Abstract:A simple method has been developed to purify lithium (Li) from matrix elements in geological reference materials, using a single-column packed with AGMP-50 cation exchange resin, followed by high-precision Li isotope measurements by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). A series of tests, such as different types of resin, loading amount of Li, loading volumes, and various eluents, were conducted to ascertain the optimal conditions for Li purification and the effects of intensity, acidity, and presence of potential matrix elements on Li isotope measurements were also evaluated. In our experiment, Al and high-field-strength elements (HFSEs), such as Ti, Zr, and Hf, were eluted by 0.2 M HCl + 0.3 M HF, and 0.73 M HCl was used to separate Li from other matrix elements, such as Na. This method is suitable for processing large amount of Li (60–270 ng) and enabling a Li recovery of close to 100%, with effective removal of matrix elements such as Na and Ca. Besides, our method achieves low matrix interferences (e.g., Na/Li << 1 and Ca/Li << 1 for rock and seawater via a single-column procedure; Ca/Li < 2 for carbonate via a two-column procedure) and also uses small volume of eluents and is rapid (~5 h), enabling a total separation to be completed in ~0.5 d. Using this method, we report Li isotopic compositions of various geological reference materials, including igneous rocks, seawater, and carbonate. The Li isotopic compositions are consistent with the data published previously for the analyzed reference materials. As such, the reported method is ideally suited for Li separation from multiple types of geological samples prior to isotopic analysis.

Abstract:This study presented a chemical protocol for purification of calcium and magnesium from a single aliquot of biological and geological samples. The separation protocol was based on a two-step cation exchange chromatography using DGA resin and AG50W-X12 (200–400 mesh) resin. Calcium fraction was first collected using 0.25 mL of DGA resin, and Mg fraction was then collected using 0.5 mL of AG50W-X12 cation exchange resin. For Ca isotope analysis, the effect of acidity and concentration mismatch as well as the matrix effect were rigorously evaluated using the Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS with a wet-plasma mode. Based on repeated measurements on BHVO-2 and NIST SRM 1400, the long-term reproducibility was evaluated at 0.08‰ (2SD) for δ44/42Ca915a. The δ26Mg ratios of the analyzed reference materials varied from −1.22‰ to 0.03‰ with the external precision better than 0.11‰ (2SD). The robustness of the protocol has been validated by replicated analyses of biological and geological standards. Calcium and magnesium isotopic ratios of all reference materials measured in this study agreed well with previous data within uncertainties. Therefore, the proposed method can be used for simultaneous determination of Ca and Mg isotopic ratios from a single aliquot of biological and geological samples.

Abstract:Fe and Mg isotopes have increasingly served as combined proxies for geological processes. Fe and Mg isotope determination requires consuming different splits of samples and multi-column chromatographic purification to obtain pure Mg and Fe fractions in conventional chemical procedures, which is time-consuming and not suitable for rare and valuable samples. This study presents a novel and efficient chromatographic procedure to purify both Fe and Mg from geological matrices, using a single-column loaded with AGMP-50 resin, followed by precise measurements of Fe and Mg isotopes by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). In our experiment, the Fe fraction was first collected by 7 mL of a mixture of 0.2 M HCl and 0.5 M HF, and then the Mg fraction was collected using 9 mL of 1.3 M HCl. This procedure is suitable for processing different types of rock samples and enabling a Fe recovery of >98% and a full recovery for Mg, with effective removal of matrix elements such as Al, Ti, Na, K, Ca, and other trace elements. Using this method, Fe and Mg isotopic compositions of various geological reference materials were reported. All of the Fe and Mg isotopic analytical results were in agreement with the reported data within analytical uncertainties, verifying that the method established here is robust and reproducible. Thus, this procedure will serve as a great option for obtaining both Fe and Mg isotopic compositions of geological samples and tracing geochemical or astrochemical processes in the future.

