Abstract:Land utilization for the disposal of sewage sludge (SS) is an effective strategy, yet the existence of heavy metals (HMs) in the SS represents critical constraints to its implementation on a larger scale. By the principles of simple synthesis steps and low synthesis cost, a low-cost double cationic protic ionic liquid was produced in this study for HMs removal from SS. The influence of reaction time, protic ionic liquid to SS mass ratio, and reaction temperature on HM removal were thoroughly investigated. This result indicated that the integration of protic ionic liquid and heat treatment was efficacious in the efficient elimination of HMs. Under 60°C, 15 min, and protic ionic liquid: SS of 0.5, the removal efficiency of Zn, Fe, Ni, and Cd exceeded 80%, and Cr achieved a removal efficiency of up to 93%. The BCR sequential extraction procedure and calculation of the potential ecological risk index revealed a significant reduction in the ecological risk associated with the treated SS, transitioning from a high to a low-risk level. The alterations in elemental and chemical bonding within the solid phase of SS and changes in polysaccharide and fluorescence properties within the liquid phase of SS were investigated using redundancy analysis, two-dimensional correlation analysis, and parallel factor analysis. These findings suggest that dehydration, deamination, and decarboxylation reactions may be responsible for removing HMs within SS. These findings have a positive impact on further elucidating the effects of protic ionic liquid in SS pretreatment, thereby facilitating the efficient utilization of municipal SS resources.

Abstract:Wastewater sludge in Hangzhou Qige Municipal Sewage Plant was used to study the removal rate of heavy metals in sludge using a novel equipment designed in our laboratory. Five groups of sludge samples, mixed with ethylenediamine at the V/V ratio of 0, 0.04, 0.05, 0.06 and 0.07 (C2H8N2 /Sludge sample) were electrified for 120hours at a constant direct voltage of 18V. The effects of heavy metals removal on acidification of sludge generated by anode together with ethylenediamine chelation were studied. The results show that acidification generated by anode has played an important role in removing heavy metals from sludge. The addition of ethylenediamine has no significant effect on pH decrease and electric current density in the electric repair process; however, it effectively improved the removal of heavy metals in sludge. Moreover, it was found that various ethylenediamine dosage leads to different reaction efficiencies during the electrokinetic remediation. When ethylenediamine was added at a ratio of 0.06, the removal rates of Zn, Cu and Pb were 87.51%, 67.64% and 57.79% respectively, the overall removal rate is the best. The addition of ethylenediamine has a significant effect on the change of the migration process of heavy metals present in the experimental sludge. We observed the decreased amount of heavy metals in their stable species such as residual state and organic state as well as the increase in transferable form such as exchangeable state.

Abstract:In this paper,municipal sewage sludge from Hang-Zhou Qige Waste Water Treatment Plant were studied to investigate the effect of citric acid complexant on the distribution of heavy metals species. Five groups of experiments were electrified with 120 hours at a constant electric current density of 0. 8 m A·cm-2under the addition of citric acid at 0. 00,0. 05,0. 10,0. 20 and 0. 30 mol·L;respectively. And a self developed doubledeck and double-anode electrokinetic reactor was used to remove and recycle heavy metals in sewage sludge using citric acid as complexing agent. The results of parallel tests showed that citric acid can make a lot of reducible zinc turn to weak acid soluble zinc,but it had little influence on the species distribution of Cu. After electrokinetic remediation experiment,the removal rate of Zn and Cu increased with the addition of citric acid. When the concentration of added citric acid was 0. 20 mol·L;,the biggest removal rate of zinc was achieved at 58. 3%while the Cu removal rate was 42. 4%;The biggest Cu removal rate was observed at 0. 10 mol·L;reached to51. 7%,and the removal rate of Zn was 46. 4%;The optimal concentration of citric acid in this research is 0. 10 to 0. 20 mol·L;;But after the citric acid was over-added more than 0. 20 mol·L;,the removal rate of Zn and Cu both dropped since most of heavy metals has turned to complex precipitation in anode region.

