Abstract:The possibility of corrosion of power plant boiler components is always a major concern when high sulfur and high chlorine coals are used. The major advantage of fluidized bed combustion (FBC) of fossil fuels is the ability to absorb SO2 by limestone directly in the combustor with high desulfurization efficiency. At the same time, limestone can also capture Hel to form CaCl2 in the FBC system. This helps reduce corrosion caused by chloride. However, the optimum temperature for capturing hydrogen chloride by limestone in the FBC combustor is<600 degrees C, whereas the optimum temperature for capturing SO2 is 850 degrees C. In order to better understand the behavior of chlorine in an FBC system during combustion processes, a comprehensive study was carried out in a bench scale 0.1MW(th) FBC system at Western Kentucky University. Two coals with different sulfur and chlorine contents were used in this study. The study concentrated on the release of SOx and HCl, the effect of operating parameters on the reduction of SOx and HCl in the flue gas, and the interaction between HCl and SOx. The optimum operation conditions to suppress emissions of HCl and SOx from FBC systems were determined.
