Abstract:We demonstrate the capability of a molecular tracer based laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer for measuring fluid velocity profile in microfluidics. To validate the feasibility and accuracy of this measurement system, the velocity profiles of the cylindrical and rectangular microchannels are measured, respectively. We compare our experimental results with theoretical prediction. The theoretical prediction shows a good consistency with practical measurement results. The spatial resolutions are analyzed and validated. Finally, the error source of the presented system is analyzed, which makes it possible to compensate some error quantitatively and guides the application of this system.

Abstract:We report a novel method for multichannel transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. The fiber transfer delay measurement is converted into frequency measurement. As a key technique, a simple ambiguity resolving process based on phase discrimination and frequency locking is used to overcome the contradiction between measurement accuracy and system complexity. A real-time calibration method is employed to detect and eliminate system delay fluctuation. It achieves two-channel fiber transmission delay measurement with a high accuracy of 0.1 picosecond and dynamic range over tens of kilometers.

Abstract:A serial photonic channelized radio frequency (RF) measurement scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This scheme can be used for instantaneous multiple-frequency measurement and capturing key parameters of linear frequency modulation signals. Based on high-speed wavelength scanning, this photonic RF channelizer works serially in time domain, and each wavelength labels a certain RF channel. With only one low-bandwidth photodetector (PD), we can implement multiple channel RF frequency measurements, which have a much simpler structure compared with parallel channelized schemes using broadband filter-bank and multiple PDs.

Abstract:Traditional methods for measuring the speed of light in dispersive media have been based on the detection of interference between light waves emitted from the same source. In the present study the elapsed times for single photons to move from a laser to a photomultiplier tube are measured electronically. Time-correlated single photon counting detection produces a characteristic instrument response which has the same shape independent of both the path length the light travels and the nature of the transparent media through which it passes. This allows for an accurate calibration of the chronograph by observing shifts in the location of the instrument response for different distances traveled by the light. Measurement of the corresponding shift which occurs when light moves the same distance through air and water then enables an accurate determination of the ratio of the photon velocities in these two media. Three different wavelengths of light have been used. In two cases good agreement is found between the present measured light speeds and those which can be inferred from existing refractive index measurements in water. The shortest wavelength studied is too far in the uv to obtain a reliable estimate on the same basis, and so the ng value (1.463) measured in the present work awaits independent confirmation. A theoretical discussion of the present results is undertaken with reference to Newton's original corpuscular theory of light. It is argued that his failure to predict that light travels more slowly in water than in air arose from the inadequacy of his mechanical theory rather than his assumptions about the elementary composition of light.

Channelized analog microwave short-time Fourier transform in the optical domain with improved measurement performance

Abstract:In this article, analog microwave short-time Fourier transform (STFT) with improved measurement performance is implemented in the optical domain by employing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and channelization. By jointly using three optical frequency combs and filter- and SBS-based frequency-to-time mapping (FTTM), the time-frequency information of the signal under test (SUT) in different frequency intervals is measured in different channels. Then, by using the channel label introduced through subcarriers after photodetection, the obtained low-speed electrical pulses in different channels mixed in the time domain are distinguished and the time-frequency information of the SUT in different channels is respectively obtained and spliced to implement the STFT. For the first time, channelization measurement technology is introduced in the STFT system based on frequency sweeping and FTTM, greatly reducing the frequency-sweep range of the required frequency-sweep signal to the analysis bandwidth divided by the number of channels. In addition, channelization can also be used to improve the time and frequency resolution of the STFT system. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. 12-GHz and 10-GHz analysis bandwidth is implemented by using a 4-GHz frequency-sweep signal and 3 channels and a 2-GHz frequency-sweep signal and 5 channels. Measurement performance improvement is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Multi-parameters and multi-region optical fiber measurement is of the utmost importance for structural health monitoring. We propose and demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensing system based on time offset for many separated regions optical fiber measurements, in order to realize the many separated regions simultaneous measurement, the distributed optical fiber sensing system based on time offset with the partials reflector for wide measurement range was carried out. In this study, we discusses that the max number of detecting regions for the distributed optical fiber sensing system. Furthermore, serials of temperature tests is also conducted in two detecting regions laboratory. The experimental results show that the optical fiber sensor based on time offset exhibited good linear performance with 97% linear coefficient, the experiments demonstrated that the output intensity values increase obviously along with the temperature changes and the sensitivity is almost same for the specific optical fiber detecting length in detecting regions. No only point measurement but also multi-region distributed measurement could monitor by the distributed optical fiber sensing system based on time offset effectively.

