Abstract:Carbon isotopes have been widely used in tracing a wide variety of geological and environmental processes. The carbon isotope composition of bulk rocks and minerals was conventionally analyzed by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), and, more recently, secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been widely used to determine carbon isotope composition of carbon-bearing solid materials with good spatial resolution. Here, we present a new method that couples a RESOlution S155 193 nm laser ablation system with a Nu Plasma II MC-ICP-MS, with the aim of measuring carbon isotopes in situ in carbonate minerals (i.e., calcite and aragonite). Under routine operating conditions for δ13C analysis, instrumental bias generally drifts by 0.8‰-2.0‰ in a typical analytical session of 2-3 h. Using a magmatic calcite as the standard, the carbon isotopic composition was determined for a suite of calcite samples with δ13C values in the range of -6.94‰ to 1.48‰. The obtained δ13C data are comparable to IRMS values. The combined standard uncertainty for magmatic calcite is <0.3‰ (1s). No significant matrix effects have been identified in calcite with the amplitude of chemical composition variation (i.e., MnO, SrO, MgO, or FeO) up to 2.5 wt %. Two modern corals were investigated using magmatic calcite as the calibration standard, and the average δ13C values for both corals are similar to the bulk IRMS values. Moreover, coral exhibits significant heterogeneity in carbon isotope compositions, with differences up to 4.85‰ within an individual coral. This study indicates that LA-MC-ICP-MS can serve as an appropriate method to analyze carbon isotopes of carbonate minerals in situ.

Abstract:This study presents a chemical protocol for the separation of Mg that is particularly adapted for diverse igneous rock samples, especially for high-K and low-Mg rocks. This protocol is based on a combination of three procedures: the removal of K from the samples using the precipitation procedure, followed by the separation of Fe and Ca using 2 mL of AG50W-X12 cation exchange resin, and finally the removal of Al, Ti, Na, and Fe elements using 0.5 mL of AG50W-X12 cation exchange resin. The effect of acidity and concentration mismatch as well as the matrix effect were rigorously evaluated using Nu Plasma II MCI-CP-MS with a wet plasma mode. The delta Mg-26 mean values of the GSB and Alfa Mg standard solutions are -2.05 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2 standard deviation (2s), n = 106) and -3.91 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2s, n = 51), respectively, which serve as in-house Mg standards in the State Key Laboratory of Continental Dynamics (SKLCD). The average delta Mg-26 value of one multi-elemental Mg standard GSB-1, made by adopting GSB with matrix elements, agrees well with the recommended value after precipitation and chromatographic separation. The long-term reproducibility, assessed by repeated measurements of Mg standard solutions and reference materials (RMs), is +/- 0.06 parts per thousand. The robustness of our method is further assessed by the replicated analyses of fifteen rock standards and olivine grains with large variations in MgO and K2O content.

Abstract:Abstract The stable isotopic compositions of diagenetic minerals can provide valuable constraints on the sources, precipitation temperatures and relative timing of cements in reservoir rocks. This type of information is essential when trying to understand and predict the distribution of cements in the subsurface, and their impact on reservoir quality. Conventional isotope methods contribute to answers to many diagenetic problems, but where core or time are scarce, or where good mineral separation is unobtainable, laser-based stable isotope methods offer several advantages. These include the ability to analyse carbonates, sulphides and anhydrite in situ with 50–100 μm resolution, simple and clear sample and analysis viewing optics, savings on sample preparation time and greatly reduced sample size requirements. Diagenetic silicates such as quartz and clay cements cannot be analysed in situ by laser but, where in situ analysis of quartz δ 18 O is demanded, ion microprobe analysis can provide very high resolution (20–30 μm) capability with a precision of ±1%.

