Abstract:Poly-aspartic acid (PASP), as a biodegradable chelating agent, has been used to separate and remove the Cu from the sewage sludge based on chemical extraction technology. Under various conditions, a series of experiments have been carried out for the extraction of heavy metals from the sewage sludge of Shanghai Taopu Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant. Different extraction conditions such as the chelating agent concentration, the influence of pH and the shaking time have been investigated. The extraction efficiency of three chelating agents, i.e. PASP, ethylenediaminetetraacetic, acid (EDTA) and citric acid, has been compared for the extraction of Cu from this sewage sludge. The results showed that chelating agents concentration and pH had a significant effect on the extraction efficiency of Cu. The extraction efficiency of Cu increased gradually with chelating agents concentration increasing, and the maximum extraction efficiency of Cu was 55.2% by PASP, 41.7% by citric acid and 62.8% by EDTA without pH adjusting. Under the condition of pH 8.5-9.0 and ratio 8:1 for chelating agent:heavy metals, the extraction efficiency for Cu were 66.2%-69.8% with EDTA, 38.3%-41.1% with citric acid and 50.5%-52.3% with PASP respectively. From the analysis of species distribution of Cu in sewage sludge before and after the extraction, it was found that extracted Cu mainly come from the following four states, exchangeable, carbonates, Fe and Mn oxides and organic matter fraction. Under the all experimental conditions, PASP showed higher extraction efficiency for Cu than the citric acid. Since PASP is a biodegradable chelating agent compared with EDTA, its good extraction ability for Cu from the sewage sludge shows a potential application possibility for the decontamination of heavy metals from sewage sludge or soils.
