Modular Innovation In Developing Countries Based On International Manufacturing Network

Abstract:Since 1980's, several streams have been affecting the global manufacturing system greatly. Advanced IT technologies are broadly applied in manufacturing industries. Multi-national companies (MNCs) and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) all increasingly focus their business on core operation units. The international innovation cradles and resources, tend to be more dispersive and diversiform over the world. Based on the above causes, the new decentralization-integration innovation pattern which is built on the international synergic manufacturing network and the regional specialization clusters has evolved into a new innovation current in some developing countries and new industrialized regions. That new pattern is modular innovation which focuses its innovation actions on the medial productions and dissolvable operation units of complex systems. The modular innovation mode has some significant influence on modem international manufacturing. First, it is useful to exert the potentials and advantages of inter-region intellective learning and flow. Second, it can lower transaction cost inside of regional clusters. Third, it redounds to the specialization of different reciprocal cooperators. Forth, it can become the ligament of dynamic alliances between MNCs and regional SMEs in developing countries. In this way, MNCs connect new innovation cradles in developing countries and new industrialization countries, and go shares benefits from polycentric modular innovation and agile integrative manufacture which always went along among developed countries in the past. This paper emphasizes study on the conceptual framework, inherent mechanism, driving factors of modular innovation mode, and the different functions of MNCs and SMEs in this mode.