Abstract:We present a method for precise measurement of Mg isotope ratios for low-Mg rock samples (where MgO <1wt.%) by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The efficiency of Mg purification is significantly improved by using a newly calibrated HNO3+HF step to remove undesired matrix elements (such as Ti, Al, Fe, and K) in low-Mg samples. We also establish that increasing the amount of Mg loaded to the chromatographic column minimized blank effects of organics leached from cation resin. All parameters that could affect the accuracy and precision of Mg isotope analyses were rigorously examined by two independent laboratories in Beijing and Hefei. The δ26Mg of mono-elemental Mg standard CAM-1 measured in the two laboratories were −2.597±0.042‰ (2σ, n=49) and −2.598±0.039‰ (2σ, n=79), respectively; in house standard IGGMg1 were −1.742±0.041‰ (2σ, n=53) and −1.749±0.049‰ (2σ, n=72), respectively. The average δ26Mg over ten months of two synthetic standards, made by doping IGGMg1 and IGGMg2 with matrix elements, agrees well with their recommended values, within error. The robustness of our method was further assessed by replicated analyses of sixteen rock standards with MgO contents from 0.28wt.% to 49.4wt.%. The δ26Mg of USGS rhyolite standards RGM-1 and RGM-2 are −0.188±0.031‰ (2σ, n=35) and −0.182±0.041‰ (2σ, n=72), respectively; granite standard GA is −0.165±0.038‰ (2σ, n=57), G-2 is −0.129±0.045‰ (2σ, n=34), GS-N is −0.204±0.059‰ (2σ, n=33), GSP-2 is 0.042±0.020‰ (2σ, n=15), and GSR-1 is −0.234±0.016‰ (2σ, n=17). Based on repeated analyses of standards, the long-term external precision of our method is better than ±0.05‰ for δ26Mg. This precision allows us to distinguish the fractionation of Mg isotopes in low-Mg granites and rhyolites as well as that between mantle minerals.

Abstract:Magnesium has three stable isotopes:24Mg,25Mg and 26Mg.Available data show that the largest Mg-isotopic variation occurs in meteorites,with δ26Mg values of-0.71‰-11.92‰(relative to DSM3 standard),whereas the terrestrial rocks show smaller Mg-isotopic variation.For example,mantle rocks show a δ26Mg variation of-3.01‰-1.03‰;sedimentary carbonates display a δ26Mg variation from-4.84‰ to-1.09‰;and loess has a δ26Mg value of-0.60‰.At present,many laboratories use MC-ICPMS for the precise measurement of Mg-isotopic composition.Because of the isotopic heterogeneity of the standard SRM980 produced by NIST,the new standard DSM3 has been recommended as the reference material to report Mg-isotopic compositions.At present the research on magnesium isotope geochemistry is focusing on the following aspects:① cosmochemistry and star formation processes;② tracing mantle metasomatism;③ variation of seawater δ26Mg value through geologic history;④ estimates of the Mg flux during continental weathering.Study on Mg-isotope geochemistry in China is just starting and the application of Mg isotopes to solving various geological problems will be enhanced in the near future both at home and abroad.

Abstract:Many applications at the forefront of the study of the chemical composition of marine carbonates require in-situ micro-scale geochemical imaging. Such analyses are, however, challenging, requiring analytical techniques that are either expensive with limited accessibility (e.g. synchrotron X-Ray spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry), or time-consuming and able to only analyse a limited range of elements (e.g. electron microprobe). Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) as a tool for generating 2D images has grown in popularity, yet many analytical issues remain when generating high-spatial resolution geochemical images using this approach. Here we employ the imageGEO193 (ESL) fast wash-out laser ablation system coupled to the Nu Instruments Vitesse Time-of-Flight (TOF) ICP mass spectrometer, with its near-full mass spectra capabilities, to generate 2D geochemical images of a range of biogenic carbonates at ≤2 μm pixel resolution (pixel widths of either 1 or 2 μm) and at an unprecedented speed (200 pixels/s). We demonstrate sensitivity of ~100 cps/μg g −1 at low mass rising to ~1000 cps/μg g −1 at high mass based on analyses of reference materials JCp-1 (carbonate) and NIST SRM612 (silicate) with 1 μm wide square laser beams, and accuracy of ±7 % for elements present at concentrations >0.5 μg g −1 based on analyses of carbonate reference material JCt-1. By applying our quantitative method to a range of biogenic carbonates (coral skeletons, coralline algae, foraminifera), we demonstrate that considerable but coherent micron-scale compositional variability is the norm for nearly all quantified elements, including: Mg, Sr, Ba and U. This approach therefore has great potential to provide valuable insights into biomineralisation mechanisms and "vital effects", ultimately facilitating more robust reconstructions of past environments.