Abstract:The combination of bioleaching and electrokinetic remediation has been proved to be an effective method to remove heavy metals from municipal sewage sludge. The results showed that using electrokinetic remediation for six days after bioleaching for four days, the contents of Cu and Zn in sewage sludge decreased from 296.4mgkg−1 and 3756.2mgkg−1 to 63.4mgkg−1 and 33.3mgkg−1, respectively, which could meet the Chinese standard for land application of the heavy metals in sewage sludge. During the bioleaching process, both the organic sulfide fraction of Cu and the carbonate-bound and organic sulfide fractions of Zn transformed to soluble and ionic fractions which could easily migrate to the electrode zone and then accumulate there, Finally, the soluble and ionic fractions of these heavy metals could be disposed of or recycled expediently at the end of electrokinetic remediation.
Removal of toxic metals from sewage sludge by EDTA and hydrodynamic cavitation and use of the sludge as fertilizer

Abstract:Sewage sludge (SS) is rich in plant nutrients, including P, N, and organic C, but often contains toxic metals (TMs), which hinders its potential use in agriculture. The efficiency of removal of TMs by washing with ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA), in combination with hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and the usability of washed sewage sludge as fertilizer were investigated. The environmental risk was assessed. During 8 wash batches an average 35, 68, 47 and 45 % of Pb, Zn, Cd and Cu, respectively, as well as 22 and 5 % Mn and Fe were removed from the SS. The process solutions and EDTA were recycled at a pH gradient of 12.5-2, which was achieved by adding quicklime (CaO) and then acidification by H2SO4, so that no wastewater was produced, only solid waste (ReSoil® method). The quality of the recycled process solutions (they remained unsaturated with salts) and the efficiency of the washing process were maintained across all batches. On average, 46 % of the EDTA was lost during the process and was replenished. The initial leachability of EDTA-mobilized Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr and Fe remaining in the washed SS increased 6-, 17-, 3-, 11- and 11-fold, respectively, but not to hazardous levels except for Zn. After washing, P and K remained in the SS, plant-available P increased 3.3-fold, while total N and C were reduced by 20.28 and 2.44 %, respectively. Washed SS was used as fertilizer in the pot experiment. The yield of Brassica juncea did not improve, the uptake of TMs by the plants and the leaching of TMs from the soil were minimal. Our study highlighted the drawbacks and potential feasibility of the new SS washing method.

Electrokinetic deposition and removal of heavy metals from sewage sludge enhanced with ammonia complexation

Abstract:The experiment used an in-house designed electrokinetic equipment in order to remove heavy metals from municipal wastewater sludge. Ammonia was added and mixed with four groups of sludge samples at ratios of 0, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12(V:V, NH3·H2O/sludge sample). The samples were electrolyzed for 120 hours at a constant DC voltage. The effects of anodic acid generation coupled with ammonia complexation on the enhanced removal of heavy metals from sewage sludge was measured. The results indicated that anodic acidification had a moderate removal rate on heavy metals. Although adding ammonia had no impact on p H and electric current density in the electrokinetic process, it enhanced the trapping and removal rate of heavy metals in the sludge. Results further indicated that different amount of ammonia exerted different levels of removal rates under electrokinetic treatment. When ammonia water was added at a ratio of 0.12, removal rates of Zn and Cu were 91.62% and 71.49%, respectively. Optimal remediation was achieved ata ratio of 0.08 for Pb with a removal rate of 47.85%. The enhanced removal effect by adding ammonia was presumably the result of decreased residual fractions and organic bound fractions, as well as the increased exchangeable fractions of these metals.

Abstract:Heavy metal high content is strictly limited the land application of the sludge, which is considered as the best way for resource utilization. Hence, it is essential to explore a more effective way for reducing toxic metal. In this work, the combined biosurfactant and electrokinetic technique was used to promote toxic metals removal. Electroosmotic flow (EOF), sludge water content, electrolyte and sludge electrical conductivity variations, and removal efficiency, distribution, speciation and binding intensity of heavy metal variations were investigated during the electrokinetic process. The results demonstrated that the combined biosurfactant with electrokinetic technique could enhance toxic metals removal from sludge. In the enhanced electrokinetic treatment, the combined biosurfactant with electrokinetic technique can enhance cumulative electroosmotic flow, and the electrolyte electrical conductivity of anode and cathode, and the EK3 obtained a higher electrical conductivity (EC) than other EK treatments. Heavy metals obtained the highest removal efficiency during the EK3 treatment. Heavy metals distribution demonstrated that 58.63%, 71.34%, 63.04%, 52.95%, 61.74%, 56.24% of copper, zinc, chromium, lead, nickel and manganese migrated into the electrode solution, respectively, and 38.02%, 26.20%, 32.54%, 42.69%, 36.34%, 42.35% of copper, zinc, chromium, lead, nickel and manganese were still remained in the sludge. Heavy metal speciation indicated that the labile speciation percentage decreased. Whereas, the stable speciation percentage increased after the electrokinetic treatments. Heavy metal stability demonstrated that binding intensity increased, due to heavy metal have a higher stable speciation after the electrokinetic treatments.

