Abstract:Since 1990s's, with the merging trend of knowledge such as information science, naro-technology and system science, the global innovation cradles and resources are more dispersive. MNCs and local SMEs all increasingly focus on their core competitive advantages. The decentralization-integration innovation pattern, building upon the global synergic innovation network and the regional specialization innovation clusters has evolved into a new innovation current over the world. That new pattern is modular innovation which focuses its innovation actions on the medial productions and dissolvable operation units of complex systems. It has significant effects for modem international manufacturing. First, it is useful to exert the potentials and advantages of inter-region intellective learning and flow. Second, it can lower transaction cost inside of regional clusters. Third, it benefits specialization of different reciprocal cooperators. Forth, it can qua ligament of dynamic alliances between MNCs and regional SMEs in developing countries. In this way, MNCs connect new innovation cradles in developing countries and new industrialization countries, and share benefits from polycentric modular innovation and agile innovation synergy mechanism. This paper emphasizes study on the conceptual framework, inherent mechanism, driving factors of modular innovation mode, and the different functions of MNCs and SMEs in this mode.
