Abstract:Based on the theory and methods of quantity genetics, breeding physiology, statistics, computer science and poultry administrant science, the traditional poultry breeding has made great progress during the past half century. With the help of molecular genetics and correlative technologies, more great improvement on poultry production performance will be made. The key issues are to identify the major genes that affect the economic traits and to use these genes in practical breeding program. Two biotechnology methods, molecular marker technology and gene transfer technology, are thought to be applied widely in poultry breeding in the future. This paper reviewed the research progress and gave comments on the two biotechnology approaches.
