Abstract:A novel structure of class D amplifier is presented. Class D amplifier has the advantage of high efficiency, thus it is often applied in devices with low power dissipation. However, the conventional class D amplifier is the switching amplifier and it's an open loop system, significant non-linearity is inevitably presented at the output signal, so is the noise introduced by supply fluctuation. Now the Σ-Δ modulation technology and the concept of close loop are introduced into it, the non-linearity and noise at the output stage are effectively suppressed. Firstly, this paper theoretically analyzes how the Σ-Δ modulation technology in a close loop system suppresses the non-linearity and noise produced by class D amplifier, which is based on a 1st order Σ-Δ modulation system; Secondly, a 7th order modulation system is modeled by Simulink, which is used to verify the system validity.

Abstract:A multi-bit quantized high performance sigma-delta (Sigma-Delta) audio DAC is presented. Compared to its single-bit counterpart, the multi-bit quantization offers many advantages, such as simpler Sigma-Delta modulator circuit, lower clock frequency and smaller spurious tones. With the data weighted average (DWA) mismatch shaping algorithm, element mismatch errors induced by multi-bit quantization can be pushed out of the signal band, hence the noise floor inside the signal band is greatly lowered. To cope with the crosstalk between digital and analog circuits, every analog component is surrounded by a guard ring, which is an innovative attempt. The 18-bit DAC with the above techniques, which is implemented in a 0.18 mu m mixed-signal CMOS process, occupies a core area of 1.86 mm(2). The measured dynamic range (DR) and peak SNDR are 96 dB and 88 dB, respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a discrete-time sliding mode controlled current-source inverter (CSI) system used in AC signal power amplifier. A discrete-time sliding mode controller based on a novel reaching condition is adopted, which can force the state vectors into the sliding domain quickly and reduce the chattering of the system greatly. The sliding domain and the sliding surface coefficient are analyzed to ensure that the system will converge to zero asymptotically and keep stable. The proposed control strategy provides excellent robustness with regard to external disturbances, and well steady state operation and dynamic response of the output current. Final experimental results are demonstrated to validate the theoretical design.

Abstract:A third-order low-power ΣΔ modulator for a high-end 18bit audio-band analog-to-digital converter is developed.The modulator is based on a 2-1 cascaded architecture with optimized coefficients to extend the dynamic range and reduce the spectrum tones.The gate-source bootstrapping technique is employed to enhance the sampling switch linearity.A power-efficient class A/AB operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) is proposed,which achieves a high slew rate of 100V/μs with only 0.8mA current consumption.The OTA designed for the second and third integrators is a scaled version of the first OTA,which allows for further power reduction.The modulator is implemented in SMIC mixed-signal 0.18μm CMOS technology,and the area is 1.1mm × 1.0mm.Experimental results indicate a peak signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 91dB and a dynamic range of 94dB over a 22.05kHz bandwidth.The chip operates under a 3.3V power supply with a power dissipation of 6.8mW,which is suitable for high-performance,low-power audio ADC applications.

Low-power High-Linearity Sigma-Delta Modulator for Audio Applications

Abstract:A low-power high-linearity sigma-delta modulator for digital audio analog-to-digital converter was presented,which used an improved cascaded sigma-delta noise-shaper with reduced sensitivity to the operational amplifier nonlinearity.High-linearity sampling was achieved with a novel bootstrapped switch.A low-power operational amplifier was designed with a class AB output stage,which was at least 2-times more power efficient than a regular folded-cascode amplifier.The modulator was implemented in a SMIC standard 0.18 μm CMOS process.Simulation showed that the signal to noise-plus-distortion ratio(SNDR) was 111.8 dB and the dynamic range(DR) was 115 dB under all temperature and process corner conditions.The power consumption of the proposed modulator was 2.6 mW power from a 3 V supply,suitable for the low power audio Codec applications.

Abstract:This paper provides an audio 2-1 cascaded ΣΔ modulator using a novel gain-boost class-C inverter. The gain-boost class-C inverter behaves as a subthreshold amplifier. By introducing a gain-boost module, the inverter DC-gain is increased from 48 dB to 67 dB. The gain-boost class-C inverter consumes 57 μW at 1.2-V supply, where the gain-boost module consumes only 3 μW. In addition, an on-chip body bias technique is introduced to compensate the process and supply voltage variations of the class-C inverter. The proposed inverter-based ΣΔ modulator chip is implemented in 0.13-μm CMOS process, and achieves 86-dB peak-signal to noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) and 90-dB dynamic range (DR) over 22.05-KHz bandwidth at 1.2-V supply consuming 360 μW, which demonstrates that the gain-boost class-C inverter is particularly suitable for micro-power high-resolution applications.