Abstract:Samples with very high Ca/Mg ratios present challenges for measuring their Mg isotope ratios. Here, we present an efficient method to separate Mg from samples with high Ca/Mg matrices, which also allows for quantitative separation of Sr, Ca and K. The method comprises a three-step chromatographic separation using DGA and AG50W-X12 (200-400 mesh) cation exchange resin. By utilising the automated sample purification system prepFast MCTM for two of the three separations, the labour is substantially minimised. This analytical approach results in a quantitative Mg yield and a pure Mg solution, with other cations reduced to below the limit of detection (< 53 ng/mL). We demonstrate the efficacy of this method using a set of geochemical reference materials with Ca/Mg ratios ranging from 1.32 to 1282 mol mol -1 . This approach enhances sample throughput and ensures high-quality separations in carbonate samples characterised by high Ca/Mg ratios.

Abstract:With advances in analytical precision by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, K and Mg isotopes are increasingly used as a combined tool in tracing sources and processes in geoscientific research. However, reported methods in the literature require at least two column separation procedures during sample purification, which is time-consuming (at least two days). Therefore, a single column procedure could improve efficiencies, and these efforts are necessary to extend the combined application of K and Mg isotopes as geological tracers. In this study, a simple and time-efficient chromatographic procedure was reported, utilizing a single column for quantitative separation of both K and Mg from sample matrices for high-precision isotopic measurement of K and Mg. Using this novel method, the results for international geological standards agreed with published values, verifying the robustness of the procedure. The popularization of this optimized procedure would potentially extend the combined application of K and Mg isotopes in geological studies.
Precise magnesium isotope analyses of high-K and low-Mg rocks by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:This study presents a chemical protocol for the separation of Mg that is particularly adapted for diverse igneous rock samples, especially for high-K and low-Mg rocks. This protocol is based on a combination of three procedures: the removal of K from the samples using the precipitation procedure, followed by the separation of Fe and Ca using 2 mL of AG50W-X12 cation exchange resin, and finally the removal of Al, Ti, Na, and Fe elements using 0.5 mL of AG50W-X12 cation exchange resin. The effect of acidity and concentration mismatch as well as the matrix effect were rigorously evaluated using Nu Plasma II MCI-CP-MS with a wet plasma mode. The delta Mg-26 mean values of the GSB and Alfa Mg standard solutions are -2.05 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2 standard deviation (2s), n = 106) and -3.91 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2s, n = 51), respectively, which serve as in-house Mg standards in the State Key Laboratory of Continental Dynamics (SKLCD). The average delta Mg-26 value of one multi-elemental Mg standard GSB-1, made by adopting GSB with matrix elements, agrees well with the recommended value after precipitation and chromatographic separation. The long-term reproducibility, assessed by repeated measurements of Mg standard solutions and reference materials (RMs), is +/- 0.06 parts per thousand. The robustness of our method is further assessed by the replicated analyses of fifteen rock standards and olivine grains with large variations in MgO and K2O content.
An Efficient Li Dual-Column System and High-Precision Li Isotope Measurement of High Matrix and Low-Li Samples by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in using lithium (Li) isotopes in marine carbonates to trace chemical weathering and clay formation in the Earth's history. Yet it remains technically challenging to precisely and efficiently determine the Li isotope composition in carbonate samples due to the imperfect Li separation led by the matrix effect and the extremely low Li concentration in carbonates relative to the analytical threshold of sample size. For such high matrix and low-Li samples, here we present an efficient dual-column chromatography system for Li purification. The dual-column system has a large loading capacity, fixed Li elution range of merely 12 mL, complete Li recovery (>99.5%) and relatively efficient total elution time (7 hours). The procedural blank is 0.036 & PLUSMN; 0.002 ng accounting for sample dissolution and chemical purification, and the Na/Li mass ratio of the Li cut is below 0.5. High precision and accurate Li isotope measurement is performed efficiently with a small sample-sized protocol developed on a MC-ICP-MS (Neptune plus) connected with an APEX 2-IR desolvator. The whole procedure is validated by analyzing a series of certified reference materials. The long-term external precision of & delta;Li-7 determined based on L-SVEC and a high-purity Li solution is 0.6 & PTSTHOUSND; (2SD) and 0.9 & PTSTHOUSND; (2SD) for a minimum sample size of 7.5 ng.
