Abstract:Experimental and analytical studies were conducted on three full-scale precast (PC), prestressed concrete pile to cast-in-place (CIP) concrete pile-cap subassemblies having typical details used. in bridges in seismic regions. Test results of two connections under constant axial load and cyclic lateral forces indicated that despite a shallow embedment of the PC pile end to the pile cap, considerable moment can be resisted by the connection. Results from testing a pile-to-pile-cap connection subjected only to cyclic axial loading revealed adequate tensile and compressive capacities. It is proposed that the moment capacity of the pile-to-pile-cap connection with shallow embedment can be calculated based on the summation of the flexural capacity of the pile end considering only the anchor dowel bars and the resistance of the embedment.

Abstract:Reinforced concrete pile caps are typically calculated and designed based on the theories of beam and slab. Recent research literatures show a promising trend of using strut-and-tie modelling (STM) for the analysis of RC pile caps. Based on the already finished quasi-static experimental model with concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) column, RC cap and 16 H-shaped steel piles, Strut and tie modeling is used for analysing the force resisting mechanisms in the RC cap and the stirrup effective area is considered. The results from the STM design are compared to the ones from the beam design. It is discovered that the total reinforcement from the STM design are less than the ones from the beam design.

Abstract:To investigate the seismic behavior of bridge pile-to-pile-cap connections, five full-scale H-shaped steel pile-to-pile-cap connection subassemblies representing a portion of a typical bridge pile foundation were tested. Two of the full-scale subassembly specimens were subjected to a vertical cyclic load simulating axial forces in a pile caused by footing overturning during an earthquake attack. Two others were loaded with cyclic lateral force and constant vertical load. One specimen was tested under proportionally varied vertical and horizontal forces. It was found that, although it was designed as a pinned connection following the current design standard, the pile-to-pile-cap connection can sustain a significant amount of moment. Localized brittle failure was observed in the vicinity of the pile-to-pile-cap connection, as the results of unexpected moment resistance. Test results also showed that the anchorage details using two V-shape bars could not develop the full-design ultimate tensile capacity. Analytical methods are developed and found adequate to evaluate the strength of the pile-to-pile-cap connection.

Abstract:Along with the continuous development of the bridge construction techniques,the support-free capping beam technique has been widely applied to various areas.Take the capping beam construction of west side approach-bridge of Shanghai A15 Highway Min-Pu Bridge as an example,the on site experimental research of formwork mechanical property during the construction of large-bridge support-free capping beam has been conducted.By using strain rosettes to record the stress-strain behaviors of formwork at different positions,the stress distribution is inspected during the pouring,curing and erecting process of concrete capping beam and the normal stress and shear stress values of some feature points of capping beam formwork are obtained during pouring construction process.Finally,the formwork mechanical properties during the support-free capping beam construction process have been studied.

Abstract:The pile foundation cutting and underpinning process during shield tunnelling significantly impacts the stability of bridge substructures. In this paper, the shield tunnel area from Hongguzhong Avenue Station to Yangming Park Station of Nanchang Metro Line 2 was taken as the research subject, which crosses the pile foundation underpinning project of the south approach section of Bayi Bridge. Through numerical simulation and on-site monitoring analysis, the influence of the active underpinning process of shield tunnelling pile foundation on the deformation of bridge substructure was studied. First, through analyzing on-site conditions and comparing technical solutions, an active gantry bridge pile foundation underpinning technology was proposed, and the specific construction steps were determined. On this basis, for the C15 pile foundation with the most complex working conditions, ABAQUS software was applied to simulate the jack-up, unloading and pile-cutting process during the pile foundation underpinning construction, and the displacement development of the bridge pier, underpinning beam and new pile during the whole construction process were analyzed. Finally, through on-site monitoring data analysis, the technology’s feasibility and safety were further verified. At the same time, according to the analysis of the monitoring results of the bridge piers, underpinning beams and new piles, the results from the finite element software were nearly the same as the trend shown by the monitoring results, and the displacement of the main structures of the lower part of the bridge was small and within the control range. The above research work verified the applicability of the active gantry type bridge pile foundation underpinning technology in the pile foundation underpinning condition of the single-column single-pile bridge in the narrow space curved bridge section, and is worthy of further promotion and application.

