Abstract:A novel active fiber grating sensor system based on injection-locking and Pound-Drever-Hall techniques is presented. In demonstrational experiments, epsilon-level strain resolution is achieved with a very low probe power down to -70 dBm, which is at least 50 dB lower compared with the classical PoundDrever- Hall technique. Besides, the measurement range of the sensor can be adjusted over a large scale up to 17 dB by changing the injection ratio. With the ultrahigh resolution, ultralow probe power, and adjustable measurement range, the proposed sensor has great potential in high-resolution and large-scale sensor networks.

Abstract:In this paper we report the realization of a fiber optic static strain sensor with ultra-high resolution and large dynamic range for the applications of geophysical research. The sensor consists of a pair of fiber Bragg grating based Fabry-Perot interferometers for strain sensing and reference, respectively. Pound-Drever-Hall technique is employed to interrogate the sensor heads, and a cross-correlation algorithm is used to figure out the strain information with high precision. Static strain resolution down to 4.5 nε was demonstrated. The dynamic range can be extended up to hundreds of με, and the measuring period is a few tens of seconds.

Abstract:We present a newly developed high performance fiber optics sensor for quasi-static strain measurement. The sensor consists of a piece of π-phase shifted FBG for static strain sensing, and fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer for reference, interrogated by an improved sideband interrogation method with real-time feedback loops. Strain resolution of 0.12 nano-strain was achieved with sampling rate up to 1 kS/s in laboratory experiments. Compared with previous sensor systems, the proposed method shows great improvement in the sensing rate as well as the resolution.

Abstract:We present an ultrahigh resolution optical fiber strain sensor with a broad frequency range from quasi-static to several hundred hertz. The sensor consists of a pi-phase shifted fiber Bragg grating for strain sensing and a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as reference. The laser carrier and sideband are locked to the reference and sensing elements, respectively, via two individual feedback loops, in which the Pound-Drever-Hall technique is employed to generate the error signals. The sampling rate is up to 500 samples/s in the demonstrational experiments, only limited by the updating rate of the frequency counter. The strain resolution exhibits a 1/f characteristic in the bandwidth of 0.01-250 Hz, and is better than 0.01 ne at 10 Hz with a dynamic range up to 149 dB. Compared with the traditional static strain sensors, the proposed sensor shows a great improvement in both resolution and sensing bandwidth, and can be a powerful tool for geophysical applications. Abstract:A multilongitudinal mode fiber laser sensor formed by two fiber Bragg gratings and a piece of erbium-doped fiber is first proposed and validated experimentally. When the strain is applied on the sensor, the laser cavity is stretched, which leads to a change of round-trip frequency. Thus the strain can be obtained by measuring the beat frequency of the resonant cavity. The proposed sensor is found to be characterized with simplicity, easy setup, high resolution, low-cost demodulation, and good stability. Experimental results show that the sensor has a sensitivity of -1.1 KHz/microepsilon and the root-mean-square deviation of 3.6 microepsilon.

Abstract:We propose a novel sideband interrogation technique with multiplex radio frequency intensity and phase modulation to measure the resonance frequency difference between two optical resonators. Based on this new technique, an ultrahighly sensitive fiber-optic static strain sensor system consisting of a pair of identical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers is built by incorporating a cross-correlation data processing algorithm. Abstract:An in-fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensing system with a high signal to noise ratio (SNR) of ～65 dB is proposed for the dynamic strain measurement,which is based on a tunable fiber ring laser configuration. The sensing signals of the FBGs are demodulated by using an imbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) that combines with a tunable filter.Experimental results show that an excellent electrical SNR of 52dB is achieved for a FBG sensor located at 2km on the fiber link with a low pump laser power of only 100 mW,which leads to a strain resolution of 6.7×10-12/Hz1/2.

Abstract:We present a multiplexed quasi-static strain sensor with sub-nano resolution using fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers (FFPIs). The FFPIs are connected in ladder structure with cascaded couplers and delay fibers for multiplexing, and their transient response excited by laser pulses are acquired to distinguish the resonant frequencies of each FFPI. An electro-optical system based on acousto-optic modulator is employed to interrogate the sensor array. In the demonstrational experiment, 3-channel strain measurement with resolutions better than 0.2 n epsilon/Hz(1/2) in frequency band from 0.1 Hz to 100 Hz is realized.

Abstract:Aiming at realizing a static strain sensor of nano-strain resolution, which is required in most geophysical applications, this paper presents a thorough analysis on the strain resolution of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) static strain sensor interrogated with a narrow linewidth tunable laser. The main noise sources of the sensor are discussed, and the strain resolution is deduced with a cross-correlation algorithm. The theoretical prediction agrees well with our experimental result, and the analysis is further validated by numerical simulations. Based on the analysis, the paper provides the guidelines for optimizing this type of sensor to realize ultra-high resolution. It is shown that with properly designed FBGs and interrogation systems, nano static strain resolution can be realized, as we recently demonstrated in experiment.

