Abstract:Owing to the harsh natural conditions and complex geology at the site of the Pingtan Straits Rail‐cum‐Road Bridge ,the foundations of the bridge were decided to be constructed by the scheme of the construction platforms by the aid of the long trestle so that the construction of the foundations over the sea could be shifted onto the trestle and platforms .In regard of the design dif‐ficulties of the trestle ,the load combination and design principles for the trestle were formulated and the structure of the trestle was hence designed according to the different water depth and geo‐logical conditions .The trestle is totally 7 .49 km long and 8 .5 m wide .In the area of the water depth ≤35 m ,the foundations of the trestle are the steel pipe piles w hile in the area of the 35 m<water depth≤45 m ,the foundations are the structures of the "jackets+ support piles".For the trestle over the area of the water depth ≤18 m ,the span arrangement of the trestle is 9 m+15 m , the superstructure of the part of the trestle is the Bailey truss and the diameters of the steel pipe pipes are 1 .2 m .For the trestle over the area of the water depth >18 m ,the span arrangement of the trestle is 12 m+32 (28) m or 12 m+36 m .The superstructure of the part of the trestle is the T russ No .1 used for the permanent bridge and the diameters of the steel pipe pipes are 1 .5 ,2 and 2 .4 m .To provide solution to the durability of the trestle in the marine environment ,the corrosion protection of the combined sacrificial protection layers of the steel pipe pile walls and the exterior coating of the piles was designed .

Abstract:The difficulties in the construction of Pingtan strait hi-rail bridge come from its large scale, long life cycle, diverse ocean environment with deep water, strong wind, exposed granite and heavy sea water corrosion. In view of the different geological conditions and water depth, detailed classification of trestle bridge is employed and researches and analyses are conducted to define design parameters so as to provide references for the design of the substructure of such trestle bridges in similar water areas.

Abstract:Due to ageing of the bridge stock, continuously increasing load requirements, the need for assessing existing bridges is becoming increasingly important. Reinforced concrete (RC) bridge deck slabs are among the most critical parts to the load carrying capacity of bridges. Previous research indicated that the assessment method used in current practice largely underestimate the load-carrying capacity. The objective of the study reported in this licentiate thesis is to develop and calibrate improved methods for assessment of load-carrying capacity and response of existing bridge deck slabs. This study proposes an enhanced assessment through improved structural analysis and resistance evaluation in order to achieve higher detectable load-carrying capacity. To achieve this objective, the scientific approaches including literature study, laboratory tests, analytical analyses and finite element analyses were adopted. Two major studies and a series with supporting tests were conducted as following: A large test series, in which three specimens containing traditional steel bar reinforcement in ordinary concrete, were carried out to study the load carrying capacity and structural behavior of two-way slab. A proposed multi-level assessment method was validated through two case studies: a two-way slab and a cantilever slab. The multi-level assessment method includes simplified analysis, 3D linear FE analysis, 3D nonlinear analysis with shell elements, 3D nonlinear FE analysis with continuum elements include fully bonded reinforcement as well as 3D nonlinear FE analysis with continuum elements including bond-slip for the reinforcement. To develop the modeling strategies for two-way RC slabs with continuum elements, parameter studies has been carried out to investigate the influence of different modeling choices. Parameters including finite element properties, modeling of concrete, modeling of reinforcement and stiffness of supports were varied in different comparative models to investigate the influence. The study shows that existing methods currently used in assessment are not able to accurately reflect the response of RC bridge deck slabs, and underestimate their capacity. With enhanced assessment methods, such as the nonlinear finite element method, it is possible to better reflect the structural behavior, and more accurately determine the load carrying capacity. Two case studies have proven that the multi-level assessment method is able to reflect the structural behavior at different levels of approximation, which is beneficial in evaluating existing RC slabs. The parameter studies indicate that modeling choices such as geometric nonlinearity, crack bandwidth and Poisson’s ratio have significant impact on determination of the load-carrying capacity. Finite element properties, reinforcement model and stiffness of supports influence crack pattern and load distribution respectively.

Abstract:Multi-beam box girder bridges have been applied widely throughout the world for many years. However, the cracking of longitudinal joints between the box girders always leads to reflective cracking of the bridge decks during the service period and thus finally affects the safety and durability of the actual bridges. An embedded steel plate (ESP) strengthening method was presented by introducing carbon-A/-B glue to reinforce the longitudinal joints of old multi-beam box girder bridges for this problem. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method for actual bridges, an old multi-beam box girder bridge was reinforced, and structural parameters including strain, frequency, and deflection were obtained by adopting field tests before and after strengthening. In addition, the corresponding finite element (FE) model of the background bridge was also set up using ANASYS 18.0 to analyze the strengthening process. Analysis results of the actual bridge and FE model indicate that structural stiffness and load lateral transferring performance between the box girders were enhanced after ESP strengthening. Therefore, this proposed strengthening method can be used to improve the mechanical performance of multi-beam box girder bridges and provide reference for such bridge reinforcement.