Abstract:An 18-bit 48 kHz Δ-Σ D/A converter for digital audio application is designed.For the interpolator,multiplier-free and time division multiplex mode are used to reduce the hardware overhead.The Δ-Σ modulator employs a 5~(th)-order 1-bit quantization loop,and a 100 dB in-band SNR was achieved on FPGA platform.The post switched capacitor(SC) filter was implemented in CSMC's 0.6 μm CMOS process.The core chip occupies an area of 1.73 mm×1.11 mm,and it consumes less than 22 mW of power from a single 5 V supply voltage.

Abstract:A 0.9 V 58 mu W 92 dB SNDR audio Delta Sigma modulator is presented. Through combining the featured architecture with elaborately designed circuits, ultra-low-power operation is achieved. A power-efficient switched opamp (SO) with a new chopper stabilisation circuit for SO application is exploited to reduce power and minimise flicker noise. A novel data-weighted-averaging (DWA) technique is applied to suppress the harmonic distortion effectively.

Abstract:To deeply discuss the application of chaotic theory for A/D conversion,the design theory and practical issue regarding the realization of chaotic code A/D converters are presented in this paper.Based on sensitive dependence on initial conditions in chaotic systems and symbol dynamics,a novel nonlinear circuit was designed.The negligible DC offset of the operation amplifier and comparator showed that it was a sawtooth map after analysis of the nonlinear circuit.The effect of A/D conversion results was studied by Matlab simulation in the case of change of the circuitis mapping parameter.Experiment results indicated that the linear relation between initial values and distances of their orbits is obvious,and that more than 12 bit resolution can be achieved without any digit or analog compensation and use of unexpensive elements.It is appropriate for SoC IP design.

Abstract:In today's mobile communication systems, the design of power amplifier is becoming more challenging because the modulated RF signal high PAR(peak average ratio) must be amplified linearly so as to lower ACPR(adjacent channel power ratio) and EBR(error bit rate).In addition, the power consumption needs to be reduced to minimum.The digital predistortion technique is becoming an increasingly attractive solution to these problems, due to its excellent linearization capability and flexible application.In this paper, the basic concepts of DPD are illustrated, including the models and corresponding implementations.We believe the application of DPD to Doherty PA will be the most promising technique.

Abstract:A monolithic 16-bit Δ-Σ D/A converter was presented,which was comprised of an interpolator,a Δ-Σ modulator and a power-efficient switching(Class D amplifier) output stage.Fabricated in a 0.18 μm standard CMOS process,this D/A converter can implement 16-bit resolution with a dynamic range of 97 dB and signal band of 8 kHz.An efficiency of 90% is achieved for an 8 Ω speaker.The maximum output power is 100 mW from a single 1.8 V power supply,and the third harmonics is less than-100 dB.This chip can be used in audio applications,such as hearing aid or mp3 players,where the power budget is limited.

Abstract:A conversion-precision and sampling-rate programmable pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC),without adjusting the bias current of operational amplifiers,is presented in this paper.This ADC achieves a conversion-precision of 8 to 11bits and a sampling-rate from 400k to 40MSa/s.To increase the power-on speed and reduce the power consumption,a novel pre-charged switched operational amplifier is proposed.The power can be significantly reduced by adopting an improved current modulated power scaling (CMPS) technique,the proposed switched operational amplifier,a SHA-less technique,and a dynamic comparator.The ADC is designed in a 1.8V 1P6M 0.18μm CMOS process.Simulation results indicate that the ADC exhibits a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 81dB and a signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 67dB.Programmed at 11bits and 40MSa/s,the ADC consumes 29mW when a 19.02MHz sine signal is fed-in.

Abstract:This paper proposes a Digitally Controlled Programmable Delay Element (DCPDE) architecture, and develops the principle analysis and design procedure. The delay of the DCPDE changes monotonically with respect to the digital input vector. In the architecture, a current mirror controlled by binary digital input vector supplies the charge and discharge current for the DCPDE, obtaining equal delay at both rising and failing edge of input signal. The DCPDE can be embedded in All Digital Delay Locked loop (ADDLL), providing 50 percent duty cycle and 290ps -770ps delay time for both edges.

Abstract:The authors present a time-to-digital converter based on multi-stage amplification structure. This structure consists of coarse stage and fine stage. Coarse stage utilizes delay line to get the residue which is less than a buffer’s delay. A small area and low power residue selecting logic is designed. In the fine stage, 2× time amplifier and half judger is utilized to generate 4 binary codes from MSB to LSB. Simulation in SMIC 65 nm process shows that the new structure has a high conversion speed up to 470 MS/s and power consumption is 1.3 m W at 100 MHz with the resolution of 1.44 ps and range of 736 ps. An accurate gain robust to PVT variation can be achieved with the calibration of the time amplifier, so a good integral nonlinearity is obtained.