Abstract:The investigation of magnesium (Mg) isotopes in dolomite has mainly focused on marine dolomite environments, leaving a significant gap in the understanding of their dynamics within lacustrine settings, especially in saline lake basins. In this study, a total of 16 sediment core samples from Well BX-7 in the Qianjiang Depression were sequentially selected for scanning electron microscope observation, whole-rock analysis for major and minor elements, and isotopic measurements including δ18Ocarb, δ13Ccarb, δ26Mgdol, and δ26MgSi. In addition, two intact cores were subjected to detailed analysis on the centimeter scale. Sedimentation models were established to elucidate dolomite formation under contrasting climatic conditions, specifically humid climates with a significant riverine Mg input versus relatively dry conditions with a lower Mg input. Furthermore, a quantitative model was developed to assess the magnesium flux and isotopic mass balance within lacustrine systems, simulating the magnesium isotope variations in lake water under different climatic scenarios. The dolomite sample data at a smaller scale (sampling interval ≈ 3~5 mm) demonstrate a consistent trend with the established model, providing additional confirmation of its reliability. Dolomite precipitated under humid climatic conditions exhibits a lower and relatively stable δ26Mgdol, lower δ18O, and higher CIA, indicating higher river inputs and relatively stable Mg isotope values of lake water controlled by river input. Nevertheless, dolomite formed under relatively dry climatic conditions shows a relatively high δ26Mgdol, higher δ18O, and lower CIA, suggesting reduced river inputs and weathering intensity, as well as relatively high magnesium isotope values of the lake water controlled by dolomite precipitation. This study contributes to the understanding of magnesium isotopes in lacustrine dolomite systems.

Abstract:Microanalysis of carbon and magnesium isotopes in dolomite is gaining increasing attention as a valuable tool in various fields of earth sciences. However, the matrix effect poses a major challenge for determining C and Mg isotopes using laser ablation multi-collector ICP-MS, particularly due to the wide range of chemical compositions found in natural dolomite. A preferred solution is to use a matrix-matched reference material with homogeneous isotope compositions at the micron scale. In this contribution, we established a new protocol for preparing dolomite reference material for isotopic microanalysis through pressureless sintering. The effects of particle size and sintering temperature on the isotopic homogeneity of sintered dolomite powder pellets (SDPPs) were carefully evaluated. Our results indicate that smaller d 90 particle size improves isotope homogeneity, and SDPPs with a d 90 of 3.17 μm shows the best laser ablation repeatabilities of δ 26 Mg and δ 25 Mg (0.11‰ and 0.09‰) that are 2-4 times better compared to those with d90 of 10.37 μm. Higher sintering temperature enhances particle cohesion and pellet hardness that are crucial for laser ablation performance, vickers hardness (HV) is improved to 41.58 kgf mm -2 when SDPPs are heated up to 400 °C below decomposition temperature. These SDPPs show the best δ 13 C, δ 26 Mg and δ 25 Mg homogeneity with a twice standard deviation value of 0.37‰, 0.11‰ and 0.06‰ (n = 15), respectively. Of interest, in situ carbon and magnesium isotope characterization of SDPPs using LA-MC-ICP-MS shows neglective isotope fractionation against natural dolomites. This further confirms the reliability and robustness of the proposed protocol for dolomite isotopic reference preparation via pressureless sintering.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry（MC-ICP-MS）, the analytical precision of potassium（K） isotopes has been greatly improved, which in turn has promoted their development as potential geochemical tracers in processes involving continental weathering, crust-mantle interaction, and so on. Until now, the cumbersome and time-consuming process of sample pretreatments and the poor analytical accuracy caused by argon hydrides interference are still the biggest obstacles to the wide application of K isotopes. After completely dissolving the samples with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid, purification of K from major matrix was performed on a customized quartz ion exchange column packed with ～2.7 mL of AG50W-X8 cation exchange resin（BioRad TM,200～400 mesh） using 0.5 mol/L HNO 3 as the eluent. This one-step procedure can effectively separate K from Li, Na, Ti, Mg, Mn, Al and Ca, except for Cr, in most of the geological samples. To find the appropriate method for high-precision stable K isotopic measurements, for minimizing the ArH + yield and improving the stability of the instrument, three methods were compared here（the high-resolution mode, high-resolution mode with continuous acquisition measurement run mode, and the low-resolution mode with a method designed to eliminate ArH + interference）. The low-resolution mode has the advantages of low cost, high stability, and high precision（long-term precision at about 0.08‰ for our laboratory）. When used to measure the K isotopic composition of a series of international geological reference materials, the results are consistent with previous values within analytical precision, indicating the reliability of this method. The K isotopic composition of a set of Chinese national rock standard materials is determined here. The measured values of K isotopes can provide a reference for the data comparison between different laboratories in future.
High-precision Determination of Stable Potassium and Magnesium Isotopes Utilizing Single Column Separation and Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:With advances in analytical precision by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, K and Mg isotopes are increasingly used as a combined tool in tracing sources and processes in geoscientific research. However, reported methods in the literature require at least two column separation procedures during sample purification, which is time-consuming (at least two days). Therefore, a single column procedure could improve efficiencies, and these efforts are necessary to extend the combined application of K and Mg isotopes as geological tracers. In this study, a simple and time-efficient chromatographic procedure was reported, utilizing a single column for quantitative separation of both K and Mg from sample matrices for high-precision isotopic measurement of K and Mg. Using this novel method, the results for international geological standards agreed with published values, verifying the robustness of the procedure. The popularization of this optimized procedure would potentially extend the combined application of K and Mg isotopes in geological studies.

