34(CAS-py) (Delta S-34(CAS-py) = delta S-34(CAS)-delta S-34(py), 1.1-46.6%o,median = 21.0%o) indicate continuously low seawater sulfate concentrations during middle-late Cambrian. The consistently low delta 15Ndecarb values (- 1.4-2.3%o,median = 0.4%o) suggest that this period was featured by active nitrogen fixation and a small nitrate reservoir in the shallow ocean. Taken together, the sulfur and nitrogen isotopic data can be best explained by persistently low global oxygenation levels of the middle-late Cambrian oceans. Meanwhile, high variabilities of Delta S-34(CAS-py) and delta N-15(decarb) recorded by the studied section also suggest fluctuated marine redox conditions on continental margins during this period. In combination with paleontological records, we propose that persistently low marine oxygenation levels and frequent expansion of anoxic seawater on continental margins may have induced a trough period in animal biodiversification after the Cambrian explosion.
Multiple S-isotopic constraints on paleo-redox and sulfate concentrations across the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition in South China

Abstract:Changes in oceanic chemical conditions are frequently invoked as a primary driver of biodiversification and mass extinction events in Earth history. During the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition, two major biological events, including the extinction of the Ediacaran biota and the Cambrian explosion, occurred approximately coincident with perturbations of the carbon and sulfur cycle. These dramatic biological changes and coeval geochemical events are commonly thought to be linked, but their causal relationships remain controversial. Here we present multiple S-isotopic compositions of pyrite (δ34Spy and Δ33Spy) from the Xiaotan section spanning the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition interval in South China. Our isotopic results show that negative Δ33Spy values, together with positive δ34Spy values, occurred across the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary. The negative Δ33Spy data suggest mixing of sulfide from deep waters during the upwelling of sulfidic waters into oxygenated shallow waters. The coincidence between the negative Δ33Spy and the approximate timing of the extinction of the Ediacaran biota implies that paleo-redox perturbations may have contributed to the disappearance of the Ediacaran biota. Negative Δ33Spy values coupled with positive δ34Spy values were also observed in the Cambrian Zhongyicun Member when the phosphorites were deposited, suggesting a strong linkage between the upwelling of nutrient-rich sulfidic deep waters and the deposition of the phosphorites in oxygenated shelf areas. In addition, using box models and stoichiometry calculations, we quantitatively estimated elevated burial rates of organic matter and pyrite based on the parallel positive δ13Ccarb, δ34Spy and Δ33Spy excursions observed at Xiaotan within Cambrian Stage 2. Our mass balance modelling results provide an independent constraint on sulfate concentrations which were 4 mM or lower in the early Cambrian oceans. The probable increase in oxygen levels resulting from the enhanced burial of pyrite and organic matter could have provided a more habitable environment for early animals and thus paved the way for the radiation of early Cambrian animals.

Abstract:The diversification of metazoans during the latest Neoproterozoic and early Cambrian has been attributed to, among other factors, a progressive rise in surface oxygen levels. However, recent results have also questioned the idea of a prominent rise in atmospheric oxygen levels or a major or unidirectional shift in the marine redox landscape across this interval. Here, we present new carbonate-associated uranium isotope data from upper Ediacaran to lower Cambrian marine carbonate successions. These data provide evidence for short-lived episodes of widespread marine anoxia near the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition and during Cambrian Age 2 (ca. 525 Ma). We suggest that biotic turnover and resulting ecological restructuring, triggered by marine redox fluctuations rather than progressive oxygenation, were the dominant drivers of the Cambrian explosion. Episodes of harsh environmental conditions against a backdrop of Proterozoic-Phanerozoic oceanic oxygenation on the eve of the Cambrian explosion could have, by promoting ecosystem restructuring, spurred the diversification of the Cambrian Evolutionary Fauna.
A short-lived oxidation event during the early Ediacaran and delayed oxygenation of the Proterozoic ocean

