Abstract:Self-torque has recently been observed as a novel property of light that features time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) along a light pulse. This property offers an additional degree of freedom for manipulating light fields and light-matter interactions on ultrafast time scales. In this work, we theoretically study the self-torque's role in modulating tightly focused fields and reveal spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) in the focused fields using time-dependent vectorial diffraction theory. It is found that time-varying SOIs occur between the spin angular momentum (SAM), intrinsic OAM and extrinsic OAM. Specifically, the spin-to-orbit conversion, orbit-to-local-spin conversion, and optical spin-Hall effect are observed in the focused self-torqued beams. In particular, when the incident beams are circularly polarized, the time-dependent transverse SAM distributions will appear in the focal plane. Moreover, the self-torque of the focused light fields can be controlled via spin-to-orbit conversion. These observations could benefit potential applications in ultrafast light field modulation, microscopy, and optical manipulation.

Abstract:In this work, by the Richards-Wolf method, which describes the behavior of electromagnetic radiation at the tight focus, it is shown that high-order spin and orbital Hall effects take place in the focal plane. It is shown that when focusing a linearly polarized optical vortex with unit topological charge, four local subwavelength regions are formed in the focal plane, in which directions of the longitudinal projection of the spin angular momentum are opposite in the neighboring regions. That is, photons falling into neighboring regions in the focus have the opposite spin. This is the spin Hall effect of the 2nd order. It is also shown that when tightly focusing of superposition of cylindrical vector beams of the m-th order and zero order, 2m subwavelength regions are formed in the plane of tight focus, in which directions of the longitudinal projection of the orbital angular momentum are opposite in the neighboring regions. That is, photons falling into the neighboring regions at the focus have the opposite-sign on-axis projections of the orbital angular momentum. This is the orbital Hall effect of the m-th order.

Abstract:Using the sensitivity of atomic transitions on the polarizations of pump fields in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic systems, we show the polarization-direction-dependent anisotropic susceptibility of atoms that yields the strong coupling between the spin and the transverse momentum of light, i.e., spin–orbit interaction (SOI). Moreover, we also show that the spin-Hall effect of light can be obtained due to SOI. It can be controlled via the orientation of the anisotropy and frequency of light, and substantially enhanced up to several micrometers, which could be easily observed in experiment.

Abstract:The interaction between a quantum particle's spin angular momentum and its orbital angular momentum is ubiquitous in nature. In optics, the spin-orbit optical phenomenon is closely related with the light-matter interaction and has been of great interest. With the development of laser technology, the high-power and ultrafast light sources now serve as a crucial tool in revealing the behaviour of matters under extreme conditions. The comprehensive knowledge of the spin-orbit interaction for the intense light is of utmost importance. Here, we achieve the in-situ modulation and visualization of the optical orbital-to-spin conversion in strong-field regime. We show that, through manipulating the morphology of femtosecond cylindrical vector vortex pulses by a slit, the photons' orbital angular momentum can be controllably transformed into spin after focusing. By employing strong-field ionization experiment, the orbital-to-spin conversion can be imaged and measured through the photoelectron momentum distributions. Such detection and consequent control of spin-orbit dynamics of intense laser fields have implications on controlling the photoelectron holography and coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation.
Role of Refractive-Index Gradient in Spin Hall Effect of Light

Abstract:In this paper, we try to identify the role of refractive-index gradient in spin Hall effect (SHE) of light from the viewpoint of classical electrodynamics. We demonstrate that the refractive index gradient can enhance or suppress the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion, and thus control the SHE of light. Under the limit of ultra-large refractive index gradient, the polarization-dependent transverse shift is found to tend to a saturation value. The polarization-dependent shift is governed by the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion, clearly clarifying the role of refractive index gradient in the SHE. We suggest that the ultra-low or ultra-high index metamaterial may become a viable candidate for amplifying the SHE of light, and by properly facilitating the spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion the SHE may be enhanced dramatically. These findings provide an important pathway for controlling the SHE of light, and thereby open up the possibility for developing new nano-photonic devices.
Temporal effect on tight focusing, optical force and spin torque of high-order vector-vortex beams

