Abstract:We demonstrate a sub-ps resolution clock-offset measurement based on linear optical sampling technique via a 114 km fiber link by transferring a dual optical frequency comb. The time deviation between two distance clocks is 110 fs at 1 s and 22 fs at 100 s averaging, and the standard deviation of the measured clock offset is 237 fs. This sub-ps level of clock offset measurement should benefit many time synchronization applications via long fiber links.

Abstract:Fiber-delay measurement is one of the key fundamental technologies in numerous fields. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-precision and concise optical time delay measurement system based on the technique of linear optical sampling, reaching the precision better than 100 fs under averaging. The use of only two optical frequency combs without locking the carrier-envelope-offset frequency greatly simplifies the structure of the time-delay measurement system. We also experimentally investigate the current limitations on the precision of the system. The timing jitter noises of two sources are mainly non-common mode, and are both restricted to the frequency sources. Our results indicate that the proposed device can measure fiber length fluctuations below 10 $\mu {\rm{m}}$, paving the way for further analyses of the external disturbances on the fiber link.

Abstract:A novel method, to the best of our knowledge, of fiber transfer delay (FTD) measurement based on phase quantization and delay synthesis is proposed and demonstrated. By detecting the differential phase shifts of a set of frequency-multiplied RF signals transmission through the fiber link with and without the FTD under the test, the ${2}\pi $2π phase ambiguity problem can be solved. To avoid the phase quantization error near the digital quantization boundary, a self-check and error-correction method is proposed so as to greatly improve the reliability of measurement. In the experiment, the measurement repeatability around 0.018 ps within a period of 80 s is achieved for a back-to-back fiber link, and a test resolution of 0.03 ps is proved with a motorized tunable delay line. The system is available for measurement of a large FTD range up to 100 µs with no dead zone.

Abstract:We report a novel method for multichannel transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. The fiber transfer delay measurement is converted into frequency measurement. As a key technique, a simple ambiguity resolving process based on phase discrimination and frequency locking is used to overcome the contradiction between measurement accuracy and system complexity. A real-time calibration method is employed to detect and eliminate system delay fluctuation. It achieves two-channel fiber transmission delay measurement with a high accuracy of 0.1 picosecond and dynamic range over tens of kilometers.

Abstract:An approach to measuring time delay with high speed and high precision is proposed based on using complementary frequency-swept light and frequency-shifted dechirping. The complementary frequency-swept light is generated by up-converting a linear frequency-modulated waveform into the optical domain, which sweeps linearly and fast. The frequency-shifted dechirping operation and a phase-noise-elimination algorithm are utilized to suppress the phase noise of the optical source, which enables high-precision time delay measurement without limitation of the coherence time on the measurement range. In the experiment, the bandwidth of the linear frequency-modulated waveform is set to be 4 GHz. The time delay of a spool of single-mode fiber with a length of 1 km is measured by using two different laser sources with linewidths of 1.9 MHz and 27 kHz. The standard deviations of the measured time delay are 0.42 ps and 0.52 ps, respectively, indicating that the optical phase noise has a negligible impact on the measurement results. Allan deviation is used to calculate the relative measurement errors, which are 1×10 -7 and 4×10 -9 within a measurement duration of 30 μs and 4.53 ms, respectively. Besides, the time delay change of an optical tunable delay line with a tuning step of 4 ps is clearly distinguished. Hence, this scheme can achieve ultrafast and high-precision time delay measurement within a large range.

Abstract:Due to its properties of low attenuation, high capacity and reliability, the widespread optical fiber network has become an attractive option for long-distance transmission. The signal transmission delay in fiber, as an essential characteristic, becomes a significant parameter that has broad effects on the performance of optical communications, fiber timing distribution systems, phased array antennas, and some other large-scale scientific or engineering facilities. We report a novel method for signal transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. Based on phase discrimination, dual-frequency locking and measurement, it achieves a very high measurement precision of 0.2 ps with a 0.1 ps resolution, and dynamic range over 50 km. Using a phase shift and frequency locking technique, the measurement ambiguity can be resolved within only a few seconds. It greatly simplifies the measurement procedure and requires much simpler equipment. A good agreement in measurement results with the conventional pulsed method is obtained as well.

