Abstract:In this work, the electrocrystallization of uranium on a tungsten cathode in LiCl-KCl eutectic are comprehensively investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) techniques coupled with scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis and mathematical models (S-H and H-T) of nucleation. The morphologies of uranium nuclei evolution at different cut-off potential stages were visualized during the redox potential range of U3+/U in CV curves. A uranium film composed of nano-nuclei initially can always be observed regardless of the UCl3 concentration. A coalescence phenomenon of the formed nano-nuclei to give a size burst is confirmed at the reductive peak for the higher concentration of UCl3. The uranium nucleation mechanisms were examined by CA-SEM-mathematical model techniques. Although the S-H model suggests an instantaneous mechanism for lower UCl3 concentrations, neither the S-H nor the H-T model derived based on the simplified projection assumption from three-dimensional to two-dimensional planar (3D-2D) diffusion, gives a reliable criterion especially at higher UCl3 concentrations and overpotentials. Because the morphology evolutions of nuclei clearly confirm the coalescence or aggregation of smaller nuclei to large ones, which is not in accordance with the assumptions of the geometric model of 3D-2D diffusion during the independent growth of the nuclei. Finally, the uranium nuclei size distribution and kinetic properties are also discussed.
