Abstract:This paper investigates ways of knowing a particular place in landscape architectural practice across cultures. The approach of landscape architecture to place suggests a primary goal to look after places’ characteristics. Therefore, landscape architects have developed ways to gain understanding of place and its natural and cultural environment. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area in China where Australian landscape architects played key roles showed their genuine engagement with place through intensive site investigations and close interaction with local governmental clients. It also showed their difficulties in gaining implicit knowledge of this area, because their early and direct interaction with local landscape architects and communities was restricted by the commissioning process.

Abstract:The site of Xiling Seal Engraver's Society is a typical upland garden in the West Lake Scenic Area. It was praised as "the crown garden on the West Lake" by Mr. Chen Congzhou for its unique surroundings, appropriate layout, wonderful spatial organization and deep artistic conception. This paper attempts to conduct a systematic study on the spatial organization of the site of Xiling Seal Engraver's Society, by combing its spatial composition relationship, analyzing its spatial layout, exploring its spatial sequence, and explaining the spatial structure for landscape spots as well. The analysis showed the marvellous skills for spatial organization of classical upland gardens, which provides a reference for space design of modern upland or mountain gardens.

Abstract:By investigating the Hubiancun Historical Blocks in Hangzhou,this paper analysed its spatial characteristics,place spirit,and the effects on the inhabitants' behavior and well-being.The spatial characteristics of Hubiancun Historical Blocks include distinction on spatial level,humanization on spatial scale and diversification on spatial form.Place spirit of Hubiancun Historical Blocks includes carrying the culture and identifiable and strong.The space of blocks could promote the sense of community identity and attachment.

Abstract:Design attributes of famous historic and cultural sites were analyzed,and problems in the present planning and design of these relics were proposed on the basis of fully studying characteristics of outdoor sightseeing and relaxation spaces in famous historic and cultural sites such as disordered route,lack of cultural context and overuse of design formalism.Taiqing Scenic Area in the Mount Laoshan was taken for example to explore design techniques of famous historic and cultural sites.It was stressed that history should be respected,cultural context continued;development properly designed,favorable ecological conditions created;tour routes reasonably designed,tourists' feelings valued;aesthetic principles should be followed,and beauty of scenery depends on moods of viewers.This study was to make the future design of famous historic and cultural sites practical.

Abstract:The construction of historical and cultural blocks in ancient cities is a new direction for the development of tourism in historical and cultural cities. As the core of the famous historical and cultural city of Zhangzhou and an important window of the city's image, the ancient city of Zhangzhou plays a decisive role in the development of Zhangzhou. This article is based on the theoretical study of Kevin Lynch's "Image of the City", and analyzes the spatial form of the ancient city of Zhangzhou from the material form (roads, boundaries, areas, nodes and landmarks) and spiritual form (specialty snacks, traditional operas, handicrafts) ), conducting a study on the individual characteristics and overlapping characteristics of the image elements, revealing that the image elements of Zhangzhou ancient city need to coordinate with each other to ensure the integrity and distinctiveness of the ancient city's characteristics, promote the sustainable development of the ancient city's spatial form, and have an impact on the overall spatial system and human environment of the ancient city.

Abstract:The authors apply the concept of “territory”, “place” and “route ” to analyze the spatial structure of Lijiang City, a famous Chinese historical city of Naxi minority, which was listed as one of the World Heritage cities in 1997. The spatial structure of Lijiang City has a character of duality. Spiritua l territory and living territory, festal place and routine place, man-made rou te and natural route, all exist simultaneously as twin-spaces. The li ving space of Lijiang City becomes a spatial complex of various elements. In th is spatial complex, the daily places are ritualized and bear various cult ural meanings through the interaction of multiple elements at different levels, a nd the seemingly trivial place exhibit dramatic cultural sceneries. The ritualiz ed space is therefore one of the most attractive “cultural landscapes” in Chin ese historical cities, which demands more conservational consideration.

Abstract:In the stock era, with the decentralization of planning rights and the awakening of public awareness, the value orientation of the protection and renewal of historical and cultural blocks has gradually changed from a single restoration of physical space to the creation of a sense of place. Abstract:Sense of place,place attachment and place identity have become the important hotspots in cultural geography studies.However,there is no consensus on how one should define these concepts and meanwhile the relations between them remain unclear yet.In view of this,this paper reviewed the relevant literatures to make clear the meaning of these concepts and the relations between them.The followings are the main points of view:Firstly,sense of place is a dynamic and inclusive concept which includes two dimensions of place attachment and place identity.Secondly,place attachment and place identity are two related but different with their own unique contents which should be differentiated effectively in future studies.And thirdly,place attachment has influence on place identity and both of them will help build sense of place.Finally,the paper points out that future research should:highlight the uniqueness of place itself in concept construction,make use of diverse research methods,distinguish spatial scales of sense of place,and emphasize the dynamic point of view in study of sense of place.
