Abstract:Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light—a T-spin–induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin–induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

Abstract:We report an experiment showing the submillimeter Imbert-Fedorov shift from the ultrastrong spin orbital angular momentum coupling, which is a photonic version of the spin Hall effect, by measuring the reflection of light from the surface of a birefringent symmetrical metal cladding planar waveguide. The light incidents at a near-normal incident angle and excites resonant ultrahigh-order modes inside the waveguide. A 0.16-mm displacement of separated reflected light spots corresponding to two polarization states is distinguishable by human eyes. In our experiment, we demonstrate the control of polarizations of light and the direct observation of the spin Hall effect of light, which opens an important avenue towards potential applications for optical sensing and quantum information processing, where the spin nature of photons exhibits key features.

Abstract:When a spatially limited light beam is reflected and refracted at an interface, its two spin components or the left- and right-circularly polarized beams acquire opposite transverse displacements perpendicular to the plane of incidence. Recently, this novel spin Hall effect of light has attracted much attention. We review the research in this field, focusing especially on the measurement of the separation on the nanometer scale. We have also observed the spin separation of light in the plane of incidence when a line- arly polarized beam is reflected and refracted at a planar dielectric interface. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The giant photonic spin Hall effect is experimentally demonstrated with nearly 100% efficiency on page 1102 by S. Sun, L. Zhou, and co-workers (Fudan University, China). When linearly polarized light strikes at certain reflective Pancharatnam–Berry metasurfaces designed based on a general criterion, the reflected wave splits into two spatially separated beams with different circular polarizations. This finding will stimulate many interesting applications based on the high-efficiency manipulation of the spin of light.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate a switchable spin Hall effect of light（SHEL） in reflection for three specific dispersion relations at an air-anisotropic metamaterial interface.The displacements of horizontal and vertical polarization components vary with the incident angle at different dispersion relations.The transverse displacements can be obtained with the relevant metamaterial whose refractive index can be arbitrarily tailed.The results of the SHEL in the metarnaterial provide a new way for manipulating the transverse displacements of a specific polarization component.

Abstract:AbstractThe photonic spin Hall effect provides a quantitative way to characterize the spin–orbit interaction of light and enables many applications, such as the precise metrology, since this effect is featured with a spin‐dependent transverse shift of the light beam. This transverse shift is generally nonzero during the reflection/transmission process, and it is sensitive to the polarization and the incident angle of the light beam. By contrast, here it is revealed that for the transmitted light, the transverse shift can be always zero and polarization‐independent, irrespective of the incident angle. The underlying mechanism is that the conversion between the spin and orbit angular momenta of light is fully suppressed during the transmission process. Such an exotic photonic spin Hall effect occurs, if , , and , where t stands for the transmission coefficient and its first (second) superscript represents the polarization of the transmitted (incident) light, and () is the transmitted (incident) angle. These transmission conditions are achievable, e.g., by exploiting an interface only with a chiral surface conductivity. Similarly, a polarization‐independent photonic spin Hall effect is revealed for the reflected light.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect (SHE) of light is very weak because of the extremely small photon momentum and spin-orbit interaction. Here, we report a strong photonic SHE resulting in a measured large splitting of polarized light at metasurfaces. The rapidly varying phase discontinuities along a metasurface, breaking the axial symmetry of the system, enable the direct observation of large transverse motion of circularly polarized light, even at normal incidence. The strong spin-orbit interaction deviates the polarized light from the trajectory prescribed by the ordinary Fermat principle. Such a strong and broadband photonic SHE may provide a route for exploiting the spin and orbit angular momentum of light for information processing and communication.

Abstract:We present a solution to the problem of reflection and refraction of a polarized Gaussian beam at the interface between the transparent medium and the chiral metamaterials. Some unusual spin Hall effects of reflected and transmitted light have been found. It is shown that the spin-dependent displacements of the reflected beam centroid can not only reach several tens of wavelengths at certain incident angles; the reversed effect for the transmitted beams can also be realized by tuning the chiral parameters. These findings provide an alternative pathway for controlling the spin Hall effects of light and thereby open up the possibility for developing new nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:The metasurface with elliptical nano-structures containing doubly degenerate geometrical charge is designed to investigate the enhanced spin-orbit optical interactions, numerically as well as experimentally. It is found that localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance with orbital angular momentum (i.e., rotating SP vortex mode carrying extrinsic orbital angular momentum) can be induced under linearly polarized illumination. On the contrary, the LSP resonance without orbital angular momentum is formed under circularly polarized illumination. Moreover, based on the different LSP modes as results of spin-orbit interaction with alternative geometrical charge, directional propagations of surface plasmon polariton in two orthogonal trajectories depending on spin states of the incident light are presented with experimental demonstration, a phenomenon called photonic spin Hall effect.

Abstract:We show that the spin Hall effect of light upon reflection of one-dimensional photonic crystal with a defect layer can be enhanced significantly with a spin-dependent transverse displacement of the beam centroid of several wavelengths of light which is much larger than those reported previously, for horizontal- and vertical-polarization incidence. Under the condition of abrupt phase changes of reflection coefficients however, the spin Hall effect of light could be completely suppressed. Further, we demonstrate that, by tuning the optical parameters of the defect layer, the spin Hall effect of light upon reflection can be switchable for any incident angle and polarization of incidence.

