Abstract:The type and concentration of dissolved gases in transformer insulating oil are used to assess transformer conditions. In this paper, an online detection setup for measuring the concentration of multicomponent gases dissolved in transformer insulating oil is developed, which consists of an oil-gas separation system and an optical system for acquiring the transformer status in real time. The oil-gas separation system uses low pressure, constant temperature, and low-frequency stirring as working conditions for degassing large-volume oil samples based on modified headspace degassing. The optical system uses tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) to determine the gas concentration. Six target gases (methane, ethylene, ethane, acetylene, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide) were detected by three near-infrared lasers (1569, 1684, and 1532 nm). The stability of the optical system was improved by the common optical path formed by time-division multiplexing (TDM) technology. The calibration experiments show that the second harmonics and the concentrations of the six gases are linear. A comparison experiment with gas chromatography (GC) demonstrates that the error of acetylene reaches the nL/L level, while the other gases reach the μL/L level. The data conforms to the power industry testing standards, and the state of the transformer is analyzed by the detected six characteristic gases. The setup provides an effective basis for the online detection of dissolved gas in transformer insulating oil.

Abstract:Potential faults can be timely detected through online monitoring to the dissolved gases in the transformer oil so as to improve the safety of the electric power system. Firstly, the online monitoring technology of dissolved gases in the transformer oil is discussed in detail. Then, a low cost monitoring method to the characteristics gas dissolved in the transformer oil by using the semiconductor sensor array is put forward in this paper. In order to solve the cross sensitivity problem of a single gas sensor to the gaseous mixture, a signal-purifying method of gas sensor array based on neural network is introduced and used to settle the cross sensitivity problems among the characteristic gases when different sensors are used to monitor the gases concentration in the system. On this basis, a wireless monitoring system to the dissolved gases in the transformer oil is developed. The development system can realize to on-tine monitor the characteristic gases dissolved in the transformer oil such as hydrogen, methane, ethane, ethene, acetylene, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. And, the transformer condition information can also be transmitted in a wireless, long-distance, rapid and low-cost way for the system.

Abstract:A new method of data wireless transmission is presented after thoroughly studying on monitoring gas dissolved in the transformer oil.The method taking advantage of GPRS(General Packet Radio Service)for data wireless transforming can realize the long-distance,rapid and low cost transmission of transformer state data.In the paper,the structural design of online monitoring system of dissolve gas in the transformer oil is given,special wireless communication protocol of online monitoring system in the transformer oil and communication protocol of the wireless data acquisition terminal of the dissolved gas in the transformer oil and data acquirement module are compiled,and data acquisition module,the wireless data acquisition terminal of the dissolved gas in the transformer oil and software of the host computer are developed.The wireless data acquisition terminal integrates with GPRS network communication and data acquisition,which realizes the acquisition of the dissolving gas in the transformer oil and data timely and low cost transmission.The terminal is suitable for various sensors and can adjust parameters according to practical situation.The terminal not only can realize data transmission of transformer,but also can be used for several fields,which provide a solid foundation for industrialization.

Abstract:This study summarizes the on-line detection of gases dissolved in transformer oil at home and abroad. A new method of data wireless transmission is presented which takes advantage of GPRS for data wireless transforming can realize transformer state data long-distance, rapid and low cost transmission. We present the whole design project of transformer online monitoring based on GPRS/GSM, the hardware structure design of the transformer online data acquisition terminal based on GPRS, and the hardware structure design of A/D converter.

Abstract:A novel portable multi-parameter water quality analyzer was developed based on the multi-spectra information fusion theory. The analysis method, hardware structures, working principles and software functions are described in the present paper. As a small size, rapid testing and outdoor green instrument, this analyzer can be used to measure six water organic pollution indicators, including TOC, COD, etc., through analyzing the spectra of a small amount of water sample without any chemical reagent. The practical water analysis experiments showed that the multi-spectra fusion method used by this analyzer possesses a higher measurement precision than that of the UV spectral analysis method, which is popularly used by the water quality analyzers in the market.