Abstract:This publication presents a simple and low-cost hydrothermal humification (HTH) treatment of sewage sludge (SS) together with alkali ash (AA) and biomass for simultaneous implementation of heavy metal removal, nutrient recovery (P) and ash refining. The H/C and O/C atomic ratio plots obtained from elemental analysis demonstrate that dehydration and decarboxylation under hydrothermal conditions are elemental reactions leading to sludge/biomass decomposition and artificial humic matter formation. Introduction of plant biomass into sludge-derived samples and adjustment of KOH or alkali ash (AA) mass effectively improve the recovery of P element, realizing high contents of dissolved phosphorus (DP) (from 7045 to 10075 mg/L) at appropriate pH values (6.5 to 7.7). ICP-AES results indicate the drop of Cr and Cd content below detection limit together with a sharp decrease of the elements Cu (from 0.07 to 0.46 mg/g), Zn (from 0.15 to 0.98 mg/g) and Pb (from 0.067 to 0.142 mg/g) after HTH treatment in sludge-derived liquid products and the heavy metal elements enriched in sludge-derived solids can be recovered into industrial salts by subsequent treatment. Pot planting experiments are conducted to investigate the P-availability in both sludge-derived liquids and solids (after treatment of heavy metal recovery) for promotion of plant growth. A higher proportion of shoot-to-root weight (62.1 % versus 46.2 %) and preserved moisture contents (84.7 % versus 83.7 %) when compared to the control groups demonstrate the effect of the presence of more nutrients after addition of sludge-derived liquid products. This work could provide a smart, energy utilization and sustainable fertilization route for planting growth.

The current methods focus on the removal efficiencies of heavy metals, which are high enough to meet the standard of land application, but the treatment cost, the change and retention of nutrients, and the effects on SS properties resulting from heavy metal removal are usually ignored. In this review, the main knowledge gaps are identified and proposals for future research are made. These should comprise determining the underlying mechanisms of current removal methods, optimising and integrating the removal methods, and establishing systematic evaluation standards for these methods. Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization is a promising treatment technology for wet organic solid wastes, due to its energy-efficient production of functionalized carbonaceous materials. However, the usage of sewage sludge (SS) derived hydrochar as phosphorus (P) fertilizer for agricultural soil is inhibited by the presence of heavy metals (HMs). Appropriate HM removal technology is required prior to its land application. In this study, an innovative FeCl 3 -assisted electrokinetic technique coupling with hydrothermal carbonization (FEK–HTC) is proposed to produce SS hydrochars with reduced HM content and increased P-retention. FEK–HTC treatment showed synergistic effects in terms of P retention and HM content reduction (56–64 % for Ni, Cu, and Zn). Furthermore, the toxicity of the remaining HMs was dramatically reduced, e.g., by 39.35 % in the case of Zn. Additionally, FEK–HTC transformed P species in hydrochars into highly bio-available form. Electrokinetic treatment resulted in decreased pH values of SS feedstock and promoted the solubilization and erosion of Ca-associated P, resulting in higher non-apatite inorganic phosphorus contents (12.47 to 23.19 mg·g −1 ) compared to hydrochars from untreated sludge. The P migration patterns during the FEK-HTC treatment were assessed based on the combined result of chemical extraction, 31 P NMR, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT). DGT analysis showed that the addition of treated hydrochars greatly increased the available P content in the soil. The results provide new insights into applying FEK-HTC technique for SS management.