High-precision Mg isotope analyses of low-Mg rocks by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:We present a method for precise measurement of Mg isotope ratios for low-Mg rock samples (where MgO <1wt.%) by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The efficiency of Mg purification is significantly improved by using a newly calibrated HNO3+HF step to remove undesired matrix elements (such as Ti, Al, Fe, and K) in low-Mg samples. We also establish that increasing the amount of Mg loaded to the chromatographic column minimized blank effects of organics leached from cation resin. All parameters that could affect the accuracy and precision of Mg isotope analyses were rigorously examined by two independent laboratories in Beijing and Hefei. The δ26Mg of mono-elemental Mg standard CAM-1 measured in the two laboratories were −2.597±0.042‰ (2σ, n=49) and −2.598±0.039‰ (2σ, n=79), respectively; in house standard IGGMg1 were −1.742±0.041‰ (2σ, n=53) and −1.749±0.049‰ (2σ, n=72), respectively. The average δ26Mg over ten months of two synthetic standards, made by doping IGGMg1 and IGGMg2 with matrix elements, agrees well with their recommended values, within error. The robustness of our method was further assessed by replicated analyses of sixteen rock standards with MgO contents from 0.28wt.% to 49.4wt.%. The δ26Mg of USGS rhyolite standards RGM-1 and RGM-2 are −0.188±0.031‰ (2σ, n=35) and −0.182±0.041‰ (2σ, n=72), respectively; granite standard GA is −0.165±0.038‰ (2σ, n=57), G-2 is −0.129±0.045‰ (2σ, n=34), GS-N is −0.204±0.059‰ (2σ, n=33), GSP-2 is 0.042±0.020‰ (2σ, n=15), and GSR-1 is −0.234±0.016‰ (2σ, n=17). Based on repeated analyses of standards, the long-term external precision of our method is better than ±0.05‰ for δ26Mg. This precision allows us to distinguish the fractionation of Mg isotopes in low-Mg granites and rhyolites as well as that between mantle minerals.
Rapid Two-Column Separation Method for Determining Barium Isotopic Compositions Using MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:In recent years, the stable isotope composition of barium has emerged as a powerful tracer for understanding crucial geo-social processes; therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient method for Ba isotopic ratios. Herein, we describe a rapid method for determining the isotopic ratios of Ba using a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer in the low-resolution mode (Neptune Plus). In this method, the exact amount of the resin and the low eluted volume of the acid used in column purification significantly reduce the time required for Ba separation. Instrumental mass bias calibrations were performed for both standard-sample bracketing (SSB) and double-spike methods. The results show that the double-spike method provided Ba isotopic ratios with higher precision than the SSB technique. The effects of acid molarity and concentration mismatch, as well as the potential matrix effect, were investigated in the wet plasma mode. We evaluated the Ba isotopic compositions of ten geological reference materials, namely, BCR-2, BHVO-2, AGV-2, GSP-2, RGM-2, G-2, GSR-3, GSR-5, GSR-8, and GSR-11. Results indicated that these compositions were highly accurate with respect to the international Ba isotope standard, NIST SRM 3104a. Furthermore, the Ba isotopic compositions of most geological reference materials examined in this study agreed well with previously published data within the quoted analytical uncertainties. The long-term reproducibility analyses of all standards indicated that the obtained isotopic ratios were highly reproducible for delta Ba-138(/)134, with precisions of . <=+/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2SD). Compared to previous reports, we optimized the process of chemical purification, separated Ba samples faster, and improved the efficiency of the analyses employed in this study.
