Abstract:Distributed long-range Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is an extremely time-consuming sensing scheme, which requires frequency mapping of the Brillouin spectrum and a large number of average times. Here, we propose a fast long-range BOTDA based on the optical chirp chain (OCC) probe wave and Brillouin loss scheme. The OCC-modulated probe wave is enabled by cascading fast-frequency-changing microwave chirp segments head-to-tail, which covers a large frequency range around the anti-Stokes frequency relative to the pump wave. The combination of the OCC technique and Brillouin loss scheme provides several advantages, i.e., fast measurement, a high Brillouin threshold, no additional amplification scheme, and freedom from the nonlocal effect. In the experiment, 6 m spatial resolution, 3.2 s measurement time, and 3 MHz measurement precision were achieved over a 150 km single- mode fiber. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) requires frequency mapping of the Brillouin spectrum to obtain environmental information (e.g., temperature or strain) over the length of the sensing fiber, with the finite frequency-sweeping time-limiting applications to only static or slowly varying strain or temperature environments. To solve this problem, we propose the use of an optical chirp chain probe wave to remove the requirement of frequency sweeping for the Brillouin spectrum, which enables distributed ultrafast strain measurement with a single pump pulse. The optical chirp chain is generated using a frequency-agile technique via a fast-frequency-changing microwave, which covers a larger frequency range around the Stokes frequency relative to the pump wave, so that a distributed Brillouin gain spectrum along the fiber is realized. Dynamic strain measurements for periodic mechanical vibration, mechanical shock, and a switch event are demonstrated at sampling rates of 25 kHz, 2.5 MHz and 6.25 MHz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of distributed Brillouin strain sensing with a wide-dynamic range at a sampling rate of up to the MHz level.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) using distributed Brillouin amplification (DBA) only requires a milliwatt-level pump to achieve a sensing range beyond 100 km, which provides a powerful tool for temperature/strain sensing. However, similar to the majority of other long-range BOTDAs, the state-of-the-art reports require > 1000 times average, severely restricting the sensing speed. The blind area over tens of kilometers caused by the nonuniform Brillouin response and parasitic amplitude modulation (AM) are crucial factors affecting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, a comprehensive performance optimization and substantial enhancement for BOTDA sensors was presented by the direct demodulation of an injection-locked dual-bandwidth probe wave. Injection locking (IL) can completely eliminate the impact of AM noise; dual-bandwidth probe enables self-adaptive pulse loss compensation, thereby intensifying the SNR flatness along the ultralong fiber, and direct probe demodulation can overcome nonlocal effects and allows ∼19.7 dB enhancement of probe input power. Therefore, using only 100 times average, ∼148.3 km sensing, and ∼5 m spatial resolution were achieved with < ∼0.8 MHz standard deviation of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) over a broad range (∼131.7 km). The reduction in averages was more than 10 times that of the reported majority of long-range BOTDAs. Such performances were achieved without using time-consuming or post-processing techniques, such as optical pulse coding and image denoising. Because this approach is compatible with optical chirp chain technique without frequency sweeping, fast acquisition (0.3 s) was also realized, which has the potential for fast sensing at 3.3 Hz along a ∼150 km fiber.

Abstract:Optical chirp chain Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (OCC-BOTDA) has the capabilities of fast measurement, high Brillouin threshold, and freedom from the nonlocal effect; at the same time, however, it also has problems introduced by transient stimulated Brillouin scattering. The influence of the transient interaction is reflected as the broadened asymmetric Brillouin spectrum, the ghost peak, and the frequency shift of the main peak. This introduces difficulty in computing the fiber Brillouin frequency shift with good measurement accuracy. Besides, the OCC modulation causes additional noise due to the uneven amplitude response for different frequency components. In this work, we propose a high-performance OCC-BOTDA using the principal component analysis (PCA) based pattern recognition algorithm and differential pulse-width pair (DPP) technique. After building the Brillouin spectrum database (i.e., all patterns), the fiber intrinsic Brillouin frequency shift can be recognized by the PCA algorithm from a nonstandard Brillouin spectrum profile, resulting in good measurement accuracy. Meanwhile, the DPP technique, subtracting between two Brillouin signals generated by two wide-width pump pulses, is utilized to reduce the OCC modulation noise and avoid the pulse self-phase modulation effect in long-range BOTDA sensing. In the experiment, a temperature measurement with 1.3 MHz measurement precision, 4 m spatial resolution, and 5 s measurement time is achieved over a 100 km single-mode fiber. Abstract:An ultra-fast sweep-free distributed BOTDA sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated employing coherent de-modulation of digital optical frequency comb (DOFC) probe signal. The phase shift of each frequency tone induced during the Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS), corresponding to the Brillouin Phase Spectrum (BPS), is simultaneously measured in a single shot without frequency sweeping and averaging. We demonstrate an ultra-fast BOTDA sensor in 10km long fiber with the measurement time of 10 ps, which is depending on the time-of-flight of the fiber. The minimum detectable fiber length is 51.2m with a 1.95 MHz frequency resolution among 1 GHz sensing coverage. The BFS uncertainty of our ultra-fast BOTDA using BPS is calculated to be~1.5 MHz near the end of fiber under test (FUT), which is significantly improved by ~50% compared with that using BGS.

