Abstract: We prove the existence of global sections trivializing the Hodge bundles on the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds, a global splitting property of these Hodge bundles. We also prove that a compact Calabi--Yau manifold can not be deformed to its complex conjugate. These results answer certain open questions in the subject. A general result about the period map to be bi-holomorphic from the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to their period domains is proved and applied to the cases of K$3$ surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and hyperk\"ahler manifolds.

Abstract: We prove that the period map from the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to the period domain of polarized Hodge structures is injective. The proof is based on the construction of holomorphic affine structure on the Teichm\"uller space and the construction of the completion space of the Torelli space with respect to the Hodge metric.

Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract: We describe the proof that the period map from the Torelli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds to the classifying space of polarized Hodge structures is an embedding. The proof is based on the constructions of holomorphic affine structure on the Teichm\"uller space and Hodge metric completion of the Torelli space. A canonical global holomorphic section of the holomorphic $(n, 0)$ class on the Teichm\"uller space is constructed.

Surveys in Differential Geometry

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.
Survey on the Canonical Metrics on the Teichmüller Spaces and the Moduli Spaces of Riemann Surfaces

Abstract:This thesis results from an intensive study on the canonical metrics on the Teichmüller spaces and the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. There are several renowned classical metrics on $T_g$ and $\mathcal{M}_g$, including the Weil-Petersson metric, the Teichmüller metric, the Kobayashi metric, the Bergman metric, the Carathéodory metric and the Kähler-Einstein metric. The Teichmüller metric, the Kobayashi metric and the Carathéodory metric are only (complete) Finsler metrics, but they are effective tools in the study of hyperbolic property of $\mathcal{M}_g$. The Weil-Petersson metric is an incomplete Kähler metric, while the Bergman metric and the Kähler-Einstein metric are complete Kähler metrics. However, McMullen introduced a new complete Kähler metric, called the McMullen metric, by perturbing the Weil-Petersson metric. This metric is indeed equivalent to the Teichmüller metric. Recently, Liu-Sun-Yau proved that the equivalence of the Kähler-Einstein metric to the Teichmüller metric, and hence gave a positive answer to a conjecture proposed by Yau. Their approach in the proof is to introduce two new complete Kähler metrics, namely, the Ricci metric and the perturbed Ricci metric, and then establish the equivalence of the Ricci metric to the Kähler-Einstein metric and the equivalence of the Ricci metric to the McMullen metric. The main purpose of this thesis is to survey the properties of these various metrics and the geometry of $T_g$ and $\mathcal{M}_g$ induced by these metrics.

Abstract:. We use the existence of a bounded uniformly Hölder continuous plurisubharmonic exhaustion function to characterize the Bergman completeness of a complete Kähler manifold. As an application, we proved that any simply-connected complete Kähler manifold with sectional curvature bounded above by a negative constant is Bergman complete.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov-Hausdorff compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein Del Pezzo surfaces in each degree agrees with certain algebro-geometric compactification. In particular, this recovers Tian's theorem on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on smooth Del Pezzo surfaces and classifies all the degenerations of such metrics. The proof is based on a combination of both algebraic and differential geometric techniques.

Abstract:Given a polarized Kähler manifold (X,L). The space ℋ of Kähler metrics in $$ 2_\Pi {c_1}{(L)}$$ is an infinite-dimensional Riemannian symmetric space. As a metric space, it has non-positive curvature. There is associated to ℋ a sequence of finite-dimensional symmetric spaces $$ \mathcal{B}_{k}{({k}\, \epsilon \,\mathbb{N})} $$ of non-compact Type. We prove that ℋ is the limit of $$ \mathcal{B}_{k} $$ as metric spaces in certain sense. As applications, this provides more geometric proofs of certain known geometric properties of the space ℋ.

Abstract:In this article, we use the pluricomplex Green function to give a sufficient condition for the existence and the completeness of the Bergman metric. As a consequence, we proved that a simply connected complete Kahler manifold possesses a complete Bergman metric provided that the Riemann sectional curvature less than or equal to -A/rho(2), which implies a conjecture of Greene and Wu. Moreover, we obtain a sharp estimate for the Bergman distance on such manifolds.

