Abstract:Biomass gasification is a common technology of converting biomass into energy.The tar produced in the process ofbiomass gasification not only leads to equipment corrosion,pipeline blockage and secondary pollution,but also reduces the efficiency of biomass gasification.The classification,potential hazard and treatment methods of biomass tar are reviewed in this paper,with a focus on the recent research progress of catalytic cracking and plasma treatment methods.The advantages and disadvantages of different methods were compared.Physical method has the advantages of simple devices and easy operation,but the energy is not fully utilized and the secondary pollution exists.Thermal cracking can convert tar into gas and increase the energy of the produced gas,however,the process needs high temperature and cost.Having the lower temperature than thermal cracking,the catalytic cracking is the most active field in tar treatment,but the catalysts have the disadvantages of poor stability,easy deactivation,high cost etc.Plasma methods include cold plasma method and thermal plasma method,which are newly developed treatment methods of biomass tar in recent years.Possessing the characteristics of high temperature,high enthalpy and high electron density,the thermal plasma method provides new opportunity for the development of biomass tar processing technology.

Abstract:Biomass gasification is a commonly used means of biomass conversion.The inevitable by-product tar in gasification process has great harm.Beginning with the introduction of biomass gasification technology principles,devices and processes,the production,characteristics,influencing factors and harmfulness of tar during gasification process have discussed.The physical purification methods of gasification gas tar,such as cyclone-separation,wet cleaning and dry cleaning,are discussed.The chemical conversion methods of high-temperature pyrolysis and catalytic cracking are compared.The advantages,disadvantages and application of different methods are pointed out.How to control and optimize biomass gasification process,take appropriate tar removal technology,have become an important research direction for biomass gasification technologies.

Abstract:This research focused on the reaction features and kinetics of tar catalytic conversion by char based on the generation and evolution of gas products. To probe the roles of heat and catalysis in tar conversion, a micro fluidized bed reaction analyzer (MFBRA) was used to assess tar thermal cracking (TC) and catalytic cracking (CC) by char at 1073, 1123, 1173, and 1223 K. The tar cracking behavior of the individual gas components (H 2 , CO, CO 2 , and CH 4 ), generation rates, and reaction kinetics were thoroughly investigated. The results show that TC and CC included a fast (Stage-1) and slow (Stage-2) conversion stage, in which Stage-1 contributed more than 80% of the total conversion. Compared to TC, tar CC required a longer reaction time but obtained higher conversions to individual gas components and the total gas products. The final conversion ratios ( X CC/TC ) of H 2 , CO, CO 2 , and CH 4 were kept above 1 at the tested temperature. The char catalytic action was very remarkable, especially at low temperatures. In tar CC, the generation rate of individual gas components slowly declined after quickly reaching the peak, forming a relatively stable zone. The volume reaction model (VRM) well described the tar conversion behavior with and without char. Compared to TC, char lowered the activation energy ( Ea ) of gas generation. For individual gas components (H 2 , CO, CO 2 , CH 4 ) and the total gas products, the corresponding reduction degree of Ea was 25.56%, 24.18%, 22.14%, 4.75%, and 21.71%, respectively, further displaying the promoting impact of char. The evaluated generation features and kinetics of individual components in the gas products will benefit the in-situ tar removal in the biomass gasification process.

Abstract:The experimental study on catalytic cracking of tar pyrolyzed from biomass on gas component is made, three kinds of catalysts including SiC, Al_2O_3 and MgCO_3, are used at different temperatures. It is found that all these catalysts can accelerate the conversion of tar into combustible components, reduce effectively the content of tar, and change gas component. The test results are analyzed.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate thermal and catalytic cracking characteristics of tar derived from biomass pyrolysis and gasification. The main part of the test rig is combined by a biomass pyrolysis reactor of atmospheric bubbling fluidized bed and a tar cracking reactor of fixed bed, both of them being heated electrically. Maize straw was used as the biomass feedstock in the test, and fluidized by nitrogen in the pyrolysis reactor. Calcinated limestone and dolomite as well as the regenerative dolime were choosen as the catalysts in the cracking reactor. When temperatures of fixed bed reactor are controlled between 800℃ and 850℃, with calcined dolomite and limestone tar, conversion can be higher than 90%. Calcined limestone showed higher activity and deactivity rate during the reaction than dolomite.

