Abstract:We propose a graphene-based modulator integrated into currently used communication fibers. The graphene is directly built into the core of the fiber to ensure the coupling efficiency. The fiber is deliberately side-polished to enhance the light-graphene interaction. The two-dimensional model analysis method and three-dimensional finite difference time domain method are used to rigorously disclose the light modulation mechanism under the anisotropic graphene modeling, which is merely conducted in previous studies. Based on such a structure, a phase modulator with an arm length of 127 μm is numerically demonstrated with enhanced modulation efficiency. A quasi-linear relation between the phase change and chemical potential of graphene is found theoretically for the first time, providing a large linear dynamic range to control the phase of optical modulation.

Abstract:Active modulation of light with large optical bandwidths (∼100 nm [1]) is required in photonic devices, such as modulators for fiber communications [1] and saturable absorbers for ultrafast pulse generation [2,3]. Present modulators use expensive materials, (e.g. LiNbO 3 [4], III-V semiconductors [5], and Ge on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) [6]), and are limited by narrowband operation (∼20 nm for quantum-confined Stark effect devices [7], or <0.1 nm for resonators [8]), or high loss (∼80% in Si Mach-Zehnder modulators [9]). Single layer graphene (SLG) can be transferred and integrated on a variety of waveguide systems (e.g. a-Si, Si 3 N 4 ) while offering a full-band operation [10]. In all-fiber platforms, including ultrafast lasers [2,3], high coupling losses (∼60% from fiber to SOI waveguide [6]) are driving development of fiber-based modulators. Ref. 3 reported an electrically controllable all-fiber optical modulator with a SLG transistor on a side-polished fiber. However, its gating speed was limited to∼300 Hz [11] due to the low mobility of the ionic liquid used for gating. Here, we report a graphene-microfiber modulator by integrating a microfiber onto a graphene (SLG plated) capacitor (GC). By varying the microfiber size and length we control the light interaction with the biased SLG plates. This can be used for active control of ultrafast laser working in continuous wave, Q-switching and mode-locking operations.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultrafast optical modulation using a single 1-μm-diameter graphene-decorated microfiber, which is fabricated with a convenient and controllable evanescent-field-induced deposition method. Benefitting from the significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction of the subwavelength transvers dimension of the microfiber and accumulation of the saturable absorption of the piled graphene flakes, the microfiber shows nonlinear saturable absorption with a peak power threshold down to 1.75 W (60 MW/cm<sup>2</sup>), with a measured response time of about 3.5 ps.

Abstract:Graphene is an optical material of unusual characteristics because of its linearly dispersive conduction and valence bands and the strong interband transitions. It allows broadband light-matter interactions with ultrafast responses and can be readily pasted to surfaces of functional structures for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Recently, graphene-based optical modulators have been demonstrated with electrical tuning of the Fermi level of graphene. Their operation bandwidth, however, was limited to about 1 GHz by the response of the driving electrical circuit. Clearly, this can be improved by an all-optical approach. Here, we show that a graphene-clad microfiber all-optical modulator can achieve a modulation depth of 38% and a response time of ∼ 2.2 ps, limited only by the intrinsic carrier relaxation time of graphene. This modulator is compatible with current high-speed fiber-optic communication networks and may open the door to meet future demand of ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:Optical modulator is the key components in the optical communication, yet the low modulation efficiency limits its development. A high efficiency, ultra-compact optical modulator is proposed which the electro-refraction effect has been significantly enhanced. The different kinds of graphene schemes are compared and discussed. A graphene embedded Mach-Zender modulator has been theoretically demonstrated with the advantage of ultra-compact footprint (4×30 μm2), high modulation efficiency (20 V·μm), fast modulation speed and large extinction ratio (35dB). Our results may promote various on-chip active components, boosting the utilization of graphene in optical applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate that by inserting bi-layer graphene inside silicon waveguide, the modulation ability of the overall waveguide can be greatly enhanced. A Mach-Zehnder modulator based on this structure is proposed and the calculated results show the modulator exhibits an excellent performance in terms of small footprint (35 μm2) and high extinction ration (31 dB). Besides, it requires low applied voltage and can be compatible with CMOS technology.

