Abstract:We show that the linear drift of the Brownian motion on the universal cover of a closed connected smooth Riemannian manifold is C k − 2 C^{k-2} differentiable along any C k C^{k} curve in the manifold of C k C^k Riemannian metrics with negative sectional curvature. We also show that the stochastic entropy of the Brownian motion is C 1 C^1 differentiable along any C 3 C^{3} curve of C 3 C^3 Riemannian metrics with negative sectional curvature. We formulate the first derivatives of the linear drift and stochastic entropy, respectively, and show they are critical at locally symmetric metrics.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the intersection between geodesic and conformal currents on closed hyperbolic three-manifolds. We use this to prove some sharp bounds which involve the Liouville entropy of a negatively curved metric, the minimal surface entropy, and the area ratio. Using these ideas we also give a new proof of the Mostow Rigidity Theorem in the three-dimensional case.

Abstract:We prove that, for a C 2 non-invertible but non-degenerate map on a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, an invariant measure satisfies an equality relating entropy, folding entropy and negative Lyapunov exponents. This generalizes Ledrappier-Young’s entropy formula [5] (for negative Lyapunov exponents of diffeomorphisms) to the case of endomorphisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the information-theoretic approach to study curvature-dimension condition, rigidity theorems and entropy differential inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. We prove the equivalence of the ${\rm CD}(K, m)$-condition for $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $m\in [n, \infty]$ and some entropy differential inequalities along the geodesics on the Wasserstein space over a Riemannian manifold. The rigidity models of the entropy differential inequalities are the $K$-Einstein manifolds and the $(K, m)$-Einstein manifolds with Hessian solitons. Moreover, we prove the monotonicity and rigidity theorem of the $W$-entropy along the geodesics on the Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds with CD$(0, m)$-condition. Finally, we compare our work with the synthetic geometry developed by Lott-Villani and Sturm.

Entropy and curvature: beyond the Peres-Tetali conjecture

Abstract:We study Markov chains with non-negative sectional curvature on finite metric spaces. Neither reversibility, nor the restriction to a particular combinatorial distance are imposed. In this level of generality, we prove that a 1-step contraction in the Wasserstein distance implies a 1-step contraction in relative entropy, by the same amount. Our result substantially strengthens a recent breakthrough of the second author, and has the advantage of being applicable to arbitrary scales. This leads to a time-varying refinement of the standard Modified Log-Sobolev Inequality (MLSI), which allows us to leverage the well-acknowledged fact that curvature improves at large scales. We illustrate this principle with several applications, including birth and death chains, colored exclusion processes, permutation walks, Gibbs samplers for high-temperature spin systems, and attractive zero-range dynamics. In particular, we prove a MLSI with constant equal to the minimal rate increment for the mean-field zero-range process, thereby answering a long-standing question.

On the curvatures of random complex submanifolds

Abstract:For any integers $n\geq 2$ and $1\leq r\leq n-1$ satisfying $3r\geq 2n-1$, we show that the expected volume fraction of a random degree $d$ complex submanifold of $\C\mathbb{P}^n$ of codimension $r$ where the bisectional holomorphic curvature (for the induced ambient metric) is negative tends to one when $d$ goes to infinity. Here, the probability measure is the natural one associated with the Fubini--Study metric. We provide similar estimates for the holomorphic sectional curvature, the Ricci curvature, and the scalar curvature. Our results hold more generally for random submanifolds within any complex projective manifold.

Abstract:This paper deals with the question of prescribing the Gaussian curvature on a disk and the geodesic curvature of its boundary by means of a conformal deformation of the metric. We restrict ourselves to a symmetric setting in which the Gaussian curvature is negative, and we are able to give general existence results. Our approach is variational, and solutions will be searched as critical points of an associated functional. The proofs use a perturbation argument via the monotonicity trick of Struwe, together with a blow-up analysis and Morse index estimates. We also give a nonexistence result that shows that, to some extent, the assumptions required for existence are necessary.

A conformal approach to the stability of Einstein spaces with spatial sections of negative scalar curvature

Abstract:In this article, it is shown how the extended conformal Einstein field equations and a gauge based on the properties of conformal geodesics can be used to analyse the non-linear stability of de Sitter-like spacetimes with spatial sections of negative scalar curvature. This class of spacetimes admits a smooth conformal extension with a space-like conformal boundary. Central to the analysis is the use of conformal Gaussian systems to obtain a hyperbolic reduction of the conformal Einstein field equations for which standard Cauchy stability results for symmetric hyperbolic systems can be employed. The use of conformal methods allows us to rephrase the question of the global existence of solutions to the Einstein field equations into considerations of finite existence time for the conformal evolution system.

Abstract:We develop an approach to the theory nonholonomic relativistic stochastic processes on curved spaces. The Ito and Stratonovich calculus are formulated for spaces with conventional horizontal (holonomic) and vertical (nonholonomic) splitting defined by nonlinear connection structures. Geometric models of relativistic diffusion theory are elaborated for nonholonomic (pseudo) Riemannian manifolds and phase velocity spaces. Applying the anholonomic deformation method, the field equations in Einstein gravity and various modifications are formally integrated in general forms, with generic off-diagonal metrics depending on some classes of generating and integration functions. Choosing random generating functions we can construct various classes of stochastic Einstein manifolds. We show how various types of stochastic gravitational interactions with mixed holonomic/ nonholonomic and random variables can be modelled in explicit form and study their main geometric and stochastic properties. Finally, there are analyzed the conditions when non-random classical gravitational processes transform into stochastic ones and inversely.

Abstract:In this work, we consider sequence of metrics with almost non-negative scalar curvature on torus. We show that if the sequence is uniformly conformal to another sequence of metrics with bounded Ricci geometry, then it converges to a flat metric in the volume preserving intrinsic flat sense, the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense and L-p sense. Moreover, similar stability also holds on manifolds with non-positive Yamabe invariant.

Abstract:Given any half-sided modular inclusion of standard subspaces, we show that the entropy function associated with the decreasing one-parameter family of translated standard subspaces is convex for any given (not necessarily smooth) vector in the underlying Hilbert space. In second quantisation, this infers the convexity of the vacuum relative entropy with respect to the translation parameter of the modular tunnel of von Neumann algebras. This result allows us to study the QNEC inequality for coherent states in a free Quantum Field Theory on a stationary curved spacetime, given a KMS state. To this end, we define wedge regions and appropriate (deformed) subregions. Examples are given by the Schwarzschild spacetime and null translated subregions with respect to the time translation Killing flow. More generally, we define wedge and stripe regions on a globally hyperbolic spacetime, so to have non trivial modular inclusions of von Neumann algebras, and make our analysis in this context.

Abstract:We consider the geodesic flow for a rank one non-positive curvature closed manifold. We prove an asymptotic version of the Central Limit Theorem for families of measures constructed from regular closed geodesics converging to the Bowen-Margulis-Knieper measure of maximal entropy. The technique expands on ideas of Denker, Senti and Zhang, who proved this type of asymptotic Lindeberg Central Limit Theorem on periodic orbits for expansive maps with the specification property. We extend these techniques from the uniform to the non-uniform setting, and from discrete-time to continuous-time. We consider Hölder observables subject only to the Lindeberg condition and a weak positive variance condition. If we assume a natural strengthened positive variance condition, the Lindeberg condition is always satisfied. Our results extend to dynamical arrays of Hölder observables, and to weighted periodic orbit measures which converge to a unique equilibrium state.