Abstract:As for the separation of the abutments from the pier due to their improper location on the piers in the curved single-pedestal pier bridges in the urban overpasss,a finite element analysis of the support abutments on the piers is performed in the present paper.Effects of the support abutment deviation with respect to the pier axis on the mechanical behavior of the bridge are discussed.As an example,Shangshi overpass in Hangzhou is conserdered,and the erection of support abutments is investigated.It is seen from numerical results.That the appropriate layout of the abutment can assure lower torque and transverse force,as well as the low possibility that the abutments are separated from the piers.

Abstract:The static drill rooted nodular (SDRN) pile is a new type of composite pile that consists of a precast pile and surrounding cemented soil. Its cost advantages and environmentally friendly construction have been proven in applications in Southeast China. Moreover, the composition of pipe pile and nodular pile is based on the load transfer mechanisms of a pile foundation, which is effective in optimal design. This paper presents a field study on the behavior of SDRN piles under compression. The load-displacement response, axial force, mobilized load of pile cap, skin friction, and tip resistance of the composite pile are discussed. Here, the bilinear base load-displacement model was adopted to analyze the test results. It is found that providing caps on the static drill rooted piles takes full advantage of the static drill rooted method, and drilling and grouting into the soil beneath the cap, which can be considered a type of ground improvement treatment, can increase the bearing capacity of the pile cap; thus, setting a pile cap for this type of piles is recommended. The existence of the caps in the field tests decreased the skin friction of the upper part of pile shaft because of the additional settlement of the surrounding soil, which developed owing to the pressure from the caps. The frictional capacity of the concrete-cemented soil interface was much higher than that of the cemented soil-soil interface. The skin friction of the lower part of the pile shaft was about 1.25 times in clayey soil and 2.0 times in sandy soil compared with the bored pile. It can be concluded that the cemented soil-soil interface of the SDRN pile was probably better than the concrete-soil interface of the bored pile. The test results fitted the first stage curve of the bilinear model well, and it can be supposed that the base soil was strengthened because of the permeation of the cement paste.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel form of gravity foundation for long-span suspension bridges. The foundation combines a caisson with bored piles and thereafter is termed a caisson-bored pile composite anchorage (CBPCA) foundation. Based on a typical suspension bridge case study with traditional caisson foundation, the feasibility of the proposed foundation was evaluated. To further capture the performance of the CBPCA foundation, three-dimensional (3D) finite-element analyses were performed. The 3D finite-element method (FEM) was validated by comparing the simulated horizontal displacements of a nine-pile group with the reported field monitoring data. Parametric studies were also conducted to investigate the effects of various parameters associated with bored piles on the CBPCA foundation performance. The numerical analysis results indicate that increasing the pile diameter can significantly reduce the horizontal displacements of the theoretical joint point (TJP) and the structural forces of bored piles. In addition, the effect of the pile arrangement was also studied. The feasibility of reducing construction time and costs by adjusting the length of some bored piles was also discussed. Moreover, the soil strength has a great influence on the stability of the CBPCA foundation, implying that it may be not suitable for soft soil conditions, namely, a soil strength ratio smaller than 0.4 in this study.

