Abstract:A type of compact temperature sensor based on microfiber knot resonator is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The microfiber knot, which is assembled by two fiber probes, is placed on a plate glass substrate and coated with low-index polymer to keep the system robust. Sensitivities of this kind of temperature sensor as 0.27nm/°C in heating process (when temperature ranges from 28 to 140°C) and −0.28nm/°C in cooling process (when temperature ranges from 135 to 25°C) are obtained. Temperature resolution of 0.5°C is demonstrated and higher resolution is predicted with a high-resolution spectrometer.

Abstract:We report a high-resolution and wide-range thermometer using a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FP) combined with beat frequency interrogation. Two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are locked to the FBG-FP sensing head and a hydrogen cyanide H13C14N (HCN) gas cell, respectively, both using the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique. The light beams from two lasers are brought together to interfere on a photodetector producing a beat frequency signal which provides a measure of the temperature change. Our sensor exhibits a dynamic range of ∼109 °C, a high resolution of 2×10-4 °C with an averaging time of 1 s. By introducing the reference frequency, the sensor has demonstrated good long-term stability. This sensor provides a useful tool for those fields where resolving slight temperature changes is crucial, such as deep ocean temperature measurement.

Abstract:A simply fabricated, highly sensitive, and inexpensive optical fiber temperature sensor is reported with a Fabry–Perot (FP) microcavity of controlled length. The microcavity with controllable length is fabricated by single-mode fiber (SMF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing. After the PDMS is cured, the SMF is connected to the supercontinuum light source (SCLS) and the optical spectrometer analyzer (OSA) for online observation of the reflection spectrum. The micro-displacement platform is used to pull the SMF to form an air cavity. After the air cavity is stabilized, ultraviolet (UV) activated glue is used for packaging outside the PDMS. The FP microcavity is formed by the end face of the SMF and the face of PDMS. The length of the FP microcavity can be controlled online by the micro-displacement platform to a minimum of 15 µm. The free spectral range (FSR) may reach 74.8 nm and the interference fringe contrast (IFC) is up to 19.8 dB to allow sensitive measurements across a wide temperature range. The experiments demonstrate a high temperature sensitivity of 5.388 nm/°C from 33 to 93 °C with high repeatability and linearity (R2=0.9937). Stability experiments showed that the maximum changes in wavelength and intensity are only 45 pm and 0.035 dB, respectively. It is anticipated that the easily constructed, compact, and inexpensive fiber-optic temperature sensor will be employed in practical applications.

Abstract:In the area of fiber-optic sensors (FOSs), the past decade witnessed great efforts to challenge the thermal-noise-level sensing resolution for passive FOS. Several attempts were reported claiming the arrival of thermal-noise-level resolution, while the realization of thermal-noise-level resolution for passive FOSs is still controversial and challenging. In this paper, an ultrahigh-resolution FOS system is presented with a sensing resolution better than existing high-resolution passive FOSs. A fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as the sensing element is interrogated with an ultra-stable probe laser by using the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. Both strain and temperature measurements are carried out to validate the performance of the sensor. The measured noise floor agrees with the theoretical thermal noise level very well.

Abstract:The sapphire fibre thermometer probe with doped Cr3+ ion tip end was produced by laser heated pedestal method, and a thermometer system based on its fluorescent decay was presented. A phase-locked detection method was used to check the fluorescence lifetime. Among the detection ranging from the room temperature to 450 ℃, the thermometer has an average temperature resolution of 1 ℃. The system had the advantages of high accuracy, very high temperature resolution, good dynamic response and immunity to the electro-magnetic interference. So it may be used in microwave treatment and thermal monitoring of medium voltage substations.

Abstract:We reported an optical fiber based temperature sensor with mK-order resolution, wide temperature range and excellent long term stability. The sensor composes of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as the sensing element, an HCN gas cell for absolute frequency reference. A distributed feedback diode laser with current modulation is used as the light source. To overcome the frequency-sweep nonlinearity of the laser, an auxiliary Fabry-Perot interferometer with free spectrum range of 10 MHz is employed. A cross-correlation algorithm is employed to calculate the center frequency difference between the FBG and the gas cell. With the proposed configuration, a temperature resolution of 0.41 mK was demonstrated in experiment. To the best knowledge, this is the first time that an mK order temperature resolution has been achieved by optical fiber sensor.