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the infinitesimal geometry of the Thurston metric, showing that the topology, convex geometry and metric geometry of the tangent and cotangent spheres based at any marked hyperbolic surface representing a point in Teichmüller space can recover the marking and geometry of this marked surface. We then translate the results concerning the infinitesimal structures to global geometric statements for the Thurston metric, most notably deriving rigidity statements for the Thurston metric analogous to the celebrated Royden theorem.

Abstract:The paper presents some recent results on the Weil-Petersson geometry theory of the universal Teichmüller space, a topic which is important in Teichmüller theory and has wide applications to various areas such as mathematical physics, differential equation and computer vision. \noindent (1) It is shown that a sense-preserving homeomorphism $h$ on the unit circle belongs to the Weil-Petersson class, namely, $h$ can be extended to a quasiconformal mapping to the unit disk whose Beltrami coefficient is squarely integrable in the Poincaré metric if and only if $h$ is absolutely continuous such that $\log h'$ belongs to the Sobolev class $H^{\frac 12}$. This solves an open problem posed by Takhtajan-Teo [TT2] in 2006 and investigated later by Figalli [Fi], Gay-Balmaz-Marsden-Ratiu ([GMR], [GR]) and others. \noindent The intrinsic characterization (1) of the Weil-Petersson class has the following applications which are also explored in this paper: \noindent (2) It is proved that there exists a quasisymmetric homeomorphism of the Weil-Petersson class which belongs neither to the Sobolev class $H^{\frac 32}$ nor to the Lipschitz class $\Lambda^1$, which was conjectured very recently by Gay-Balmaz-Ratiu [GR] when studying the classical Euler-Poincaré equation in the new setting that the involved sense-preserving homeomorphisms on the unit circle belong to the Weil-Petersson class. \noindent (3) It is proved that the flows of the $H^{\frac 32}$ vector fields on the unit circle are contained in the Weil-Petersson class, which was also conjectured by Gay-Balmaz-Ratiu [GR] during their above mentioned research. \noindent (4) A new metric is introduced on the Weil-Petersson Teichmüller space and is shown to be topologically equivalent to the Weil-Petersson metric.

On Local Comparison Between Various Metrics on Teichmüller Spaces

Abstract:There are several Teichmüller spaces associated to a surface of infinite topological type, after the choice of a particular basepoint (a complex or a hyperbolic structure on the surface). Such spaces include the quasiconformal Teichmüller space, the length spectrum Teichmüller space, the Fenchel-Nielsen Teichmüller space, and there are others. In general, these spaces are set-theoretically different. An important question is therefore to understand relations between them. Each of these spaces is equipped with its own metric, and under some hypotheses, there are inclusions between them. In this paper, we obtain local metric comparison results on these inclusions, namely, we show that the inclusions are locally bi-Lipschitz under certain hypotheses. To obtain these results, we use some hyperbolic geometry estimates that give new results also for surfaces of finite type. We recall that in the case of a surface of finite type, all these Teichmüller spaces coincide setwise. In the case of a surface of finite type with no boundary components (but possibly with punctures), we show that the restriction of the identity map to any thick part of Teichmüller space is globally bi-Lipschitz with respect to the length spectrum metric on the domain and the classical Teichmüller metric on the range. In the case of a surface of finite type with punctures and boundary components, there is a metric on the Teichmüller space which we call the arc metric, whose definition is analogous to the length spectrum metric, but which uses lengths of geodesic arcs instead of lengths of closed geodesics. We show that the restriction of the identity map to any “relative thick” part of Teichmüller space is globally bi-Lipschitz, with respect to any of the three metrics: the length spectrum metric, the Teichmüller metric and the arc metric on the domain and on the range.
On Teichmüller Spaces of Surfaces with Boundary

Abstract:We characterize hyperbolic metrics on compact triangulated surfaces with boundary using a variational principle. As a consequence, a new parameterization of the Teichmüller space of a compact surface with boundary is produced. In the new parameterization, the Teichmüller space becomes an explicit open convex polytope. Our results can be considered as a generalization of the simplicial coordinate of Penner [P1], [P2] for hyperbolic metrics with cusp ends to the case of surfaces with geodesic boundary. It is conjectured that the Weil-Petersson symplectic form can be expressed explicitly in terms of the new coordinate.