Abstract:A compact modulator with high bandwidth and extinction ratio is proposed to achieve light intensity modulation by adjusting the phase of the light transmitted in the fiber. The better modulation effect is achieved by placing two-lamellae of graphene embedded in Al 2 O 3 and PVB on a side-polished microfiber of MZM. Finite element software is used to analyze the modulation effect, the function of the chemical potential of graphene and the effective refractive of modulator is established. Extinction ratios of port 1 and port 2 can reach 11.54 dB and 11.88 dB in 92 μ m by substituting the function into simulation. While achieving a more compact modulation structure, the insert loss is also controlled below 0.0193 dB/ μ m . For the first time, the contact width between bilayer graphene and the electrode is increased by placing the electrode at the head and end of the modulator, which leads to 132.427 GHz modulation bandwidth. And the modulator does not require the excess support structure necessarily benefit from the placement of the electrode. The proposed phase-shift light intensity modulator has high extinction ratio and large bandwidth, which leads to great transmission capacity and modulate speed.

Abstract:An in-line, all-optical fiber modulator based on a stereo graphene–microfiber structure (GMF) utilizing the lab-on-rod technique was demonstrated in this study. Owing to its unique spring-like geometry, an ultra-long GMF interaction can be achieved, and a modulation depth of ∼7.5 dB (∼2.5 dB) and a modulation efficiency of ∼0.2 dB mW−1 (∼0.07 dB mW−1) were demonstrated for two polarization states. The modulation depth and modulation efficiency are more than one order of magnitude larger than those of other graphene–microfiber hybrid all-optical modulators, although at the cost of a higher insertion loss. By further optimizing the transferring and cleaning process, the upper limit of the modulation depth is mainly determined by the loss from the intrinsic absorption, which depends on the light–graphene interaction. Then, the modulator can quickly switch between the on-state and the off-state with a theoretically maximized modulation depth of tens of decibels. This modulator is compatible with the current fiber-optic communication systems and may be applied in the near future to meet the impending need for ultrafast optical signal processing. A polarization-sensitive all-optical fiber modulator based on a graphene–microfiber structure has been demonstrated by researchers in China. All-optical modulators with high modulation speeds, sufficient modulation depth and wide optical bandwidth are needed to realize ultrafast optical signal processing. Now, Fei Xu and co-workers at Nanjing University have fabricated an all-optical fiber modulator whose modulation depth and efficiency are more than ten times greater than previous all-optical modulators based on graphene and microfibers. These properties originate from its very long interaction length resulting from its spring-like geometry. The researchers consider that even better performance can be achieved by using higher quality graphene and improving the transfer and wrapping of the graphene in the fabrication process. Since the modulator is compatible with existing fiber-optic communication systems, it may find rapid application for ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:By embedding graphene sheet in the silicon waveguide, the overall effective mode index displays unexpected symmetry and the electrorefraction effect has been significantly enhanced near the epsilon-near-zero point. An eight-layer graphene embedded Mach-Zehnder Modulator has been theoretically demonstrated with the advantage of ultracompact footprint (4 × 2 μm2), high modulation efficiency (1.316 V·μm), ultrafast modulation speed, and large extinction ratio. Our results may promote various on-chip active components, boosting the utilization of graphene in optical applications.
Theoretical Investigation of a Broadband All-Optical Graphene-Microfiber Modulator

Abstract:Graphene pasted on the surface of a nanostructure, e.g., microfiber, enables such graphene-based devices to have excellent photonic and electronic properties. In this paper, an all-optical modulator based on a polymer-supported bilayer graphene film half-wrapped on the surface of the microfiber has been theoretically presented and discussed to make the best use of its ultrawide bandwidth. According to the theoretical analyses on the graphene-microfiber modulator, 100 Gbit/s 8 channel synchronous modulation has been realized with similar to 14.88 and similar to 14.80 dB modulation depth, respectively, for two polarized modes. The channel wavelength of such modulator covers C, L, and U bands. To ensure the extinction ratio of 16 channel synchronous modulation to be larger than 5 dB, the bilayer graphene-microfiber interaction length of the modular should be greater than 93.06 mu m and the diameter of the microfiber be around 1.8 mu m. Under this condition, it also has a tolerance on signal deterioration, as it could effectively decrease the noise of "0" signal. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A fiber‐end‐face‐integrated electrically tunable optical modulator based on graphene field‐effect transistor and the fabrication technique are proposed and demonstrated. The all‐fiber device features a scheme of compactness and high integration when applied to fiber optical system, as well as a low insertion loss since spatial coupling of light is avoided. A reflecting structure is used and the electro‐optic modulator shows vivid modulation when gate voltage gets tuned, with maximum optical reflectance modulation depth over 1% in demonstration. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first time to build an all‐solid gate‐control modulator directly on fiber facet. The fabrication methods introduce workflows of silicon‐on‐insulator processing into the optical fiber end‐face micromachining domain which can be applied to more comprehensive configurations, broadening the path of fiber‐end‐face integrated device.

