Abstract:Annually laminated sediments in Lake Xiaolongwan, northeast China, contain a suite of n-alkanes (C17–C33) with a strong odd over even carbon number predominance. Biomarker n-alkane proxies (average chain length, Paq ratio, grass/tree ratio, carbon preference index and compound-specific δ13C values) were used to reconstruct climate changes that occurred over the last millennium. Compound-specific δ13C values show large differences between the distinctive chain length groups of n-alkanes that originate from algae, aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial plants. Long-chain n-alkanes (C27–C33) are predominantly derived from leaf wax lipids in the forest. Variations in long-chain n-alkane δ13C values may mainly record water-use efficiency, inasmuch as the contribution from C4 plants is negligible in the Lake Xiaolongwan catchment. Short- and middle-chain n-alkanes are mainly from algae and aquatic plants. They are strongly depleted in 13C. This feature may be linked to a methane-derived, negative δ13C pool and lake overturn, which regulates dinoflagellate blooms. Parallel fluctuations are observed in δ13C27–31 values, Paq, and the grass/tree ratio throughout the record. Variations in δ13C27–31 values and Paq are in agreement with historical documents on summer and winter climate conditions. They support earlier suggestions that δ13C values in the long-chain n-alkanes and Paq may be useful indicators of effective precipitation or drought stress in this forested area. The δ13C27–31 index and Paq show distinct decadal variations. Periods with high δ13C27–31 values and a low Paq index correspond with the warm phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Values are reversed during PDO cool phases. At the decadal timescale, summer monsoon rainfall in northeast China over the last millennium may have been regulated mainly by the PDO.

Abstract:The effects of orbital forcing on the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) after the mid -Pleistocene transition are controversial. Chinese cave 618O records only show low-latitude similar to 20 k.y. cycles, while pedogenic proxy records from Chinese loess are dominated by high -latitude 100 k.y. cycles. This discrepancy may result from the multicomponent origin of proxies, particularly for pedogenic signals in loess deposits, where the primary climatic signals are modified by pedogenic smoothing, leaching, and changes in sedimentation rate, and the latter are also being forced by 100 k.y. cycles. We present an EASM record spanning the past 470 k.y. from the central Chinese Loess Plateau based on the 613C values of land snail shells (613Cshell), which eliminates the influence of the above processes and exclusively records the local past EASM precipitation. The 613Cshell record is dominated by the 100 k.y. cycle, with more depleted values during interglacials compared to glacials. At the end of marine isotope stage (MIS) 11, 613Cshell-based precipitation remained at an interglacial level following the MIS 11 super-interglacial climate in the Northern Hemisphere, although a gla-cial period had commenced on a global basis. Overall, our 613Cshell record is highly coupled with high-northern-latitude ice-volume variations, possibly supporting the high-latitude forcing of the EASM.

Abstract:Paleoclimatic records of sub-annual to interannual resolution are valuable for the study of climatic forcing mechanisms but these records are rare in terrestrial settings. Here, we show that high-resolution stable carbon isotope data within shells of land snails (δ 13 C shell ) living in a C 3 plant-dominated community can be an indicator of growing season precipitation (GSP) amount. We collected modern land snails along two wet-dry climate gradients from northern Iran and the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), where the precipitation is mainly distributed in the boreal winter and boreal summer seasons, respectively. Our results indicate a common pattern of δ 13 C shell values increasing with aridity, driven by water stress in the local plant community. In contrast, temperature has a weak and inverse effect on δ 13 C shell values in these two regions, suggesting that rainfall amount is the primary control on δ 13 C shell for this modern comparison. Furthermore, we present a δ 13 C shell record covering the middle Holocene to the middle Pleistocene from the CLP. This record suggests that most of the average δ 13 C shell values from interglacial paleosol layers are lower than those from the adjacent glacial loess strata, suggesting higher GSP. However, the reconstructed glacial-interglacial difference in GSP is smaller than that estimated by other proxy indicators. This is likely due to the dietary preference of land snails and/or the sparse nature of this dataset, which might not be sufficient to capture the glacial-interglacial history of rainfall on the CLP. Large datasets with good taxonomic control and high stratigraphic resolution will be required to better describe the glacial-interglacial differences.