Innovative Determination of Zinc Isotope Ratios in Geological Reference Materials: A Combined Precipitation and Anion Exchange Resin Method by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Advancements in Zn isotope analytical methods and their widespread application in geosciences underscore the importance of the purification process in isotopic measurements. Efficient purification of Zn, which involves separating Zn from matrix elements, is essential for accurately determining Zn isotopic compositions. This study proposes an optimized purification method that combines precipitation and a chromatographic procedure, significantly enhancing the purification efficiency. Using the established purification process, nine widely available geological-certified reference materials with known Zn isotopic compositions yield delta 66 Zn values that are in agreement with most previously published data within two standard deviations (2s) of repeat measurements. In addition, the effects of the presence of matrix elements have been evaluated using Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS in a wet plasma mode. The average delta 66 Zn value of the multi-elemental Zn standard GSB1, prepared by adopting GSB with different matrix elements, demonstrates good consistency with the long-term measured value of the pure GSB-Zn solution after precipitation and chromatographic separation. This enhanced purification protocol for Zn isotope measurement applies to a diverse range of geological samples and reduces the time and chemical reagents required for purification compared to conventional methods.

Abstract:High-purity N2 was used to increase the mobile phase flow rate during ion purification of ion-exchange resin. This was performed to improve the efficiency of isotope separation and purification, and to meet the efficiency requirements of rapid multiple-collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) analysis. For Cu isotope separation, our results indicated that at a gas flow rate >60 mL/min, the separation chromatographic peaks broadened and the recovery rate decreased to <99.2%. On the other hand, no significant change in the Cu peaks was observed at a gas flow rate of 20 mL/min and the recovery rate was determined to be >99.9%. The Cu isotope ratio, measured by the standard-sample bracketing method, agreed with reference data within a ±2 SD error range. The separation time was reduced from the traditional 10 h (without N2) to 4 h (with N2), indicating that the efficiency was more than doubled. Moreover, Sr and Nd isotope separation in AGV-2 (US Geological Survey andesite standard sample) accelerated with a 20 mL/min gas flow, demonstrating that with the passage of N2, the purified liquid comprised Rb/Sr and Sm/Nd ratios of <0.000 049 and <0.000 001 5, respectively. This indicated an effective separation of Rb from Sr and Sm from Nd. MC-ICPMS could therefore be applied to accurately determine Sr and Nd isotope ratios. The results afforded were consistent with the reference data within a ±2 SD error range and the total separation time was shortened from 2 d to <10 h.
Development of an Automatic Column Chromatography Separation Device for Metal Isotope Analysis Based on Droplet Counting

Abstract:A novel, simple, cost-effective, reliable, and practical automatic column chromatography separation device capable of simultaneously purifying samples for radiogenic and non-traditional stable isotope analysis has been developed. The device avoids the use of any pump and features eluent driving by the siphon effect (gravity) and quantitative control by infrared droplet counting. Several factors affecting the control of droplets were investigated, including types and concentrations of eluents and the height of the liquid level. Results showed that accurate dripping of the eluent could be readily achieved by controlling the number of droplets under selected conditions. The separation performance of the device was first demonstrated by the elution of Sr and Cd in synthetic matrix solutions. The recoveries of Sr and Cd samples were better than 87.6 and 95.0%, respectively, and the whole procedure blank was about 0.3 ng for Sr and 0.1 ng for Cd. Finally, the reliability of the device was further validated by the purification of Sr and Cd from different geological reference materials (NIST 2711a, Nod-A-1, BCR-2, and BHVO-2). The determined Cd and Sr isotope values agree well with their reference values within the uncertainty range. In this study, the key effects of carbonization temperature and nano-calcium carbonate agglomeration on the separation mechanism of calcium and magnesium have been investigated. The results indicated that the reaction in the carbonization process was stepwise. Precise control of the carbonization temperature was essential for the formation of Mg(HCO 3 ) 2 due to its low reaction efficiency at lower temperatures or decomposition markedly at higher temperatures. Meanwhile, there was a common-ion effect in solutions containing Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ . Nano-CaCO 3 particles were formed during carbonization and agglomerated with the prolongation of static time. A product with a purity of 99.56% MgO and 0.16% CaO was obtained under the optimized conditions: ratio of liquid–solid 30 L/g, carbonization temperature 22–25 °C, carbonization time 1 h, and refining time 4 h. This work has important guiding significance for the preparation of high purity magnesium oxide from dolomite.
