Abstract:Stirling-type pulse tube cryocoolers (SPTCs) working at liquid-helium temperatures are attractive in space applications because they have advantages of high reliability, compactness, etc. However, the refrigeration efficiency is as low as 0.5% of Carnot efficiency or less. A method of increasing the cross-sectional area of the regenerator at the colder part is proposed in this paper, so as to reduce the heat-associated enthalpy flow at the cold end and improve the performance of the regenerative refrigerators at liquid-helium temperatures, and it is verified through experiments for the first time. Two kinds of variable cross-sectional structures are used in the experiments, which both increase the volume of the regenerator at the colder part. The no-load temperature of the refrigerator reaches 3.87 K, which is about 0.14 K lower than that of the refrigerator with a uniform cross-sectional regenerator under the same working conditions, and the coefficient of performance (COP) is increased by 66% at 4.2 K, and the precooling temperature is 16 K in this case. Theoretical analyses show that there are several reasons for reducing the heat-associated enthalpy flow at the cold end, including: (1). increase of the heat transfer area between the working fluid and the matrix; (2). increase of the total heat capacity of the matrix at the cold end. It is found that the lower the refrigeration temperature, the more serious the real gas effect, resulting in a more significant improvement. However, the increase in the cross-sectional area causes some side effects of reducing both the impedance of the regenerator and the flow rate of the working gas, resulting in a lower heat transfer coefficient. A smaller benefit is got as the refrigeration temperature rises, and the improvement of the COP tends to vanish at about 6 K. It is also found that the performance improvement is more significant when the regenerative efficiency is lower. This new method should provide a reference for further improving the performance of the regenerative refrigerator at liquid-helium temperatures.
