Abstract:Active modulation of light with large optical bandwidths (∼100 nm [1]) is required in photonic devices, such as modulators for fiber communications [1] and saturable absorbers for ultrafast pulse generation [2,3]. Present modulators use expensive materials, (e.g. LiNbO 3 [4], III-V semiconductors [5], and Ge on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) [6]), and are limited by narrowband operation (∼20 nm for quantum-confined Stark effect devices [7], or <0.1 nm for resonators [8]), or high loss (∼80% in Si Mach-Zehnder modulators [9]). Single layer graphene (SLG) can be transferred and integrated on a variety of waveguide systems (e.g. a-Si, Si 3 N 4 ) while offering a full-band operation [10]. In all-fiber platforms, including ultrafast lasers [2,3], high coupling losses (∼60% from fiber to SOI waveguide [6]) are driving development of fiber-based modulators. Ref. 3 reported an electrically controllable all-fiber optical modulator with a SLG transistor on a side-polished fiber. However, its gating speed was limited to∼300 Hz [11] due to the low mobility of the ionic liquid used for gating. Here, we report a graphene-microfiber modulator by integrating a microfiber onto a graphene (SLG plated) capacitor (GC). By varying the microfiber size and length we control the light interaction with the biased SLG plates. This can be used for active control of ultrafast laser working in continuous wave, Q-switching and mode-locking operations.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultrafast optical modulation using a single 1-μm-diameter graphene-decorated microfiber, which is fabricated with a convenient and controllable evanescent-field-induced deposition method. Benefitting from the significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction of the subwavelength transvers dimension of the microfiber and accumulation of the saturable absorption of the piled graphene flakes, the microfiber shows nonlinear saturable absorption with a peak power threshold down to 1.75 W (60 MW/cm<sup>2</sup>), with a measured response time of about 3.5 ps.

Abstract:Graphene-doped polymer nanofibers are fabricated by taper drawing of solvated polyvinyl alcohol doped with liquid-phase exfoliated graphene flakes. Nanofibers drawn this way typically have diameters measured in hundreds of nanometers and lengths in tens of millimeters; they show excellent uniformity and surface smoothness for optical waveguiding. Owing to their tightly confined waveguiding behavior, light–matter interaction in these subwavelength-diameter nanofibers is significantly enhanced. Using approximately 1350-nm-wavelength femto-second pulses, we demonstrate saturable absorption behavior in these nanofibers with a saturation threshold down to 0.25 pJ pulse −1 (peak power ∼1.3 W). Additionally, using 1064-nm-wavelength nanosecond pulses as switching light, we show all-optical modulation of a 1550-nm-wavelength signal light guided along a single nanofiber with a switching peak power of ∼3.2 W.

Abstract:Graphene is an optical material of unusual characteristics because of its linearly dispersive conduction and valence bands and the strong interband transitions. It allows broadband light-matter interactions with ultrafast responses and can be readily pasted to surfaces of functional structures for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Recently, graphene-based optical modulators have been demonstrated with electrical tuning of the Fermi level of graphene. Their operation bandwidth, however, was limited to about 1 GHz by the response of the driving electrical circuit. Clearly, this can be improved by an all-optical approach. Here, we show that a graphene-clad microfiber all-optical modulator can achieve a modulation depth of 38% and a response time of ∼ 2.2 ps, limited only by the intrinsic carrier relaxation time of graphene. This modulator is compatible with current high-speed fiber-optic communication networks and may open the door to meet future demand of ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:We demonstrate an effective approach to transferring micron-size CVD graphene layers onto freestanding microfibers. With micro-manipulation, the coating position and length of the graphene films can be precisely controlled. By coating micrometer-scale (e.g., 20 mu M) graphene films onto microfibers with diameters down to 1 mu m, we can achieve significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction (e.g., a low saturable-absorption threshold of 40 MW/cm(2)) and simultaneously maintain a high transmission (73% in maximum) as well. In addition, we use these microscale CVD graphene-coated microfibers (GCMs) as saturable absorbers for all-optical modulation at 1550-nm wavelength with a modulation depth of 12% and passively mode-locked fiber lasing with pulse duration down to 970 fs. Abstract:We propose a graphene-based modulator integrated into currently used communication fibers. The graphene is directly built into the core of the fiber to ensure the coupling efficiency. The fiber is deliberately side-polished to enhance the light-graphene interaction. The two-dimensional model analysis method and three-dimensional finite difference time domain method are used to rigorously disclose the light modulation mechanism under the anisotropic graphene modeling, which is merely conducted in previous studies. Based on such a structure, a phase modulator with an arm length of 127 μm is numerically demonstrated with enhanced modulation efficiency. A quasi-linear relation between the phase change and chemical potential of graphene is found theoretically for the first time, providing a large linear dynamic range to control the phase of optical modulation.

