Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) with high efficiency and controllable transmission is widely pursued. In the paper, we designed a dielectric metasurface that could yield spin splitting effect with energy transfer efficiency up to 84%. Switching the output photonic spin states is realized by controlling the polarization azimuthal angle of the incident light. Introducing a background phase gradient, we also propose a high-efficiency asymmetric PSHE metasurface that could give rise to arbitrary transmission angles for the left and right circularly-polarized light. These results are numerically validated, which are of the significance in guiding the design of high-performance photonic spin manipulation devices. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:We demonstrate the photonic spin Hall effect in a system comprising designable liquid crystal materials. The photoalignment technique provides an effective approach to control the directors of the liquid crystal molecules. Twisting structures with different transverse distributions are conveniently introduced into the liquid crystal plates for tailoring the spin–orbit coupling process to present various photonic spin Hall effect phenomena. The light–matter interaction in the twisting mediums is described with a Schrödinger-like equation. The photonic spin Hall effect considered in the study is explained as the result of an effective magnetic field acting on a pseudospin. Moreover, owing to the designability of the liquid crystal system, it is a potential platform for Hamiltonian engineering. Several valuable multiple quantum systems are possible to be presented in classical analogies.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) with high efficiency is of significance for the application of spin photonic devices, but the spin-dependent separation induced by the refraction or reflection at the interface of the media is too tiny to be used in practice. In this paper, we realize a PSHE by designing off-axis polarization singularity in free space and reveal the relationship between controllable spin-orbit coupling and orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectra of the off-axis vector beam. The numerical simulations and experimental results show that the spin-dependent separated distance and the OAM spectra are manipulated by the embedded position and polarization order of polarization singularity, and the separating direction perpendicular to the off-axis direction of polarization singularity. Our work provides a feasible and simple path for manipulating spin photons toward information processing based on optical spintronics.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect, originating from photonic spin-orbit interactions, has attracted considerable research interest due to its potential for applications in spin-controlled nanophotonics. However, most research efforts have focused only on 1D modulation, including transverse or longitudinal spin-dependent splitting. Here, a novel method is proposed for multidimensional spin-dependent splitting on a single-layer dielectric metasurface. Due to the interplay of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and dynamic phase, the longitudinal focusing and transverse shifting of the different spin state photons can be simultaneously achieved. Moreover, the conjugated characteristic of the modulated phases of Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurfaces for different spin photons can be broken, and both symmetric and asymmetric transverse spin-dependent splitting are obtained with the proposed method. This method can be used for the multidimensional and flexible manipulation of spin photons and has potential in spin-controlled nanophotonics, ranging from optical communication to beam shaping and optical sensors.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect of light, associated with spin-orbit interactions, describes a transport phenomenon with optical spin-dependent splitting, leading to a plethora of applications such as sensing, imaging, and spin-controlled nanophotonics. Although geometric meatsurfaces can mimic photonic spin Hall effect by spatially splitting left-hand circularly polarized and righthand circularly polarized states of electromagnetic waves with anomalous refraction or reflection angles, the geometric phase generated by metasurfaces hinders metalenses to realize simultaneous focusing of different spin states, limiting further applications. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to realizing a spin Hall metalens that can focus terahertz waves with different spin states and flexibly manipulate spindependent focal points in multiple spatial dimensions based on a pure geometric phase. A dielectric metasurface consisting of micropillars with identical shape and different in-plane orientations is designed to realize the multidimensional manipulation of photonics spin Hall effect in terahertz region. Furthermore, helicity-dependent imaging is demonstrated by the terahertz spin Hall metalens. The uniqueness and robust approach for manipulating spin photons may have a significant impact on designing ultra-compact and multifunctional devices and spin photonics devices.