Abstract:The Ediacaran Period was characterised by major carbon isotope perturbations. The most extreme of these, the ∼570 Ma Shuram/DOUNCE (Doushantuo Negative Carbon isotope Excursion) anomaly, coincided with early radiations of benthic macrofauna linked to a temporary expansion in the extent of oxygenated seawater. Here we document an earlier negative excursion (the ∼610 Ma WANCE (Weng'An Negative Carbon isotope Excursion)) anomaly in the Yangtze Gorges area, South China, that reached equally extreme carbon isotope values and was associated with a similar degree of environmental perturbation. Specifically, new uranium isotope data evidence a significant, but transient, shift towards more oxygenated conditions in tandem with decreasing carbon isotope values, while strontium and sulfur isotope data support an increase in continental weathering through the excursion. We utilize a biogeochemical modelling approach to demonstrate that the influx of such a weathering pulse into an organically-laden, largely anoxic ocean, fully reproduces each of these distinct isotopic trends. Our study directly supports the hypothesis that a large dissolved marine organic pool effectively buffered against widespread oxygenation of the marine environment through the Proterozoic Eon, and in doing so, substantially delayed the radiation of complex aerobic life on Earth.

The Yangtze Platform in South China provides an opportunity to study this relationship, but the basin architecture and paleo-hydrographic dynamics remain poorly understood, which hinders one's understanding of the evolution in oceanic redox state and its relationship to organic matter accumulation. To fill the knowledge gap, a newly obtained data set from the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation shales (Late Cambrian Stage 2 -Stage 3) of the intrashelf basin is used. Results show that the molybdenum-uranium covariation, along with the abnormally low Mo contents and Mo/TOC ratios in the anoxic (ferruginous and euxinic) Niutitang shales of the intrashelf basin, indicate a hydrographic circulation that is moderately to strongly restricted. The hydrographic evolution at different stages, influencing redox conditions to a certain extent, in conjunction with variations in primary productivity, controls the enrichment of organic matter. In particular, the relatively low sea level during Interval I (Late Stage 2) resulted in weak connectivity between the intrashelf basin and open ocean; this, coupled with high primary productivity and enhanced chemical weathering, formed stable stratified water (euxinic bottom-water) conditions that were favorable for organic matter enrichment. In contrast, Interval II (Early-Middle Stage 3) and Interval III (Late Stage 3) involved less organic matter enrichment due to weakened restricted hydrographic circulation (Interval II) and oxic bottom-water conditions (Interval III). This study highlights how hydrodynamic processes affected the marine environment during the Early Cambrian and reveals that sluggish oceanic circulation combined with high primary productivity led to anomalous enrichment of organic matter. Abstract:The first major mass extinction of trilobites occurred at the transition from Cambrian Series 2 (CS2) to Miaolingian (M) and coincided with a large marine transgression and volcanic eruptions of a large igneous province (LIP). Understanding the causal links between these events is important in deciphering environmental changes and life evolution at that time. This paper presents S-Hg-C isotopic and Fe speciation data for calcareous shales from the CS2-M Yangliugang Formation in the Dongjin section, South China. In the lower part of this section (Interval I), calcareous shales have limited S isotopic differences between carbonate-associated sulfates ( δ 34 SCAS) and pyrites ( δ 34 SPy) with Δ 34 S values from –4.2‰ to +8.3‰; they also have high FeHR/FeT ratios from 0.5 to 0.66, that are indicative of a low SO 4 2 − content in anoxic seawater. Calcareous shales from Interval I display at least two Hg/TOC peaks (up to 207 ppb/wt%), coincident with volcanic eruptions associated with the ca. 510 Ma Kalkarindji LIP in Australia. In the middle part of the Dongjin section (Interval II), calcareous shales display negative excursions of Δ 199 Hg values, δ 34 SPy values and FeHR/FeT ratios, which were likely led by a large terrestrial input into a marginal basin from where Interval II deposited. Calcareous shales in the upper part of the section (Interval III) contain pyrite framboids with a mean diameter of <4 μm and high ratios of FeHR/FeT (>0.82) and FePy/FeHR (>0.78), indicating an euxinic depositional environment. They also record negative excursions in δ 13 C and δ 202 Hg (with low values down to –3.05‰ and –1.68‰, respectively), providing evidence for ocean upwelling. The negative shift of δ 13 C values in the Dongjin section was temporally comparable to the C isotope excursions that coincided with the Redlichiid-Olenellid Extinction Carbon Isotope Excursion (ROECE). We conclude that volcanic eruptions of the ca. 510 Ma Kalkarindji LIP enhanced the continental erosion rate, leading to a high terrestrial SO 4 2 − input and an accumulation of H2S in deep marginal basins at the end of CS2. The subsequent ocean upwelling (>506 Ma) brought anoxic/euxinic seawaters into the continental shelf, contributing to the mass extinction of Redlichiid and Olenellid.