Abstract:The whole procedure by gas chromatography analysis is stated and makes fault judgement to the transformer interior by analyzing data.Transformer oil and fibrous insulation material which are catalyzed by moisture,oxygen,quantity of heat and copper and iron in operation are aged and resolved.The gas which is produced is mostly dissolved in water,but the rate of gas is quite slow.When the transformer interior is in primary faults or malkes new fault,its gas quantity is very obvious and most initial defect can present early indieation,thus the fault can be detected by correct analysis to the gas procluced by the transformer.

[Determination of partition coefficient of dissolved gases in transformer oil using phase ratio variation method and static headspace gas chromatography]

Abstract:The partition coefficients of dissolved gases in transformer oil were determined using a phase ratio variation method and static headspace gas chromatography (GC). A pressure balancing and gas volume-metering device was connected to the vent of a sample loop on a six-port injection valve of the GC. The gas phase sample from the headspace vial of 25 mL was transferred to an 80 microL sample-loop through a fused silica capillary of 0.53 mm i.d., and then separated and determined quantitatively by GC. A 2 m x 1 mm i.d. GDX502 micro-packed column was used for the separation. Five different gas-liquid volume ratios in the headspace vials were measured at different equilibrium concentrations. The partition coefficients of hydrocarbon gases including methane, acetylene, ethylene, ethane and propane dissolved in transformer oil were determined by using linear regression analysis at 20 degrees C and 50 degrees C separately. The errors between the real values and regression values from experimental data were less than 4.14% except methane. Fundamental data for on-line measurement of dissolved gases in transformer oil are provided by GC.

Abstract:A novel diffusion absorption heat transformer was proposed and built. The temperature lift performance of the novel system was experimentally tested with the diffusion gas supplied by an electric gas pump or a thermally driven pump, and the gross temperature lift was realized as high as 17.6 degrees C and 11.8 degrees C, respectively. Higher mass fraction of HCOOK in aqueous HCOOK solution, lower flow rate of aqueous HCOOK solution, and larger flow rate of refrigerant, were all beneficial to higher temperature lift. It is of remarkable significance for the utilization and upgrading of low grade thermal energy that a temperature lift can be realized by the diffusion absorption heat transformer with heat input but no need of electricity. Abstract:Transformer oil used in oil-filled electrical power transformers aims at insulating, stopping arcing and corona discharge, and dissipating transformer heat. Transformer running inevitably induces molecule decomposition, thus leading to gases released into transformer oil. The released gases not only reduce the transformer oil's performance but also possibly induce transformer fault. To prevent catastrophic failure, approaches using, e.g., chromatography and spectroscopy, precisely measure dissolved gases to monitor transformer oil quality; however, many of these approaches still suffer from complicated operations, expensive costs, or slow speed. To solve these problems, we provide a new transformer oil quality evaluation method based on quantitative phase microscopy. Using our designed phase real-time microscopic camera (PhaseRMiC), under- and over-focus images of gas bubbles in transformer oil can be simultaneously captured during field of view scanning. Further, oil-to-gas-volume ratio can be computed after phase retrieval via solving the transport of intensity equation to evaluate transformer oil quality. Compared with traditionally and widely used approaches, this newly designed method can successfully distinguish transformer oil quality by only relying on rapid operations and low costs, thus delivering a new solution for transformer prognosis and diagnosis.

Abstract:Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is one of the most essential methods for troubleshooting oil-immersed transformers in the power industry. The demand for quantitative and digital DGA, particularly in computational high-voltage engineering applications, continuously increases. On the basis of thermodynamics principle, a computational method for determining the thermal decomposition gas content of alkane molecules in transformer oil was studied. In this approach, specific heat capacity serves as a temperature-dependent function, considering the effect of temperature on the chemical equilibrium constant. Moreover, the relationship between the enthalpy of the reaction and the equilibrium constant is derived, considering temperature. Competitive factors were proposed to quantify the number of moles of each substance in the reaction to characterize the phenomenon of varying extent of thermal decomposition reactions at a specific temperature, and the thermal decomposition equations of alkane molecules were established. This study used a mixed system of propane and butane for calculation. The computational validity of the proposed methodology was verified by analyzing and comparing the results with the gas generation in the transformer oil provided by the U.S. Department of the Interior, as well as by using the improved IEC ratios to output the types of faults associated with the gas generation.

