Abstract:We present the proof of Berger and Turaev of Herman's positive entropy conjecture. In every neighbourhood of identity in the set of smooth symplectic diffeomorphisms of the 2-dimensional disc, there exists a diffeomorphism with positive metric entropy.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a new proof of a density version of Turán's theorem. We also rephrase both the theorem and the proof using entropy. With the entropic formulation, we show that some naturally defined entropic quantity is closely connected to other common quantities such as Lagrangian and spectral radius. In addition, we also determine the Turán density for a new family of hypergraphs, which we call tents. Our result can be seen as a new generalization of Mubayi's result on the extended cliques.

Abstract:Let f : M -> M be a C-1 diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting on a compact Riemanian manifold M without boundary. We state and prove several sufficient conditions for the topological entropy of f to be positive. The conditions deal with the dynamical behaviour of the (non -necessarily invariant) Lebesgue measure. In particular, if the Lebesgue measure is (5 recurrent then the entropy of f is positive. We give counterexamples showing that these sufficient conditions are not necessary. Finally, in the case of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, we give a positive lower bound for the entropy relating it with the dimension of the unstable and stable sub-bundles.
Katok's entropy conjecture near real and complex hyperbolic metrics

Abstract:We show that, given a real or complex hyperbolic metric $g_0$ on a closed manifold $M$ of dimension $n\geq 3$, there exists a neighborhood $\mathcal U$ of $g_0$ in the space of negatively curved metrics such that for any $g\in \mathcal U$, the topological entropy and Liouville entropy of $g$ coincide if and only if $g$ and $g_0$ are homothetic. This provides a partial answer to Katok's entropy rigidity conjecture. As a direct consequence of our theorem, we obtain a local rigidity result of the hyperbolic rank near complex hyperbolic metrics.

Entropy and curvature: beyond the Peres-Tetali conjecture

Abstract:We study Markov chains with non-negative sectional curvature on finite metric spaces. Neither reversibility, nor the restriction to a particular combinatorial distance are imposed. In this level of generality, we prove that a 1-step contraction in the Wasserstein distance implies a 1-step contraction in relative entropy, by the same amount. Our result substantially strengthens a recent breakthrough of the second author, and has the advantage of being applicable to arbitrary scales. This leads to a time-varying refinement of the standard Modified Log-Sobolev Inequality (MLSI), which allows us to leverage the well-acknowledged fact that curvature improves at large scales. We illustrate this principle with several applications, including birth and death chains, colored exclusion processes, permutation walks, Gibbs samplers for high-temperature spin systems, and attractive zero-range dynamics. In particular, we prove a MLSI with constant equal to the minimal rate increment for the mean-field zero-range process, thereby answering a long-standing question.

Abstract:The Kneser--Poulsen conjecture asserts that the volume of a union of balls in Euclidean space cannot be increased by bringing their centres pairwise closer. We prove that its natural information-theoretic counterpart is true. This follows from a complete answer to a question asked in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2210.12842" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.12842">arXiv:2210.12842</a> about Gaussian convolutions, namely that the Rényi entropy comparisons between a probability measure and its contractive image are preserved when both undergo simultaneous heat flow.

Abstract:Let T be the nilpotent group of 4 x 4 real upper triangular matrices. In this note we show that the Euler equations of certain left-invariant riemannian metrics on T have a horseshoe. We also show, with the aid of a numerical computation of a Melnikov-type integral, that the Euler equations of the sub-riemannian Carnot metric on T has a horseshoe. This sharpens an earlier result of Montgomery, Shapiro and Stolin who had shown that the equations are algebraically non-integrable.

Abstract:It is an open problem whether a homeomorphism on a compact metric space satisfying that each proper pair is either positively or negatively Li--Yorke, called completely Li--Yorke chaotic, can have positive entropy. In the present paper, an affirmative answer to this question is given. In fact, for each homeomorphism $T$ with positive entropy such that each proper pair is not two-sided asymptotic, a completely Li--Yorke chaotic homeomorphism with positive entropy associated with the given homeomorphism can be constructed.

