Abstract:This study presents a practical method for high precision Ba isotope measurement of barite using the Na2CO3 exchange reaction and Ba-135-Ba-136 double-spike method by MC-ICP-MS. The effects of matrices and conditions of the exchange reaction were rigorously examined. The precision and accuracy of this method were tested by measurement of a synthetic barite standard prepared by reacting Ba(NO3)(2) with Na2SO4. The delta Ba-137/134 of the synthetic barite is 0.06 +/- 0.03 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 16) relative to SRM3104a, which is well consistent with the recommended value (0.07 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand, 2SD, n = 769). The robustness of this method was further assessed by replicate analyses of six barite reference materials, which cover a large range of BaSO4 contents from 18.87 wt% to nearly 100 wt%. The delta Ba-137/134 of pure barite international standard NBS127 is -0.21 +/- 0.03 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 20); the delta Ba-137/134 of natural standards GBW07811, 07 812, 07 814, 07 815 and 07 816 is -0.06 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 12), 0.24 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 48), -0.02 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 10), -0.05 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 18), and -0.01 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 20), respectively. Based on repeated analyses of these standards, the long-term external precision of delta Ba-137/134 is better than 0.05 parts per thousand (2SD), much smaller than the variation in these barite standards (up to 0.45 parts per thousand), revealing the large Ba isotope fractionation in natural barites.

Abstract:In recent years, the stable isotope composition of barium has emerged as a powerful tracer for understanding crucial geo-social processes; therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient method for Ba isotopic ratios. Herein, we describe a rapid method for determining the isotopic ratios of Ba using a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer in the low-resolution mode (Neptune Plus). In this method, the exact amount of the resin and the low eluted volume of the acid used in column purification significantly reduce the time required for Ba separation. Instrumental mass bias calibrations were performed for both standard-sample bracketing (SSB) and double-spike methods. The results show that the double-spike method provided Ba isotopic ratios with higher precision than the SSB technique. The effects of acid molarity and concentration mismatch, as well as the potential matrix effect, were investigated in the wet plasma mode. We evaluated the Ba isotopic compositions of ten geological reference materials, namely, BCR-2, BHVO-2, AGV-2, GSP-2, RGM-2, G-2, GSR-3, GSR-5, GSR-8, and GSR-11. Results indicated that these compositions were highly accurate with respect to the international Ba isotope standard, NIST SRM 3104a. Furthermore, the Ba isotopic compositions of most geological reference materials examined in this study agreed well with previously published data within the quoted analytical uncertainties. The long-term reproducibility analyses of all standards indicated that the obtained isotopic ratios were highly reproducible for delta Ba-138(/)134, with precisions of . <=+/- 0.05 parts per thousand (2SD). Compared to previous reports, we optimized the process of chemical purification, separated Ba samples faster, and improved the efficiency of the analyses employed in this study.

Abstract:This study presents a high‐precision method to measure barium (Ba) isotope compositions of international carbonate reference materials and natural carbonates. Barium was purified using chromatographic columns filled with cation exchange resin (AG50W‐X12, 200–400 mesh). Barium isotopes were measured by MC‐ICP‐MS, using a 135Ba–136Ba double‐spike to correct mass‐dependent fractionation during purification and instrumental measurement. The precision and accuracy were monitored by measuring Ba isotope compositions of the reference material JCp‐1 (coral) and a synthetic solution obtained by mixing NIST SRM 3104a with other matrix elements. The mean δ137/134Ba values of JCp‐1 and the synthetic solution relative to NIST SRM 3104a were 0.21 ± 0.03‰ (2s, n = 16) and 0.02 ± 0.03‰ (2s, n = 6), respectively. Replicate measurements of NIST SRM 915b, COQ‐1, natural coral and stalagmite samples gave average δ137/134Ba values of 0.10 ± 0.04‰ (2s, n = 18), 0.08 ± 0.04‰ (2s, n = 20), 0.27 ± 0.04‰ (2s, n = 16) and 0.04 ± 0.03‰ (2s, n = 20), respectively. Barium mass fractions and Ba isotopes of subsamples drilled from one stalagmite profile were also measured. Although Ba mass fractions varied significantly along the profile, Ba isotope signatures were homogeneous, indicating that Ba isotope compositions of stalagmites could be a potential tool (in addition to Ba mass fractions) to constrain the source of Ba in carbonate rocks and minerals.