Abstract:We theoretically study the dependence of the light field distributions, optical force and spin torque of high-order vector-vortex (HOVV) beams focused by a high numerical aperture objective on ultrafast variable time (0–400 fs). It is accomplished by the fast Fourier transform, time-dependent vectorial diffraction theory and Rayleigh scattering model. Firstly, it is shown that the light field patterns of tightly focused HOVV beams can be quasi-periodically reshaped by adjusting the intrinsic fleeting time. We further examine the three-dimensional (3D) distributions of optical force on a Rayleigh particle (with a size much smaller than the light wavelength) in the focal volume induced from tightly focused HOVV beams, which reveals that the distinct vector-vortex light fields as a function of ultrafast time endow the capability of the selective trapping for particles. Beyond that, we proceed to the 3D spin torque on the given particle, which makes the conversions between transverse and longitudinal spin torques possible, resulting in the 3D spatial rotation within an ultrafast timescale. Additionally, it is found that the vortex order plays a pivotal role in steering the focused light fields and related optical forces and spin torques. The proposed pathway and acquired results not only provide a novel degree of freedom for the ultrafast control of light fields, but also have potential applications in integrated spectroscopic analysis, ultrafast optical tweezers and spanners, and high-speed optical measurements.

Abstract:The optical spin Hall effect, as an optical analogue of spin-orbit coupling of fermionic electrons, has attracted increasing interest in fundamental physics and nanophotonic applications. In addition to spin, charge of particles, as the other degree of freedom, plays a significant role in spin-orbit interaction as well. However, the optical counterpart of charge conjugation has been absent due to the charge-free nature of photons. Here, in a one-dimensional photonic crystal, we report reversible optical spin currents from the opposite band edges of the photonic band gap, which can provide an optical analogue of charge conjugation in spin-orbit coupling. The effective magnetic field acting on the photons is controlled by the tunable splitting of the transverse electric and transverse magnetic optical modes, which is confirmed by both experiment and simulation. Based on the tunable effective magnetic field, the optical spin current can be controlled by the tunable cavity length in an open cavity. Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) with high efficiency is of significance for the application of spin photonic devices, but the spin-dependent separation induced by the refraction or reflection at the interface of the media is too tiny to be used in practice. In this paper, we realize a PSHE by designing off-axis polarization singularity in free space and reveal the relationship between controllable spin-orbit coupling and orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectra of the off-axis vector beam. The numerical simulations and experimental results show that the spin-dependent separated distance and the OAM spectra are manipulated by the embedded position and polarization order of polarization singularity, and the separating direction perpendicular to the off-axis direction of polarization singularity. Our work provides a feasible and simple path for manipulating spin photons toward information processing based on optical spintronics.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect is a manifestation of the spin-orbit interaction of light and can be measured by a transverse shift delta of photons with opposite spins. The precise measurement of transverse shifts can enable many spin-related applications, such as precise metrology and optical sensing. However, this transverse shift is generally small (i.e., delta/lambda < 10(-1), where A is the wavelength), which impedes its precise measurement. To date, proposals to generate a giant spin Hall effect (namely, with delta/lambda > 10(2)) have severe limitations, particularly its occurrence only over a narrow angular cone (with a width of Delta theta < 1 degrees). Here we propose a universal scheme to realize the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect with Delta theta > 70 degrees by exploiting the interface between free space and uniaxial epsilon-near-zero media. The underlying mechanism is ascribed to the almost-perfect polarization splitting between s and p polarized waves at the designed interface. Remarkably, this almost-perfect polarization splitting does not resort to the interference effect and is insensitive to the incident angle, which then gives rise to the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect.
A comprehensive study of the Spin-Hall effect of tightly focused linearly polarized light through a stratified medium in optical tweezers

Abstract:The optical Spin-Hall effect originates from the interaction between the spin angular momentum (SAM) and extrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, leading to mutual interrelations between the polarization and trajectory of light in case of non-paraxial fields. Here, we extensively study the SHE and the resultant Spin-Hall shifts (SHS) in optical tweezers (OT) by varying the numerical aperture of objective lenses, and the refractive index (RI) stratification of the trapping medium. Indeed, we obtain much larger values of the SHS for particular combinations of NA and stratification compared to the sub-wavelength orders typically reported. We also observe that the longitudinal component of the spin angular momentum (SAM) density - which is responsible for the spin of birefringent particles in optical tweezers - changes more-or-less monotonically with the lens numerical aperture, except around values of the latter where the angle subtended by the focused light equals the critical angle for a particular RI interface. Our results may find applications in designing experiments for tuning the SHS and SAM induced due to SOI to generate exotic optomechanics of trapped particles in optical tweezers.