Abstract:Modern investigations have shown that oxygen and carbon isotopes of land snail shells are useful indicators of climate and vegetation in monsoonal regions. However, stable isotope studies on snail fossil shells have seldom been done, and the reliability of those indicators needs further verification. Moreover, intrashell stable isotope analysis of individual snails is rather scarce, and seasonal variation in the glacial‐interglacial monsoonal climate remains unclear. Therefore, we performed δ18O and δ13C analyses on fossil shells of cold‐aridiphilous Cathaica pulveratrix and subhumidiphilous Metodontia yantaiensis from the loess section over the last two glacial cycles at the Beiyao site on the southern Chinese Loess Plateau. The δ18O values of fossil shells reflected monsoonal rainfall amounts and more rainfall during MIS3 and MIS7 than during MIS4 and MIS6. Meanwhile, the δ13C values of fossil shells indicated the relative abundance of C3/C4 plants and more C4 biomass during MIS3 and MIS7 than during MIS4 and MIS6. The δ18O and δ13C values of the two species from the same horizon are significantly different, reflecting differences in their growing season and/or physiological habits. Intrashell variations in stable isotopes showed that climatic seasonality was much stronger during the glacial periods than during the interglacials. Our findings provide an environmental background for explaining past human activities at the Beiyao site. The investigation of stone artifacts showed that ancient human activities were relatively strong during MIS3 and MIS7. Abstract:Carbon isotope compositions of land snail shells (δ13Cshell) are shown to be indicative of local climate conditions. However, it is largely unknown how the responses of δ13Cshell to climatic factors changes amongst different species. In this study, we collected 3 species of land snail shells across the East Asian monsoon region of China to explore the overall relationship between δ13Cshell as well as the response of individual species to the regional climate. Results show that, whereas all species collectively can provide a consensus relation between δ13Cshell and local climatic factors such as temperature and precipitation; the response of individual species to the fluctuations of these factors is not uniform. Specifically, while the southerly species Bradybaena similaris exhibits robust δ13Cshell – mean precipitation correlation in both linearity and sensitivity, a common northerly species, Cathaica fasciola, only finds limited utility as a climate indicator, particularly for precipitation. Meanwhile, the south-central species Acusta ravida appears to be able to faithfully record past climate conditions despite showing a wider distribution and a broader habitat. Such species-dependent nature in the relations between δ13Cshell and local climatic factors can be attributed to the effect of ingested carbonate and variations in eco-physiological factors of different species, and is expected to be widespread, suggesting the need to be taken into consideration for future studies.
Stable Carbon and Oxygen Isotopic Composition of Modern Land Snails along a Precipitation Gradient in the Mid-Latitude East Asian Monsoon Region of China

Abstract:The stable oxygen and carbon isotope composition (delta O-18(shell) and delta C-13(shell)) of land snail shells preserved in Chinese eolian loess deposits have the potential to reconstruct past changes in the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) since the late Oligocene. To assess the potential of delta O-18(shell) and delta C-13(shell) for the semi-quantitative reconstruction of past variations of the EASM, we studied modern snails and the corresponding vegetation composition of three distinct ecosystems (woodland, grassland and mountains), spanning a large rainfall gradient (1781403 mm) in the mid-latitude East Asian monsoon region. The results show that different snail species in the three ecosystems have significantly different values of delta O-18(shell) and delta C-13(shell). The snails in woodland from the eastern plain area have significantly lower delta O-18(shell) and delta C-13(shell) values than those of snails in grassland from the Chinese Loess Plateau, and the snails from the Qinba Mountains region have values intermediate between the two. Systematic variations of the delta C-13 of snail shells, body tissues and local plants are evident along the rainfall gradient, indicating that delta C-13(shell) is mainly influenced by the delta C-13 of ingested plants, which is controlled by the EASM. We confirm that delta C-13(shell) is a reliable precipitation proxy and we obtained a new empirical equation (delta C-13(shell) = -0.0030(+/- 0.0003) MAP - 8.80(+/- 0.32), r = -0.76, n = 74, p < 0.001) for the relationship between delta C-13(shell) and mean annual precipitation, which is based on the results of the present study, together with those of Bao et al. (2018). We infer that delta O-18(shell) is influenced by precipitation delta O-18, and that here is a significant relationship between d18Oshell and mean annual precipitation (delta O-18(shell) = -0.0028(+/- 0.0008) MAP - 1.32(+/- 0.58), r = -0.65, p < 0.05, n = 21), possibly because of the rainfall amount effect in the study region. In addition, temperature and evaporation associated with relative humidity play non-negligible roles in determining delta O-18(shell), and their effects should be considered before using the delta O-18 of fossil snail shells to reconstruct precipitation delta O-18 and/or rainfall amount.

