Abstract:Major infectious diseases affect human health seriously .In order to prevent , control and treat diseases effectively , the key lies in rapid detection and identification of pathogens .Rapid development and wide application of molecular biological techniques , such as PCR, gene sequencing and bio-chip technology , have greatly improved the prevention , control and treatment of major infectious diseases .The future development trend is to establish an accurate , rapid, high-throughput , portable and intelligent diagnostic technology of molecular biology .

Abstract:Nanobiotechnology is converged by nanotechnology and biotechnology, and is a major component of nanotechnology. It is also an important research topic in the area of biomedicine. The nanoparticle is the most interested and useful nanomaterial used in the biomedical field, which have many characteristics. This article introduced some new reserach achievements and progress in the biosensor and biodetection field based on the nanoparticle technology, presented the synthesis methods for nanoparticle, the application of nanoparticle in the nanobiosensor and nanobiochip, and some related research work carried out in our lab. Finally, the development of this field in the future was prospected.

Abstract:Applications of plant biotechnology play increasingly important role in solving food and energy crisis. As the world’s largest country by population, China pays special attention to the development of agricultural biotechnology and biomass energy technology. Several excellent review articles have introduced the research progress of China’s crop biotech and bioenergy. However, plant biotechnology in China has more diverse applications for non-food uses and environmental sustainability. This paper reviews the recent applications of plant biotechnology in bioenergy, biocontrol, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and phytoremediation of polluted environments. The emphasis is mainly focused on the bioconversion of biofuels especially bioethanol and the activated carbon, the survey of energy plants rich in hydrocarbons and carbohydrates, the biocontrol agents (plant epiphytic yeasts) and phytoremediation of heavy metal pollution and water eutrophication. Moreover, plant biotechnology shows very good efficacy in the identifications of confused medicinal plants, active constituents of TCM and the taxonomic identification of plant diseases and insects. The huge number of biomass residue and abundant plant resources provide vast application perspectives for China’s plant biotechnology. Abstract:In accordance with the long-standing experiences together with the recent achievements at home and abroad, the significance and tendency of modern biotechnology for the study on medicinal plants were expounded systematically by the naissance and application of modern biotechnology combined the with the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine and by the importance of studying the active constituents of Chinese materia medica and quality control for medicinal materials. Being stressed on establishment of clone, rapid propagation, regulation of cell secondary metabolism for medicinal plants and construction of quality control system for medicinal materials, the biotechnological steps for medicinal plants and quality standard of medicinal materials are introduced. In this way, the industry of Chinese materia medica is promising with safety, efficiency, stability, and controllability and is orienting towards the international market.
The application of modern biological technology in rapeseed breeding

Abstract:Modern biological technology has solved many difficult problems in crop breeding.Tissue culture,such as microspore culture and embryo technique was widely developed in rapeseed breeding and fundamental studies.Molecular markder was used succececfully for mapping gene,studying origin and classification,assisted breeding and predicting hybrid dominance.Genetic engineering was widely used to obtain some transgenic materials related to pest,disease and herbicide resistance,quality characters and sterility.These materials were used in production and research.This paper summarized the study and the application of tissue culture,molecular marker and genetic engineering in rapeseed breeding.Some advises on how to develop and promote the level of biological technology breeding in Sichuan province were also proposed.

Application of modern biotechnology in antibiotic production

Abstract:To improve core competitiveness of our antibiotic products in the international market,the relevant research results about production technologies of antibiotics,both at home and abroad, were reviewed in this paper;and the advantages and disadvantages of various biological technologies also were analyzed. The results show that the optimization of fermentation process control has become an urgent issue in the process of antibiotic fermentation. Although enzyme engineering technology has many advantages,such as high efficiency,low energy consumption,pollution-free,long life,safety,automation in the production of antibiotics,it still needs much time to apply these new biological engineering technologies to the enzyme engineering to continuously produce the enzyme that human needed. A new antibiotic has been produced under the experimental conditions via the protoplast fusion and gene engineering technology,however, engineering bacteria quality,antibiotic gene expression etc. remain problems yet to be solved. The essence of metabolic engineering is the gene engineering,but the volume of gene change involved in metabolic engineering is much greater than that in genetic engineering. Systematic biology technology,which takes the research biont as a whole,along with the study of proteomic technologies and reshape life synthetic biology technology,will bring groundbreaking innovation for antibiotic production. Nevertheless,there awaits not only many technological challenges such as system complexity,components compatibility and line system unpredictability,but also the ethical challenge of synthetic life.

Abstract:Crop plants provide essential food nutrients to humans and livestock, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, minerals and vitamins, directly or indirectly. The level and composition of food nutrients vary significantly in different food crops. As a result, plant foods are often deficient in certain nutrient components. Relying on a single food crop as source of nutrients thus will not achieve a balanced diet and results in malnutrition and deficiency diseases, especially in the developing countries, due mainly to poverty. The development and application of biotechnology offers opportunities and novel possibilities to enhance the nutritional quality of crops, particularly when the necessary genetic variability is not available. While initial emphasis of agricultural biotechnology has been placed on input traits of crops such as herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and virus resistance, increasing effort and promising proof-of-concept products have been made in output traits including enhancing the nutritional quality of crops since 1990s. Advancements in plant transformation and transgene expression also allow the use of plants as bioreactors to produce a variety of bio-products at large scale and low cost. Many proof-of-concept plant-derived healthcare products have been generated and several commercialized.