Abstract:Rationale Potassium (K) is a major component of several silicate minerals and seawater, and, therefore, constraining past changes in the potassium cycle is a promising way of tracing large‐scale geological processes on Earth. However, [K] measurement using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) is challenging due to an ArH + interference, which may be of a similar magnitude to the K + ion beam in samples with <0.1% m/m [K]. Methods In this work, we investigated the effect of the ArH + interference on K/Ca data quality by comparing results from laser‐ablation (LA)‐ICP‐MS measured in medium and high mass resolution modes and validating our LA results via solution ICP‐optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and solution ICP‐MS measurements. To do so, we used a wide range of geological reference materials, with a particular focus on marine carbonates, which are potential archives of past changes in the K cycle but are typically characterised by [K] < 200 μg/g. In addition, we examine the degree to which trace‐element data quality is driven by downhole fractionation during LA‐ICP‐MS measurements. Results Our results show that medium mass resolution (MR) mode is sufficiently capable of minimising the effect of the ArH + interference on K + . However, the rate of downhole fractionation for Na and K varies between different samples as a result of their differing bulk composition, resulting in matrix‐specific inaccuracy. We show how this can be accounted for via downhole fractionation corrections, resulting in an accuracy of better than 1% and a long‐term reproducibility (intermediate precision) of <6% (relative standard deviation) in JCp‐1NP using LA‐ICP‐MS in MR mode. Conclusion Our [K] measurement protocol is demonstrably precise and accurate and applicable to a wide range of materials. The measurement of K/Ca in relatively low‐[K] marine carbonates is presented here as a key example of a new application opened up by these advances.