Abstract:By combination of the 3-D finite element method with the response surface method, a reliability analysis is made of the structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type prestressed aqueduct, which has been widely used in the South-to-North Water Transfer Middle Route Project. The result shows that the reliability of the aqueduct structure meets the design requirement, and that the response surface method is an effective method for reliability analysis of the aqueduct structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type.

Abstract:T he main bridge of Zhicheng Changjiang River Bridge is a rail‐cum‐road continuous steel truss girder bridge with span arrangement of (4 × 160+5 × 128) m .The steel truss girder of the main bridge adopts the type of steel truss like Chinese character “米” .After serving for more than 40 years ,the gusset plates at the adjustable stringers w hich connect the vertical tensile plates in the main railway bridge have cracks (a total of 4 locations with cracks) .To ensure the bridge structure and the train riding safety ,based on the analysis of the fracture deterioration of the gus‐set plates at the adjustable stringers ,and on the premise that the railway transportation safety is ensured ,the failed gusset plates ,angle steel and tensile plates were replaced .The replacing tech‐nique for the gusset plates starts from the removal of the connecting bolts and the demolition of the connecting chords and plates of the original gusset plates (dismantling the subsidiary connecting chords first and the main connecting chords later) .Then ,the contact surfaces of the original con‐necting holes and the chords were treated .The installation of the new chords follows the reversed procedure of the demolition (installing the main connecting chords and gusset plates first and the subsidiary gusset plates later) .The results of the structural analysis indicate that the overall load bearing capacity of the adjustable stringers is strengthened ,which can meet the demands of the contraction and extension deformation of the railway bridge .The replacements of the components were carried out during the railway maintenance duration ,and the whole construction exerts no in‐fluence on the safety of the railways in service .

Abstract:According to the research progress of the mechanical behaviour of the corrosion reinforced concrete elements at home and abroad,experimental methods for studying the mechanical behaviour of the corrosion reinforced concrete element,have been analysed.Models of the load carrying capacity of the corrosion reinforced concrete element with different kinds of mechanical behaviour have been concluded.Merits,drawbacks and the applicability of these models have also been discussed.At last,prospects and the suggestions of the research in mechanical behaviour of the corrosion reinforced concrete elements have been given according to the existed questions.

Abstract:This paper emphatically analyzes some existing problems in planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of concrete arch bridges, including insufficient load bearing capacity caused by uneven settlement of bridge piers, horizontal displacement, change of temperature, overload, lower design load level in original bridge design, and poor durability and performance degradation of concrete structures caused by chloride permeability, steel bar corrosion, carbonization, cover spalling of concrete, aging cracking at the PE protective layer of suspenders, rain leakage, and corrosion of concrete arches etc. From the safety, applicability, durability, economy, environmental protection, and sustainability considerations in life cycle of bridges, the appropriate maintenance strategies and methods of arch bridges are explored for the different objectives and performance levels. It has certain theoretical significance and practical engineering value. Path probability model of corrosion-crack assessment for existing reinforced concrete structures

Abstract:For the status that corrosion of reinforcement, indetectable corrosion degree and corrosion-induced crack of existing concrete structures in chloride-laden environment, a path probability model (PPM) to predict the stochastic corrosion-crack development of reinforced concrete (RC) structures with time was proposed. The time-dependent probability distribution of steel corrosion ratio, crack width of concrete due to corrosion and percentage of corroded steel samples of elements were estimated effectively on a series of random paths of corrosion-crack process simulated by computer programme. The substructure of an RC bridge in chloride-laden environment was illustrated to verify the precise and effectiveness of the present model by the assessment result of field inspection data. The model can effectively predict the durability behavior of existing concrete structures and the predicted result is a reasonable proof for optimal strategies of maintenance and repair.

Abstract:Main types of the pier,abutment and foundation in substructure of RC or PC bridges in China were summarized respectively.It was pointed out that the main diseases in substructure of concrete bridges were differential settlement of foundations,insufficient carrying capacity,durability diseases of reinforced concrete,cracking of concrete pier columns,bent caps and abutments etc..In allusion to the concrete pier,abutment and foundation,the causes and mechanisms of these diseases were analyzed from the design,construction,maintenance and operation of bridges.The relevant maintenance and strengthening methods were also discussed,such as the foundation enlargement method,adding pile method and artificial foundation reinforcement method for concrete and RC pier or abutment foundation;the method of RC columns reinforced by reinforced concrete hoop or FRP for piers,the reinforcement method of pasting steel strips or plates,the method of external prestressed reinforcement and additional support method,etc.for RC bent caps;the method of reducing load,the method of reducing filling height by adding approach spans,the support beam method and the reinforcement method of installing auxiliary retaining wall,etc.for RC abutments.