Abstract:Tar from biomass gasification process is harmful to the gasification system and gas consuming equipment. For the development of tar removal method suitable to be applied in industrial use, it is necessary to seek out the optimal operating condition for tar cracking process. On a fixed-bed reactor, catalytic cracking of tar from pyrolysis of biomass, including rice straw, rice husk and wood chip, was investigated using limestone, dolomite and alumina brick as catalysts, and silicon carbide as an inert catalyst for thermal cracking. The effects of different catalysts on the variation of tar content in the gas, the gas composition and heating value, were investigated. Several factors that may influence the efficiency of the tar cracking process were studied for better catalytic effect. It reveals that tar removal efficiency rises with the cracking temperature from 600 to 900℃, reaching 60 percent in thermal cracking and above 90 percent in catalytic cracking at 900℃. When the gas residence time rises from 0.5 to 1 second, the tar removal efficiency increases about 7 to 10 percent. The gas composition changes greatly after the cracking process, with the gas heating value increased after thermal cracking and decreased after catalytic cracking.

Abstract:Biomass tar is still the bottleneck in biomass thermochemical conversion technology. The progress of tar reduction method is concluded, and the main characteristics of all methods are analyzed, which includes partial combustion and plasma techniques that have paid less attention to recently, as well as a description of relevant experiments and art technology. In conclusion, each method is evaluated comprehensively and their next research direction is pointed out respectively.

Abstract:The utilization of tar in the process of biomass gasification reburning was investigated. The tar components released during the pyrolysis and gasification of typical agricultural wastes were analyzed on the TG-MS (thermogravimetry and mass spectrometry) system. And the effect of tar on the NO reduction by biomass gasification syngas was studied on a flow reaction system, as well as the effect of the parameters such as bulk equivalence ratio and temperature. Finally, the model of NO reduction by toluene was built, and verified by the results from the stop-flow reaction system. The results show that benzene, toluene, styrene and phenol are typical components of tar. Tar has a positive influence on the NO reduction by biomass syngas, and there's a suitable environment, including bulk equivalence ratio, temperature and so on, that makes the reduction most efficient. The polymerization should be concerned. The NRT (NO reduction by toluene) model simulates the experimental results well, and HCCO and C2H seem to be important to the NO reduction. © 2010 Chin. Abstract:Bio-char and bio-oil have a potential to be used for gas cleaning in biomass pyrolysis/gasification. On one hand, tar in producer gas could be removed by physical treatment, such as oil absorption and char adsorption; on the other hand, tar could be eliminated by chemical treatment, such as catalytic conversion over char-supported catalysts. This paper reviewed the recent progress in gas cleaning especially for tar removal during biomass pyrolysis/gasification by using the by-products (i.e. bio-char, bio-oil, low-viscosity tar). In general, bio-char could effectively adsorb the light tar compounds such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while bio-oil is normally benefit for the absorption of heavy tars. Additionally, catalytic reforming is considered as one of the promising alternatives for the removal of tars, because it converts the tars into the additional gas products. Bio-char could be used as a carbon catalyst or support with fair performance in tar removal. It is noteworthy that the char-supported catalysts could be gasified to recover energy of char without the need of frequent regeneration after deactivation. Furthermore, the carbon-based catalysts derived from bio-chars could be urgently developed for the removal of contaminants including NH3, H2S and tar simultaneously in the producer gas from the real biomass gasification processes.
Photothermal Steam Reforming: A Novel Method for Tar Elimination in Biomass Gasification

Abstract:Tar elimination is the bottleneck which hinders the industrial application of gasification due to the risks of corrosion and blockage in downstream components. Tar production decreases the energy efficiency of gasification systems. The steam reforming is attractive for tar treatment, but the high reaction temperature limits its applications. Photothermal catalysis has the potential to decompose organic pollutants, and it is expected to improve tar removal and reduce the reaction temperature. So, the photothermal steam reforming of toluene was performed to evaluate the toluene conversion. The effects of the toluene concentration, the temperature, the steam to carbon ratio, and the ultraviolet light intensity were investigated. The results showed that, compared with the thermal steam reforming, the photothermal steam reforming could significantly improve the conversion of toluene and promote the formation of gaseous products, especially H-2. At 600 degrees C, the conversion of toluene in the photothermal steam reforming was 90.1%, which was 16.3% higher than that in the thermal steam reforming. Moreover, the mechanisms of the photothermal steam reforming were revealed. The introduction of the ultraviolet irradiation could strongly promote the toluene decomposition and alter the reaction pathways. The carbon deposition and agglomeration of the catalyst were inhibited in photothermal steam reforming. Meanwhile, the toluene removal performance and the energy consumption were compared in photothermal and thermal steam reforming. The potential applications of photothermal catalytic tar removal were also described. These findings proposed a novel approach for low-cost but high-efficiency biomass tar removal, thus promoting the clean utilization of biomass energy.