Two late Mesozoic basalts from China have a delta Ba-137/134 of 0.132 +/- 0.020 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 7) and 0.001 +/- 0.034 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 7), respectively. Accurate Determination of Barium Isotopic Compositions in Sequentially Leached Phases from Carbonates by Double Spike-Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (DS-TIMS)

Abstract:Recent studies have proposed barium isotopes as a novel proxy for studying primary productivity in paleo-oceangraphical studies and elements cycling through the critical zone. Pristine marine carbonates are generally assumed to preserve Ba isotope compositions of ancient seawater. However, Ba incorporated in or adsorbed on detrital minerals such as clays in impure carbonates may limit the accurate application of the Ba isotope proxy for paleo-ocean environmental reconstruction purposes. We present here a sequential extraction procedure and show that a considerable range of Ba concentrations can be associated with the four operationally defined sequential leaching fractions (water-soluble, exchangeable, carbonate, and oxidizable fractions). Chemical separation of Ba from these leachates is achieved with a recovery of >98.6% by our modified ion exchange procedure. Potential instrumental mass bias effects and barium isotope fractionation during the chemical separation are corrected using a carefully optimized 130Ba-135Ba double-spike method. A long-term reproducibility better than ±0.03‰ (2SD) for δ137/134Ba has been achieved by using the double spike-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (DS-TIMS) in this study. We demonstrate that significant variations of δ137/134Ba in the analyzed leachates suggest a considerable Ba isotope fractionation between carbonate mineral phase and noncarbonate phases of marine carbonate rocks. The barium isotope distribution in a set of standard reference materials and natural geological samples under various geological settings has been presented. When utilizing Ba isotopes as a proxy for primary productivity and the biogeochemical cycling of Ba, our new findings from sequential Ba extraction as well as our modified precise DS-TIMS analytical setup should be taken into account.
Determining 88sr/86sr of Barite Using the Na2CO3 Exchange Method

Abstract:This study presents a method of high-precision stable Sr isotope measurement for barite using the Na2CO3 exchange reaction and MC-ICP-MS. The reliability of this method was strictly tested by measurement of the synthetic barite standard. The synthetic barites were made by mixing the natural barite standard GBW07814 with three strontium-rich matrix rocks (carbonate JLs-1, andesite AGV-2, and black shale SGR-1) in different proportions. The average Sr-87/Sr-86 and delta Sr-88 of synthetic barites are 0.713556 +/- 0.000013 (2SD, n = 22) and -0.07 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 22), respectively, which are consistent with the values of GBW07814 (Sr-87/Sr-86 of 0.713555 +/- 0.000023, 2SD, n = 46 and delta Sr-88 of -0.06 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand, 2SD, n = 28). High recovery in the exchange reaction was achieved by using excessive Na2CO3 to avoid Sr isotope fractionation. Furthermore, the potential matrix effects in chemical purification were rigorously evaluated by analyzing the synthetic solution made by mixing SRM987 and matrix elements. The average delta Sr-88 of the synthetic solution is -0.01 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 4), consistent with the delta Sr-88 of SRM987 (0.00 parts per thousand). Based on long-term analyses of USTC-Sr (pure Sr solution), the external precision of delta Sr-88 was found to be better than 0.03 parts per thousand (2SD, n = 92). We further measured the Sr-87/Sr-86 and delta Sr-88 of five natural barite standards (GBW07811, GBW07812, GBW07814, GBW07815 and GBW07816), revealing significant stable Sr isotope fractionation in natural barites by 0.37 parts per thousand.

Abstract:The increasing significance of barium (Ba) in environmental and geologic research in recent years has led to interest in the application of the Ba isotopic composition as a tracer for natural materials with complex matrices. Most Ba isotope measurement techniques require separation of Ba from the rest of sample prior to analysis. This paper presents a method using readily available materials and disposable columns that effectively separates Ba from a range of geologic and hydrologic materials, including carbonate minerals, silicate rocks, barite, river water, and fluids with high total dissolved solids and organic content such as oil and gas brines, rapidly and without need for an additional cleanup column. The technique involves off-the-shelf columns and cation exchange resin and a two-reagent elution that uses 2.5 N HCl followed by addition of 2.0 N HNO3. We present data to show that major matrix elements from almost any natural material are separated from Ba in a single column pass, and that the method also effectively reduces or eliminates isobaric interferences from lanthanum and cerium.

Abstract:Barium (Ba) stable isotopes in carbonate rock have great potential to provide valuable information on environmental change and the biogeochemical cycles of oceans in the past. Ba in carbonate rock can exist in various phases, such as adsorbable and silicate-bound Ba. However, only the carbonate-bound phase is considered to record the Ba isotopic compositions of ambient seaweater. Here, we designed a two-step leaching experiment to obtain the carbonate-bound Ba in two typical carbonate rocks: limestone and cap dolostone. The results showed that after leaching by 1 mol L –1 ammonium acetate, the carbonate-bound Ba extracted by mixed solution of 1.5 mol L –1 acetic acid and 1 mol L –1 ammonium acetate in each studied sample have indistinguishable isotope ratios in leaching time conditions between 12 and 72 h. More importantly, the carbonate-bound Ba isotope ratios were quite different from those of the residue (up to 10 times of analytic uncertainty, 2SD ≤ ±0.04 %o) after leaching in three out of four leaching experiments, indicating that noncarbonated fraction could overprint a primary seawater signal. Our sequential leaching techniques could improve targeting of carbonate-bound Ba isotope signatures in various carbonate rocks to trace the Ba cycling in the oceans.