Abstract:By 2050, global sewage sludge production is expected to increase by 51 %, rising from its current level of over 45 million tons of dry solids to nearly 68 million tons. This growth is primarily driven by population growth and the implementation of increasingly stringent environmental regulations. This increase in sewage sludge volume poses substantial challenges for sustainable management due to its complex composition. While sewage sludge contains valuable nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) that make it suitable for agriculture use, the presence of heavy metals (HMs), including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), chrome (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) creates significant barriers to its safe reuse. Inadequately treated sewage sludge, when repeatedly applied to agricultural soils, can lead to the accumulation of HMs, posing risks to long-term soil fertility, crop productivity, and broader environmental health. This review discusses various techniques for de-metallization of sewage sludge, including aerobic- and anaerobic bioleaching, chemical leaching, electrokinetic treatment, and supercritical fluid extraction. Among these techniques, anaerobic bioleaching is identified as the most environmentally sustainable option, as it offers a lower-energy, less chemically intensive approach to decrease HM content in the solid fraction of sewage sludge. This approach utilizes microbial activity under anaerobic conditions to solubilize and remove HMs, while minimizing nutrient loss and preserving the ecological integrity of the treated sewage sludge. Future research should prioritize the optimizing of anaerobic bioleaching processes to enhance both HM removal efficiency and nutrient retention. Additionally, integrating anaerobic bioleaching with air-assisted ultrasonication as a post treatment technology could further improve metal removal efficiency. This review aims to provide a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners seeking environmentally friendly solutions for HM removal from sewage sludge, ensuring its safe reuse in land applications and contributing to a circular agro-economy.
Using Electrode Electrolytes to Enhance Electrokinetic Removal of Heavy Metals from Electroplating Sludge

Abstract:An enhanced EK (electrokinetic) process for the removal of heavy metals from an electroplating sludge was performed by adding electrolytes in electrode chambers. The EK experiments were conducted under a constant cell potential (32V) for 5 days using tap water (TW) and aqueous solution containing sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and citric acid (CA) as electrolytes. The results indicated the removal efficiency of heavy metals using TW and aqueous solution containing SDS and CA as electrolytes were 20–51%, 26–65% and 34–69%, respectively, the highest metal removal performance was found using CA as electrolyte. And the removal efficiency of the five metals from sludge in all the EK experiments was Cr>Zn>Ni>Cu>Pb. And sequential extraction analysis revealed that the binding forms of heavy metals with sludge highly depended on the electrolytes, changed from the most difficult extraction type (residual form) to the easier extraction types (soluble, exchangeable, sorbed, sulfate and carbonate forms) after electrokinetic process.

Abstract:Soil washing is considered a highly efficient technology due to its higher removal rate of multiple heavy metals from contaminated soil. However, previous studies on Cd, Pb and As washing agents for soils with complex contaminations did not consider the differences in As and Cd/Pb properties, resulting in the lack of effective washing compounds and washing conditions for soils with complex contaminations. Moreover, most traditional washing agents can cause secondary pollution. In this study, HEDTA and lactic acid (LA) treatments resulted in a higher Cd and Pb removal, while 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) was more effective in As removal. Most importantly, a new washing strategy was proposed with a new combined high-efficiency washing agents consisting of HEDP + LA + FeCl3 with a ratio of 6:3:1. Considering washing efficiency and consumption under optimal washing conditions, i.e. the soil/liquid (S/L) ratio of 1:20 and washing time of 48 h, the rates of Cd, Pb and As removal were 79.93%, 69.84% and 61.55%, respectively. In addition, washing process could influence the speciation of heavy metals, especially oxidizable and residual Cd and Pb fractions, as well as reducible As fraction. The washing process using the new washing agent can significantly reduce the pollution level and health risk of Cd, Pb and As contamination. The results of this study can provide an efficient washing agent for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils at smelting sites, which will help protect human health.

Abstract:In this work, the novel technology was used to remove heavy metal from sludge. The coupled with biodegradable ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) and approaching anode electrokinetic (AA-EK) technique was used to enhance heavy metal removing from sludge. Electric current, sludge and electrolyte characteristics, heavy metal removal efficiency and residual content distribution, and heavy metal fractions percentage of variation were evaluated during the electrokinetic remediation process. Results demonstrated that the coupled with EDDS and AA-EK technique obtain a predominant heavy metal removal efficiency, and promote electric current increasing during the enhanced electrokinetic remediation process. The catholyte electrical conductivity was higher than the anolyte, and electrical conductivity of near the cathode sludge achieved a higher value than anode sludge during the coupled with EDDS and AA-EK remediation process. AA-EK technique can produce a great number of H+, which caused the sludge acidification and pH decrease. Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Ni and Mn obtain the highest extraction efficiency after the coupled with EDDS and AA-EK remediation, which were 52.2 ± 2.57%, 56.8 ± 3.62%, 60.4 ± 3.62%, 47.2 ± 2.35%, 53.0 ± 3.48%, 54.2 ± 3.43%, respectively. Also, heavy metal fractions analysis demonstrated that the oxidizable fraction percentage decreased slowly after the coupled with EDDS and AA-EK remediation.