Abstract:The early Cambrian witnessed an increase in metazoan ecosystem complexity, likely linked to enhanced oxygen and nutrient availability. However, while improved stratigraphic and geochemical records suggest that the Cambrian explosion occurred under highly dynamic redox conditions, mechanistic links to nutrient availability and early Cambrian evolutionary innovations are poorly constrained. Here, we report paleoredox and nutrient data for two drill cores documenting late Cambrian Stage 2 to Stage 3 (ca. 522−514 Ma) strata from the Yangtze block, South China. The development of water-column euxinia during Cambrian Stage 2 led to extensive recycling of P, fueling elevated primary production and hence an increase in atmospheric and shallow-marine oxygen concentrations. The resulting expansion of oxygenated shelf area promoted sedimentary P retention and, in combination with a diminished supply of P from upwelling, drove a transition to oligotrophic shallow-marine conditions during Cambrian Stage 3. Reduced primary production and limited water-column oxygen consumption allowed for the stabilization of oxygenated continental shelf habitats that supported a burgeoning biotic complexity.

Abstract:New high-resolution paired carbonate carbon (δ 13 C carb ) and nitrogen (δ 15 N bulk ) isotope records of the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) from the Laurentian epicontinental platform reveal a transient negative excursion in δ 15 N bulk that closely aligns with the onset of the SPICE event and the initiation of the positive δ 13 C carb excursion. The negative excursion in δ 15 N bulk identified here likely demonstrates an increase in microbially fixed nitrogen by diazotrophs, or cyanobacteria capable of N 2 fixation, in the marine system due to a reduction in bioavailable recycled N through several processes at the onset of the biogeochemical event. Expansion of reducing environments during the initiation of the SPICE event would have liberated phosphorous previously bound to organic matter and/or marine iron oxy-hydroxides and simultaneously promoted an expansion of denitrification in oxygen-poor settings that would have reduced bioavailable N in the marine system. The enhanced delivery of phosphorous to the photic zone would have stimulated primary productivity, which would have also put additional pressure on the marine bioavailable N budget. These feedback systems would have combined to lower the marine N:P ratio such that diazotrophs would become a significant contributor to the total bioavailable N in the marine realm. The data presented here are the first demonstration of this significant perturbation to local marine nutrient cycling during the onset of the SPICE event and provide new insight into what may ultimately be a consistent set of biogeochemical triggers for major Paleozoic biogeochemical events.

Abstract:The role of oxygen as a driver for early animal evolution is widely debated. During the Cambrian explosion, episodic radiations of major animal phyla occurred coincident with repeated carbon isotope fluctuations. However, the driver of these isotope fluctuations and potential links to environmental oxygenation are unclear. Here we report high-resolution carbon and sulfur isotope data for marine carbonates from the southeastern Siberian Platform that document the canonical explosive phase of the Cambrian radiation from ~524 to ~514 Myr ago. These analyses demonstrate a strong positive covariation between carbonate δ13C and carbonate-associated sulfate δ34S through five isotope cycles. Biogeochemical modelling suggests that this isotopic coupling reflects periodic oscillations in the atmospheric O2 and the extent of shallow-ocean oxygenation. Episodic maxima in the biodiversity of animal phyla directly coincided with these extreme oxygen perturbations. Conversely, the subsequent Botoman–Toyonian animal extinction events (~514 to ~512 Myr ago) coincided with decoupled isotope records that suggest a shrinking marine sulfate reservoir and expanded shallow marine anoxia. We suggest that fluctuations in oxygen availability in the shallow marine realm exerted a primary control on the timing and tempo of biodiversity radiations at a crucial phase in the early history of animal life.

