Abstract:We demonstrate ultrafast optical modulation using a single 1-μm-diameter graphene-decorated microfiber, which is fabricated with a convenient and controllable evanescent-field-induced deposition method. Benefitting from the significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction of the subwavelength transvers dimension of the microfiber and accumulation of the saturable absorption of the piled graphene flakes, the microfiber shows nonlinear saturable absorption with a peak power threshold down to 1.75 W (60 MW/cm2), with a measured response time of about 3.5 ps.

Abstract:Graphene is an optical material of unusual characteristics because of its linearly dispersive conduction and valence bands and the strong interband transitions. It allows broadband light-matter interactions with ultrafast responses and can be readily pasted to surfaces of functional structures for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Recently, graphene-based optical modulators have been demonstrated with electrical tuning of the Fermi level of graphene. Their operation bandwidth, however, was limited to about 1 GHz by the response of the driving electrical circuit. Clearly, this can be improved by an all-optical approach. Here, we show that a graphene-clad microfiber all-optical modulator can achieve a modulation depth of 38% and a response time of ∼ 2.2 ps, limited only by the intrinsic carrier relaxation time of graphene. This modulator is compatible with current high-speed fiber-optic communication networks and may open the door to meet future demand of ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:Active modulation of light with large optical bandwidths (∼100 nm [1]) is required in photonic devices, such as modulators for fiber communications [1] and saturable absorbers for ultrafast pulse generation [2,3]. Present modulators use expensive materials, (e.g. LiNbO 3 [4], III-V semiconductors [5], and Ge on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) [6]), and are limited by narrowband operation (∼20 nm for quantum-confined Stark effect devices [7], or <0.1 nm for resonators [8]), or high loss (∼80% in Si Mach-Zehnder modulators [9]). Single layer graphene (SLG) can be transferred and integrated on a variety of waveguide systems (e.g. a-Si, Si 3 N 4 ) while offering a full-band operation [10]. In all-fiber platforms, including ultrafast lasers [2,3], high coupling losses (∼60% from fiber to SOI waveguide [6]) are driving development of fiber-based modulators. Ref. 3 reported an electrically controllable all-fiber optical modulator with a SLG transistor on a side-polished fiber. However, its gating speed was limited to∼300 Hz [11] due to the low mobility of the ionic liquid used for gating. Here, we report a graphene-microfiber modulator by integrating a microfiber onto a graphene (SLG plated) capacitor (GC). By varying the microfiber size and length we control the light interaction with the biased SLG plates. This can be used for active control of ultrafast laser working in continuous wave, Q-switching and mode-locking operations.

Abstract:Summary from only given. Integration of miniaturized elements has been a major driving force behind modern ultrafast photonics. Nanowires have emerged as potential building blocks for compact photonic circuits and devices in nanophotonics. We demonstrate here ultrafast optical modulation and correlation on the single-nanowire scale. Based on saturable absorption in graphene films, we show ultrafast optical modulation in a graphene flakes doped polymer nanofiber and graphene film coated ZnO nanowire. Also, based on imaging the transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) from a cadmium sulfide (CdS) and a CdTe nanowires, as well as converting the TSHG spatial image into the temporal profile of the pulses, we demonstrate ultrafast optical correlation with pulse energy down to femto-joules.
Graphene-doped polymer nanofibers for low-threshold nonlinear optical waveguiding

Abstract:Graphene-doped polymer nanofibers are fabricated by taper drawing of solvated polyvinyl alcohol doped with liquid-phase exfoliated graphene flakes. Nanofibers drawn this way typically have diameters measured in hundreds of nanometers and lengths in tens of millimeters; they show excellent uniformity and surface smoothness for optical waveguiding. Owing to their tightly confined waveguiding behavior, light–matter interaction in these subwavelength-diameter nanofibers is significantly enhanced. Using approximately 1350-nm-wavelength femto-second pulses, we demonstrate saturable absorption behavior in these nanofibers with a saturation threshold down to 0.25 pJ pulse −1 (peak power ∼1.3 W). Additionally, using 1064-nm-wavelength nanosecond pulses as switching light, we show all-optical modulation of a 1550-nm-wavelength signal light guided along a single nanofiber with a switching peak power of ∼3.2 W.