Abstract:Graphene's atomic thickness, gapless Dirac–Fermionic band structure, and large thermal conductivity make it a promising element for applications in photonic integrated devices. Importantly, actively tunable graphene‐waveguide‐integrated optoelectronic devices can potentially be utilized for the realization of reconfigurable photonic systems. Since electrical device control is always preferred, researchers have previously demonstrated gate‐variable graphene devices; however, electrical control remains challenging, particularly in all‐fiber systems because of the required complicated configuration and fabrication techniques along with additional signal loss. Here, a graphene‐fiber‐integrated platform is proposed and the manipulation of its nonlinear optical properties is demonstrated by engineering the Fermi–Dirac distribution of graphene based on a convenient electric heating method. For the first time, it is experimentally shown that the nonlinear optical absorption of graphene is correlated to temperature via the thermal relaxation process. In the experiments, the modulation depth variation exceeds 60%. The configuration is simple, cost‐effective, and can be readily extended to other 2D materials. It is believed that this work can contribute to building miniature and compact graphene‐fiber‐integrated devices for actively tunable multifunctional applications.

Abstract:The extraordinary optical properties of single-layer graphene have spurred the development of a variety of photonic components. We have previously demonstrated a scalable and versatile platform to facilitate the integration of graphene and other 2-D materials with chalcogenide glass-based planar photonics. In this paper, we detail the design criteria and optimization guidelines towards high-performance graphene-integrated thermo-optic (TO) switches based on the chalcogenide glass-on-graphene platform. Notably, absorption loss of graphene can be reduced to < 20 dB/cm when it is sandwiched inside photonic structures capitalizing on the anisotropic absorption property of graphene. We quantify energy efficiency of the TO switch, showing that the choice of cladding materials plays a critical role in improving device efficiency. Furthermore, we report a record TO switching efficiency of 10 nm/mW via judicious engineering of the overlap between optical mode and thermal profile.

Abstract:Graphene has shown promising perspectives in optical active components due to the large active-control of its permittivity-variation. This paper systematically reviews the recent developments of graphene-based optical modulators, including material property, single-layer , multi-layer , few-layer graphene-based modulators and corresponding figure-of-merits.The results showed graphene is an excellent material for enhancing silicons weak modulation capability after it is integrated into the silicon platform, showing significant influence on optical interconnects in future integrated optoelectronic circuits.

Abstract:We proposed a nonvolatile optical waveguide switch by utilizing a floating-gate (FG) configuration whose FG layer is a single-layer graphene. The switching signal can be removed after the optical switching is accomplished. The propagation state of light then can be retained by charges trapped in the graphene layer until the next erasing signal. Depending on waveforms of driving signals, the device can work as either a phase shifter or an intensity switch. In the phase shifter mode, a 646-μm-long device can achieve a phase shift of π. Corresponding energy consumptions to program/erase, the π phase shift is 82.8 and 118.2 pJ, respectively. In the intensity switch mode, a 328-μm-long device is able to attenuate the light by 20 dB. Energies consumed by the programming and the erasing operations are 35.7 and 45.4 pJ, respectively.

Abstract:Graphene-photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are obtained by integrating the broadband optical response and electro-optic tunability of graphene with the high-quality waveguide capacity and easy-integrability of the PCF, and this has been proven to be an important step towards multimaterial multifunctional fiber and all-fiber integrated circuits. However, the reported electro-optic modulator based on directly-grown graphene-PCF suffers from very low response speed (below 100 Hz) due to the slow response of ionic liquid. Here, we propose new functional PCFs with a sandwiched graphene/hBN/graphene (Gr/hBN/Gr) film attached to the hole walls of the fibers, and theoretically demonstrate that the in-line modulator based on it can achieve simultaneous single-mode transmission ranging from 1260 nm to 1700 nm (covering all optical communication bands), significant modulation depth (e.g. ∼42 dB mm-1 at 1550 nm) and high modulation speed (up to ∼0.1 GHz). Furthermore, various device functions can be designed by changing the structure of the fiber, including the length, the hole diameter and the layer numbers of graphene and hBN films. This proposed approach directs a viable path to obtain high-performance all-fiber devices based on hybrid two-dimensional material optical fibers.