Entropy Stability for products of negatively curved symmetric spaces

Abstract:Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed oriented $n$-manifold that is locally isometric to a product $(X^{n_1}_1,g_1)\times\cdots (X_k^{n_k},g_k)$, where each $n_i\ge 3,$ and each factor $(X_i^{n_i},g_i)$ is a negatively curved symmetric space. We study the stability of minimal entropy rigidity for such manifolds. Specifically, we consider whether an entropy-minimizing sequence $(M,g_i)$ converges to the model space in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense after removing negligible subsets. Previously, Song [Son23] established this type of stability for negatively curved symmetric spaces, where both the $n$-volume of the removed subsets and the $(n-1)$-volume of their boundaries converge to zero. We construct a counterexample demonstrating that this stronger stability notion does not generally hold in the product case; in particular, the condition that the $(n-1)$-volume of the boundary of removed subsets converges to zero cannot be imposed. Nonetheless, we prove that an entropy-minimizing sequence $(M,g_i)$ converges to the model space after removing subsets whose $n$-volume converges to zero in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. This result provides a weaker form of stability compared to the negatively symmetric case. A key ingredient in establishing this stability is our proof of the intrinsic uniqueness of the spherical Plateau solution for products of negatively curved symmetric spaces, which is of independent interest.

Abstract:Let $(M^{n},g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with $Ric\geq-(n-1) $. It is well known that the bottom of spectrum $\lambda_{0}$ of its unverversal covering satisfies $\lambda_{0}\leq(n-1) ^{2}/4 $. We prove that equality holds iff $M$ is hyperbolic. This follows from a sharp estimate for the Kaimanovich entropy.

Abstract:Using minimal hypersurfaces, we obtain topological obstructions to admitting complete metrics with positive scalar curvature on a given class of non-compact n-manifolds with n less than 8. We show that the Liouville theorem for a locally conformally flat n-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature follows from the impossibility of there being a positive scalar curvature metric on its connect sum with the n-torus. With the recent work of Chodosh-Li, the Liouville theorem is now proved in all remaining cases. Finally, using MOTS instead of minimal hypersurfaces, we show an Initial Data Set version of these results with the Dominant Energy Scalar appearing instead of positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:LetM be a space-time whose local mass density is non-negative everywhere. Then we prove that the total mass ofM as viewed from spatial infinity (the ADM mass) must be positive unlessM is the flat Minkowski space-time. (So far we are making the reasonable assumption of the existence of a maximal spacelike hypersurface. We will treat this topic separately.) We can generalize our result to admit wormholes in the initial-data set. In fact, we show that the total mass associated with each asymptotic regime is non-negative with equality only if the space-time is flat.

Entanglement Negativity Transitions in Chaotic Eigenstates

Abstract:It was recently noted that the entanglement entropy for a subsystem of a chaotic eigenstate exhibits an enhanced correction when the subsystem approaches a phase transition at half the total system size. This enhanced correction was derived for general subsystems by Dong and Wang by summing over noncrossing permutations, which can be thought of as ``saddles'' either in a sum emerging from averaging over Wick contractions or in an analogous gravitational calculation. We extend these results to the case of entanglement negativity, an entanglement measure defined on a bipartite density matrix. We focus on a particular transition previously studied in a toy model of JT gravity, one for which the sum over permutations was found to give similar (or even stronger) enhanced corrections. We derive and resum the relevant permutations to give a form for the averaged negativity spectrum, reproducing the gravitational answer for some quantities and finding tension with other quantities, namely the partially transposed entropy. Along the way, we extend the results of Dong and Wang to the case of $n < 1$ Rényi entropy, showing that it always receives volume law corrections.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{F}=(M,\mathscr{L},E)$ be a Brody-hyperbolic singular holomorphic foliation on a compact complex manifold $M$. Suppose that $\mathscr{F}$ has isolated singularities and that its Poincaré metric is complete. This is the case for a very large class of singularities, namely, non-degenerate and saddle-nodes in dimension $2$. Let $\mu$ be an ergodic harmonic measure on $\mathscr{F}$. We show that the upper and lower local hyperbolic entropies of $\mu$ are leafwise constant almost everywhere. Moreover, we show that the entropy of $\mu$ is at least $2$.

Abstract:The following inequalities are established, improving a former inequality due to Kojima. For any closed arithmetic hyperbolic $3$--manifold fibering over a circle, the entropy of the pseudo-Anosov monodromy is bounded by the hyperbolic volume of the $3$--manifold, up to a universal constant factor. For any closed hyperbolic $3$--manifold fibering over a circle with systole $\geq\varepsilon>0$, the entropy is bounded by the hyperbolic volume times $\log(3+1/\varepsilon)$, up to a universal constant factor. The proof relies on Heegaard Floer homology and hyperbolic geometry.