Abstract:Tar in gas product from biomass gasification would block the downstream equipments and affact the gasifier operating.It is important to understand the tar evolving and cracking behavior in the fluidized bed gasifier.With peanut shell,rice straw and saw dust as raw materials,the gasification was carried out in a pilot scale fluidized bed gasifier at variant temperatures(750 ℃～850 ℃),air equivalence ratio(0.15～0.35) and catalyst addition.Simultaneously,tar component was analyzed using gas chromatograph with mass selective detector(GC-MS).It is observed that the tar content decreases obviously with temperature increasing,and the catalyst addition also displays a similar result,which is attributed to the cracking of heavy components in tar.Higher temperature and catalyst are effective for the controlling and removing of tar during biomass gasification.
Catalytic conversion of gaseous tars using land, coastal and marine biomass-derived char catalysts in a bench-scale downstream combined fixed bed system

Abstract:The catalytic activity of biochar for tar removal was evaluated in a bench-scale combined fixed bed reactor by comparison of gaseous tar catalytic cracking behaviors over land (Corn stalks, Cs), coastal (Reed, Re) and marine (Sargassum horneri, Sh) char catalyst. The experiments demonstrated that the tar yield after addition of the biochar was reduced significantly; the tar conversion efficiency reached to 94.6% for catalytic at 850 °C with 50 mm char bed length using Re char. And the yield and composition of gas also changed markedly. The percentage of H2 and CO in the product gas were obviously increased. Sh has a higher H2 content (49.3% of the total gas content), whereas, CO dominated in the gas products for Cs (45.4%) and Re (48.1%). The results from GC-MS analysis illustrated that the increase in temperature promoted the tar cracking and also promotes the polymerization of some tar components.

Abstract:In present work,results of investigations on production and classification of tar during biomass gasification process were summarized. The quantity and composition of tar produced by different types of gasifier were compared,and the effects of temperature and oxygen were gained as well.The classification of tar as primary,secondary and tertiary components is widely accepted and applied.For different types of gasifier,the quantity of tar produced varies:updraft(a level of 100 g/m~3)>fluid bed(a level of 10g/m~3)>downdraft(a level of 1g/m ~3).And improved types,like two-stage gasifier,have advantage in tar control.Primary tars are found to be the main part in updraft gasifiers, while in a downdraft gasifier it is tertiary components like non-substituent PAHs.As for fluid bed gasifiers,the syngas contains both the secondary and tertiary components.With the rise of temperature,tar decreases and tends to convert to tertiary components with more stable chemical structure.Oxygen is found to have inhibiting effect on tar formation.

Abstract:Biomass energy, as a renewable energy, has attracted more and more attention. Biomass energy has an important significance for the future sustainable development of the world's energy. Biomass gasification technology is one of the most effective biomass energy conversion methods which can well translate the biomass into the efficient fuel gas. However, the development of this technology is limited by biomass tar which is produced during the gasification process. The removal methods of tar in the biomass gasification process were summarized, and four kinds of catalysts applied in the process of catalytic cracking were mainly introduced and further classifies discussion was made on the composition, catalytic mechanism and modified optimization way of four kinds of catalysts, and the effects of different cracking condition on the catalytic result. The results showed an outlook for the development of biomass gasification technology and proposes future research emphasis of catalytic cracking.
Catalytic Pyrolysis of Tar Model Compound with Various Bio-Char Catalysts to Recycle Char from Biomass Pyrolysis

Abstract:Tar and char can be regarded as unwanted byproducts during the gasification process. In this study, three types of catalyst, i.e., biomass char (bio-char), nickel supported on biomass (Ni+bio-char), and nickel supported on bio-char (bio-char+Ni), were studied to compare the catalytic effects of different preparation methods on tar model compound removal. The structural characteristics of the three catalysts were also investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods. The results revealed that Ni+bio-char catalyst showed much higher activity for the reformation of toluene (C7H8) as a tar model compound than the other two catalysts. Toluene could be completely converted to small gas molecules at a conversion rate of 99.92% at 800 °C, and the maximum yield of gas was 432 mL/(mL C7H8). In particular, the H2 and CH4 yields were 339 and 85 mL/(mL C7H8) at 850 °C, respectively. An N2 absorption-desorption experiment demonstrated that the specific surface area of Ni+bio-char was 32.87 times that of bio-char and 8.39 times that of bio-char+Ni. Moreover, metallic nickel (Ni0) particles could be generated in the carbon matrix of Ni+bio-char catalyst. SEM analysis confirmed that the Ni+bio-char catalyst had a more porous structure. Nickel supported on biomass might be a promising catalyst for tar reformation because of its excellent catalytic activities.