Abstract:Multi-parameters and multi-region optical fiber measurement is of the utmost importance for structural health monitoring. We propose and demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensing system based on time offset for many separated regions optical fiber measurements, in order to realize the many separated regions simultaneous measurement, the distributed optical fiber sensing system based on time offset with the partials reflector for wide measurement range was carried out. In this study, we discusses that the max number of detecting regions for the distributed optical fiber sensing system. Furthermore, serials of temperature tests is also conducted in two detecting regions laboratory. The experimental results show that the optical fiber sensor based on time offset exhibited good linear performance with 97% linear coefficient, the experiments demonstrated that the output intensity values increase obviously along with the temperature changes and the sensitivity is almost same for the specific optical fiber detecting length in detecting regions. No only point measurement but also multi-region distributed measurement could monitor by the distributed optical fiber sensing system based on time offset effectively.

Abstract:Precision time synchronization between two remote sites is desired in many applications such as global positioning satellite systems, long-baseline interferometry, coherent radar detection and fundamental physics constant measurements. The recently developed frequency dissemination technologies based on optical fiber link have improved the transfer instability to the level of 10−19/day at remote location. Therefore it is possible to keep clock oscillation at remote locations continuously corrected, or to reproduce a “virtual” clock on the remote location. However the initial alignment and the correction of 1 pps timing signal from time to time are still required, besides the highly stabilized clock frequency transfer between distant locations. Here we demonstrate a time synchronization based on an ultra-stable frequency transfer system via 120-km commercial fiber link by transferring an optical frequency comb. Both the phase noise compensation in frequency dissemination and temporal basis alignment in time synchronization were implemented by a feed-forward digital compensation (FFDC) technique. The fractional frequency instability was measured to be 6.18 × 10−20 at 2000 s. The timing deviation of time synchronization was measured to be 0.6 ps in 1500 s. This technique also can be applied in multi-node fiber network topology.

Abstract:Optical fiber is the cornerstone of the contemporary inter-network and has produced profound and far-reaching effect on modern information society ever since it was invented. The detection of key parameters of optical fiber such as length, refractive index, and chromatic dispersion is of great significance to ensure the quality and security of communication network. Here, a synchronous, fast, and high-precision measurement method for the length and dispersion of optical fibers is proposed, where the time-of-flight measurement and spectral interference are organically combined using an optical frequency comb (OFC) with the assistance of a modulated narrow linewidth single-frequency laser. The length and the dispersion coefficient distribution can be preciously obtained directly and simultaneously by measuring only single-frame interference spectrum. The excellent time–frequency characteristics of the OFC and our unique algorithm enable the realization of extremely high measurement accuracy and resolution: a resolution of @ 500 m and an accuracy of 1.5 cm ( relatively) @ 11 000 m, as well as a dispersion measurement accuracy of 0.5%. The method boasts rapid measurement, ample bandwidth, elimination of scanning, and exceptional precision, making it highly applicable in both optical communication and optical fiber sensing systems.

Abstract:Time transfer over optical fiber is finding numerous applications and attracting extensive research. In this paper, we present a high-precision fiber-optic two-way time transfer network based on the time–frequency domain transform (TFDT) measurement. The time signals of different sites are embedded into the chirp pulse signals, the relative time interval of which is converted to the mutual beat frequency and then measured in frequency domain. Accordingly enhancing the transformation factor can improve the measurement accuracy to enable the two-way fiber-optic time transfer with picosecond-level resolution. The accuracy of the TFDT measurement is experimentally tested under different pulse widths and signal-to-noise ratios. Furthermore, we implement a three-node time transfer network over a 5.9 km fiber loop link by the picosecond-precision two-way time transfer. The time stabilities of both remote sites can reach around 0.36 ps at 10000 s averaging time.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a high-precision fiber-optic time transfer scheme based on bidirectional frequency division multiplexing and cross-correlation processing. Time signals at different stations are encoded as different time varying signals within different frequency passband, respectively. The transferred time varying signals are carried on the same wavelengths and transmitted to each other, which are precisely recovered at the receiving stations. The time differences between the received time varying signals and the one generated according to the local time signals are measured by cross correlation processing. Since the transferred time varying signals are non-overlapping on spectrum, back-scattering noises from fiber links can be effectively suppressed by simply electrical filtering. At the same time, the symmetry of bidirectional transmission can be guaranteed maximally to avoid the time-consuming and laborious link calibration, and support fiber link switching without requiring link re-calibration. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated over 50 km, 100 km, 150 km fiber-links, respectively. The results show that the measured mean clock difference can be less than 3.55 ps over fibers with different lengths, and the stability in terms of time deviation can be less than 34.46 ps at 1 s and 1.26 ps at 1000 s over 150 km fiber-link, respectively.
Inline-Amplification-Free Time Transfer Utilizing Waveform-Resolved Single-Photon Detection