Abstract:Independent inference of the Asian winter monsoon (AWM), albeit achieved at several sparse sites, has reached no consensus for its variability through the Holocene. A sediment core from the northern coast of the South China Sea (SCS) was utilized to analyze organic biomarkers at (bi‐)decadal resolution, unveiling how SCS oceanic conditions fingerprint the AWM signal. Generally, alkenone sea surface temperature (SST) record, resembling the temporal structures of integrated tropical SST over the past 7,500 years, shows abnormal cool temperatures (up to ~4 °C) during the Little Ice Age and between ~1,200 and 2,500 years BP, when windborne terrigenous hopane compounds experienced considerable increases superimposed on a general increasing trend. Our results, together with augmented SST gradient between the SCS coast and open ocean, consistently suggest AWM strengthening toward the late Holocene. An intensified AWM during cold intervals like the Little Ice Age would have provided strong positive feedback to enhance coastal cooling.

Abstract:Coastal regions of the northern South China Sea (SCS) strongly interact with the Asian monsoon circulation (AMC). Thus, variations of sea surface temperature (SST) here are newly suggested to document AMC changes in an effective manner, but additional physical parameters of oceanic conditions, probably also in relation to the AMC system, remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) from a well-dated sediment core YJ, retrieved at the northern SCS coast, to further scrutinize the intrinsic response of water column to winter AMC strength. It shows that within the time frame of past ∼1,000 years, the tetraether index of lipids with 86 carbon atoms ( TEX 86 ) and published alkenone ( U 37 K ′ ) temperature records together confirm a reduced thermal gradient during the Little Ice Age (LIA), in comparison to that during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). Considering concurrent variations of the branched and isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) and the ratio of archaeol to caldarchaeol (ACE), for example, with decreased values (<∼0.3) for the former and relatively high values for the latter at the LIA, indicative of stratification and salinity changes, respectively, these multiple lines of evidence thereby call for well mixing of onsite water at site YJ correspondingly. Our results suggest that winter AMC strength is a critical factor for mixing subsurface waters and modifying thermal/saline conditions at the northern SCS coasts through the last millennium and also, perhaps, on longer timescales.
Records of melt water pulses and climate events from the northern South China Sea since late Last Glacial Maximum:Implication of terrigenous input

Abstract:The distribution andδ13C composition of long chain n-alcohols from the late Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the Holocene in Site 4B core sediments from the continental slope of the northern South China Sea was discussed in this paper. The distribution of carbon preference index (CPI, 10.49~24.56), average chain length (ACL, 28.91~29.99) and average carbon isotope (–28.85‰±0.97‰ to–32.92‰±1.38‰) of long chain n-alcohols reflected a C3 higher plant source and a dominated <br> terrigenous input of organic materials into the sediments. The relatively low terrigenous input was related to the extensive melt water pulse (MWP) events (19ka-MWP, MWP-1A and MWP-1B), and B?lling-Aller?d (B/A) warming event from the end of the LGM to the end of the Late Pleistocene in Site 4B sediments (65~102cm, 19.343 to ~ 11.636 ka BP) without glacial period/interglacial period cycle. However, the distribution of the terrigenous input reflected intensified/weakened winter monsoon/summer monsoon cycle during the late LGM and Holocene, with the winter monsoon maximum periods recorded during the late LGM and the summer monsoon maximum periods in about 9.940ka BP. Compared with the cycle climate change of global glacial period/interglacial period, the distribution of the terrigenous input from the end of the LGM to the end of the Late Pleistocene in Site 4B sediments (19.343 to~11.636 ka BP) reflected ambiguous regional comparability, probably related to the regional environmental activity in low latitudes.
Major and Trace Elements of A Peat Core from Yunnan, Southwest China: Implications for Paleoclimatic Proxies

