Abstract:A novel method, to the best of our knowledge, of fiber transfer delay (FTD) measurement based on phase quantization and delay synthesis is proposed and demonstrated. By detecting the differential phase shifts of a set of frequency-multiplied RF signals transmission through the fiber link with and without the FTD under the test, the ${2}\pi $2π phase ambiguity problem can be solved. To avoid the phase quantization error near the digital quantization boundary, a self-check and error-correction method is proposed so as to greatly improve the reliability of measurement. In the experiment, the measurement repeatability around 0.018 ps within a period of 80 s is achieved for a back-to-back fiber link, and a test resolution of 0.03 ps is proved with a motorized tunable delay line. The system is available for measurement of a large FTD range up to 100 µs with no dead zone.

Abstract:Due to its properties of low attenuation, high capacity and reliability, the widespread optical fiber network has become an attractive option for long-distance transmission. The signal transmission delay in fiber, as an essential characteristic, becomes a significant parameter that has broad effects on the performance of optical communications, fiber timing distribution systems, phased array antennas, and some other large-scale scientific or engineering facilities. We report a novel method for signal transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. Based on phase discrimination, dual-frequency locking and measurement, it achieves a very high measurement precision of 0.2 ps with a 0.1 ps resolution, and dynamic range over 50 km. Using a phase shift and frequency locking technique, the measurement ambiguity can be resolved within only a few seconds. It greatly simplifies the measurement procedure and requires much simpler equipment. A good agreement in measurement results with the conventional pulsed method is obtained as well.

Abstract:An accurate self-calibrated fiber transfer delay measurement method is demonstrated. Using the simplified self-calibration configuration, the measurement uncertainty of fiber transfer delay is improved. To demonstrate the accuracy of the method, the measurement results of two systems are compared. It shows that this method achieves a sub-picosecond accuracy. Besides, the chromatic dispersion of fiber under test is also obtained, which is in agreement with the nominal value. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact signal transmission delay measurement system in optical fibers. The frequency of a microwave signal is locked to the signal transmission delay which can be obtained in frequency domain. With a frequency-scanning ambiguity resolving system, the signal transmission delay can be precisely determined. The system delay fluctuation is monitored in real-time and subtracted from the measurement result. This method achieves sub-picosecond uncertainty.

Abstract:Time transfer over optical fiber is finding numerous applications and attracting extensive research. In this paper, we present a high-precision fiber-optic two-way time transfer network based on the time–frequency domain transform (TFDT) measurement. The time signals of different sites are embedded into the chirp pulse signals, the relative time interval of which is converted to the mutual beat frequency and then measured in frequency domain. Accordingly enhancing the transformation factor can improve the measurement accuracy to enable the two-way fiber-optic time transfer with picosecond-level resolution. The accuracy of the TFDT measurement is experimentally tested under different pulse widths and signal-to-noise ratios. Furthermore, we implement a three-node time transfer network over a 5.9 km fiber loop link by the picosecond-precision two-way time transfer. The time stabilities of both remote sites can reach around 0.36 ps at 10000 s averaging time.

Abstract:A novel and simple technique for the measurement of time delay in the optical fiber by a free-running laser is proposed and demonstrated. The fiber to be measured was spliced to an erbium-doped fiber so as to form a ring-cavity laser. The mode beating frequency of the laser was measured to determine the round-trip time delay. This precise and efficient technique has an accuracy of 10(-8) for a fiber length of 100 km and of 10(-6) for a several-meters-long one. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Optical fiber is the cornerstone of the contemporary inter-network and has produced profound and far-reaching effect on modern information society ever since it was invented. The detection of key parameters of optical fiber such as length, refractive index, and chromatic dispersion is of great significance to ensure the quality and security of communication network. Here, a synchronous, fast, and high-precision measurement method for the length and dispersion of optical fibers is proposed, where the time-of-flight measurement and spectral interference are organically combined using an optical frequency comb (OFC) with the assistance of a modulated narrow linewidth single-frequency laser. The length and the dispersion coefficient distribution can be preciously obtained directly and simultaneously by measuring only single-frame interference spectrum. The excellent time–frequency characteristics of the OFC and our unique algorithm enable the realization of extremely high measurement accuracy and resolution: a resolution of @ 500 m and an accuracy of 1.5 cm ( relatively) @ 11 000 m, as well as a dispersion measurement accuracy of 0.5%. The method boasts rapid measurement, ample bandwidth, elimination of scanning, and exceptional precision, making it highly applicable in both optical communication and optical fiber sensing systems.