Abstract:Heavy metals, including Cd, As, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Mn in sewage sludge (SS) are among the greatest impediments to SS application because of their potential toxicity to living organisms and latent environmental pollution risks. In this study, hydrothermal treatment (HT)/alkaline HT combined with pyrolysis was used to treat SS for heavy metal immobilization . The heavy metal characteristics, including total, fraction, and leaching concentrations and potential ecological risks, were comprehensively investigated to ensure the safe application of biochar. The results showed that the heavy metals mainly remained in the hydrochar and biochar. Additionally, both HT and alkaline HT promoted the residual fractions of Cr, Zn, Ni, and Cu in biochar. Furthermore, alkaline HT-aided pyrolysis was more effective for immobilizing Zn and Ni with their residual fractions increasing by 100% and 60% respectively, compared with direct sludge pyrolysis. Moreover, the ecological risk of heavy metals in SS significantly decreased from 57.27 to 30.05 after alkaline HT-combined pyrolysis treatment, contributing to the low potential ecological risk of SS-based biochar. This study provides a promising strategy for converting SS to biochar with improved heavy metal immobilization.

Abstract:Complex heavy metal (HM)-containing wastewater discharges pose substantial risks to global water ecosystems and human health. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has attracted increased attention as an efficient and low-cost adsorbent in HM-containing wastewater treatment. Therefore, this study systematically evaluates the effect of Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(III) addition on the characteristics, performance and mechanism of AGS in complex HM-containing wastewater treatment process by means of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma spectrocopcy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) fractions detection and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray. The results showed that AGS efficiently eliminated Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(III) by the orchestrated mechanisms of ion exchange, three-layer EPS adsorption [soluble microbial products EPS (SMP-EPS), loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS)], and inner-sphere adsorption; notably, almost 100% of Ni(II) was removed. Three-layer EPS adsorption was the dominant mechanism through which the HM were removed, followed by ion exchange and inner-sphere adsorption. SMP-EPS and TB-EPS were identified as the key EPS fractions for adsorbing Cr(III) and Cu(II), respectively, while Ni(II) was adsorbed evenly on SMP-EPS, TB-EPS, and LB-EPS. Moreover, the rates at which the complex HM penetrated into the granule interior and their affinity for EPS followed the order Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Cr(III). Ultimately, addition of complex HM stimulated microorganisms to excrete massive phosphodiesterases (PDEs), leading to a pronounced decrease in cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) levels, which subsequently suppressed EPS secretion due to the direct linkage between c-di-GMP and EPS. This study unveils the adaptability and removal mechanism of AGS in the treatment of complex HM-containing wastewater, which is expected to provide novel insights for addressing the challenges posed by intricate real wastewater scenarios.

Abstract:Sewage sludge (SS) resulting from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is commonly applied worldwide as a fertilizer in agriculture. This can be done following a rigorous analysis of the sewage sludge composition. Due to its toxic potential, heavy metal ion content is one of the key parameters to test when evaluating SS sample usage as fertilizer. The distribution of metals present in SS samples produced by five municipal WWTPs in Romania was studied. To obtain information regarding metal distribution in SS, a modified ultrasound-assisted extraction procedure of the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) was employed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Co quantitation. Concentrations of these metals were measured using ICP-EOS spectrometry. Method extraction accuracy was verified using CRM-483 certified reference material. Results show that extraction efficiency was lowest for the exchangeable fraction for all studied metals. The detected ion metals were found distributed in fractions (F) 2 and 3, which are unavailable for plants and groundwater under natural environmental conditions. One noteworthy finding was that using ultrapure water for the leachate test resulted in low metal solubility, indicating slight metal desorption in real environmental samples. Furthermore, maize stalk bio-adsorbent was used to minimize metal ion content in WWTP leachate samples produced by the storage of SS in terms of metal ion adsorption.