Abstract:Based on the approach of prefabricated and assembled bridge piers in the accelerated bridge construction (ABC), this study proposes a new precast bridge pier-footing connection using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) cupped socket. Compared to conventional socket connection, the UHPC cupped socket connection can eliminate the adverse effects of reserved slots on the cap beams or footings. Three UHPC cupped socket pier specimens and one cast-in-place (CIP) pier specimen are designed and cast for quasi-static tests, and the damaging pattern and hysteretic characteristics of these specimens are investigated. After verifying the accuracy of the finite element model, the numerical parametric study was conducted to investigate two design parameters. The results show that the reasonable design of the cupped socket ensures that the piers connected by the UHPC cupped socket have the same seismic performance as the CIP pier. Generally, increasing the socket height enhances the strength while also increases the residual deformation of the specimens. When the axial compression is greater, it improves the structural strength, but it is not advantageous to structural ductility. Based on the experimental and simulative results, this study analyzes the force transmission and deformation mechanism of UHPC cupped socket piers. The ultimate displacement calculation equations of UHPC cupped socket piers are compared with those of different national standards and scholars' researches to identify applicable equations for the calculation of UHPC cupped socket piers.

Abstract:In view of the complexity of the pile foundation underpinning structure system and the stringent requirements of the construction process, this paper briefly describes the necessity of introducing epoxy resin reinforcing adhesive of planting rebar in the design of pile foundation underpinning beam structure to improve the mechanical properties of the reinforced beam new and old concrete joint surfaces and proposes a new type of pile foundation replacement beam system construction method by "chiseling + prestressed reinforcement + epoxy resin reinforcing adhesive". This paper uses an actual pile foundation underpinning project of an urban overpass as a prototype, designs and creates a model structure with a similarity ratio of 1/6, and performs repeated progressive static loading tests to study the load carrying capacity, displacement change, and other properties of the strengthened replacement structure, as well as analyses and distorts the overall working performance and failure mode of them. On this basis, the prototype structure's finite element analysis model was built, and the finite element analysis results were compared with the test results to obtain the mechanical properties and deformation characters of the actual pile foundation underpinning structure system corresponding to the actual underpinning beam load. This paper's study can lay the theoretical and experimental foundation for the smooth development of similar projects.

Load Bearing Performance Analysis Of Bridge Steel Coping

Abstract:Bridge coping is attributed to this kind of components which mainly bear combined bending moment and shearing force, and therefore coping design usually only considers the combined action of bending moment and shearing force, which bases on the most disadvantageous combination of permanent action, variable action and accidental action. The 40th steel coping of Beijing South Station Viaduct is analyzed in this article. The finite element software ANSYS is used in the analysis. Firstly, the mechanical behavior of steel coping under the most disadvantageous combination of the three kinds of function is analysed. Then the calculation to the bearing capacity of steel coping is carried on. By comparison, the article obtained the conclusion that the filled concrete can improve steel coping's mechanical behavior to a certain extent and the steel coping's bearing capacity satisfies the request of design. The analysis results can be used as reference for practical engineering. In the Article some issues which should be pay attention to in the design of bridge steel coping are found.
Analysis of Influence of Tie Beam on Seismic Performance of Double Leg Thin-walled High Piers

Abstract:The double leg thin-walled pier is a common bridge pier form of continuous rigid frame bridge.The longitudinal stiffness of the high pier with a height more than 40 m is generally weak.In the design,the tie beam is usually used to reduce the calculated height of the bridge piers,and improve the stress characteristics of high pier.In this paper,the engineering background is the double leg thin-walled high piers of a typical high pier and long span continuous rigid frame bridge.A refined finite element model of the double leg thin-walled high piers is established in ABAQUS,and the influence of the reinforcement ratio,hoop reinforcement ratio of the tie beam,the stiffness ratio of the tie beam-bridge piers and the number of the tie beam on the seismic performance of high piers is analyzed.The results show that the number of the tie beam and the stiffness ratio of the tie beam-bridge pier have greater influence on the hysteretic performance of the high pier than the reinforcement ratio and hoop reinforcement ratio of the tie beam.