Abstract:A 1.5 μm ultralow‐noise single‐frequency fiber laser (SFFL) is realized based on a delay fiber phase‐locked method and the nonlinear amplification effect of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Via feedback locking of the phase jitter signal, the phase noise achieves the minimum value of −160 dB rad Hz−1/2 m−1 with a maximum reduction of 50 dB. Meanwhile, SOA reduces the intensity noise by a maximum of 65 dB, making it near the shot‐noise limit for frequencies above 40 kHz. To demonstrate this state‐of‐art SFFL with ultralow‐noise property, a high‐resolution fiber‐optic dynamic strain sensing based on a fiber‐based Michelson interferometer (FMI) is performed. As a result, the strain resolution reaches 26 fε Hz−1/2 in the 30–200 Hz band, which is improved by almost three orders of magnitude than that realized by a free‐running SFFL. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first time to achieve such a high‐resolution fiber‐optic dynamic strain sensor in the low‐frequency range utilizing the FMI system. This high‐resolution fiber‐optic strain sensing has promising applications in geophysics and biophotonics. Moreover, this ultralow‐noise SFFL is competitive for sophisticated applications, such as precise absolute distance measurement, quantum key distribution, and generating squeezed light.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) strain sensing system composed of compound filter of a long period fiber grating (LPFG) and a Sagnac loop is proposed. Polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) in Sagnac loop acts both an interference filter and a strain sensing probe with high sensitivity, low cost, and low loss. LPFG is used to modulate the transmission wavelength and bandwidth of EDFL through adjusting its bending curvature. Flexible laser output with single wavelength and dual-wavelength tunable wavelength band of 10 nm is achieved in EDFL. The measurement sensitivity of strain reaches 8.33 pm/με, while the 3 dB linewidth is less than 2 nm and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exceed 36 dB. This sensor has a high resolution (R) of 0.11 nm and a high quality factor (Q) of 38.13. The experimental results suggest that the system is suitable for precise strain measurement and has significant potential in fields like biomedicine, environmental monitoring, health monitoring, and aerospace.

Abstract:A single-shot distributed dynamic strain sensor is proposed with high spatial resolution and broad detection bandwidth. Linear frequency modulated pulse is employed as the probe pulse, which not only solves the trade-off between spatial resolution and sensing distance, but also avoids the time-consuming stepped frequency tuning process. The matrix of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) at multiple frequencies over the fiber is obtained using the first probe pulse. The strain variation is retrieved from the corresponding frequency shift of the following probe pulses using RBS signature matching. In the demonstrational experiment, distributed vibration measurement with 0.9 m spatial resolution, 224 pε/√ Hz strain resolution, 5 kHz response bandwidth and 25.7 dB signal-to-noise radio is realized over 10-km sensing fiber.
An Ultra-High-Resolution Fbg Static-Strain Sensor for Geophysics Applications

Abstract:We report an ultra-high-resolution static-strain measurement with a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), one for strain sensing and the other for compensating the error due to temperature disturbance and source drift. The difference between the two FBGs' Bragg wavelengths is evaluated by utilizing a cross-correlation algorithm. The mechanism of noise suppression by the cross-correlation algorithm is quantitatively analyzed and the factor that determines the ability of noise suppression of this algorithm is revealed. The temperature dependence is further subtracted by using a vector operation. When no strain is applied, an ultra-high wavelength resolution corresponding to 2.6 n epsilon was obtained, which gives the ultimate performance of the measurement system. With a variable strain applied with a piezo-stage, a resolution of 17.6 n epsilon was demonstrated. This is the first demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, that a real-static strain down to 10 n epsilon is measured, providing a powerful technique for the measurement in geophysics application.

Abstract:In the area of fiber-optic sensors (FOSs), the past decade witnessed great efforts to challenge the thermal-noise-level sensing resolution for passive FOS. Several attempts were reported claiming the arrival of thermal-noise-level resolution, while the realization of thermal-noise-level resolution for passive FOSs is still controversial and challenging. In this paper, an ultrahigh-resolution FOS system is presented with a sensing resolution better than existing high-resolution passive FOSs. A fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as the sensing element is interrogated with an ultra-stable probe laser by using the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. Both strain and temperature measurements are carried out to validate the performance of the sensor. The measured noise floor agrees with the theoretical thermal noise level very well.

Abstract:We present a high-resolution strain and temperature sensor by using a polarimetric distributed Bragg reflector fiber laser. The mean wavelength and polarization beat frequency of the laser output are utilized to determine the strain and temperature of the sensor. Experimental results show that the sensor has a capability of sensing strain and temperature simultaneously, with root mean square deviations of 9.3 mu epsiv and 0.05degC, respectively.

Abstract:An in-fiber Bragg grating (FBG) dynamic strain sensing system based on a fiber ring laser configuration and the Eigenvector spectrum analysis method, is proposed and demonstrated. An ultrahigh dynamic strain resolution of 5x10-5 nε /Hz1/2 is achieved due to both the use of the supper white-noise suppression ability of the advanced spectrum analysis method and the high optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (~65dB) of the sensing signal generated by the fiber ring laser scheme. This is the highest dynamic strain resolution achieved so far for a single FBG sensor at frequency of <100Hz, to the best of our knowledge.
