Abstract:The corrosion behavior of the Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 high-entropy alloy (HEA) manufactured via laser melting deposition (LMD) was investigated using open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The microstructure and morphology of LMD samples before and after the electrochemical tests were compared using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction techniques. After the corrosion tests, a striped morphology was observed on the surface of the LMD HEA, which is mainly caused by the interval distribution of high-density and low-density grain-boundary regions. The corrosion performances varied with different planes of the LMD HEA sample, which is mainly controlled by the grain size at each plane. Local corrosion in this HEA is concentrated at the melt pool boundary, which may be due to the abundant metallurgical defects and stress concentration at this location.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly explores the corrosion behavior of non-equiatomic FeMnCoCr high-entropy alloy (HEA) prepared by laser melting deposition (LMD) technology in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. ### Research Background and Objectives - **Research Background**: High-entropy alloys have attracted widespread attention due to their unique properties, especially their good mechanical performance and thermal stability. In recent years, a non-equiatomic dual-phase Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 HEA has been proposed, showing high strength and good plasticity. However, the corrosion performance of this material has not been fully studied. - **Research Objectives**: This study aims to prepare Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 HEA samples using LMD technology and to explore the corrosion performance on different planes. Additionally, the relationship between corrosion behavior and microstructure is analyzed. ### Main Findings - **Microstructure**: The samples prepared by LMD technology have a complex microstructure, including dendritic and cellular subgrain distributions. These microstructural features are related to the cooling rate during the deposition process. - **Corrosion Behavior**: - Striated corrosion morphology was observed on the sample surface, mainly due to the spaced distribution of high-density and low-density grain boundary regions. - The corrosion performance varies with different sample planes, primarily controlled by the grain size of each plane. - Localized corrosion is concentrated at the melt pool boundaries, possibly due to the presence of abundant metallurgical defects and stress concentration in these areas. ### Experimental Methods - **Sample Preparation**: Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 HEA powder was prepared using LMD technology, with powder particle sizes ranging from 75 to 150 microns. A 2000 W fiber laser was used for processing. - **Electrochemical Testing**: Open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were conducted to evaluate the corrosion performance of the samples. ### Conclusion - Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 HEA samples exhibit different corrosion behaviors in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution, which are closely related to the microstructure of the sample planes (such as grain size and grain boundary density). - This study provides important information for understanding the corrosion mechanisms of HEAs prepared by LMD technology in specific corrosive environments, which is significant for designing high-performance materials.