Abstract:In situ Sr isotope analysis of geological materials by laser ablation multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) is a powerful tracer technique for tracking magmatic source components and geological processes. However, the accuracy and precision of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio are limited in the analysis of natural minerals because of the low-Sr concentration, the isobaric interference or small grains with complex textural contexts, especially for transparent minerals such as feldspars. In this study, analytical results demonstrated that ablation rates in fs laser ablation were consistent for various samples (0.08–0.11μm per pulse), but those in ns laser ablation were obviously material properties-dependent, such as the rates of 0.026μm per pulse and 0.144μm per pulse for feldspar and pyrite, respectively. In addition, at similar energy fluences, the sensitivities of Sr in feldspars analyzed by the fs laser were 3.4 times higher than those analyzed by the ns laser due to the higher ablation efficiency of the fs pulse. These advantages of the fs laser not only offer the benefit of eliminating or weakening the matrix effect during the laser ablation processes but also help to improve the analytical precision for transparent minerals. We also demonstrated that the isobaric interferences of calcium dimers and argides (CaAr++CaCa+) and Kr+ were dramatically reduced by factors of 6.5–11.7 and 5–12.5 in the presence of 6–12mlmin−1N2, respectively. Furthermore, with the addition of N2 (12mlmin−1), the sensitivity of Rb was inhibited, resulting in a decrease of 1.47 times in Rb/Sr signal ratios. Due to the effect of suppressing interferences by adding N2, both the stability and accuracy of the 87Sr/86Sr and 84Sr/86Sr ratios show improvement, especially for the Rb-rich feldspars.
An Efficient Li Dual-Column System and High-Precision Li Isotope Measurement of High Matrix and Low-Li Samples by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in using lithium (Li) isotopes in marine carbonates to trace chemical weathering and clay formation in the Earth's history. Yet it remains technically challenging to precisely and efficiently determine the Li isotope composition in carbonate samples due to the imperfect Li separation led by the matrix effect and the extremely low Li concentration in carbonates relative to the analytical threshold of sample size. For such high matrix and low-Li samples, here we present an efficient dual-column chromatography system for Li purification. The dual-column system has a large loading capacity, fixed Li elution range of merely 12 mL, complete Li recovery (>99.5%) and relatively efficient total elution time (7 hours). The procedural blank is 0.036 & PLUSMN; 0.002 ng accounting for sample dissolution and chemical purification, and the Na/Li mass ratio of the Li cut is below 0.5. High precision and accurate Li isotope measurement is performed efficiently with a small sample-sized protocol developed on a MC-ICP-MS (Neptune plus) connected with an APEX 2-IR desolvator. The whole procedure is validated by analyzing a series of certified reference materials. The long-term external precision of & delta;Li-7 determined based on L-SVEC and a high-purity Li solution is 0.6 & PTSTHOUSND; (2SD) and 0.9 & PTSTHOUSND; (2SD) for a minimum sample size of 7.5 ng.
Magnesium Isotopes Archive the Initial Carbonate Abundances of Metasedimentary Rocks Prior to Thermal Decarbonation

Abstract:Investigating the carbonate preservation efficiency (CPE) of continental crust is crucial to understand the global carbon cycle, which requires constraints on initial carbonate abundances (ICAs) of crustal rocks. To link Mg isotopes to ICAs, we present elemental and Mg isotopic data for Himalayan carbonate‐bearing and carbonate‐free metasedimentary rocks. Given no evident melt extraction or external‐fluid infiltration, ICAs of these samples can be independently estimated by elemental data. Despite different carbonate species in the protoliths, all the samples show congruent relationship between their δ26Mg and ICAs, owing to the elevated carbonate δ26Mg and Mg/Ca in protoliths of calcite‐rich samples resulting from diagenetic processes. When collated with literature data, we suggest the observed correlation here can be applied to most carbonate‐bearing (meta‐)sedimentary rocks. Based on a steady state box‐model, we constrained the modern net carbonate accretion flux (9.50−5.56+9.50 Tmol/year) and the average time‐integrated CPE (∼80−43+20 %) for continental crust.

High-precision analysis of carbon isotopic composition for individual CO 2 inclusions via Raman spectroscopy: Addressing issues arising from the laser-heating effects

Abstract:The carbon isotopic composition of carbon dioxide fluid inclusions trapped within minerals reflects the origin and evolution of the CO 2 -bearing fluids and melts. Recently, we developed a highly accurate method using Raman spectroscopy to determine the carbon isotopic composition of CO 2 fluid inclusions, by simultaneously collecting 13 CO 2 and hot bands at a controlled temperature, and using the peak height ratio of 13 CO 2 and one of hot bands near 1410 cm −1 ( HR ) to determine δ 13 CO 2 value. This microanalytical technique enables precise measurements of the δ 13 C values of different CO 2 fluid inclusions within zoned mineral crystals to reveal the multiple-stages evolution of CO 2 -bearing fluids and melts. However, when studying fluid inclusions hosted within high laser heating coefficient minerals such as olivine and pyroxene in mantle xenoliths, local temperature near the inclusions will be higher than the temperature controlled by heating-cooling stage. To address this issue, we examined the effects of laser heating on CO 2 isotopic standard samples sealed in the silica capillary, and developed a novel procedure to determine the δ 13 C values of natural fluid inclusions by using two CO 2 standard samples with known carbon isotopic compositions. The proposed workflow successfully determines the δ 13 C values of natural CO 2 inclusions, with an average deviation of 0.58 ‰ between the measurements and the model.