Abstract:This study examines the accumulation of major and trace elements in peat deposits in central Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The ashes of an approximately 2 m long core spanning 32.7-11A ka are analyzed to assess the elemental contributions of organic materials and to identify elemental paleoclimatic proxies in peats. Peat ash, which is mainly composed of silicate materials, makes up 20-80% of each of the samples. The analysis shows that organic materials are a significant source of many of the elements in the ashes. Among these elements, P and V are the most typical, with their concentrations in the ashes closely correlating to the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the peats. Al, Na, Sc, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Ge, Pb, and Th are also associated with biogenic materials, particularly in the lower section (below 122 cm) of the core, where the organic material content is high. Ca, Sr, Mg, and Mn appear to have been part of carbonate deposits, such as authigenic FeCO3 and MnCO3 in the anoxic peats, whereas, K, Ti, Zn, Ga, Rb, Y. rare earth elements (REEs), Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Ba, and U are mainly associated with silicate materials. Local weathering products, rather than dust from northern China, are the main sources for the silicate materials in these peats. Some elemental ratios such as K/Rb and K2O/Na2O can reliably indicate changes in local chemical weathering intensity, and their variation patterns match the changes in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) very well. The less intensive chemical weathering indicated by lower K/Rb and K2O/Na2O ratios generally corresponds to weaker EASM strength during similar to 30 to similar to 10 ka, which is consistent with the fact that weaker summer monsoons may arouse drier climates, and do not favor intense chemical weathering. This suggests that select elemental ratios in peats/organic rich sediments may be informative proxies for monsoon climate changes. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Carbon Isotope Composition of Land Snail Shells As a Proxy for Precipitation Amount in the East Asian Monsoon Region: A Case Study from Hainan Island

Abstract:The carbon isotopic composition of land snail shells (δ13Cshell) potentially reflects changes in vegetation composition and thus precipitation. To better assess the response of δ13Cshell to East Asian monsoon (EAM) precipitation in different regions, we investigated the δ13C of modern snail shells and the corresponding surface soil and vegetation in Hainan Island, in the tropical monsoon region of China. This region spans a large mean annual rainfall gradient (1250–2300 mm), but it has a very small range of mean annual temperature (∼2 °C). We found that the most depleted δ13Cshell value (−18.5‰) reported in this study is more negative than previously reported in the literature, and that δ13Cshell in Hainan Island mainly reflects the δ13C of C3 plants, indicating the C3 dietary preference of snails. After confirming that δ13Cshell is a reliable precipitation proxy in Hainan Island, we produced a new general equation between δ13Cshell and precipitation, combining our data from Hainan Island with that from previous studies in the EAM region: δ13Cshell = −0.0025 (±0.0002) MAP – 9.0841 (±0.23) (n = 131, r = −0.73, p < 0.01). A comparison of the slope of the linear equation for Hainan Island (δ13Cshell = −0.003 (± 0.0007) MAP - 7.5619 (± 1.27), n = 18, r = −0.74, p < 0.01) with that of Bao et al. (2019), with a larger temperature range (>10 °C), enabled us to validate that temperature in the EAM region has little effect on δ13Cshell compared to precipitation. We also conducted a theoretical evaluation of the effect of temperature on δ13Cshell using a flux balance model, which confirmed that the δ13Cshell–precipitation proxy is insensitive to temperature variations, considering temperature effects on the fractionation coefficient and the δ13C of C3 plants, where C3 plants are the dominant plant type. Our results potentially enable the quantitative reconstruction of paleo-precipitation via the δ13Cshell of snail fossils in the sedimentary deposits of the EAM region.
Seasonal wet dry variability of the Asian monsoon since the middle Pleistocene

