Abstract:The spin Hall effect of light (SHEL), as a photonic analogue of the spin Hall effect, has been widely studied for manipulating spin-polarized photons and precision metrology. In this work, a physical model is established to reveal the impact of the interface pitch angle on the SHEL accompanied by the Imbert-Fedorov angular shift simultaneously. Then, a modified weak measurement technique is proposed in this case to amplify the spin shift experimentally, and the results agree well with the theoretical prediction. Interestingly, the amplified transverse shift is quite sensitive to the variation of the interface pitch angle, and the performance provides a simple and effective method for precise pitch angle sensing with a minimum observable angle of 6.6 × 10−5°.

Abstract:We have measured the spin-dependent nanometer-sized displacements of the spin Hall effect of the reflected light from a planar air-glass interface. In the case of the vertical polarization, the displacement is found to increase with the incident angle and subsequently decrease after similar to 48 deg, while in the case of the horizontal polarization, it changes rapidly near the Brewster angle. For a fixed incident angle of 30 deg, the displacement decreases to zero as the polarization angle approaches similar to 39 deg from 0 deg (the horizontal polarization) and then increases in the opposite direction until 90 deg (the vertical polarization). Abstract:We propose and realize a simple technique to measure the tiny spin Hall effect of light from the ratio of the minimum and the maximum intensities along two cross-polarization directions, without the requirement of a position-sensitive detector in the conventional weak measurement. Furthermore, the weak intensity ratio is dramatically amplified by purposely choosing the intensity along the direction close to that of the minimum instead of the maximum along the perpendicular polarization direction, which is verified by the experimental results. In principle, this method also can be modified for measurement of the high extinction ratio of a polarizer.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect is a manifestation of the spin-orbit interaction of light and can be measured by a transverse shift delta of photons with opposite spins. The precise measurement of transverse shifts can enable many spin-related applications, such as precise metrology and optical sensing. However, this transverse shift is generally small (i.e., delta/lambda < 10(-1), where A is the wavelength), which impedes its precise measurement. To date, proposals to generate a giant spin Hall effect (namely, with delta/lambda > 10(2)) have severe limitations, particularly its occurrence only over a narrow angular cone (with a width of Delta theta < 1 degrees). Here we propose a universal scheme to realize the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect with Delta theta > 70 degrees by exploiting the interface between free space and uniaxial epsilon-near-zero media. The underlying mechanism is ascribed to the almost-perfect polarization splitting between s and p polarized waves at the designed interface. Remarkably, this almost-perfect polarization splitting does not resort to the interference effect and is insensitive to the incident angle, which then gives rise to the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the spin Hall effect of reflected light at an air-uniaxial crystal interface. The spin-dependent nanometer-sized displacements depend not only on the incident polarization and the incident angle of the light beam, but also on the orientation of the crystal optic axis. The experimental results are in perfect agreement with theoretical predictions for the vertical and horizontal polarization incidence.

Abstract:We report an experiment showing the submillimeter Imbert-Fedorov shift from the ultrastrong spin orbital angular momentum coupling, which is a photonic version of the spin Hall effect, by measuring the reflection of light from the surface of a birefringent symmetrical metal cladding planar waveguide. The light incidents at a near-normal incident angle and excites resonant ultrahigh-order modes inside the waveguide. A 0.16-mm displacement of separated reflected light spots corresponding to two polarization states is distinguishable by human eyes. In our experiment, we demonstrate the control of polarizations of light and the direct observation of the spin Hall effect of light, which opens an important avenue towards potential applications for optical sensing and quantum information processing, where the spin nature of photons exhibits key features.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that it is possible to directly observe the resolvable spin separation in the spin Hall effect of light at an air-glass interface by choosing optimal parameters. When a P-polarized light with a beam waist of 10 μm is incident around Brewster's angle, the two spin components of the reflected beam can be completely separated by eliminating the influence of the in-plane wavevector spread. This not only obviously reveals the strong impacts of the polarization state, the incident angle, the beam waist, and the in-plane wavevector spread, but also intuitively visualizes the observation of the spin Hall effect of light.