Abstract:Tar measurement and calculation is crucial for understanding the in-situ tar elimination and hydrogen-rich syngas production during the biomass gasification process. In this study, the method of evaluating tar production was proposed and studied on a two-stage fixed-bed reactor. Two different groups of oxidized and reduced oxygen carriers were investigated for comparison. The collected tar was tested on a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system. The types of the tar were all belonged to aromatic hydrocarbons. The H-2 composition in the syngas was over 34% in three reduced-OC conditions. The carbon percentage identified by the GC-MS was at the range of 93.75-95.05 wt%. The average carbon from the char combustion period was 2.85 mmol. The tar yield in the three oxidized-OC conditions was 43 +/- 22 mg/g, 53 +/- 11 mg/g, and 62 +/- 8 mg/g, respectively. The result indicated that the reduced OC had a catalytic effect for increasing the H-2 composition in syngas. On the other hand, the oxidized OC influenced the reactions by providing with lattice oxygen. The evaluation of the produced tar was beneficial for a further understanding of the mechanism for producing the H-2-rich syngas. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Steam Reforming of Tar Studied in Bench-Scale Experiments and Pilot-Scale Tests with Simulations

Abstract:The generation of tar is the major draw back of biomass gasification, which is a barrier on the road to clean energy. Steam reforming is a promising method to eliminate tar in the biomass gasification process, which have been shown in our pilot tests. In this paper, the steam reforming of tar is investigated in a bench-scale horizontal tube reactor with Chemkin simulation, and in a pilot-scale tar reformer with CFD simulation. A set of simplified reaction paths and kinetic data is developed from bench-scale work, which is applied in the CFD simulation to predict the detail process in pilot-scale tar reformer. The prediction of CFD simulation is in a good agreement with the data from pilot test. The results revealed that the tar in the reformer is mainly eliminated by the steam, not the oxygen injected in the reformer, and the reaction place is within the first 1 m of the length of the reformer, where the intermediates of the reaction is decomposed quickly. Our CFD simulation indicated that the design of reformer can be optimized to a much shorter length, saving investment and heat. Our work demonstrated a complete cycle from the study of mechanism in bench-scale work to the investigation in pilot scale.

Abstract:<p>Char catalytic conversion of tar at different temperatures was carried out on a laboratory-scale circulating fluidized bed to providing theoretical support for the removal of tar. Various modern detection techniques were used to analyze the gas, tar and char, such as the gas chromatograph, the specific surface area analyzer and the gas chromatograph mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The efficiency of tar conversion (ETC) could be effectively improved by the increasing temperature, while transformation characteristics of the organic compounds of the used tar also changed. When the temperature increased from 850 °C to 900 °C, the catalytic capability of char was improved, resulting a reducing of the heavy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (heavy PAH compounds) of the produced tar. When the temperature increased from 900 °C to 950 °C, the catalytic capability of char weakened, so the heavy PAH compounds increased, caused by the intensifying of tar thermal cracking. At the tested temperature (850-950 °C), the conversion of naphthalene, the most abundant organic compound in the used tar, has not been seem a significant change, showing a selectivity of the char catalyst.</p>

Abstract:Tar in the product gas of biomass gasifiers reduces the efficiency of gasification processes and causes fouling of system components and pipework. Therefore, an efficient tar conversion in the product gas is a key step of effective and reliable syngas production. One of the most promising approaches is the catalytic decomposition of the tar species combined with hot syngas cleaning. The catalyst must be able to convert tar components in the synthesis gas at temperatures of around 700 °C downstream of the gasifier without preheating. A Ni-based doped catalyst with high activity in tar conversion was developed and characterized in detail. An appropriate composition of transition metals was applied to minimize catalyst coking. Precious metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, or a combination of two of them) were added to the catalyst in small quantities. Depending on the hot gas cleaning system used, both transition metals and precious metals were co-impregnated on pellets or on a ceramic filter material. In the case of a pelletized-type catalyst, the hot gas cleaning system revealed a conversion above 80% for 70 and 110 h. The catalyst composed of Ni, Fe, and Cr oxides, promoted with Pt and impregnated on a ceramic fiber filter composed of Al2O3(44%)/SiO2(56%), was the most active catalyst for a compact cleaning system. This catalyst was catalytically active with a naphthalene conversion of around 93% over 95 h without catalyst deactivation.