Abstract:Abstract Wet summers and dry winters are an essential feature of monsoon climates, but quantification of change in wet-dry seasonality through time is very challenging because most geological materials fail to record sub-annual environmental signals, instead integrating years, decades, or centuries. Here we quantify Asian wet-dry seasonality since the middle Pleistocene for monsoon climates using high-resolution stable oxygen isotope analysis of land snail shells from the Chinese Loess Plateau. This approach allows us to collect data on single seasons and years in geologic history. Modern shells show that: 1) the δ18Oshell values are higher in boreal winter (dry) seasons and lower in boreal summer (wet) seasons; 2) winter – summer differences in δ18Oshell (up to 19.2‰) are much larger than that expected from seasonal temperature variation; and 3) the δ18Oshell range (the difference between the most positive and the most negative values) within a shell records the degree of evaporation of snail body water in the dry season, combined with a rainfall δ18O/temperature indicator in the wet season. This range can be used as a wet-dry seasonality proxy index, although clearly more work is required to calibrate this index. δ18Oshell ranges in glacial loess strata (mean = 13.6‰) are systematically larger than those from interglacial paleosol layers (mean = 8.6‰), suggesting that a significant difference in winter aridity was present, with drier winters in glacial periods and wetter winters in interglacial periods since the middle Pleistocene. This pattern may have been modified by the intrusion of the westerlies into the region in glacial dry seasons. Summer minimum δ18Oshell values are similar throughout the record, which contrasts significantly with glacial/interglacial speleothem records, especially if these represent typical monsoon stable isotope patterns in rains. However, if some moisture from the westerlies contribute more negative δ18O values in glacial intervals, these minimum δ18O values may not contradict the patterns seen in the speleothem record. Future work should focus on the seasonal timing of the isotope cycles in land snail shells.

Abstract:Lake Sihailongwan in Jilin province, NE China, provides the first continuous and almost entirely seasonally laminated sediment record on the East Asian mainland comprising the complete Holocene, the Late-glacial period, and large parts of the Last Glacial. Sediment and palynological proxy data provide a finely resolved regional environmental history of the East Asian monsoon. A varve-based chronology (shl-vc2) has been established for the last 65,000 years and allows a detailed comparison with other long regional and global palaeoclimate records. Vegetation density of the study area depends, on the long run, on precessionally forced insolation changes, with superimposed millennial-scale variability during the Last Glacial. Periodic increase of organic carbon content and thermophilous tree species like Ulmus and Fraxinus and contemporary decrease of shrub Alnus precisely mirror millennial-scale climatic variations primarily known from Greenland ice-cores as Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles, as well as Late-glacial period climate changes. Percentages of trees & shrubs pollen and in particular lake productivity-related data reveal substantial differences between interstadial intensities, with those between 50 and 60 ka BP being more pronounced than the following ones.

Abstract:Holocene climatic and environmental changes on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) have been widely discussed based on the climatic records from sedimentary cores. However, differences in the reconstructed climatic history from various studies in this region still exist, probably due to influence of climatic proxies from multiple factors and the chronological uncertainties in lacustrine sediments. Here we present records of terrestrial plant δ13C, soil color and total organic carbon content over the past 8400years from a well-dated meadow section on the northeastern TP. The terrestrial plant δ13C value serves as a good summer precipitation/moisture indicator in the studied region. Soil color property and TOC content are also able to disentangle the moisture evolution history. All the data show much wet climates at 8400–7400calyr BP, dry climates at 7400–6000calyr BP and then wet conditions with fluctuation at 6000–3200calyr BP. Late Holocene moisture appears to be comparable with moist conditions from 6000 to 3200calyr BP. By further comparing the climatic variations in the Lake Qinghai area with records of the reconstructed summer temperature and the Asian Monsoon precipitation, we believe that the pattern of moisture/precipitation evolution in the Lake Qinghai area was not completely consistent with regions around Lake Qinghai, probably due to complicated interaction between the East Asian Summer Monsoon and the Indian Summer Monsoon.
1500-Year Sedimentary Records of the East Asian Summer Monsoon and Yellow Sea Warm Current from the Muddy Area of the North Yellow Sea, China