Abstract:A novel method for velocity measurement is presented. In this scheme, a parallel-linear-polarization dual-frequency laser is incident on the target and senses the target velocity with both the frequencies, which can increase the maximum measurable velocity significantly. The theoretical analysis and verification experiment of the novel method are presented, which show that high-velocity measurement can be achieved with high precision using this method.

Abstract:Optical propagation time in matter could reveal fruitful information, such as the velocity of light and the sample's refractive index. In this paper, we build a simple and robust setup for measuring the optical propagation time in matter for a known distance, the system uses high frequency square signal as the signal carrier, and a lock-in amplifier is employed to obtain the phase difference between the reference square signal and the other one penetrating the sample, in this way the optical time of flight in matter can be obtained by a background subtraction process. Primary experimental result confirms the feasibility of the newly proposed measuring theory, which can be used to measure easily in high-speed the speed of light and the refractive index of optical transparent material, compared with the currently popular measuring technique using oscilloscope, potential advantage of our proposed method employing lock-in amplifier is that high accuracy are promising, and in contrast with the presently most popular method for measuring the sample's refractive index based on the minimum deviation angle, superiority of our suggested method is the easy preparation of the sample, the convenient operability and the fast measuring speed.

Abstract:The passive optical components with very fine structures in wavelength domain are very sensitive to the mechanical vibrations or thermal fluctuations. If the measurement speed is lower than the temperature and mechanical fluctuation, we cannot measure the dynamic characteristics of the optical components. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel method with ultra-fast measurement speed and high-resolution based on optical channel estimation using direct-detected orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DD-OFDM) signal, which can be used to measure the dynamic characteristics and fine structure of the passive optical components. In experiment, by using fast Fourier transform (FFT) and a low-cost electro-absorption modulated laser (EML), we can achieve the transfer function characteristics with 3.9 MHz resolution. Compared with the optical channel estimation using coherent OFDM signal reported before, the proposed measurement technique is cost-effective.

Abstract:We present a simple method of making multichannel photon counting measurements of weak lidar signal from large ranges, using commonly available USB-based digital storage oscilloscopes. The single photon pulses from compact photomultiplier tubes are amplified and stretched so that the pulses are large and broad enough to be sampled efficiently by the USB oscilloscopes. A software interface written in Labview is then used to count the number of photon pulses in each of the prescribed time bins to form the histogram of LIDAR signal. This method presents a flexible alternative to the modular multichannel scalers and facilitate the development of sensitive lidar systems.

Abstract:A single-frame complete spatiotemporal characteristics measurement method of ultrafast laser pulses, named Carrier Frequency Division Multiplexing Spectral Interferometry (CFDMSI), is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the idea of frequency division multiplexing, the 3D spatiotemporal field E(x,y,t) of a femtosecond laser pulse can be reconstructed from a single spectral interferogram. The implementation of CFDMSI is quite simple, just fixing a slit array at the entrance of an imaging spectrometer, then injecting the unknown pulse and the reference pulse into the imaging spectrometer at a certain cross angle. By recording and analyzing a single spectral interferogram, the unknown pulse‘s spatiotemporal field in the sampling area of the slit array can be obtained. The principle and implementation of CFDMSI are introduced, and its effectiveness is verified by a demonstration experiment.

Abstract:In order to break through the limitation of Electronic analog-to-digital converter in speed and time-delay precision,a wideband digital frequency measurement method based on optical sub-sampling is proposed. Taking advantage of ultrashort optical pulse from passive mode-locked fiber laser,multi-wavelength optical pulse cluster with controllable time-delay is produced. Traveling through electric-optic modulator,pulse cluster samples the signal and is detected by photodiode array,and then we could calculate the frequency spectrum in electric domain. Combined with Multiple Signal Classification algorithm (MUSIC),the method has advantage of high sampling bandwidth,accurate time-delay and Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) technology. According to theoretical research and numerical simulation result,this method is able to get high-resolution multiple frequency measurement with a bandwidth of 20GHz.

Abstract:High-precision time-interval measurement is a fundamental technique in many advanced applications, including time and distance metrology, particle physics, and ultra-precision machining. However, many of these applications are confined by the imprecise time-interval measurement of electrical signals, restricting the performance of the ultimate system to a few picoseconds, which limits ultra-high-precision applications. Here, we demonstrate an optical means of the time-interval measurement of electrical signals that can successfully achieve femtosecond (fs)-level precision. The setup is established using the optical-frequency-comb (OFC)-based linear optical sampling technique to realize timescale-stretched measurement. We achieve the measurement precision of 82 fs for a single LOS scan measurement and 3.05 fs for the 100-times average with post-processing, which is three orders of magnitude higher than the results of older electrical methods. The high-precision time interval measurement of electrical signals can substantially improve precision measurement technologies.