Abstract:The spin-orbit interaction of light has been extensively examined in reflection and refraction at diverse optical interfaces, which results in the discovery of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE). The fundamental physical essence of this effect is attributed to the one-order effect of polarization rotation associated with one-dimensional geometric phase gradient. Here, we report a unified frame of high-order photonic SHE, which is related to the two-order effect in spin-orbit interaction of light and two-dimensional geometric phase gradient. The conventional one-order photonic SHE is associated with the global transport of the wave vector in momentum space, while the high-order photonic SHE is attributed to the local transport. Direct experimental observation of high-order photonic SHE has been demonstrated in three conventional cases of focusing, diffraction, and scattering. Under the focusing and diffraction conditions, the edge-enhanced images based on the high-order photonic SHE can be realized by inserting two crossed polarizers into a nonparaxial optical system. Under the scattering condition, the confocal imaging system is introduced to observe the high-contrast image and motion trajectory of dynamic transparent particles. Abstract:We propose an optical means to realize the spin-Hall effect (SHE) in a neutral atomic system by coupling the internal spin states of atoms to radiation. The interaction between the external optical fields and the atoms creates effective magnetic fields that act in opposite directions on "electrically'' neutral atoms with opposite spin polarizations. This effect leads to a Landau level structure for each spin orientation in direct analogy with the familiar SHE in semiconductors. The conservation and topological properties of the spin current, and the creation of a pure spin current are discussed.

Abstract:The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is observed at the boundary of a microdisk illuminated by circularly polarized vortex beams at normal incidence. The generated chiroptical spectra are tunable for different photonic orbital angular momenta and microdisk diameters. Our findings, correlating photonic spin-orbit interaction with chiroptical responses, may provide a route for exploiting optical information processing, enantioselective sensing, and chiral metrology.

Abstract:AbstractThe photonic spin Hall effect provides a quantitative way to characterize the spin–orbit interaction of light and enables many applications, such as the precise metrology, since this effect is featured with a spin‐dependent transverse shift of the light beam. This transverse shift is generally nonzero during the reflection/transmission process, and it is sensitive to the polarization and the incident angle of the light beam. By contrast, here it is revealed that for the transmitted light, the transverse shift can be always zero and polarization‐independent, irrespective of the incident angle. The underlying mechanism is that the conversion between the spin and orbit angular momenta of light is fully suppressed during the transmission process. Such an exotic photonic spin Hall effect occurs, if , , and , where t stands for the transmission coefficient and its first (second) superscript represents the polarization of the transmitted (incident) light, and () is the transmitted (incident) angle. These transmission conditions are achievable, e.g., by exploiting an interface only with a chiral surface conductivity. Similarly, a polarization‐independent photonic spin Hall effect is revealed for the reflected light.

Abstract:The giant photonic spin Hall effect is experimentally demonstrated with nearly 100% efficiency on page 1102 by S. Sun, L. Zhou, and co-workers (Fudan University, China). When linearly polarized light strikes at certain reflective Pancharatnam–Berry metasurfaces designed based on a general criterion, the reflected wave splits into two spatially separated beams with different circular polarizations. This finding will stimulate many interesting applications based on the high-efficiency manipulation of the spin of light.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), as an exotic analogy to the spin Hall effect in electronics, is induced by the spin-orbit interaction of light and manifests itself as a spin-related splitting of left- and right-handed circularly polarized beams. Recently, the PSHE has been revealed and explored in a wide range of fields such as optical interfaces, metasurfaces/metamaterials, near-field optics, topological and disordered systems, as well as non-Hermitian photonics. Significantly, the PSHE provides the unique spin degrees of freedom to flexibly control light, which has enabled tremendous applications in precise metrology, spin-based nanophotonic devices, and mathematical operations, to name only a few. Also, new methods to manipulate and enhance this effect have been actively pursued. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the key aspects in the PSHE, especially the underlying physics, new techniques of manipulations, and emerging applications. Our review can not only help new researchers of this field in a timely manner but also inspire more efforts in making and engineering PSHE-based devices in coming years.
