Analysis of Multi-Physical Signal Characteristics of Inter-Turn Oil-Paper Insulation Partial Discharge

Abstract:As the core components of the power grid, the health condition of transformers directly affects the safe operation of the grid. Therefore, it is important to find effective methods to evaluate the internal early fault status of transformers. In order to clarify the characteristics of the physical parameters during the development of partial discharge of the inter-turn electrodes inside a transformer, we analyzed the differences between them and other partial discharge signal characteristics. Moreover, we established a research platform for the partial discharge characteristics of inter-turn electrodes in oil-paper insulation. The constant voltage is adopted in this series of tests. High voltage is applied on the inter-turn electrode specimens with different time length in different groups of tests. And we used high-frequency current coils, ultrasonic sensors, and ultra-high frequency sensors to synchronously measure various physical signals. The results indicate that the partial discharge of inter-turn electrodes can be divided into three stages: the initiation stage, the development stage, and the pre-breakdown stage. During the initiation stage, the conventional pulse current signals and ultra-high frequency signals appeared less frequently within one power frequency cycle. As the discharge progresses into the development stage, the discharge frequency increases rapidly, and the distribution of discharge points widens in phase. In the pre-breakdown stage, the discharge phase almost fills the entire power frequency cycle. The PRPD spectra of different physical signals during different experimental periods exhibit distinct morphological characteristics. Compared to traditional single detection methods, the comprehensive utilization of multiple physical signals enables a more accurate analysis of discharge characteristics. The present study analyzes the partial discharge characteristics of inter-turn electrode structures in oil-paper insulation, establishes a linkage between the discharge process and multiple physical signals, and provides data references and theoretical support for transformer condition assessment and early warning.