Abstract:The early–middle Cambrian (Fortunian to Age 4) is characterized by a significant increase in metazoan diversification. Furthermore, this interval is marked by a prominent environmental and ecological expansion of arthropod- and echinoderm-rich biotas. Recent redox work has suggested that this shift occurred during stable or decreasing marine oxygen levels, suggesting that these paleobiological and paleoecological transformations were decoupled from a redox control. We tested this idea by conducting new paleoredox analyses on Age 2–Age 4 Cambrian outer shelf (Jiuqunao-Wangjiaping), slope (Wuhe-Geyi), and basinal (Zhalagou) sections of the South China Craton. Multiple sections indicate that mid-depth waters transitioned from anoxic conditions during Cambrian Age 2 to stable oxic conditions during Cambrian Age 4. These findings suggest a stepwise expansion of oxic waters from shallow to deep settings during the early–middle Cambrian, consistent with a redox control of metazoan diversification and ecological expansion. More broadly, despite the surge in redox work over the past decade, this study highlights the need for continued coupled redox and paleontological studies to directly test models about the links between the evolution of animals, ecosystems, and marine redox conditions.

Abstract:The Ediacaran Period (∼635 to 541 Ma) witnessed the early diversification and radiation of metazoans, in the form of the Ediacaran Biota. This biological revolution, beginning at ∼575 Ma, has been widely attributed to a temporally restricted episode of deeper ocean oxygenation, potentially caused by a contemporaneous rise in atmospheric oxygen levels. However, quantitative geochemical-record-driven estimates of Ediacaran atmospheric and oceanic redox evolution are lacking, and hence possible links between oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation remain speculative. Here, after screening for possible post-depositional alteration, we utilize paleogeographically-diverse carbon and sulfur isotope records from South China, Oman and USA-Mexico, to develop a biogeochemical isotope mass balance model to quantify Ediacaran atmospheric oxygen and oceanic sulfate evolution. Model results from all three continents indicate that Ediacaran atmospheric oxygen levels rose monotonically between ∼630 Ma and ∼590 Ma, and subsequently remained relatively stable at around 0.6 present atmospheric level for the remainder of the Ediacaran. By contrast, the marine sulfate reservoir appears to have remained relatively stable before ∼575 Ma, with a subsequent large pulse where sulfate concentrations rose to ∼8 mM. These quantitative results indicate that Ediacaran oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation were decoupled, which is consistent with published geochemical records. We propose that the early Ediacaran rise of atmospheric oxygen levels, driven by increased net burial of organic carbon and pyrite, may not have established widespread deep-ocean oxygenation. Instead, later pulsed input of oxidizing power (mainly sulfate) from the continents drove transient episodes of seafloor oxygenation that accompanied radiations of the Ediacaran Biota.

Abstract:Reconstructing the oxygenation history of Earth's oceans during the Ediacaran period (635 to 539 million years ago) has been challenging, and this has led to a polarizing debate about the environmental conditions that played host to the rise of animals. One focal point of this debate is the largest negative inorganic C-isotope excursion recognized in the geologic record, the Shuram excursion, and whether this relic tracks the global-scale oxygenation of Earth's deep oceans. To help inform this debate, we conducted a detailed geochemical investigation of two siliciclastic-dominated successions from Oman deposited through the Shuram Formation. Iron speciation data from both successions indicate formation beneath an intermittently anoxic local water column. Authigenic thallium (Tl) isotopic compositions leached from both successions are indistinguishable from bulk upper continental crust (ε205 TlA ≈ -2) and, by analogy with modern equivalents, likely representative of the ancient seawater ε205 Tl value. A crustal seawater ε205 Tl value requires limited manganese (Mn) oxide burial on the ancient seafloor, and by extension widely distributed anoxic sediment porewaters. This inference is supported by muted redox-sensitive element enrichments (V, Mo, and U) and consistent with some combination of widespread (a) bottom water anoxia and (b) high sedimentary organic matter loading. Contrary to a classical hypothesis, our interpretations place the Shuram excursion, and any coeval animal evolutionary events, in a predominantly anoxic global ocean.
