Abstract:The corrosion behaviour of different planes of a selective laser-melted (SLM) equimolar CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA) was investigated and compared with its counterpart cast alloy in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The microstructures of the SLM products were characterised, and electrochemical corrosion measurements, corrosion surface morphology observations, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses were performed. Compared with the cast MEA, the SLM MEA has an inferior corrosion resistance for its more metallurgical defects and smaller grain size. In the SLM MEA samples, The XY-plane of the SLM MEA has a poorer corrosion resistance than the XZ-plane, which is due to more metallurgical defects and lack of fusion pores on the XY-plane and its higher grain boundary density.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the corrosion performance of equimolar CrCoNi medium - entropy alloy (MEA) prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and compare it with the CrCoNi alloy prepared by the traditional casting process. Specifically, the research focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Material microstructure**: Characterize the microstructures of SLM and cast CrCoNi alloys, including grain size, metallurgical defects, etc., by means of X - ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy - dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron back - scatter diffraction (EBSD). 2. **Electrochemical corrosion behavior**: Evaluate the corrosion performance of different samples through open - circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curve tests. These tests can provide information on key parameters such as corrosion rate, corrosion current density, and passivation film stability. 3. **Corrosion surface morphology**: Observe the surface morphology after corrosion using SEM, analyze the distribution and morphology of corrosion products, and the formation mechanism of corrosion pits. 4. **Passive film characteristics**: Study the chemical composition and structural characteristics of the passive film formed during the corrosion process through X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The main conclusions of the paper are: - Due to more metallurgical defects and smaller grain size, the corrosion performance of CrCoNi alloy prepared by SLM is not as good as that of the cast CrCoNi alloy. - In SLM samples, the corrosion performance in the XY plane is worse than that in the XZ plane, which is mainly attributed to more metallurgical defects and higher grain boundary density on the XY plane. - The corrosion products formed during the corrosion process will accumulate around the corrosion pits, forming flocculent or reticular deposits, further affecting the corrosion performance of the material. Through these studies, the paper reveals the influence of the SLM process on the corrosion performance of CrCoNi alloy and provides a theoretical basis for optimizing SLM process parameters.