Abstract:Biotechnology is the term given to the branch of science that employs knowledge, techniques, and genetic engineering methods for creating various products using living organisms as raw material. Although this term has been recently adopted, humans have long been manipulating biological processes for their own benefit. Biotechnology is multidisciplinary and encompasses various fields of knowledge, with significant progress achieved over the years, particularly in the medical and cosmetic sectors. Through genetic engineering, it has become possible to edit genes more precisely, revolutionizing the study and manipulation of DNA and allowing the proposal and use of strategies that were once unthinkable in the scientific field to address contemporary issues. Among its most recent contributions are the development of new drugs and biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, cellular, genetic, and protein therapies, as well as the production of biocosmetics. However, there are still challenges to be faced in the extensive use of genetic engineering, ranging from production costs and the success of the technique at the molecular level to ethical issues surrounding the application of this technology. Thus, this literature review aims to discuss the most recent advances, applications, and future perspectives of biotechnology and genetic engineering in the scientific field.

Abstract:Recombinant DNA technology has significantly augmented the conventional crop improvement, and has a great promise to assist plant breeders to meet the increased food demand predicted for the 21st century. Dramatic progress has been made over the past two decades in manipulating genes from diverse and exotic sources, and inserting them into microorganisms and crop plants to confer resistance to insect pests and diseases, tolerance to herbicides, drought, soil salinity and aluminum toxicity; improved post-harvest quality; enhanced nutrient uptake and nutritional quality; increased photosynthetic rate, sugar, and starch production; increased effectiveness of biocontrol agents; improved understanding of gene action and metabolic pathways; and production of drugs and vaccines in crop plants. Despite the diverse and widespread beneficial applications of biotechnology products, there remains a critical need to present these benefits to the general public in a real and understandable way that stimulates an unbiased and responsible public debate. The development, testing and release of agricultural products generated through biotechnology-based processes should be continuously optimized based on the most recent experiences. This will require a dynamic and streamlined regulatory structure, clearly supportive of the benefits of biotechnology, but highly sensitive to the well being of humans and environment.

Abstract:Transgenic animal technology is one of the fastest growing biotechnology areas. It is used to integrate exogenous genes into the animal genome by genetic engineering technology so that these genes can be inherited and expressed by offspring. The transgenic efficiency and precise control of gene expression are the key limiting factors in the production of transgenic animals. A variety of transgenic technologies are available. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages and needs further study because of unresolved technical and safety issues. Further studies will allow transgenic technology to explore gene function, animal genetic improvement, bioreactors, animal disease models, and organ transplantation. This article reviews the recently developed animal transgenic technologies, including the germ line stem cell-mediated method to improve efficiency, gene targeting to improve accuracy, RNA interference-mediated gene silencing technology, zinc-finger nuclease gene targeting technology and induced pluripotent stem cell technology. These new transgenic techniques can provide a better platform to develop transgenic animals for breeding new animal varieties and promote the development of medical sciences, livestock production, and other fields.

Abstract:In this paper,the present situation and development of the research on process science in the area of industrial biotechnology were discussed.The important advances and international status on process science of industrial biotechnology were reviewed in this 973 program,such as the large-scale culture cell population effect,the high efficient global optimization principle of industrial biotechnology,the new strategy for process optimization of biotransformation,the new method for direct amplification of biochemical process,and the new optimization method for commercial fermentation.Although some distinct progress have been made in process science of industrial biotechnology in China,more efforts must be took to answer the basic questions about the direct amplification method basic on the large-scale culture cell population effect,and the new strategy for process optimization.

Abstract:Advances in turfgrass biotechnology including genetic transformation, molecular marker, and somaclonal variation were briefly reviewed in the paper. Several hot research topics of the development of turfgrass including abiotic stress resistance, insect and disease resistance, and the natural colorful leaves were presented. The nuclear technique will play very important role in turfgrass improvement such as ornamental character, abiotic tolerance, and disease resistance.

Abstract:During the past two decades, China has made great progress in tissue aid cell cultures of medicinal plants, this includes micropropagation, protoplast isolation and regeneration, and large scale cell suspension cultures. Recent development of plant transformation systems has offered a new approach to in vitro production of secondary metabolites. Hairy root cultures have been reported for a number of medicinal plant species, such as Artemisia annua that produces anti-malarial component artemisinin. Molecular cloning of key enzymes regulating the biosynthetic pathway and introduction of genes into medicinal plants has just started.

Abstract:Since the dawn of agriculture, humans have been manipulating crops to enhance their quality and yield. Via conventional breeding, seed producers have developed the modern corn hybrids and wheat commonly grown today. Newer techniques, such as radiation breeding, enhanced the seed producers' ability to develop new traits in crops. Then in the 1980's-1990's, scientists began applying genetic engineering techniques to improve crop quality and yield. In contrast to earlier breeding methods, these techniques raised questions about their safety to consumers and the environment. This paper provides an overview of the kinds of genetically modified crops developed and marketed to date and the value they provide farmers and consumers. The safety assessment process required for these crops is contrasted with the lack of a formal process required for traditionally bred crops. While European consumers have expressed concern about foods and animal feeds containing ingredients from genetically modified crops, Americans have largely been unconcerned or unaware of the presence of genetically modified foods on the market. This difference in attitude is reflected in Europe's decision to label foods containing genetically modified ingredients while no such labeling is required in the U.S. In the future, genetic modification will produce a variety of new products with enhanced nutritional or quality attributes.