Abstract:High-precision time transfer over a long haul of fiber plays a significant role in many fields. The core method, namely cascading relay nodes for the compensation of signal attenuation and dispersion, is however insufficient to deal with crucial point-to-point transfer scenarios, such as harsh environments with extremely deficient infrastructure and emergency conditions. In long-distance signal transmission without any inline amplifiers, the high loss of the optical fiber link becomes the primary limiting factor, and direct use of traditional photodetectors at the receiving end will bring about a significant drop in the stability of detected signals. Here we propose a waveform-resolved single photon detection technique and experimentally perform tomography on the weak transferred signal with an average photon number of just 0.617 per pulse. By adopting this technique, we achieve the time deviation of 95.68 ps and 192.58 ps at 200 km and 300 km respectively at an averaging time of 1 s, overcoming the technical lower bound induced by traditional photodetectors. This work lays the foundation for through-type time transfer with high precision in those significant inline-amplification-free scenarios.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a fiber-optic time transfer over a 6000 km noncalibrated fiber link using proposed single-fiber bidirectional-transmission unidirectional optical amplifiers (SFBT-UOAs). The proposed SFBT-UOA employs a 2 × 2 optical switch to enable the time-division-multiplexed time signals for both directions to pass through the same UOA in different time slots. The bidirectional delay symmetry is guaranteed to the maximum extent by allowing the time signals to be transmitted back and forth using the same wavelength over a single fiber. Meanwhile, the noises suffered in the systems employing single fiber bidirectional optical amplifiers (SF-BOAs), such as double Rayleigh backscattering, are effectively suppressed. Consequently, high-precision fiber-optic time transfer can be implemented over ultralong distance by adopting the proposed SFBT-UOAs. Moreover, the SFBT-UOA can support the conventional network services via wavelength division multiplexings (WDMs) and, therefore, offers the potential to perform high-precision time transfer over long-haul commercial fiber links. Over 6000 km, the measured time deviations of fiber-optic time transfer in the laboratory are less than 190 ps/s and 61 ps/105 s, respectively. The calculated combined uncertainty is not beyond 70 ps, which agrees well with the experimental verification over the noncalibrated fiber link.

Abstract:Traditional high-precision long-distance time-frequency transmission requires a complex compensation structure and a continuous optical link, which make high-precision transmission difficult. In this study, we use two counter-propagating optical frequency combs to realize high-precision two-way time-frequency transfer over a 20-km fiber link. The transmission distance transmitted in this experiment is also farther greater than the current free-space transmission distances transmitted over free space. The two optical frequency combs are locked to the same radio frequency reference source. The method makes measurements more flexible and reduces interference. To suppress the effect of dispersion, we use an optical filter to narrow the bandwidth of the optical comb. Meanwhile, the bandwidth of the optical filter is chosen to ensure that the optical comb has the best signal-to-noise ratio at a remote site. We measure the timing difference over 24 h between the local site and remote site.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a kind of optical-electrical-optical (OEO) repeater station for the time transfer based on bidirectional time division multiplexing transmission over a single fiber with the same wavelength (BTDM-SFSW). Along the main fiber link, the forward and backward time signals alternatively pass through the same OEO repeater via a 2X2 optical switch (OS). By this means, the optical powers of bidirectional time signals increase. And parts of excess noises, suffered from the main link, are sufficiently blocked owing to the OEO process. Simultaneously, the bidirectional time signals can be decoded and utilized for multi-access time transfer. As a result of the same devices for both directions, the maximum delay symmetry is maintained, and the performance for multi-access time transfer is guaranteed. With the OEO repeater stations, we successfully demonstrate multi-access time transfer in our time transfer testbeds with the main links up to 13,200 km. The time deviations of less than 80 ps/s and 11 ps/10^5 s, respectively, are obtained. Furthermore, the combined standard uncertainties of less than 70 ps are reached, which agree well with the experimental verifications over non-calibrated fiber links.

Abstract:This article achieves a comparison of optical fiber time transfer systems on different optical fibers on the same route over a 166km long onsite fiber optic link. This article provides new ideas and methods for high-precision fiber optic time transfer comparison and indicator verification. When conducting time transfer with different wavelengths on the two telecommunication network fibers, the system adopts a bidirectional time comparison method. It needs to consider factors such as dispersion to further eliminate uncertainty in the fiber optic transmission process, to achieve extremely high precision time synchronization and clock source comparison. This article uses 8 optical fiber time transfer devices, starting from the National Time Service Center in Lintong, on two different optical fibers on the same path, passing through Xi'an and Xianyang to reach Tongchuan City. And the fiber dispersion self-correction scheme is used in the system. The experimental measurement results show that the fluctuation is 24 ps in standard deviation. The peak-to-peak value of fluctuation is 69 ps, and the transfer stability TDEV is 7 ps@ls.