Abstract:Graphene, whose absorbance is approximately independent of wavelength, allows broadband light–matter interactions with ultrafast responses. The interband optical absorption of graphene can be saturated readily under strong excitation, thereby enabling scientists to exploit the photonic properties of graphene to realize ultrafast lasers. The evanescent field interaction scheme of the propagating light with graphene covered on a D-shaped fibre or microfibre has been employed extensively because of the nonblocking configuration. Obviously, most of the fibre surface is unused in these techniques. Here, we exploit a graphene-clad microfibre (GCM) saturable absorber in a mode-locked fibre laser for the generation of ultrafast pulses. The proposed all-surface technique can guarantee a higher efficiency of light–graphene interactions than the aforementioned techniques. Our GCM-based saturable absorber can generate ultrafast optical pulses within 1.5 μm. This saturable absorber is compatible with current fibre lasers and has many merits such as low saturation intensities, ultrafast recovery times and wide wavelength ranges. The proposed saturable absorber will pave the way for graphene-based wideband photonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate an effective approach to transferring micron-size CVD graphene layers onto freestanding microfibers. With micro-manipulation, the coating position and length of the graphene films can be precisely controlled. By coating micrometer-scale (e.g., 20 mu M) graphene films onto microfibers with diameters down to 1 mu m, we can achieve significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction (e.g., a low saturable-absorption threshold of 40 MW/cm(2)) and simultaneously maintain a high transmission (73% in maximum) as well. In addition, we use these microscale CVD graphene-coated microfibers (GCMs) as saturable absorbers for all-optical modulation at 1550-nm wavelength with a modulation depth of 12% and passively mode-locked fiber lasing with pulse duration down to 970 fs. Abstract:We propose a graphene-based modulator integrated into currently used communication fibers. The graphene is directly built into the core of the fiber to ensure the coupling efficiency. The fiber is deliberately side-polished to enhance the light-graphene interaction. The two-dimensional model analysis method and three-dimensional finite difference time domain method are used to rigorously disclose the light modulation mechanism under the anisotropic graphene modeling, which is merely conducted in previous studies. Based on such a structure, a phase modulator with an arm length of 127 μm is numerically demonstrated with enhanced modulation efficiency. A quasi-linear relation between the phase change and chemical potential of graphene is found theoretically for the first time, providing a large linear dynamic range to control the phase of optical modulation.

Abstract:Optical microfibers drawn from conventional fibers have attracted considerable interests and have found many novel applications. Here, we review recent advances in ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers. Starting with characteristics and fabrication of optical microfibers, which are closely related to ultrafast fiber lasers, we show that characteristics of large portion of evanescent field, tailorable dispersion, high optical nonlinearity, very low optical loss and full compatibility with conventional fibers are greatly beneficial to novel ultrafast fiber lasers. We then highlight recent works on ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers in terms of fast saturable absorbers made from optical microfiber-supported nanomaterials, dispersion management and high optical nonlinearity, as well as some other novel ultrafast fiber lasers. Finally, we briefly discuss future opportunities for optical microfiber-based ultrafast fiber lasers, such as high-order dispersion management, nonlinearity management and applications for sensing and measurement.

Abstract:Graphene is at the center of a significant research effort. Near-ballistic transport at room temperature and high mobility make it a potential material for nanoelectronics. Its electronic and mechanical properties are also ideal for micro- and nanomechanical systems, thin-film transistors, and transparent and conductive composites and electrodes. Here we exploit the optoelectronic properties of graphene to realize an ultrafast laser. A graphene-polymer composite is fabricated using wet-chemistry techniques. Pauli blocking following intense illumination results in saturable absorption, independent of wavelength. This is used to passively mode-lock an erbium-doped fiber laser working at 1559 nm, with a 5.24 nm spectral bandwidth and approximately 460 fs pulse duration, paving the way to graphene-based photonics.
An All-Optical Modulator Based on a Stereo Graphene–microfiber Structure