Abstract:The interaction between light's spin and orbital angular momentum under nonparaxial conditions not only facilitates many fundamental sciences but also underpins a variety of applications. Such a strong coupling between the two separable dimensions normally occurs when light propagates through nanoscale inhomogeneous media or under tight focusing. In this regard, subwavelength scrutinizing the spatial distribution of such light attributes is of utmost importance. Here, we demonstrate a nanointerferometric scheme to map light's spin and orbital angular momentum with a subwavelength resolution via the interferometric scattering signal from a plasmonic nanohole. Abstract:We have developed a modified theory of the spin Hall effect of reflected light from a planar interface composed of two dielectric media and obtain the analytical expression valid for any incident angle including the Brewster’s angle. We improved the experimental method and measured the spin-dependent transverse displacement of reflected light from a planar air-glass interface around the Brewster’s angle. The experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical prediction.
Controllable spin-Hall and related effects of light in an atomic medium via coupling fields

Abstract:We show the existence of spin-Hall effect of light (SHEL) in an atomic medium which is made anisotropic via electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is made birefringent by applying an additional linearly polarized coupling light beam. The refractive index and the orientation of the optics axis are controlled by the coupling beam. We show that after transmitting the atomic medium, a linearly polarized probe light beam splits into its two spin components by opposite transverse shifts. With proper choice of parameters and atomic density of about $2.5times10^{17},mathrm{m}^{-3}$, the shifts are about the order of wavelength and can be larger than the wavelength by increasing the atomic density. We propose a novel measurement scheme based on a balanced homodyne detection (BHD). By properly choosing the polarization, phase, and transverse mode of the local oscillator of the BHD, one can independently measure (i) the SHEL shifts of the two spin components; (ii) the spatial and angular shifts; (iii) the transverse and longitudinal shifts. The measurement can reach the quantum limit of precision by detecting signals at the modulation frequency of the electro-optic modulator used to modulate the input probe beam. The precision is estimated to be at the nanometer level limited by the quantum noise.

Abstract:When a spatially limited light beam is reflected and refracted at an interface, its two spin components or the left- and right-circularly polarized beams acquire opposite transverse displacements perpendicular to the plane of incidence. Recently, this novel spin Hall effect of light has attracted much attention. We review the research in this field, focusing especially on the measurement of the separation on the nanometer scale. We have also observed the spin separation of light in the plane of incidence when a line- arly polarized beam is reflected and refracted at a planar dielectric interface. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is observed at the boundary of a microdisk illuminated by circularly polarized vortex beams at normal incidence. The generated chiroptical spectra are tunable for different photonic orbital angular momenta and microdisk diameters. Our findings, correlating photonic spin-orbit interaction with chiroptical responses, may provide a route for exploiting optical information processing, enantioselective sensing, and chiral metrology.

Abstract:Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light—a T-spin–induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin–induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

Abstract:AbstractThe photonic spin Hall effect provides a quantitative way to characterize the spin–orbit interaction of light and enables many applications, such as the precise metrology, since this effect is featured with a spin‐dependent transverse shift of the light beam. This transverse shift is generally nonzero during the reflection/transmission process, and it is sensitive to the polarization and the incident angle of the light beam. By contrast, here it is revealed that for the transmitted light, the transverse shift can be always zero and polarization‐independent, irrespective of the incident angle. The underlying mechanism is that the conversion between the spin and orbit angular momenta of light is fully suppressed during the transmission process. Such an exotic photonic spin Hall effect occurs, if , , and , where t stands for the transmission coefficient and its first (second) superscript represents the polarization of the transmitted (incident) light, and () is the transmitted (incident) angle. These transmission conditions are achievable, e.g., by exploiting an interface only with a chiral surface conductivity. Similarly, a polarization‐independent photonic spin Hall effect is revealed for the reflected light.

Abstract:A novel optical method for high-resolution angle measurement based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is presented. The phase difference between p and s polarization states when SPR takes place is very sensitive to the angle of incidence. Heterodyne interferometry is employed to measure this phase difference and thus to measure small angles. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated. Abstract:The giant photonic spin Hall effect is experimentally demonstrated with nearly 100% efficiency on page 1102 by S. Sun, L. Zhou, and co-workers (Fudan University, China). When linearly polarized light strikes at certain reflective Pancharatnam–Berry metasurfaces designed based on a general criterion, the reflected wave splits into two spatially separated beams with different circular polarizations. This finding will stimulate many interesting applications based on the high-efficiency manipulation of the spin of light.

Abstract:Spin pumping induced inverse spin Hall effect (SP-ISHE) measurement is a widely used technique for searching of materials with strong charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. However, it is actually still not easy to obtain reliable quantitative ISHE voltage (VISHE) in most of the current widely used SP-ISHE experiment setups. In order to solve this problem, we proposed a SP-ISHE measurement approach employing an air-substrate micro-strip waveguide device, that has been proved to be better than widely used coplanar waveguide (CPW), from both the viewpoints of convenience for sample wiring and reliability for achieved VISHE.