Abstract:We report the realization of tunable spin-dependent splitting in intrinsic photonic spin Hall effect. By breaking the rotational symmetry of a cylindrical vector beam, the intrinsic vortex phases that the two spin components of the vector beam carries, which is similar to the geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase, is no longer continuous in the azimuthal direction, and leads to observation of spin accumulation at the opposite edge of the beam. Due to the inherent nature of the phase and independency of light-matter interaction, the observed photonic spin Hall effect is intrinsic. Modulating the topological charge of the vector beam, the spin-dependent splitting can be enhanced and the direction of spin accumulation is switchable. Our findings may provide a possible route for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons, and enables spin-based photonics applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a novel photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), to the best of our knowledge, at an interface between air and uniaxial crystal, whose optical axis is within the interface plane. Owing to the anisotropy of the crystal, partial cross polarization conversion occurs. For a horizontally polarized paraxial Gaussian beam incidence, a linear polarization gradient forms along the in-plane wavevector in the reflected beam, allowing us to achieve spin separation in real space. The spin separation of the reflected beam can be tuned by rotating the optical axis of the crystal. A maximum spin-dependent displacement up to 0.45 times the incident beam waist is obtained at Brewster incidence. This novel anisotropy-induced PSHE deepens the understanding of spin–orbit interaction and provides a new way for control of spin photons.

Abstract:We demonstrate spin-induced manipulation of surface-plasmon polariton (SPP) by exploiting the plasmonic spin Hall effect. By constructing metasurfaces with plasmonic atoms and varying spin-dependent geometric phase, we establish a holographic interface between an incident plane wave and the SPP on an optical chip. It allows us to gain spin-splitting and flexible control of the shapes and phases of the local SPP orbitals. Furthermore, a linearly polarized incident light with rotating polarization angle can be used to play a motion picture of the orbitals. These investigations provide a feasible route to many applications, including spin-enabled imaging, data storage and integrated optics.

Abstract:Spin Hall effect of light, which is normally explored as a transverse spin-dependent separation of a light beam, has attracted enormous research interests. However, it seems there is no indication for the existence of the longitudinal spin separation of light. In this paper, we propose and experimentally realize the spin separation along the propagation direction by modulating the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase. Due to the spin-dependent divergence and convergence determined by the PB phase, a focused Gaussian beam could split into two opposite spin states and focuses at different distances, representing the longitudinal spin separation. By combining this longitudinal spin separation with the transverse one, we experimentally achieve the controllable spin-dependent focal shift in three dimensional space. This work provides new insight on steering the spin photons and is expected to explore novel applications of optical trapping, manipulating and micromachining with higher degree of freedom.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate a switchable spin Hall effect (SHE) of light in reflection near the Brewster angle at an air-uniaxial crystal interface. We find a large transverse spin splitting near the Brewster angle, whose sign can be altered by rotating the optical axis. As an analogy of the SHE in an electronic system, a switchable spin accumulation in the SHE of light is detected. We are able to switch the direction of the spin accumulation by adjusting the optical axis angle of the uniaxial crystal. These findings may give opportunities for photon spin manipulating and developing a new generation of nano-photonic devices.

Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) provides new opportunities for achieving spin-based photonics applications. However, flexibly manipulating the spin-dependent splitting (SDS) of photonic SHE and imposing extra phase modulation on the two spin components are always a challenge. Here, a controllable SHE mechanism based on phase function construction is reported. It is concluded that the phases with specific functional structures performing a coordinate translation are equivalent to integrating a gradient phase to the original phases. Hence, the original phase can be used for independent phase modulation, and the gradient phase originating from the coordinate translation is capable of manipulating the SDS. A metasurface with Pancharatnam–Berry phase that can impose conjugate phases to the two spin components of light is fabricated to verify this mechanism. By shifting the light position, the SDS is continuously manipulated in the visible region, which is successfully used for detecting the polarization ellipticity. The extra phase modulation is also performed with the original phase and thus enables measuring singular beams. It is anticipated that the controllable SHE manipulation method may open new avenues in the fields of spin photonics, optical sensing, optical communications, etc.