Abstract:Advances in reconstructing the East Asian monsoon have provided important insights into the natural climate variability in Asia during the pre-instrumental period. However, there are still unresolved paleoclimate issues that necessitate the use of geological proxy data to further our understanding of past climate changes. This study focused on core B13, located in the muddy area of the North Yellow Sea (NYS), to investigate the evolutionary history over the past 1500 years and reconstruct the records of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and Yellow Sea warm current (YSWC). The mean grain size of sediment ranged from 4.2 Φ to 5.6 Φ, with the sorting coefficient ranging from 1.9 to 2.2, indicating poor sorting. The C–M pattern showed a limited range of values, with the M values being between 33 and 83 μm and the C values being between 165 and 287 μm, suggesting uniform-suspension transport. The L* index ranged from 40.41 to 44.12, while the a* and b* indexes ranged from 0.55 to 1.78 and 2.86 to 5.94, respectively. A stable and relatively strong sedimentary environment is indicated through a comprehensive analysis of the C–M plot, triangular plot, the relationship between the mean grain size and sorting, and the changes in grain-size and color parameters. The sedimentary evolution in the muddy area of the NYS over the past 1500 years can be categorized into three distinct stages. In this study, proxies for the EASM and YSWC were extracted using the VPCA method from the sediment grain size and diffuse spectral reflectance (DSR) data, respectively. The reliability of these proxies has been confirmed through comparison with other validated proxies. The results indicated that the strength of the EASM and YSWC also exhibited three stages, corresponding to the Dark Ages Cold Period (DACP), Medieval Warm Period (MWP), and Little Ice Age (LIA), respectively. On a centennial scale, the correlation between the EASM and YSWC was predominantly negative. This research validates the reliability of the VPCA method for paleoclimate reconstruction, contributes important climate records in a special muddy area, and provides a new perspective on how to eliminate temporal errors in verifying the correlation between the two climate systems.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn the East Asian monsoon region, Chinese speleothem δ18O records exhibit a maximum monsoon strength during the early Holocene. However, other proxy data from lakes or loess, interpreted as monsoon rainfall, show a mid‐Holocene monsoon optimum. This discrepancy may come from specific climate interpretation of different proxies. Here we report multiproxy records from a single loess–palaeosol sequence at Yulin in the monsoon marginal northern China, based on an independent and high‐precision chronology. Our long‐chain n‐alkane δD values, together with related biomarker proxies including the average chain length and concentration of long‐chain n‐alkanes, reveal a weakening trend in monsoon strength and less woody vegetation since ~6 ka. However, other soil formation‐related proxies, such as magnetic susceptibility, grain‐size distribution and total organic carbon, show a decreasing trend since 4–3 ka. We find that monsoon and vegetation are controlled by insolation variation, while soil formation is more related to temperature and humidity changes. Our multiple proxy comparison reveals different controlling mechanisms leading to different interpretations in monsoon, vegetation and soil formation reconstructions. This finding suggests that previous debates on Holocene monsoon changes in East Asia probably stem from the specific proxy interpretation.
Effect of Altitude on the Stable Carbon and Oxygen Isotopic Compositions of Land Snails at the Margin of the East Asian Monsoon

Abstract:The carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of land snail shells (delta C-13(shell) and delta O-18(shell)) has been used to reconstruct paleoenvironmental changes worldwide. Adding to the limited calibration information available for the monsoon marginal regions, we present delta C-13 and delta O-18 results for modern snails, plants and soils, collected from the Helan Mountains, in North China, spanning an altitudinal gradient of 1733-2851 m a.s.l. Linear regression analysis show that delta C-13(shell) is positively correlated with altitude on both slopes, with similar rates of altitudinal variation; in contrast, delta O-18(shell) is negatively correlated with altitude on the western slopes, but this effect is absent on the eastern slopes. The variations in the integrated delta C-13 signals of living vegetation and the flux of absorbed atmospheric CO2 attributed to changes in metabolic rates are likely responsible for the altitudinal effect on delta C-13(shell) above 2000 m a.s.l., while changes in vegetation type and/or carbonate ingestion by snails may be important in inducing the positive shift in delta C-13(shell) below 2000 m a.s.l. delta O-18(shell) is determined by the rainwater delta O-18 and by the fractionation processes between shell carbonate and snail body water, and both are controlled by the temperature of the alpine environment. In addition, evaporative enrichment of the body fluid or of the environmental water prior to ingestion by snails exerts an important influence on delta O-18(shell). Notably, both delta C-13(shell) and delta O-18(shell) in the study region respond more sensitively to climate than in the monsoon core area. The rate of change of delta C-13(shell) in response to temperature and precipitation above the altitude of 2000 m a.s.l. are -0.87 parts per thousand/degrees C and +2.76 parts per thousand/100 mm, while the corresponding rates for delta O-18(shell) on the western slopes are +0.41 parts per thousand/degrees C and -1.29 parts per thousand/100 mm. Our results expand the range of application of delta C-13(shell) and delta O-18(shell) as climatic indicators, and emphasize the differences in the climatic sensitivity of these proxies between the monsoon margin and core areas. In addition, the differences in shell isotope composition in response to environment changes between adjacent locations (i.e. on different slopes) in mountainous terrain need to be considered in future studies. Abstract:Marine sediments in coastal zones serve as valuable archives for understanding the history of silicate chemical weathering and summer monsoon rainfall in source areas, providing insights into terrigenous climate and environmental evolution. In this study, we investigated the grain size, clay minerals, and geochemistry of sediments retrieved from core KZK01 in the coastal zone of the northwest South China Sea during the past 13 thousand years before present (kyr BP). Our findings demonstrated that the illite crystallinity index served as a reliable proxy for assessing the intensity of chemical weathering in the source area. Moreover, it distinctly recorded significant climatic events such as the Younger Dryas and Bond events during the Holocene. The dominant driver of the regional East Asian summer monsoon was identified as summer solar radiation in the Northern Hemisphere at low latitudes. Cold climate events exhibited global consistency, potentially influenced by the presence of ice sheets at high latitudes. Lastly, our records revealed a distinct transition at 9.0 kyr, highlighting significant impacts of the Qiongzhou Strait and sea level rise on regional climate dynamics.