Abstract:The pylon is one of the key force-bearing structures of a cable-bearing bridge. Combining the advantages of factory manufacturing and modular installation of steel pylons, and the higher rigidity and lower cost of reinforced concrete pylons, a steel shell-concrete composite pylon is proposed. In this article, the structural construction of a steel shell-concrete composite pylon is introduced in detail. The structural mechanical properties, action mechanism of the stiffened slab rib and both transverse and vertical tenon are probed. Also, design theories, principles and methods are established. The industrialized construction technology of steel shell-concrete composite pylons is studied. The test results show that the interface strain of the steel shell-concrete composite pylon satisfies the assumption of plane section. During the whole loading process, the steel shell and the concrete can work together to give full play to the role of steel and concrete. In practice, the construction of the Nanjing Jiangxinzhou Yangtze River Bridge has demonstrated that 80% of the construction workload of steel shell-concrete composite pylons can be factory completed, the construction speed can be increased significantly and the labor input for on-site construction operations can be reduced by 75%.

Abstract:The seismic resilience of steel bridge piers can be weakened due to the ageing effect that occurs throughout their entire life-cycle stage. Seismic strengthening is a practical approach to enhance the seismic performance of ageing piers. Nevertheless, the conventional strengthening methods often result in a higher stiffness of bridge piers. This can potentially intensify the local seismic responses of the strengthened bridge pier and change the failure mode during seismic events. Hence, this study extends a strengthening technique, the Contact Stiffener Strengthening Method (CSSM), which aims to enhance the ductility of ageing steel bridge piers without causing an excessive increase in stiffness. This method uses the contact effect to increase the seismic performance of aging piers by ingeniously designed stiffeners. The static and dynamic approaches are employed to compare the effects of CSSM and traditional strengthening methods on seismic performance enhancement. Finally, this study proposes the prediction methods for the ultimate strength and displacement of the strengthened piers. The analysis results reveal that the occurrence of the contact phenomenon and buckling at the free-end plate indicate the initiation and ultimate states of the contact stiffeners. The strengthening efficiency in retrofitted piers is greatly influenced by the parameters of the free-end plate. The strengthening efficiency of bridge piers can be significantly affected by varying parameters of corrosion when using the same contact stiffener. The errors in the proposed prediction methods for the ultimate displacement and ultimate strength of the strengthened piers can be controlled within 15% and 10%, respectively.

Abstract:The application of precast concrete segmental piers in modern construction, being economic and environmental, is an inevitable global trend. With the ease of construction and high performance, socket connections have a broad prospect for substructures, which can connect precast piers to footings with preformed sockets through narrow joints grouted by high-performance cement-based materials. However, these joints are different in direct-shear behaviour than those in precast concrete segmental beams. In this study, the direct-shear behaviour of narrow joints in socket connections for precast pier-to-pile footing systems is investigated through experimental analysis. The joint specimens were designed as full-scale local models for push-out tests. The results reveal that improving the tensile strength of the grouting material by applying steel-fiber reinforced concrete or self-compacting concrete, decreasing the width of the joints and increasing the number of shear keys are all beneficial to improve the direct-shear performance, while the use of corrugated steel pipes as a stay-in-place formwork without additional reinforcements in footings reduces this characteristic.

Abstract:Based on the project of a rigid-frame and cable-stayed composite bridge,the principles and methods for the construction monitoring of this kind of projects are proposed.And a three-dimensional space finite element model is built to simulate and study the whole process of the construction.This paper also emphatically introduces a field measurement scheme,and compares and analyzes the calculated value with the field measured results.The practical research indicates that the monitoring procedure and technique measures employed in the monitoring process are highly practical and can provide reference for the construction of composite bridges of this kind.

Abstract:Due to heavier traffic loads, progressive structural age, and corrosion of steel reinforcement, there has been an increasing need to strengthen the pile foundation of concrete bridges. In this paper, the damages and deteriorations on a concrete bridge in Guangzhou City are described in details, which causes are discussed also. The rehabilitation method by prestressed cushion cap is proposed based on the finite element analysis. The rehabilitation scheme is verified by the result of calculation, and the practice of strengthening project proves that this method is technical feasibility, construction convenience and lower economic cost. The research results can be provided as a reference for the similar bridges.