Abstract:An in-line, all-optical fiber modulator based on a stereo graphene–microfiber structure (GMF) utilizing the lab-on-rod technique was demonstrated in this study. Owing to its unique spring-like geometry, an ultra-long GMF interaction can be achieved, and a modulation depth of ∼7.5 dB (∼2.5 dB) and a modulation efficiency of ∼0.2 dB mW−1 (∼0.07 dB mW−1) were demonstrated for two polarization states. The modulation depth and modulation efficiency are more than one order of magnitude larger than those of other graphene–microfiber hybrid all-optical modulators, although at the cost of a higher insertion loss. By further optimizing the transferring and cleaning process, the upper limit of the modulation depth is mainly determined by the loss from the intrinsic absorption, which depends on the light–graphene interaction. Then, the modulator can quickly switch between the on-state and the off-state with a theoretically maximized modulation depth of tens of decibels. This modulator is compatible with the current fiber-optic communication systems and may be applied in the near future to meet the impending need for ultrafast optical signal processing. A polarization-sensitive all-optical fiber modulator based on a graphene–microfiber structure has been demonstrated by researchers in China. All-optical modulators with high modulation speeds, sufficient modulation depth and wide optical bandwidth are needed to realize ultrafast optical signal processing. Now, Fei Xu and co-workers at Nanjing University have fabricated an all-optical fiber modulator whose modulation depth and efficiency are more than ten times greater than previous all-optical modulators based on graphene and microfibers. These properties originate from its very long interaction length resulting from its spring-like geometry. The researchers consider that even better performance can be achieved by using higher quality graphene and improving the transfer and wrapping of the graphene in the fabrication process. Since the modulator is compatible with existing fiber-optic communication systems, it may find rapid application for ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:The modulation of optical harmonic generation in two-dimensional (2D) materials is of paramount importance in nanophotonic and nano-optoelectronic devices for their applications in optical switching and communication. However, an effective route with ultrafast modulation speed, ultrahigh modulation depth, and broad operation wavelength range is awaiting a full exploration. Here, we report that an optical pump can dynamically modulate the third harmonic generation (THG) of a graphene monolayer with a relative modulation depth above 90% at a time scale of 2.5 ps for a broad frequency ranging from near-infrared to ultraviolet. Our observation, together with the real-time, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations, reveals that this modulation process stems from nonlinear dynamics of the photoexcited carriers in graphene. Abstract:Graphene pasted on the surface of a nanostructure, e.g., microfiber, enables such graphene-based devices to have excellent photonic and electronic properties. In this paper, an all-optical modulator based on a polymer-supported bilayer graphene film half-wrapped on the surface of the microfiber has been theoretically presented and discussed to make the best use of its ultrawide bandwidth. According to the theoretical analyses on the graphene-microfiber modulator, 100 Gbit/s 8 channel synchronous modulation has been realized with similar to 14.88 and similar to 14.80 dB modulation depth, respectively, for two polarized modes. The channel wavelength of such modulator covers C, L, and U bands. To ensure the extinction ratio of 16 channel synchronous modulation to be larger than 5 dB, the bilayer graphene-microfiber interaction length of the modular should be greater than 93.06 mu m and the diameter of the microfiber be around 1.8 mu m. Under this condition, it also has a tolerance on signal deterioration, as it could effectively decrease the noise of "0" signal. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:All-optical devices, which are utilized to process optical signals without electro-optical conversion, play an essential role in the next generation ultrafast, ultralow power-consumption optical information processing systems. To satisfy the performance requirement, nonlinear optical materials that are associated with fast response, high nonlinearity, broad wavelength operation, low optical loss, low fabrication cost, and integration compatibility with optical components are required. Graphene is a promising candidate, particularly considering its electrically or optically tunable optical properties, ultrafast large nonlinearity, and high integration compatibility with various nanostructures. Thus far, three all-optical modulation systems utilize graphene, namely free-space modulators, fiber-based modulators, and on-chip modulators. This paper aims to provide a broad view of state-of-the-art researches on the graphene-based all-optical modulation systems. The performances of different devices are reviewed and compared to present a comprehensive analysis and perspective of graphene-based all-optical modulation devices.

Abstract:Optical modulator is the key components in the optical communication, yet the low modulation efficiency limits its development. A high efficiency, ultra-compact optical modulator is proposed which the electro-refraction effect has been significantly enhanced. The different kinds of graphene schemes are compared and discussed. A graphene embedded Mach-Zender modulator has been theoretically demonstrated with the advantage of ultra-compact footprint (4×30 μm2), high modulation efficiency (20 V·μm), fast modulation speed and large extinction ratio (35dB). Our results may promote various on-chip active components, boosting the utilization of graphene in optical applications.

Abstract:An all-fiber structured electro-absorption (EA) modulator based on graphene is proposed. The graphene is directly attached to the core of the fiber to ensure the coupling efficiency. Mode analysis is used to reveal the light modulation mechanism under the anisotropic graphene modeling, which is merely conducted in previous studies. Compared with conventional semiconductor EA modulators, it exhibits an excellent performance with the advantages such as small footprint (50.2 μm), small voltage swing (0.2 V), and broad operation bandwidth. In addition, the proposed modulator features simple structure, low optical propagation and coupling loss, and good integrated compatibility as the fiber modulator. All these edges prospect the great potentiality in future high-speed optic fiber communications, optical signal processing, and all-fiber systems.