Abstract:Fiber-delay measurement is one of the key fundamental technologies in numerous fields. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-precision and concise optical time delay measurement system based on the technique of linear optical sampling, reaching the precision better than 100 fs under averaging. The use of only two optical frequency combs without locking the carrier-envelope-offset frequency greatly simplifies the structure of the time-delay measurement system. We also experimentally investigate the current limitations on the precision of the system. The timing jitter noises of two sources are mainly non-common mode, and are both restricted to the frequency sources. Our results indicate that the proposed device can measure fiber length fluctuations below 10 $\mu {\rm{m}}$, paving the way for further analyses of the external disturbances on the fiber link.

Abstract:It is highly desired to operate a joint time and frequency transfer over the exiting fiber-optic telecom networks with the commercial data transmission. Previously, we proposed a time transfer scheme based on bidirectional time division multiplexing transmission over a single fiber with the same wavelength (BTDM-SFSW), and an optical amplification scheme of single-fiber bidirectional-transmission unidirectional optical amplifier (SFBT-UOA). The effects of excess noises like Rayleigh backscattering etc. on the received time signals can be efficiently suppressed for an accepted timing jitter. Simultaneously, the bidirectional propagation delay symmetry can be guaranteed for an expected uncertainty without requiring complicated and expensive link calibration. In this paper, we propose a high-precision joint BTDM-SFSW based time and unidirectional frequency transfer over conventional telecom networks. A stable frequency signal is achieved by compensating the fiber temperature dependent phase variation according to the time transfer. The proposed joint transfer scheme is demonstrated over a 320 km fiber-optic telecom testbed with two 10 Gb/s data transmission channels. The time transfer stabilities (time deviation, TDEV) of 23.2 ps/s and 5.4 ps/10^5 s, respectively, and the frequency transfer stabilities (Allan deviation, ADEV) of 5.4X10^(-13)/s and 9.5X10^(-17)/10^5 s, respectively, are reached. The measured bit error rates (BER) of the 10 Gb/s communication data are well below 10^(-13).

Abstract:A photonic approach to realizing instantaneous measurement of microwave frequency using a pair of fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based optical differentiators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this approach, a first-order and a second-order FBG-based optical differentiators are used to achieve a linear power ratio function with a uniform measurement resolution and improved system dynamic range. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. A frequency measurement range of 6.5-15 GHz with a measurement resolution of ±0.3 GHz at different input microwave power levels is realized. The dynamic range of the system is analyzed and an improvement of about 10 dB is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a high-precision optical frequency noise detection and comparison technique using a two-way transfer method over a 260 km field fiber link. This method allows for the comparison of optical frequencies between remote optical references without the need for data transfer through communication. We extend a previously established two-way comparison technique to obtain all data at the local site. Two optical carrier signals are injected into the bidirectional fiber from both ends, and one carrier is reflected back from the remote end. This enables the phase comparison of the two carrier signals at a single site without the need to transmit experimental data. The common-mode frequency noise induced by the bidirectional fiber link is detected and effectively suppressed without the need for sophisticated active fiber noise control. Our demonstration system, which uses a 260 km field fiber link and a common laser source, achieves a fractional instability of 2.5×10−17 at 1 s averaging time and scales down to 3.5×10−21 at 8000 s. This scheme offers the distinct advantage of completing the comparison at a single site, eliminating the need for remote data transfer via communication. This method is expected to enhance reliability for high-precision frequency comparisons between remote optical clocks and advanced atomic clocks.

Abstract:True time-delay line with a high resolution and wide range is proposed and demonstrated. Tunable lasers and dispersion fibers are employed to control the time delay coarsely. An optical spectrum processor is utilized to realize high-resolution time-delay control by adding a quadratic optical phase shift, which compensates the group velocity dispersion of the fiber simultaneously. A coarse tuning range of 1717 ps is realized by changing the wavelength of the optical carrier, and a high resolution of 0.67 ps is achieved by translating the symmetry axis of the quadratic phase shift.

Abstract:Precision time synchronization between two remote sites is desired in many applications such as global positioning satellite systems, long-baseline interferometry, coherent radar detection and fundamental physics constant measurements. The recently developed frequency dissemination technologies based on optical fiber link have improved the transfer instability to the level of 10−19/day at remote location. Therefore it is possible to keep clock oscillation at remote locations continuously corrected, or to reproduce a “virtual” clock on the remote location. However the initial alignment and the correction of 1 pps timing signal from time to time are still required, besides the highly stabilized clock frequency transfer between distant locations. Here we demonstrate a time synchronization based on an ultra-stable frequency transfer system via 120-km commercial fiber link by transferring an optical frequency comb. Both the phase noise compensation in frequency dissemination and temporal basis alignment in time synchronization were implemented by a feed-forward digital compensation (FFDC) technique. The fractional frequency instability was measured to be 6.18 × 10−20 at 2000 s. The timing deviation of time synchronization was measured to be 0.6 ps in 1500 s. This technique also can be applied in multi-node fiber network topology.