Abstract:A novel, to our knowledge, sapphire-fiber thermometer ranging from 20 degrees to 1800 degrees C is presented that combines the radiance detection and the fluorescent lifetime detection schemes into one system. The thermal probe is a sapphire fiber grown from the laser-heated pedestal growth method. Its end part is doped with Cr3+ ion and coated with some radiance material to constitute a minifiber cavity. The sapphire fiber is coupled with a Y-shaped silica fiber bundle for signal transmission. Radiance and fluorescence signal processing schemes are also set up within one thermometer system. ii sandwich two-band p-i-n detector is used that may respond to both the radiation and the fluorescence. Preliminary experimental results show that the thermometer is suitable for practical application with potential long-term stability and a high-temperature resolution. Abstract:We demonstrate a high-resolution temperature sensor based on optical heterodyne spectroscopy technology by virtue of the narrow linewidth characteristic of a single-frequency fiber laser. When the single-frequency ring fiber laser has a Lorentzian-linewidth <1 kHz and the temperature sensor operates in the range of 3−85 °C, an average sensitivity of 14.74 pm/°C is obtained by an optical spectrum analyzer. Furthermore, a resolution as high as ~5 × 10−3 °C is demonstrated through optical heterodyne spectroscopy technology by an electrical spectrum analyzer in the range of 18.26–18.71 °C with the figure of merit up to 3.1 × 105 in the experiment.

Abstract:Sapphire optical fiber thermal probe with end Cr3+ ions doped is grown by laser heated pedestal growth method.This fluorescence thermal probe offers advantages of one body compact constructs.The fluorescence temperature dependence of the probe is investigated.Experimental results indicate that the fluorescence lifetime of Cr3+∶Al2O3 single crystal optical fiber decreases smoothly and monotonically from 4.0 ms at 0 ℃ to 0.2 ms at 450 ℃.With the fluorescence thermal probe,a fiber thermometer range from 0～450 ℃ is constructed.The thermometer applies 405 nm UV LED as excited light source and phase-locked detector for fluorescence lifetime online measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, high spatial-resolution distributed temperature sensing has been realized based on a femtosecond laser written ultra-weak Fabry-Perot Array (FPA). 50 identical Fabry-Perot cavities are fabricated in a 10 mm long optical fiber by femtosecond laser point-by-point written technology, and the corresponding spatial resolution is as high as 200 µm. Besides, by employing the total phase demodulation method, the optical path lengths (OPLs) in the ultra-weak FPA are successively demodulated based on the Rayleigh backscattering signal recorded by an optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), and therefore the absolute temperature values instead of the relative ones can be obtained. When compared with the conventional single mode fiber-based OFDR, the proposed ultra-weak FPA presents both higher spatial resolution and lower temperature sensing uncertainty (0.25 °C) benefiting from the periodically enhanced Rayleigh backscattering. Furthermore, the experiments also confirm that the ultra-weak FPA can be applied for absolute temperature field profile sensing with large temperature gradient, which is particularly suitable for high-resolution temperature measurement of miniature devices.
Novel Sapphire Fiber Thermometer Using Fluorescent Decay

Abstract:A novel sapphire fiber thermometer using fluorescent decay is presented. The thermal probe is simply a sapphire fiber grown from the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method, with its end doped with Cr3+ ion. The sapphire fiber is coupled with a normal Y-shape silica fiber bundle for signal transmission. Signal processing system for the fluorescent lifetime detection is set up. Relationship of the fluorescent lifetime and intensity with the temperature for the doped sapphire fiber is carefully measured and presented. The thermometer has good thermal response characteristics due to its specific thermal probe structure. The coupling efficiency between the fiber probe and the guiding fiber bundle is also high and stable. Experimental result shows that the thermometer has an average temperature resolution of 1°C between 20 and 450°C.

Abstract:The YAG(Y3Al5O12) fiber-optic thermometer probe with Cr3+ ion doped tip end was grown from the laser heated pedestal growth method,and a thermometer system based on its fluorescent decay was presented.A phase-locked detection method was used to check the fluorescence lifetime.In the range from 0 ℃ to 180 ℃,the measurement resolution achievable due to signal processing scheme is 0.4 ℃.Compared with other phase-sensitive detection techniques,phase-locked detection results in a significant improvement in the measurement accuracy,a high noise-suppression ability.Because of its good dynamic response and immunity to electro-magnetic interference,it may be used in microwave treatment and thermal monitoring of medium voltage substations.

