Abstract:Soundscape is a new interdisciplinary field of landscape and acoustics. This paper is intended to study the relationship between soundscape and culture. That is, the Chinese culture's pursuit of acoustic beauty from three aspects as poetries, writings and drawings. It is demonstrated by the case study of soundscape in West Lake scenic area, with particular emphasis on humane attribute. The study has approached by three steps as classification - case study - promotion to region. The major attractions of West Lake scenic area is divided into natural and artificial categories, and the typical cases selected are Orioles Singing in the Willows and Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping hill. The two cases are analyzed from two aspects as the cultural background and humanities artistic conception, in order to prove the subject. And the importance of soundscape culture research to the construction of West Lake scenic area is declared further.

Abstract:The 21st century can be regarded as an "urban" century. With the rapid development of China's urbanization process, cities have gradually lost their uniqueness because of the tendency to construct cities using similar design principles. In this article, traditional Chinese culture is advocated, (especially Qian Xuesen's Shan-shui City concept), and explained from three aspects: the Natural State, the Picturesque State and the Ideal State. Based on these concepts, the paper advocates the Holistic Design approach and collaboration with other design disciplines. Three city scale projects -Beijing Olympic park, Tiding Fanhe New City and Tangshan Nanhu Eco-city - put this "Shan-shui City" concept into practice.

Abstract:Apart from being a residential place, the village in the scenic area is also part of the scenery.Consequently, it substantially differs from ordinary villages in spatial organization, economic structure, social relation, etc.By examining Longjing Village which is located in the West Lake Scenic Area in Hangzhou, this paper tends to analyze the evolution features in terms of land use, construction space, transport facilities, and social network.The paper also summarizes the contradictions between "village" and "scenery", and proposes the strategies that are aimed at the re-harmonization of "village" and "scenery", in the hope of facilitating the coordinated spatial development of the village and the West Lake Scenic Area and providing reference for the preservation and development of other residential communities in scenic areas.

Abstract:Nature and culture will never be separated. With the rapid development of our country’s economy and fast increase in the rate of urbanization, problems such as imbalances of natural ecology and environmental pollution have also emerged, which resulted in contextual dislocation and confusions in cultural orientation. It has become a dififcult task for us to restore the damaged environment while strengthening the unique cultural soft power of the environment itself, preserving the civic texture and trajectory, and seeking for a sustainable development of urban landscape’s culture and ecology. With the case study of Xiaotanzi Waterfront Park Landscape in Inner Mongolia, this paper not only states the means of ecological restoration from the aspects of soil, water and vegetation, but also explains how to combine ecological restoration with culture reconstruction through different uses of a location, combination of landscape forms, and exploring the sustainability both naturally and culturally.

Abstract:Urban quality improvement and the construction and management of high-quality beautiful cities have been considered a prioritized initiative across China. Beautiful cities are built on the harmony and symbiosis between human and the nature. This only route to sustainable development consists of three dimensions: 1) the deep structure of the beautiful city, i.e. a good site selection that realizes an interwoven pattern between urban matrix and natural ecological network, which could be reflected in spatial configurations of both “the city in nature” and “the nature in the city”; 2) the deep appearance and style of the beautiful city, deriving from the natural topography, process, and climatic conditions to guarantee the ecological adaptation to the nature; and 3) the green lifestyle of the beautiful city, which guides citizens to green living, green traveling, and green consumption so as to reserve sufficient development space for generations. This is the “trio” of beautiful cities. Drawing lessons from the conflicts with the nature in the past civilizations, the ecological civilization is the only way to achieve the human-nature harmony.

Abstract:As the scarce mountain scenery in Shanghai suburbs,Chenshan Hill's human history can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty.Since the twentieth century,the quarrying operations have made it a waste land.Now,with the new botanical garden construction,this landscape has the opportunity to be reshaped and ecologically restored.It is the environmental ethic and design philosophy that to identify the site's complicated information layer system,to judge the value of the abandoned land,to respect the objective historical consequence and to continue its development course.With technology development,the design wisely adopted the minimum intervention strategy to transform and reconstruct the site information layer system,so that to achieve multiple transformation goals,to update people's cognition on the fourth nature,and to establish a new harmonious relationship between human and nature.

Abstract:Abstract: An urban cultural park is a symbol of regional urban culture, and it also reflects the accumulation of human culture. It can become an important way to inherit regional historical and cultural heritage and promote the excellent traditional Chinese cultural spirit. The cultural role, played by the cultural parks, is, however, rather unsatisfactory and remains to be improved. It is extremely important to solve these problems and promote the design of urban cultural parks to better showcase their cultural ideas and meet the needs of cultural dissemination and development. Therefore, this article introduced mountain factors and analyzed the symbolic significance of mountain factors in the design of urban cultural parks. This research attempted to interpret the ideas, contained in modern urban cultural parks, from the perspectives of urban cultural parks and mountain factors, and elaborated on the design strategies, expression methods, expression techniques and exchange of ideas of urban cultural parks. Research has found that introducing mountain factors into the design of cultural parks can make them more aesthetically pleasing, with more complex shapes, and better highlight the theme ideas for regional cultural interpretation and expression. This research provides more design schemes and elements for the design of urban cultural parks by studying mountain factors, enriching the ideological meaning and expression of urban cultural parks, helping to promote the inheritance and development of culture, and providing more theoretical basis for landscape design.

Abstract:Nowadays the fast urban sprawl in China has generated huge pressures on conserving the cultural heritages and historic city characteristics.This paper provides the Mountain-Water-City holistic pattern and illustrates the concept of Mountain-Water-City in cultural,functional and aesthetics dimensions,all of which have been widely adopted in traditional Chinese urban planning history for thousands of years.Based on the multi-dimensional Mountain-Water-City spatial unit,it proposes the strategies of historic-cultural environment protection and development at three spatial levels:to establish the artistic structure at the regional level,to maintain and refine the scenery system at the city level,and to create the spirit of place at the site level.

Abstract:Traditional culture is a culture formed by a nation in the process of civilization evolution, which can reflect the national characteristics and ideological style, and is the overall expression of the Chinese people's thoughts, feelings, ideological forms and aesthetic concepts. It emphasizes the close connection between humans and nature and advocates seeking a balance of harmony between heaven, man, and nature. This concept has significant implications for contemporary urban landscape planning. Faced with the challenges of "uniformity in a thousand cities" and "standardized development" in urban construction, it is crucial to incorporate this philosophical thinking into the design process.