Abstract:Ancient timber arch lounge bridges are precious cultural heritages in China. The woven arch is the main load-bearing structure of the timber arch lounge bridges, and repairing the woven arch is a very important work in the protection of the ancient timber arch lounge bridges, yet there are few studies on the repair methods. This paper proposes a non-dismantling repair method for the woven arch to meet the repair principle of cultural relics, with minimal repair and minimal interference. This method can be used to replace a small number of the components individually. A strengthened spliced log with a lap joint is used to replace the damaged longitudinal log of the woven arch without dismantling the entire structure. Large-scale model experiments and finite element analyses were performed in this paper to study the effects of the repair method on the woven arch. Deflection and force distribution changes of the woven arch caused by the replacement of the longitudinal logs of the woven arch were studied. The results of finite element analyses are in good agreement with the experimental results. The results show that, under dead load, dismantling a longitudinal log of the woven arch has little interference with the deflection. After dismantling a member of the woven arch, the axial force of the dismantled member will transfer to the adjacent members in the same system. The bearing capacity of the repaired woven arch is comparable to the intact woven arch.

Abstract:In this paper, the typical deterioration of Northern Approach of Binzhou Yellow River Bridge is reviewed and the method of strengthening is proposed. Based on the theory of grillage method, T-beam grillage is modeled using finite element analysis software Midas civil to study the dynamic behavior of North approach’s superstructure after strengthening. Concerns about integrity of the carrying capacity and overall safety of the bridge are raised. Load simulation tests were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the method and investigate its effect on structural behavior. And the results indicated that the bridge after strengthening could meet the demanding of intensity and rigidity.

Abstract:Aggressive environmental conditions and ever-increasing traffic loading contribute to the progressive deterioration,increase the deflection and decrease the capacity of bridge structures over their lifetime.Therefore,maintenance and repair methods should be implied for the requirement of service security.The traffic overload was simulated by static load test,the rebar corrosion was generated by Galvan static method,and the carbon fiber reinforced polymer was used to strengthen these damaged bridge members.Then the BOTDA was adopted to monitor the strain changes in the experiment.The reinforcement effect of CFRP was evaluated by comparing the deflection,crack pattern and strain under various stages.The experimental investigation indicates that damages caused by different factors affect the reinforcement efficiency in different ways.Traffic overload,which causes a comparable large deflection,leads to self-evident interoperability reduction of the strengthened bridge member.The fiber optical sensors embedded in bridge members can monitor the structure performance reliably and stably under traffic overload and erosion environment condition,and it is proved that BOTDA has extensive prospect for monitoring the smart bridge and structures.

Abstract:Application of orthotropic steel bridge decks has become increasingly widespread, but with the growing traffic, the bridge decks frequently get fatigue damage, even forming cracks. This paper makes an overall analysis on the orthotropic steel bridge decks cracks of a certain bridge in Southern China, and experimentally studies on both in-situ and new strengthening materials, including low temperature impact toughness, conventional mechanical properties and fatigue performance. Test conclusions indicate that the two materials have good performance, which means the cracks have no business of in-situ materials, and the strengthening materials can be put into use.

Abstract:Abstract A three-dimensional finite element model of a steel truss bridge is established, and the stress distribution under dead loads is investigated. Then the most cracked cross-beam is modelled into solid elements, whose bearing capacity are investigated before and after being strengthened respectively, and the effectiveness of strengthening is estimated by static analysis. The joint with a crack whose size and location come from the site inspection is modelled, and the J integral, the stress intensity factor and the crack growth rate are estimated under specified load, lastly the fatigue performance are compared between the model before strengthening and that of after strengthening. The results show that the bearing capacity of the strengthened joint is greatly enhanced, the local stress concentration and deformation are significantly reduced, and the stress distribution become more reasonable, which prove that the fatigue performance is greatly improved, and the strengthening work achieved its design goal.

Abstract:The deteriorations in the continuous composite arch bridge are introduced firstly. And the structural analysis model is established by finite element method. The positions of dangerous sections are obtained easily by calculating analysis. The rehabilitation scheme, in which the steel tube piles are adopted in each span and the cross beams are strengthened by plastering steel plates, is proposed based on analysis results. Many advantages of the rehabilitation scheme can be presented, such as advanced technology, construction shortcut, excellent performance, and so on. The rehabilitation scheme is proved feasible and reasonable. Copyright ASCE 2009.