Abstract:Currently, the chromatographic column and gas sensor are widely used in online monitoring devices of dissolved gases in transformer oil. But there exist disadvantages with these devices, such as, the consumption of carrier gas, the requirement of regular calibration, etc. Since FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) is highly accurate, consumes no carrier gas and requires no calibration, the application of FTIR in such monitoring devices is studied. Experiments on the flow gas method have been designed. And the FTIR spectrometer is used to collect the infrared spectra of C2 H2 , which is the most important gas for transformer fault diagnosis. Curve fitting of the output of FTIR is performed, and the effects of quantitative characteristics and concentration range on the quantitative analysis are discussed. In addition, the lowest detection limit to FTIR is tested. Experiment and calculation results show, that by taking the peak height in the low concentration range or peak area in the high concentration range as the quantitative characteristic, using the cubic polynomial to fit the output curve of FTIR, the accuracy can be improved. The lowest detecting limit with 2.4m gas cell is below 0. 3 μL/L and that of 10 cm gas cell is below 3μL/L.

Abstract:A novel vapor dynamic headspace enrichment device was set up for nontarget screening of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water. The main operating parameters of this device, such as length of distillation tube, volume of collected condensate, and choice of absorbent, were optimized. In this device, vapor was utilized as a purge gas and water was utilized as a absorbent. With the help of the device, one liter of water sample could be concentrated to 5 mL and the sensitivity of traditional purge and trap-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (P&T-GC-MS) could be improved 1 - 2 orders of magnitude. Source and disinfected water samples from a water treatment plant were analyzed with this method. Compared with the traditional P&T-GC-MS analysis without pre-enrichment, the numbers of identified VOCs were improved from 0 to 16 for source water and 5 to 35 for disinfected water samples. It is also shown that there are many halide compounds in VOCs in disinfected water which do not exist in source water.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H 2 ) is a typical product dissolved in transformer oil and a typical fault diagnosis gas for oil-immersed transformer equipment. The large concentration range and fast detection of H 2 gas sensors have certain engineering significance. In this paper, TiO 2 quantum dots (QDs) with particle size of about 5 nm were prepared by solvothermal reaction, and SnO 2 nanosheets modified by TiO 2 QDs was successfully prepared. The gas sensing performance of TiO 2 -SnO 2 to H 2 was systematically explored. The optimal operating temperature of the sensors is 400 o C. At the optimal operating temperature of 400 o C, the TiO 2 (1%)-SnO 2 sensor demonstrated the most excellent gas sensing performance to H 2 , such as the short response and recovery time (2 s and 5 s to 200 ppm H 2 ), excellent stability, outstanding selectivity and large detection range of 4.8-5000 ppm. The first-principles calculations were carried out and the gas sensing mechanism was further elaborated, which show that the improvement of the TiO 2 (1%)-SnO 2 is mainly ascribed to the sensitization and homojunction effect of TiO 2 QDs. The TiO 2 (1%)-SnO 2 gas sensor is expected to provide a choice for the dissolved gas analysis (DGA) method in transformer oil analysis.

Abstract:An oil-immersed transformer is a critical electrical device for power delivery. Online monitoring of transformer operation is the key to ensuring the regular operation of power systems. This paper proposes Au/ZnO, Pd/ZnO, and Pt/ZnO heterojunctions as new gas-sensitive materials and investigates their gas-sensitive performance to dissolved gases (C2H4, CO, and H2) in transformer oil. Upon theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the analysis of the total density of states (TDOS), partial density of states (PDOS), molecular orbital theory, and charge deformation density reveals that Au, Pd, and Pt form heterojunctions with ZnO, which enhance the electrical conductivity of the system. Meanwhile, intrinsic ZnO is unsuitable for gas detection and adsorption, while the Au/ZnO heterojunction suits C2H4 detection. In contrast, the Pd/ZnO heterojunction is suitable for H2 detection, and the Pt/ZnO heterojunction is suitable for C2H4 and CO detection. The electrical conductivity of the adsorption models is changed to varying degrees after gas adsorption. The different change rate electrical conductivity just serves as a theoretical foundation for determining the type and concentration of dissolved gases in transformer oil. The research results act as a theoretical foundation for constructing gas sensors with a ZnO-based material.