Abstract:Graphene has shown promising perspectives in optical active components due to the large active-control of its permittivity-variation. This paper systematically reviews the recent developments of graphene-based optical modulators, including material property, single-layer , multi-layer , few-layer graphene-based modulators and corresponding figure-of-merits.The results showed graphene is an excellent material for enhancing silicons weak modulation capability after it is integrated into the silicon platform, showing significant influence on optical interconnects in future integrated optoelectronic circuits.
Enhancing Device Efficiency Using a Reconfigurable Terahertz Wavefront Modulator Based on Fermi Level of Graphene

Abstract:This study investigates a Fermi-level-reconfigurable terahertz wavefront modulator composed of a hybrid material comprising graphene, silver metal, and silicon dioxide. Through theoretical simulation, analysis, and experimental investigations, it is found that graphene plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of the modulator. Specifically, the presence of graphene increases the limiting factor of the modulator by 0.281, reduces the normalized modal field area by 0.15, decreases the transmission loss, and lowers the gain threshold by 30097 cm−1, thereby improving the efficiency, reliability, and stability of the device. The silicon dioxide and silver metal in the structure act as the primary reflective materials, achieving the effect of a metallic lens and validating the modulator's capability for efficient defocusing. Further investigations reveal that the carrier concentration of graphene can be easily controlled, allowing for manipulation of its physical properties through Fermi-level modulation. When incident light passes through the graphene array, it induces phase variations, altering the transmission path of light and thereby affecting the position of the defocused focal point, enabling dynamic adjustability. Under low Fermi-level control, the modulator achieves a 2πphase adjustment range with an average reflectivity of 75%. Thus, this provides potential for practical applications of more dynamic and tunable microdevices, particularly in the field of laser cutting technology and etching processes.

Abstract:A graphene-based photonics chipGraphene, the single-atom-thick form of carbon, holds promise for many applications, notably in electronics where it can complement or be integrated with silicon-based devices. Intense efforts have been devoted to develop a key enabling device, a broadband, fast optical modulator with a small device footprint. Now Liu et al. demonstrate an exciting new possibility for graphene in the area of on-chip optical communication: a graphene-based optical modulator integrated with a silicon chip. This new device relies on the electrical tuning of the Fermi level of the graphene sheet, and achieves modulation of guided light at frequencies over 1 gigahertz, together with a broad operating spectrum. At just 25 square micrometres in area, it is one of the smallest of its type.

Highly Efficient Graphene-Based Optical Modulator with Edge Plasmonic Effect

Abstract:We report a highly efficient graphene-based modulator by using an edge plasmonic effect in this paper. The modulation efficiency of the proposed modulator can be as large as 1.58 dB/μm, which is several times larger than that of previous reported modulators. By enhancing the gap plasmon mode and the edge plasmonic effect in a well-designed diagonal waveguide, a wedge-to-wedge SPP mode is strongly confined in both horizontal and vertical directions in terms of a small mode area (Aef /A0 <; 1/1000), which significantly improves the light-graphene interaction. A large modulation efficiency of 4.05 dB/μm has been obtained after geometry optimization, which is the best values reported in our knowledge. The physical reason for the improvement is explored. We find the sharpness of the waveguide edges has strong impact on the field enhancement and modulation efficiency. Geometry optimization is made to further investigate the enhancement mechanisms and modulation capacities. Our results may promote the development of active nanophotonic devices incorporating two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:We systematically investigated graphene-based slot and multi-slot waveguides. A tri-slot waveguide which significantly enhances the light-graphene interaction was experimentally demonstrated with low insertion loss. By integrating a dual-layer graphene h-BN heterostructure on the tri-slot waveguide, a high efficiency modulator is designed, which combines the advantages of high modulation efficiency (0.376 dB/μm), low insertion loss (0.01 dB/μm), large modulation bandwidth (∼0.13 THz) and low power consumption (∼0.128 pJ/bit). Our work may promote the development of future high efficient graphene-based optical devices.