Abstract:As an exceptional nonlinear material, graphene offers versatile appealing properties, such as electro-optic tunability and high electromagnetic field confinement in the terahertz regime, spurring advance in ultrashort pulse formation, photodetectors and plasmonic emission. However, limited by atomic thickness, weak light–matter interaction still limits the development of integrated optical devices based on graphene. Here, an exquisitely designed meta-cavities combined with patterned graphene is used to overcome this challenge and promote THz-graphene interaction via terahertz location oscillation. By using an 800 nm pump laser, the local field-induced strong interaction allows sensitive responses to the ultrafast energy transfer from the ultrafast optical pump to graphene electron heat, enabling 46.2% enhancement of terahertz transparency. Such optical modulation of terahertz waves shows ultrafast response in delay less than 10 ps. Moreover, thanks to the nature of graphene, the device shows unique potential for electrically dynamic tuning and further bandwidth broadening.

Abstract:2D graphene with tremendous novel properties is an ideal material for optical and optoelectronic applications. Meanwhile, photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have been recognized as next-generation optical fibers that possess a designable porous structure, rich functions, and different working mechanisms. Recently, the integration of graphene with a PCF has formed a new hybrid fiber, a graphene photonic crystal fiber (Gr-PCF), which exhibits an extremely strong and tunable light-matter interaction across a broadband spectrum range and opens up a new interdisciplinary research direction. In this review, recent studies on, and achievements in graphene-traditional fibers and Gr-PCFs have been summarized from the aspects of the development process, preparation method, and device application. First, the graphene properties and the development and characteristics of PCFs are introduced. The discussion is continued with the existing fabrication technologies for hybrid graphene-traditional fibers. Next, the chemical vapor deposition method for Gr-PCFs is elaborated. Then, fiber devices based on graphene-traditional fibers, Gr-PCFs, and other 2D material fibers are presented. To conclude, challenges and perspectives are presented to encourage advanced Gr-PCF study.

Abstract:A fiber‐end‐face‐integrated electrically tunable optical modulator based on graphene field‐effect transistor and the fabrication technique are proposed and demonstrated. The all‐fiber device features a scheme of compactness and high integration when applied to fiber optical system, as well as a low insertion loss since spatial coupling of light is avoided. A reflecting structure is used and the electro‐optic modulator shows vivid modulation when gate voltage gets tuned, with maximum optical reflectance modulation depth over 1% in demonstration. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first time to build an all‐solid gate‐control modulator directly on fiber facet. The fabrication methods introduce workflows of silicon‐on‐insulator processing into the optical fiber end‐face micromachining domain which can be applied to more comprehensive configurations, broadening the path of fiber‐end‐face integrated device.

Abstract:The integration of photonic crystal fibre (PCF) with various functional materials has greatly expanded the application regimes of optical fibre1–12. The emergence of graphene (Gr) has stimulated new opportunities when combined with PCF, allowing for electrical tunability, a broadband optical response and all-fibre integration ability13–18. However, previous demonstrations have typically been limited to micrometre-sized samples, far behind the requirements of real applications at the metre-scale level. Here, we demonstrate a new hybrid material, Gr–PCF, with length up to half a metre, produced using a chemical vapour deposition method. The Gr–PCF shows a strong light–matter interaction with ~8 dB cm−1 attenuation. In addition, the Gr–PCF-based electro-optic modulator demonstrates a broadband response (1,150–1,600 nm) and large modulation depth (~20 dB cm−1 at 1,550 nm) under a low gate voltage of ~2 V. Our results could enable industrial-level graphene applications based on this Gr–PCF and suggest an attractive platform for two-dimensional material-PCF. A hybrid material based on uniform graphene on both the outer surface and inner hole walls of a photonic crystal fibre offers a strong, tunable light–matter interaction and good broadband electro-optic modulation performance under low gate voltage.