Abstract:Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams whose polarization with a tunable spatial inhomogeneity can contribute to steering the space-variant PBP which creates a spin-dependent geometric phase gradient, thereby possibly realizing a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting. Our scheme provides a convenient method to manipulate the spin photon. The results can be extrapolated to other physical system with similar topological origins.

Abstract:Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase has become an effective tool to realize the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) in recent years, due to its capacity of enhancing the spin-orbit interaction. Various forms of PSHEs have been proposed by tailoring the PB phase of light, however, the propagation trajectory control of the separated spin states has not been reported. In this paper, we realize the oscillated spin-dependent separation by using the well-designed PB phase optical elements based on the transverse-to-longitudinal mapping of Bessel beams. Two typical oscillated PSHEs, i.e., the spin states are circulated and reversed periodically, are experimentally demonstrated with two PB phase elements fabricated with liquid crystal. The displacements and periods of these oscillations can be controlled by changing the transverse vector of the input Bessel beam. The proposed method offers a new degree of freedom to manipulate the spin-dependent separation, and provides technical supports for the application in spin photonics.

Abstract:Utilizing the spin degree of freedom breaks new ground for designing photonic devices. Seeking out a suitable platform for flexible steering of photonic spin states is a critical task. In this work, we demonstrate a versatile Liquid crystal (LC) based platform for manipulating photonic spin and orbital states. Owing to the photoalignment technique, the local and fine tuning of the LC medium is effectively implemented to form various anisotropic microstructures. The light-matter interaction in the corresponding medium is tailored to control the evolution of photonic spin states. The physical mechanism of such a system is investigated, and the corresponding dynamical equation is obtained. The high flexibility endows the LC-based photonic system with great value to be used for Hamiltonian engineering. As an illustration, the optical analogue of intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) in electronic systems is presented. The pseudospins of photons are driven to split by the anisotropic effective magnetic field arising from the inhomogeneous spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in the twisting microstructures. In virtue of the designability of the LC-based platform, the form of the interaction Hamiltonian is regulated to present diverse PSHE phenomena, which is hard to be realized in the solid electronic systems. Some representative samples are prepared for experimental observation, and the results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. We believe the tunable LC system may shed new light on future photonic quantum applications.

Abstract:The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is observed at the boundary of a microdisk illuminated by circularly polarized vortex beams at normal incidence. The generated chiroptical spectra are tunable for different photonic orbital angular momenta and microdisk diameters. Our findings, correlating photonic spin-orbit interaction with chiroptical responses, may provide a route for exploiting optical information processing, enantioselective sensing, and chiral metrology.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect (SHE) of light, as an analogue of the SHE in electronic systems, is a promising candidate for investigating the SHE in semiconductor spintronics/valleytronics, high-energy physics and condensed matter physics, owing to their similar topological nature in the spin-orbit interaction. The SHE of light exhibits unique potential for exploring the physical properties of nanostructures, such as determining the optical thickness, and the material properties of metallic and magnetic thin films and even atomically thin two-dimensional materials. More importantly, it opens a possible pathway for controlling the spin states of photons and developing next-generation photonic spin Hall devices as a fundamental constituent of the emerging spinoptics. In this review, based on the viewpoint of the geometric phase gradient, we give a detailed presentation of the recent advances in the SHE of light and its applications in precision metrology and future spin-based photonics.

Abstract:From the viewpoint of classical electrodynamics, we identify the role of spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion in spin Hall effect (SHE) of light. We introduce a distinct separation between spin and orbital angular momenta to clarify the spin–orbital interaction in conventional beam refraction. We demonstrate that the refractive index gradient can enhance or suppress the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion, and thus can control the SHE of light. We suggest that the metamaterial whose refractive index can be tailored arbitrarily may become a good candidate for amplifying or eliminating the SHE of light, and by properly facilitating the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion the SHE may be enhanced dramatically. The transverse spatial shifts governed by the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion, provide us a clear physical picture to clarify the role of refractive index gradient in the SHE of light. These findings provide a pathway for modulating the SHE of light and can be extrapolated to other physical systems.