Applications and advances of the magnesium isotope on the 'dolomite problem'

Abstract:As a long standing enigma, the 'dolomite problem' not only is a basic geological problem but also has close relationships with the exploration and development of the economic hydrocarbon reservoirs. Traditional petrographic and geochemical approaches have been applied widely to the research of dolomite, but none of them could provide unambiguous solution to explain the process of the dolomitizaton and its Mg2+ origination. With the development of high precision Mg isotope analytical technique, Mg isotope become a useful tool in the study of dolomite and the Mg isotopic data of various types of dolomites from different geologic time were accumulated. Moreover, the fractionation of Mg isotope during dolomitization process has been extensively studied based on theoretical calculation, experimental calibration and actual observation. These developments provide a firm theoretical base for the application of Mg isotope on the study of dolomite origination. However, there are significant differences among theoretical calculated, experimental calibrated and actual observed fractionations. This discrepancy may ascribe either to the unequilibrium fractionation during experimental calibration and actual observation or to the different forming process between the actual forming process of dolomite and the theoretical process. Two numerical models for the Mg isotope systematics based on typical geological model of dolomitization have established to constrain the process of dolomitization and the source of Mg2+. The Diffusion-Advection-Reaction (DAR) model simulates the contemporaneous seawater dolomitization process, in which Mg is delivered by diffusion. The Advective Flow (AF) model describes the dolomitization process in fluid flow, which can be applied to most traditional dolomitization models, such as the reflux model. Although the overall framework of the established Mg isotope geochemical model is correct, some limitations in the application scope and parameter setting still exist and are needed to be modified in the future research.

Abstract:Abstract. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb geochronology of carbonate minerals, calcite in particular, is rapidly gaining popularity as an absolute dating method. The high spatial resolution of LA-ICP-MS U–Pb carbonate geochronology has benefits over traditional isotope dilution methods, particularly for diagenetic and hydrothermal calcite, because uranium and lead are heterogeneously distributed on the sub-millimetre scale. At the same time, this can provide limitations to the method, as locating zones of radiogenic lead can be time-consuming and “hit or miss”. Here, we present strategies for dating carbonates with in situ techniques, through imaging and petrographic techniques to data interpretation; our examples are drawn from the dating of fracture-filling calcite, but our discussion is relevant to all carbonate applications. We review several limitations to the method, including open-system behaviour, variable initial-lead compositions, and U–daughter disequilibrium. We also discuss two approaches to data collection: traditional spot analyses guided by petrographic and elemental imaging and image-based dating that utilises LA-ICP-MS elemental and isotopic map data.

Abstract:Simultaneously in-situ analysis for more than 25 trace elements and U-Pb and Pb-Pb ages in single zircons using the LAM-ICPMS technique was successfully achieved. The precision and accuracy of analysis are 5-15% for most trace elements, 1-3% for 207Pb/206Pb isotopic ratios, and 2-8% for 206Pb/238U ratios. This combined geochemical and geochronological investigation has significant implications to studying zircons with complicated geological histories.

Abstract:An online method using continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CF-IRMS) interfaced with a Gasbench II device was established to analyze carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions and to estimate the content of minor amounts of carbonate in silicate rocks. The mixtures of standard materials and high-purity quartz are firstly used to calibrate different quantities of carbonate in silicates. The results suggest that the accuracy and precision of the online analysis are both better than those obtained using an offline method. There is a positive correlation between the carbonate weight and the Mass44 ion beam intensity (or peak area). When the weight of carbonate in the mixtures is greater than 70 mu g (equal to similar to 1800 mV Mass44 ion beam intensity), the delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of samples usually have accuracy and precision of +/-0.1 parts per thousand and +/-0.2 parts per thousand (1 sigma), respectively. If the weight is less than 70 mu g, some limitations (e.g., not perfectly linear) are encountered that significantly reduce the accuracy and precision. The measured delta O-18 values are systematically lower than the true values by -0.3 to -0.7 parts per thousand; the lower the carbonate content, the lower the measured delta O-18 value. For samples with lower carbonate content, the required phosphoric acid doses are higher and more oxygen isotope exchanges with the water in the phosphoric acid. To guarantee accurate results with high precision, multiple analyses of in-house standards and an artificial MERCK sample with delta C-13 values from -35.58 to 1.61 parts per thousand and delta O-18 from 6.04 to 18.96 parts per thousand were analyzed simultaneously with the unknown sample. This enables correction of the measured raw data for the natural sample based on multiple-point normalization.