Abstract:: Sulfate minerals are widely distributed in nature, and their sulfur isotopic signatures offer a largely untapped source of potential information for improving our understanding of magmatic, hydrothermal, and sedimentary processes. In this study, we describe an analytical procedure for measuring the sulfur isotopic compositions of natural sulfate-bearing samples using a LA-MC-ICP-MS (laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) technique. YF-2 barite (BaSO 4 ) from the Yongfu hydrothermal deposit yields a δ 34 S value of 18.1 ± 0.4‰ (n = 11, 2SD), obtained by elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS), and has been adopted as the reference material for sulfur isotopic determination in this study. The sulfur isotopic ratios for NBS 127 and IAEA-SO-5 barium sulfate are validated by using YF-2 pressed powder tablets as the internal reference standard, and this analytical protocol yielded results that overlap with recommended values. The δ 34 S values obtained here for the YF-1, GTS, and DGD barites are similar to those recorded by EA-IRMS for these samples. WC barite displays highly variable sulfur isotopic compositions, although the average δ 34 S value for WC barite is similar to that obtained by EA-IRMS. Sulfates in the barite-celestine solid solution series and anhydrite were analyzed to determine the isotopic fractionation in varied matrices using both the RESOlution and GeoLasHD laser ablation systems. The analytical results suggest minimal sulfur isotopic fractionation between barite and other S-bearing matrices using both laser systems. For non-matrix matched sulfur isotope analysis, the ion signal intensity and laser parameters are important parameters that must be closely monitored. If sulfur isotopic fractionation is observed during sample ablation, this feature can be minimized by employing a smaller beam size, lower repetition rate and fluence output.

Abstract:Barium sulfate (BaSO4) content is used to evaluate the grade of barite ore. In the present study, we report a method to determine the BaSO4 content in barite ore by phase conversion-headspace gas chromatography with partial pressure correction. In this method, the ore sample is roasted with sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate after pretreatment with hydrochloric acid. The roasted product is subsequently placed in a closed headspace bottle to react with hydrochloric acid. The ratio of CO2 to O2 signals is detected by a thermal conductivity detector for gas chromatography. Finally, the BaSO4 content in barite ore is calculated using this ratio. The method demonstrates good precision (relative standard deviation < 0.84%) and accuracy (relative error < 3.40%), with the uncertainty at 95% confidence interval at approximately +/- 0.57%. Moreover, this approach is expected to be used for the batch testing of BaSO4 content in barite ores in industrial applications.

Abstract:The method of fast determining barium and Bitanium contents of BaTiO3 electronic ceramic nanopowders is introduced.The sample is liquited with Na2O2 at high temperature,then leached with acid aqueous solution containing concentrate hydrochloric acid.Determining barium and titanium contents is complexometric titration by adding EDTA solution.We should control the overdose 3 times of EDTA.The result shows that the method is simple,efficient,lower cost,and of high accuracy.The standard deviation measurement ranges are 0.039% and 0.049% .

Abstract:Barite is an important record of marine sulfate evolution throughout geologic history. Variations in oxygen isotope compositions (δ 18 O) at the microscale are highly important for studying the evolution of marine sulfate. However, the application of this proxy has been hindered due to the lack of reference materials for secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) microanalysis. This study introduces two new potential reference materials, NJU-Ba-1 and FJ barite for microbeam oxygen isotope measurements. Detailed examinations of the texture and major elements revealed no internal zoning of ground fragments from the two barite reference materials. The recommended δ 18 O VSMOW values of NJU-Ba-1 and FJ were determined by gas-source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GS-IRMS), with results of 7.94 ± 0.30‰ (2SD, N = 11) and 7.52 ± 0.34‰ (2SD, N = 8), respectively. SIMS instrumental stability was monitored by analyses of well characterized zircon references (Penglai and Qinghu), and the robustness of the SIMS barite δ 18 O measurements was further assessed by comparison with the values recommended by GS-IRMS. The effects of the crystallographic orientation, topography, and X – Y position on SIMS barite δ 18 O measurement were also examined. Multiple SIMS analyses suggest that both NJU-Ba-1 and FJ barite are homogeneous in oxygen isotope composition at the ∼20 μm level, with two standard deviations (2SD) of 0.36‰ ( N = 383) and 0.58‰ ( N = 325), respectively.
