Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.
Entropy and curvature: beyond the Peres-Tetali conjecture

Abstract:We study Markov chains with non-negative sectional curvature on finite metric spaces. Neither reversibility, nor the restriction to a particular combinatorial distance are imposed. In this level of generality, we prove that a 1-step contraction in the Wasserstein distance implies a 1-step contraction in relative entropy, by the same amount. Our result substantially strengthens a recent breakthrough of the second author, and has the advantage of being applicable to arbitrary scales. This leads to a time-varying refinement of the standard Modified Log-Sobolev Inequality (MLSI), which allows us to leverage the well-acknowledged fact that curvature improves at large scales. We illustrate this principle with several applications, including birth and death chains, colored exclusion processes, permutation walks, Gibbs samplers for high-temperature spin systems, and attractive zero-range dynamics. In particular, we prove a MLSI with constant equal to the minimal rate increment for the mean-field zero-range process, thereby answering a long-standing question.

Abstract:This paper deals with the question of prescribing the Gaussian curvature on a disk and the geodesic curvature of its boundary by means of a conformal deformation of the metric. We restrict ourselves to a symmetric setting in which the Gaussian curvature is negative, and we are able to give general existence results. Our approach is variational, and solutions will be searched as critical points of an associated functional. The proofs use a perturbation argument via the monotonicity trick of Struwe, together with a blow-up analysis and Morse index estimates. We also give a nonexistence result that shows that, to some extent, the assumptions required for existence are necessary.

Abstract:We show that the linear drift of the Brownian motion on the universal cover of a closed connected smooth Riemannian manifold is C k − 2 C^{k-2} differentiable along any C k C^{k} curve in the manifold of C k C^k Riemannian metrics with negative sectional curvature. We also show that the stochastic entropy of the Brownian motion is C 1 C^1 differentiable along any C 3 C^{3} curve of C 3 C^3 Riemannian metrics with negative sectional curvature. We formulate the first derivatives of the linear drift and stochastic entropy, respectively, and show they are critical at locally symmetric metrics.

Abstract:In this paper we establish new simple local geometric criteria for discrete entropic curvature introduced in [47] that are powerful enough to capture many geometric properties of complex models arising in mathematical physics. These results are robust in the sense that they apply to any discrete graph equipped with a Markov reversible generator. Our definitions of entropic curvature differ from the one of the pioneering works of Erbar-Maas [19,20] (which is already a discrete analog of the Lott-Sturm-Villani entropic curvature in the continuous setting). Singularly, our results provide refined concentration properties related to the celebrated convex-hull method by Talagrand [50,51] for a large class of probability measures that cannot be captured from Erbar- Maas entropic definition of curvature. Our approach gives also a new insight of the convex hull method, without being related to induction arguments. We illustrate the power of our results, as well as the general entropic strategy developed in this paper, to tackle challenging models studied in mathematical physics, including Gibbs measures with interaction potentials such as Ising models on the discrete hypercube and measures with interaction potential on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$. For instance, we significantly improve the constant of the refined convex concentration properties obtained in [2] for Ising models. Moreover, when dealing with the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss model, we improve the previously known bound for entropic curvature by a factor of $\sqrt{n}$. Our simple criteria also provides the expected right order of magnitude $C/\sqrt n$ for the lower-bound on the entropic curvature for the renowned Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model from the spin glass theory. This last result is consistant with the recent works [6,17] on the modified logarithmic Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model.

Abstract:We prove that, for a C 2 non-invertible but non-degenerate map on a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, an invariant measure satisfies an equality relating entropy, folding entropy and negative Lyapunov exponents. Abstract:This note corrects a mistake in the original book in the evolution equations of total curvature for the curve-shrinking flow in an ambient Ricci Flow. The resulting upper bound for the evolution of total curvature is an exponential bound in time. The change involves the multiplicative constant. Here we show that it depends on the initial total curvature and the initial length, rather than just on the initial total curvature as was asserted before. This change does not affect the application of these results to prove finite-time extinction when the third homotopy group of the manifold is non-trivial.

Abstract:In this note, we shall point out that all ``numerically calculations'' and figures in \cite{CaFrLeVa-23} are wrong because these calculations are based on some incorrect formulas. Furthermore, by pointing out several serious errors in \cite{CaFrLeVa-23} and especially by Section 7, Proposition 7.1, Remarks 7.2--7.3, and Section 8 (a result of A. Pierzchalski and B. Ørsted) we show that the conclusions published by Matteo Capoferri, Leonid Friedlander, Michael Levitin and Dmitri Vassiliev (J Geom Anal (2023)33:242) as well as the main ``algorithm'' theory of the book \cite{SaVa-97} are completely wrong. Finally, we explain the correctness of proof of Theorem 1.1 in our paper \cite{Liu-21} by giving some remarks and putting the whole proof in Appendix (see also \cite{Liu-22b} and \cite{Liu-22c}).

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the intersection between geodesic and conformal currents on closed hyperbolic three-manifolds. We use this to prove some sharp bounds which involve the Liouville entropy of a negatively curved metric, the minimal surface entropy, and the area ratio. Using these ideas we also give a new proof of the Mostow Rigidity Theorem in the three-dimensional case.

Abstract:We sharpen a gap theorem of Chan & Lee for nonnegative Ricci curvature manifolds that have positive asymptotic volume ratio and small enough scale-invariant integral curvature (so-called "curvature concentration"), by showing that the curvature concentration need only depend linearly on the asymptotic volume ratio. We prove the result by exhibiting a long-time Ricci flow solution with faster than $1/t$ curvature decay, which allows us to shift the limiting contradiction argument to time infinity and thus obtain an explicit bound on the size of the gap.

Entanglement Negativity Transitions in Chaotic Eigenstates

Abstract:It was recently noted that the entanglement entropy for a subsystem of a chaotic eigenstate exhibits an enhanced correction when the subsystem approaches a phase transition at half the total system size. This enhanced correction was derived for general subsystems by Dong and Wang by summing over noncrossing permutations, which can be thought of as ``saddles'' either in a sum emerging from averaging over Wick contractions or in an analogous gravitational calculation. We extend these results to the case of entanglement negativity, an entanglement measure defined on a bipartite density matrix. We focus on a particular transition previously studied in a toy model of JT gravity, one for which the sum over permutations was found to give similar (or even stronger) enhanced corrections. We derive and resum the relevant permutations to give a form for the averaged negativity spectrum, reproducing the gravitational answer for some quantities and finding tension with other quantities, namely the partially transposed entropy. Along the way, we extend the results of Dong and Wang to the case of $n < 1$ Rényi entropy, showing that it always receives volume law corrections.

Abstract:This is a continuation of our first paper in [WY16]. There are two purposes of this paper: One is to give a proof of the main result in [WY16] without going through the argument depending on numerical effectiveness. The other one is to provide a proof of our conjecture, mentioned in [TY], where the assumption of negative holomorphic sectional curvature is dropped to quasi-negative. We should note that a solution to our conjecture is also provided by Diverio-Trapani [DT]. Both proofs depend on our argument in [WY16]. But our argument here makes use of the argument given by the second author and Cheng in [CY75].