Abstract:A 336-cm-long sediment core spanning the last 130 ka was recovered from Lake Xingkai on the northeastern margin of the East Asian summer monsoon domain to reveal the linkage between lacustrine depositional processes and environmental changes. Bayesian end member modeling analysis was conducted to partition and interpret the grain-size distributions of Lake Xingkai sediments. Our results suggest that the sedimentary system is characterized by three end members (EMs). EM1 and EM2, with a modal value of 13 and 10 m, respectively, indicate the variation of local hydraulic conditions. EM3, with a modal value of 5 m, reflects the background atmospheric dust loading. High atmospheric dust concentration generally occurred during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5d, MIS 4, and early MIS 3, when the climate in the Asian dust source region was cold and dry. In contrast, low dust concentration prevailed during MIS 2, likely due to the southward shift of the westerlies driven by maximum ice volume in the high latitudes.

Abstract:The East Asian monsoons have fluctuated in concert with high-latitude warmth during the past several hundred thousand years, with humid summer monsoon-dominant climates characterizing warm intervals, including interglacials and interstadials, and and winter monsoon-dominant climates characterizing cool intervals, including glacials and stadials. Of the states comprising the mid-Pleistocene to recent climatic regime, interglacials are most similar in terms of high latitude ice volumes and temperatures to those extant during the late Miocene and early Pliocene. Thus, an important question is whether Mio-Pliocene climates in northern China were analogous to a hypothetical 'prolonged interglacial state,' with increased summer monsoon precipitation and expansion of forest and steppe environments at the expense of desert environments.We utilize new and previously published carbon isotopic data from fossil teeth and soil carbonates to place constraints on paleovegetation distributions and to help infer the behavior of the monsoon system between similar to 7 and 4 Ma. We find that plants using the C-4 photosynthetic pathway-which today are largely grasses found in regions with warm season precipitation-were present in northern China by late Miocene time, demonstrating that the C-4 expansion in China was not significantly delayed compared to the global C-4 event. During the late Miocene-early Pliocene interval, soil carbonate and tooth enamel delta C-13 data indicate: 1) that nearly pure C-3-plant ecosystems existed in the southern Chinese Loess Plateau (CILP), and therefore ecosystems there were dominated by woody dicot, herbaceous dicot, or cool-season grass vegetation (or a combination of these), and 2) that the CLP was characterized by a pattern of northward-increasing C-4 vegetation and aridity. Utilizing a broadened conceptual model for interpreting delta C-13 data, and citing independent faunal, floral, and lithostratgraphic data, we suggest that these patterns reflect northward expansion of forest and steppe ecosystems and relatively humid monsoon climates during the late Miocene and early Pliocene. An important implication of this interpretation is that the forcing mechanism illuminated by the temporal correlation during the Pleistocene between warm high latitudes and strong East Asian summer monsoons is a robust feature of the Eurasian tectonic-climatic system that predates the Plio-Pleistocene climatic reorganization.