Abstract:A single-measurement sweep-free distributed Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) sensor based on phase detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated employing digital optical frequency comb (DOFC) probe signal. Brillouin Phase Spectrum (BPS) of DOFC probe induced by Brillouin interaction is measured using coherent detection in a single acquisition, without any frequency scanning and data averaging. Single-measurement BOTDA sensor based on BPS in 10km long fiber is demonstrated with a response time of 100 μs, which is limited only by the fiber length. The spatial resolution is 51.2m, determined by the duration of DOFC. And the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) uncertainty is estimated to be~1.5 MHz at the end of fiber under test (FUT). Benefiting from the fast response time, dynamic measurement up to 1 kHz vibration frequency has been demonstrated.

Abstract:A vector optical-chirp-chain (OCC) Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) based on complex principal component analysis (CPCA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by employing a four-tone OCC probe with two orthogonal polarization states. The polarization-fading-free complex Brillouin spectrum (CBS) of the vector OCC-BOTDA is obtained by combining the amplitude and phase response spectra of the probe wave at both Brillouin gain and loss region. We utilize the CPCA method to determine the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) directly using the measured CBS, and the sensing accuracy is improved by a factor of up to 1.4. The distributed temperature sensing is demonstrated over a 20 km standard single-mode fiber with a 6 m spatial resolution and less than 1 MHz frequency uncertainty under 10 times of trace averaging.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel dynamic Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) by utilizing frequency-agility double-sideband digital optical frequency comb (DOFC) probes. For the first time, simultaneous interrogation of the complex Brillouin gain, loss and corresponding phase spectra is realized without frequency sweeping process. An acoustic-optical modulator is employed to aid in the simultaneous acquisition of full-field Brillouin spectra without sideband selective optical filters, yielding a fixed frequency offset over the spectral range via direct detection. Through the joint analysis of additional spectra, the measurement accuracy can be significantly improved compared to the traditional single-sideband-based schemes. In addition, frequency-agility DOFC probes are used to improve the spatial resolution while maintaining an acceptable frequency resolution. Eventually, the proposed BOTDA achieves a 4-m spatial resolution and less than 1.53-MHz frequency uncertainty over 10-km fiber with 400-MHz dynamic measurement range for the full-field Brillouin spectra. For proof of concept, dynamic vibration measurement is demonstrated with 40 Hz sampling rate. The proposed scheme with full-field Brillouin spectra measurement provides high accuracy enhancement, showcasing a promising application for distributed dynamic sensing.

Abstract:In this letter, a resolution enhancement and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement scheme for digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) ultrafast distributed sensing employing a pump pulse array is proposed. Based on the properties of the time-invariant linear system and the cyclic revolution theorem, experimental results indicate that its spatial resolution reaches 10.24 m while the frequency uncertainty is below 2 MHz over a 9.5 km fiber. Moreover, the response time is only 209.6 μs and the temperature measurement error is less than 0.52 °C.

Abstract:A significant spatial resolution enhancement scheme for digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based fast Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using frequency-agility probes, without sacrificing the frequency resolution. The proposed system ensures high spatial resolution by using short frame duration, meanwhile enabling high frequency resolution retrieval of the Brillouin gain spectrum using frequency interleaving of multiple frequency-agility DOFC probes. Additionally, quadratic phase coding is introduced to release the influence of the high peak to average power ratio of the probes. Eventually, the proposed BOTDA sensor achieves a record 5-m spatial resolution over 10-km fiber with less than 2-MHz frequency uncertainty, and a 1-GHz dynamic measurement range. For proof of concept, 10-Hz vibration sensing is also successfully demonstrated at a 40-Hz sampling rate, showing great potential for fast measurement. It is worth mentioning that a higher spatial resolution can be achieved by using more frequency-agility DOFC probes, albeit at the expense of increasing the measurement time.

Abstract:The dynamic sampling rate of Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is limited by fiber length. For breaking through this limit, a Brillouin optical time domain collider (BOTDC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this BOTDC, by employing frequency-hopping pump and probe waves, sensing information-crosstalk between adjacent pump pulses is avoided even though the pump pulse interval is shorter than the round-trip time of flight in the fiber. In the experiment, periodic mechanical vibrations with a 19.75 Hz fundamental frequency and a 39.49 Hz harmonic frequency are measured by a 10-frequency BOTDC with a sampling rate of 49 kHz which is 10 times higher than that in the BOTDA.