Abstract:High‐resolution temperature measurement is nerve‐wracking obstruction for precise characterization of many physical, chemical, and biological processes. To solve this problem, a novel microcavity–optomechanical–oscillation‐based thermometer is proposed. The microcavity serving as a link parametrically couples the mechanical resonator and optical resonator in the same structure and provides a natural and highly sensitive temperature transduction mechanism and ultrahigh‐resolution optical demodulation. The mathematical model of geometrical parameters, mechanics, and material properties for temperature response mechanism is established and verified experimentally. The proposed thermometer has a thermal sensitivity of 11 300 Hz °C−1 and an ultrahigh‐temperature resolution of 1 × 10−4 °C, to the best of one's knowledge, which is the highest temperature resolution with a silica cavity.
High Resolution Polymer/air Double-Cavity Fabry–Perot Fiber Temperature Sensor Based on Exposed Core Microstructured Fiber

Abstract:This study proposes a high-resolution optical fiber Fabry-Perot (FP) temperature sensor and it is based on an exposed-core microstructured optical fiber (ECF) coated by a ultraviolet curing polymer adhesive. Then, a small piece of multimode fiber (MMF) with large core diameter is spliced in front of ECF to expand the input light beam, and the parallel polymer/air double-cavity FP in such single-mode fiber (SMF)-MMF-ECF-SMF structure is constructed. Additionally, by employing a mobilized demodulation module, the interference signal is analyzed by phase demodulation method. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of the sensor is 30.8 celcius(-1) and the resolution is up to 1.6 x 10(-4) celcius in a range of 20 celcius-50 celcius, which can achieve high resolution temperature measurement. Furthermore, to alleviate the wavelength uncertainty of the demodulation device, a double-cavity self-reference differential phase modulation method is explored in the proposed parallel double-cavity FP. It shows that the stability could be improved to five times when system temperature is unstable, which offers an alternative method to further improve the temperature sensing resolution.

Abstract:A high-resolution strain/temperature sensing system based on a fiber Bragg grating-Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FPC) and a wavelength-swept single-longitudinal-mode laser diode (modulated by a sawtooth signal) is proposed. The high-finesse (~627) FBG-FPC formed by two uniform FBGs of high reflectivity (~99.5%) is used both as a strain/temperature sensor and a FPC with ultranarrow (~0.12 pm) transmission bands. Using a photodetector to detect the transmissive light of the laser diode through the FBG-FPC, wavelength demodulation is achieved by mapping wavelength measurement to time measurement. Both strain sensing and temperature sensing with a resolution of 0.11 muepsiv and 0.014degC, respectively, have been demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrated a linear-cavity fiber laser using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fabricated by femtosecond laser and a Sagnac loop as cavity mirrors. The temperature sensing response of the fiber laser was characterized by placing the FBG in a high-temperature environment. The stability of the fiber laser at high temperature was improved after the FBG was annealed at 1100 °C. The fiber laser can work stably as a temperature sensor at 1000 °C and its temperature sensing sensitivity is approximately 15.9 pm/°C from 300 °C to 1000 °C.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a high-temperature sensing device based on multiple reflection mirrors inscribed in optical fiber by femtosecond laser. The output spectrum of the device has a number of dominant wavelength peaks with controllable spacing and bandwidth formed by adjusting the reflection mirror separation. The device has excellent high-temperature sustainability up to 1100C, good temperature sensitivity of 10.15pmC and 16.92pmC, within the temperature region between 100 and 400C, and between 400 and 1100C, respectively. The fiber device is simple in configuration, robust in structure, easy in fabrication and convenient in operation, and has high potential in sensing applications especially for high-temperature monitoring in harsh environment.

Abstract:In this study, an optical fiber probe with an extremely short integrated temperature sensor for high-power laser ablation was proposed and successfully fabricated. Both optical mode and wavelength multiplication were performed simultaneously using a double-clad fiber with a wavelength-division multiplication technique. The wavelength shift with temperature showed a linear relationship with a sensitivity of 10 pm/°C. High-power laser irradiation of 1000 mW or more using multimode transmission and fine temperature monitoring using single-mode transmission were performed simultaneously with a system response time of a few seconds. The laser wavelength selection and power variation can increase the variability of the heating region required for medical applications.

Abstract:We present a fiber laser temperature sensor based on temperature dependence whisper gallery mode-based microcavity. Three different thermo-optic coefficient liquids are injected into a thin-wall thickness microtubule for the different temperature sensitivity of whisper gallery mode shift. The sensor temperature sensitivity increases with the absolute value of the liquid core thermo-optic coefficient. The theoretical model of whisper gallery mode temperature response is analyzed. A liquid core microtubule is inserted into the erbium-doped fiber ring laser (FRL) cavity as the optical filter and sensing unit simultaneously, so the lasing wavelength can be used to detect the temperature change of the medium. Due to the narrow spectral width of the sensing laser, a high sensing resolution system is experimentally confirmed. With the combination of the liquid core to increase the sensitivity and FRL cavity to increase sensing resolution, the high sensitivity of 112.8 pm/°C of the sensing system is demonstrated and the thermal resolution is $8.16\times 10^{-{3}}\,\,^{\circ }\text{C}$ .