Abstract:We discuss the issue of reflection and refraction of a polarized Gaussian beam at the interface between a transparent medium and a chiral metamaterial.Some unusual spin Hall effects of the reflected and transmitted light have been found.It is shown that the spin-dependent displacements of the reflected beam centroid can not only reach several tens of wavelengths at certain incident angles,but also the reverse effect for the transmitted beams can be realized by tuning the chiral parameters.We also discuss the issue of reflection and refraction of a polarized Gaussian beam at the interface between the dielectric medium and the moving medium.The Imbert-Fedorov shifts of the reflected and transmitted beams can reach several wavelengths of incident beam at a certain velocity when the slab moves perpendicularly to the incident plane.These findings provide a pathway for controlling the spin Hall effects of light.

Abstract:The finite electromagnetic vector is achieved by factorizing into a mapping matrix and a Jones vector.The vectorial property can be described by a degree of freedom of the mapping matrix that can be determined by the azimuthal angle of a fixed unit vector with respect to the wave vector.The representation formalism of the reflected and transmitted vector light beams is theoretically developed between the interfaces.The transverse shift,which is correlative with the spin Hall effect,is discussed.The transverse shift of the linearly polarized light beam(σ=0) is zero.The transverse shift of the circularly polarized light beam(σ=±1) is maximum and the left and right circularly polarized light beam is the same.The dependence of transverse shift of the left circularly polarized light beam on the incidence angle is algo analyzed.

Abstract:Using the sensitivity of atomic transitions on the polarizations of pump fields in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic systems, we show the polarization-direction-dependent anisotropic susceptibility of atoms that yields the strong coupling between the spin and the transverse momentum of light, i.e., spin–orbit interaction (SOI). Moreover, we also show that the spin-Hall effect of light can be obtained due to SOI. It can be controlled via the orientation of the anisotropy and frequency of light, and substantially enhanced up to several micrometers, which could be easily observed in experiment.

In article number 1800130, Lei Gao and co-workers demonstrate the spin–orbit interaction through the optical singularity of the orbital angular momentum, which redirects the angular momentum around the particle. Meanwhile, the spin Hall shift of scattered light is enhanced. The scattered light appears to be emitted from a displaced object.

Abstract:The polarization controlled optical signal routing has many important applications in photonics such as polarization beam splitter. By using two-dimensional transmission lines with lumped elements, we experimentally demonstrate the selective excitation of guided modes in waveguides composed of two kinds of single-negative metamaterials. A localized, circularly polarized emitter placed near the interface of the two kinds of single-negative metamaterials only couples with one guided mode with a specific propagating direction determined by the polarization handedness of the source. Moreover, this optical spin-orbit locking phenomenon, also called the photonic spin Hall effect, is robust against interface fluctuations, which may be very useful in the manipulation of electromagnetic signals.

Abstract:We establish a general propagation model to describe the spin Hall effect of light beam in left-handed materials (LHMs). A spin-dependent shift of the beam centroid perpendicular to the refractive index gradient for the light beam through an air-LHM interface is demonstrated. For a certain circularly polarized component, whether the transverse shift is positive or negative depends on the magnitude of the refractive index gradient. Very surprisingly, the spin Hall effect in the LHM is unreversed, although the sign of refractive index gradient is reversed. The physics underlying this counterintuitive effect is that the spin angular momentum of photons is unreversed. Further, we reveal that the angular shift in the LHM is reversed due to the negative diffraction. These findings provide alternative evidence for that the linear momentum of photons is reversed, while the spin angular momentum is unreversed in the LHM.

Abstract:The origin of spin-orbit interaction of light at a conventional optical interface lies in the transverse nature of the photon polarization: The polarizations associated with the plane-wave components experience slightly different rotations in order to satisfy the transversality after reflection or refraction. Recent advances in topological photonic materials provide crucial opportunities to reexamine the spin-orbit interaction of light at the unique optical interface. Here, we establish a general model to describe the spin-orbit interaction of light in the photonic Dirac metacrystal. We find a giant photonic spin Hall effect near the Dirac points when a Gaussian beam impinges at the interface of the photonic Dirac metacrystal. The giant photonic spin Hall effect is attribute to the strong spin-orbit interaction of light, which manifests itself as the large polarization rotations of different plane-wave components. We believe that these results may provide insight into the fundamental properties of the spin-orbit interaction of light in the topological photonic systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we have demonstrated a three-layer structure to explore the characteristics of spin Hall effect of light (SHEL). It is assumed that the structure is made of a semiconductor metamaterial which consists of \(\mathrm {GaAs}\) and \(\mathrm {SiO}_{2}\) periodically and cladded with two different dielectrics, glass and \(\mathrm {TiO}_{2}\). We investigated in detail how the spin Hall effect of reflected light at glass-semiconductor metamaterial is tuned after being exposed to an external magnetic field due to the magneto-optical effects. The Faraday and Voigt effects on the vertical and horizontal shifts of SHEL are calculated and discussed. The results show that magneto-optical effects have significantly enhanced or weakened the behavior of SHEL but the way of impact is different. This simple structure proposed in the paper can be used for yielding meaningful results for studying more complex systems related to SHEL.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect (SHE) of light in layered nanostructures is investigated theoretically in this paper. A general propagation model describing the spin-dependent transverse splitting in the SHE of light is established from the viewpoint of classical electrodynamics. We show that the transverse displacement of wave-packet centroid can be tuned to either a negative or a positive value, or even zero, by just adjusting the structure parameters, suggesting that the SHE of light in layered nanostructures can be enhanced or suppressed in a desired way. The inherent secret behind this interesting phenomenon is the optical Fabry-Perot resonance in the layered nanostructure. We believe that these findings will open the possibility for developing new nano-photonic devices.