Abstract:The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique is a powerful method for laser frequency stabilization, and a PDH loop can also act as a single-channel sensor with high resolution and fast response speed. In this work, we expand the PDH technique into a time-domain distributed form, accomplishing a fast Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) scheme which measures the distribution of Brillouin frequency shifts along optical fiber without frequency scanning. Approaches of phase modulated probe light, synchronous demodulation for PDH error, arbitrarily accessing in single interrogation, and distributed form feedback control are employed in the system. The scheme achieves fast measurement speed and large dynamic range at the same time, as well as good response linearity and high tolerance to optical power fluctuation. In the demonstration experiment, sensing resolution of 0.4 MHz and measurement range of 300 MHz are realized, under the condition of 25 km single mode communication fiber, 5 m spatial resolution and 0.24 s measurement time (400 times of averaging).

Abstract:In this article, fast measurement of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) based on a linearly frequency modulated (LFM) pulse and a digital matched filter is studied theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) change is detected by measuring the time shift of the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) along the time axis instead of the frequency shift, as in traditional BOTDR. In the experiment, we propose to use a positive- and negative-swept pulse, named bipolarchirped pulse pair (BPP), to determine the BFS change with high accuracy. A BGS acquisition of up to 320 Hz is obtained for a fiber length of 2 km with a strain measurement accuracy of +/- 8 mu epsilon. Strain measurements in a range of up to 10000 mu epsilon are conducted, and the resulting strain coefficient is equal to 0.048 MHz/MHz/mu epsilon, which matches that of standard single-mode fibers. The BPP-BOTDR technique is an intrinsic one-end-injection truly distributed system that exhibits high measurement speed and high accuracy, which may pave the way for various BOTDR applications.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated an enhanced Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing system with fast measurement speed based on the Brillouin phase recovery using Kramers-Kronig (KK) relation. The non-Lorentz Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and Brillouin phase spectrum (BPS) measured by BOTDA are theoretically validated to satisfy KK relation and hence the BPS is digitally recovered by performing Hilbert Transform (HT) to the measured BGS. The recovery of the whole BPS along the 45km fiber only consumes 0.3s. Both simulation and experiment have been carried out to analyze the quality of the recovered BPS under various conditions. By making use of the excellent linearity of the recovered BPS, we accelerate the data processing speed by three times through Linear Fitting (LF) of BPS, without compromise of the sensing accuracy. With implementation of simple HT and LF, this scheme does not need modification of the BOTDA setup and complicated data processing algorithm, which would be a practical way for applications where fast measurement speed is needed, especially in long-distance and high-spatial resolution sensing.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is an attractive solution to temperature and strain measurement for structural health monitoring. Here, we report a slope-assisted vector BOTDA system without optical filters based on simultaneous double-sideband modulations: the pump wave is intensity-modulated into a double-sideband frequency-agile optical pulse train while the probe wave is phase-modulated into an optical carrier and double-sidebands. The double sidebands of the phase-modulated probe wave will experience the Brillouin gain and loss from that of the pump wave through the vector SBS effect. With the phase cancellation broken in the phase-modulated probe wave, the resulting RF signal of the Brillouin-induced beat signal theoretically doubles the signal-to-noise ratio relative to conventional schemes. The phase-shift spectrum of the RF signal is immune to optical power fluctuation and has a monotonous vector slope of 108-MHz. Therefore, a single-slope-assisted vector BOTDA is implemented with a sampling rate of 500 Hz to measure a mechanical vibration containing a 74.36 Hz component and a dynamic range of 1500μϵ. Then, the dynamic range is expanded to 3000μϵ using a multi-slope-assisted scheme. We believe the proposed scheme is a competitive solution to rapid, wide-dynamic range distributed temperature and strain sensing.

Abstract:Long-range Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) requires a frequency scanning process and averaging to obtain Brillouin temporal traces to map the distributed Brillouin gain spectrum, which is highly time-consuming. Furthermore, the two-end accessibility of the BOTDA leads to a roundtrip wiring layout, which shortens the sensing distance to half of the fiber length. To overcome these issues, in this study, we proposed a single-end random-access BOTDA. Two pulses, namely, pump and probe pulses, were sequentially generated, one with constant frequency and the other with chirped modulation, between which a stimulated Brillouin scattering interaction occurred with a high signal-to-noise ratio; therefore, a frequency scanning process and averaging were not needed. The pump and probe pulses were sent into the sensing fiber at the near end, and only the probe was reflected by a narrow bandwidth filter placed at the far end. The proposed single-end BOTDA can randomly sense the interested position by adjusting the time delay between the pump and probe pulses. As a result, real-time dynamic acquisition up to 1 kHz can be achieved on any position along the 50-km-long fiber, and distributed measurements can be performed on the second level. In addition, the proposed sensor is immune to the nonlocal effect, demonstrating a higher sensing accuracy at the far end compared with that of a traditional BOTDA.