Abstract:Rapid and direct monitoring of dissolved gases in liquids under strong electromagnetic interference is very important. Electronic gas sensors that can be placed into liquids are difficult to work reliably under strong electromagnetic fields. The existing optical monitoring techniques for dissolved gases all require gas-liquid separation, and are conducted in gas phase, which have poor timeliness. In this paper, a dissolved gas monitoring probe without liquid-gas separation under strong electromagnetic interference is proposed. We take transformer oil-dissolved acetylene monitoring as an example, an oil-core photonic crystal fiber photothermal interferometry probe is proposed and demonstrates the feasibility of trace oil-dissolved acetylene directly monitoring without oil-gas separation. The minimum detection limit reaches 1.4 ppm, and the response time is about 70 minutes. Due to the good insulation performance and the compact size, the all-fiber probe provides applicability to be placed into transformer oil and perform on-line monitoring under strong electromagnetic interference.

Abstract:Power transformers are the most important assets of electric power substations. The reliability in the operation of electric power transmission and distribution is due to the correct operation and maintenance of power transformers. The parameters that are most used to assess the health status of power transformers are dissolved gas analysis (DGA), oil quality analysis (OQA) and content of furfuraldehydes (FFA) in oil. The parameter that currently allows for simple online monitoring in an energized transformer is the DGA. Although most of the DGA continues to be done in the laboratory, the trend is online DGA monitoring, since it allows for detection or diagnosis of the faults throughout the life of the power transformers. This study presents a review of the main DGA monitors, single- or multi-gas, their most important specifications, accuracy, repeatability and measurement range, the types of installation, valve or closed loop, and number of analogue inputs and outputs. This review shows the differences between the main existing DGA monitors and aims to help in the selection of the most suitable DGA monitoring approach according to the needs of each case.

Abstract:Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) is widely used for monitoring and diagnosing the health status of power transformers. A highly sensitive low-pressure tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor was developed and evaluated for the detection of dissolved carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in transformer insulating oil. The sensor addressed the issue of headspace gas dilution caused by the volume of multipass gas cells, thus improving the minimum detection limit (MDL) for dissolved gases. Firstly, an analysis was conducted to determine the essential parameters required for the sensor. These parameters included an operating pressure of 0.1 atm and optimal modulation depths of 4.1 and 4.4. Subsequently, the sensor was calibrated using a mechanical oscillation gas chromatography (MO-GC) method. At 0.1 atm, the gas extraction ratios for the low-pressure dynamic headspace sampling unit were 8.25 and 4.5 for CO and CO 2 , respectively. The Allan variance analysis revealed that the equivalent MDL for dissolved CO was 0.147 ppm, while for dissolved CO 2 , it was 0.9 ppm. Finally, comparative experiments with different oil samples showed measurement errors of less than 6 ppm or 6 %. Continuous measurements resulted in relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 4 %, validating the precision and repeatability of the sensor.

Abstract:A survey on oil chromatogram analysis for fault diagnosis of transformers is presented.First, the frequently encountered transformer faults are analyzed, and the usually adopted testing and monitoring methods for the running status of transformers are given.Then, emphasis is put on the oil chromatogram analysis for fault diagnosis methods of transformers, in which the expert system and neural network based methods are particularly discussed. Finally,the development trend of the oil chromatogram analysis based fault diagnosis of transformers and some open problems are pointed out.

Abstract:A method of comprehensive screening of the target and non-target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial exhaust gas using thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) has been developed. In this paper, two types of solid phase adsorption column were compared, and the Tenex SS TD Tube was selected. The analytes were enriched into the adsorption tube by constant flow sampling, and detected by TD-GC-MS in full scan mode. Target compounds were quantified by internal standard method, and the quantities of non-target compounds were calculated by response coefficient of toluene. The method detection limits (MDLs) for the 24 VOCs were 1.06 to 5.44 ng, and MDLs could also be expressed as 0.004 to 0.018 mg/m3 assuming that the sampling volume was 300 mL. The average recoveries were in the range of 78.4% to 89.4% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 3.9% to 14.4% (n=7). The established analytical method was applied for the comprehensive screening of VOCs in a waste incineration power plant in Dalian city. Twenty-nine VOCs were identified. In these compounds, only five VOCs were the target compounds set in advance, which accounted for 26.7% of the total VOCs identified. Therefore, this study further proved the importance of screening non-target compounds in the analysis of VOCs in industrial exhaust gas, and has certain reference significance for the complete determination of VOCs distribution.
