Abstract:It is well known that the spin Hall effect of light (SHEL) can be easily observed via weak measurement by the dark strip resulted from the splitting of different polarization components. We find that the SHEL of partially coherent beam (PCB) also has similar phenomenon. However, the existence of the dark strip in the SHEL of PCB can not be properly justified by considering the beam as a statistical assemble of coherent speckles. Also, the dark strip of PCB is not purely dark. By analyzing the autocorrelation of the central dark strip part of the SHEL of PCB, we show that SHEL of PCB is essentially the direct result of overlapping coherent speckles' SHEL. Then we further prove our conclusion by adjusting the converging level and the incident angle of the beam. Finally, we develop a qualitative theory by taking the intensity distribution of PCB into account, to fully clarify the SHEL of PCB. The feasibility of our theory to Goos-H\"anchen (GH) scenario is also demonstrated.
Controllable spin-Hall and related effects of light in an atomic medium via coupling fields

Abstract:We show the existence of spin-Hall effect of light (SHEL) in an atomic medium which is made anisotropic via electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is made birefringent by applying an additional linearly polarized coupling light beam. The refractive index and the orientation of the optics axis are controlled by the coupling beam. We show that after transmitting the atomic medium, a linearly polarized probe light beam splits into its two spin components by opposite transverse shifts. With proper choice of parameters and atomic density of about $2.5times10^{17},mathrm{m}^{-3}$, the shifts are about the order of wavelength and can be larger than the wavelength by increasing the atomic density. We propose a novel measurement scheme based on a balanced homodyne detection (BHD). By properly choosing the polarization, phase, and transverse mode of the local oscillator of the BHD, one can independently measure (i) the SHEL shifts of the two spin components; (ii) the spatial and angular shifts; (iii) the transverse and longitudinal shifts. The measurement can reach the quantum limit of precision by detecting signals at the modulation frequency of the electro-optic modulator used to modulate the input probe beam. The precision is estimated to be at the nanometer level limited by the quantum noise.

Abstract:The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is observed at the boundary of a microdisk illuminated by circularly polarized vortex beams at normal incidence. The generated chiroptical spectra are tunable for different photonic orbital angular momenta and microdisk diameters. Our findings, correlating photonic spin-orbit interaction with chiroptical responses, may provide a route for exploiting optical information processing, enantioselective sensing, and chiral metrology.

Abstract:In the spin Hall effect of light (SHEL) with an incident linear polarization, the left circularly polarized (LCP) and the right circularly polarized (RCP) spin components are transversely shifted to opposite sides of the incident plane. We find that each spin component of the reflected or the refracted light is actually the coherent superposition of a pair with the same handedness. The two parts in a pair are generated by both the incident LCP and RCP components, respectively, and have different transverse shifts. Their weighted shifts lead to the overall displacement of the corresponding spin component. This perspective can successfully elucidate the dependence of the SHEL spin separations on the angle of polarization of the incident electric field.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that it is possible to directly observe the resolvable spin separation in the spin Hall effect of light at an air-glass interface by choosing optimal parameters. When a P-polarized light with a beam waist of 10 μm is incident around Brewster's angle, the two spin components of the reflected beam can be completely separated by eliminating the influence of the in-plane wavevector spread. This not only obviously reveals the strong impacts of the polarization state, the incident angle, the beam waist, and the in-plane wavevector spread, but also intuitively visualizes the observation of the spin Hall effect of light.

Abstract:Hall effects have been employed as sensitive detectors of magnetic fields and magnetizations. In spintronics, exotic phenomena often emerge from a non-equilibrium spin polarization or magnetization, that is very difficult to measure directly. The challenge is due to the tiny total moment, which is out of reach of superconducting quantum interference devices and vibrating sample magnetometers or spectroscopic methods such as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Kerr effect is sufficiently sensitive only in direct gap semiconductors, in which the Kerr angle can be resonantly enhanced. Here we demonstrate that even one excess spin in a million can be detected by a Hall effect at room temperature. The novel Hall effect is not governed by the spin Hall conductivity but by its energy derivative thereby related to the spin Nernst effect.

Abstract:The spin Hall effect of a light beam is essentially a product of circular birefringence but is rarely demonstrated. Here, we provide a scheme for initiating off-axis circular birefringence based on the spin-dependent wave vector bifurcation of Bessel beams via a single liquid crystal Pancharatnam–Berry phase element. The tilted Bessel beam shows a detectable photonic spin Hall effect. By introducing the nonlinear propagation trajectories, the spin Hall effect is greatly enhanced. More surprisingly, the two spin states exactly propagate along the scaled trajectories, enabling flexible control of the spin separation. This phenomenon is also applicable to other Bessel-like beams with nonlinear trajectories, which have been already reported.

Abstract:The giant photonic spin Hall effect is experimentally demonstrated with nearly 100% efficiency on page 1102 by S. Sun, L. Zhou, and co-workers (Fudan University, China). When linearly polarized light strikes at certain reflective Pancharatnam–Berry metasurfaces designed based on a general criterion, the reflected wave splits into two spatially separated beams with different circular polarizations. This finding will stimulate many interesting applications based on the high-efficiency manipulation of the spin of light.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect is a manifestation of the spin-orbit interaction of light and can be measured by a transverse shift delta of photons with opposite spins. The precise measurement of transverse shifts can enable many spin-related applications, such as precise metrology and optical sensing. However, this transverse shift is generally small (i.e., delta/lambda < 10(-1), where A is the wavelength), which impedes its precise measurement. To date, proposals to generate a giant spin Hall effect (namely, with delta/lambda > 10(2)) have severe limitations, particularly its occurrence only over a narrow angular cone (with a width of Delta theta < 1 degrees). Here we propose a universal scheme to realize the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect with Delta theta > 70 degrees by exploiting the interface between free space and uniaxial epsilon-near-zero media. The underlying mechanism is ascribed to the almost-perfect polarization splitting between s and p polarized waves at the designed interface. Remarkably, this almost-perfect polarization splitting does not resort to the interference effect and is insensitive to the incident angle, which then gives rise to the wide-angle giant photonic spin Hall effect.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect, referring to the spatial separation of photons with opposite spins due to spin-orbit interactions, has enabled potential for various spin-sensitive applications and devices. Here, using scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscopy, we observe spin-orbit interactions introduced by a subwavelength semiring antenna integrated in a plasmonic circuit. Clear evidence of unidirectional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons is obtained by direct comparison of the amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field maps of the plasmonic nanocircuit under excitation with photons of opposite spin states coupled to a plasmonic nanoantenna. We present details of the antenna design and experimental methods to investigate the spatial variation of complex electromagnetic fields in a spin-sensitive plasmonic circuit. The reported findings offer valuable insights into the generation, characterization, and application of the photonic spin Hall effect in photonic integrated circuits for future and emerging spin-selective nanophotonic systems.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect of light beams reflected from the surfaces of various two-dimensional hexagonal crystalline structures, considering their associated time-reversal $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion $\mathcal{I}$ symmetries, is investigated. Employing the Haldane model with tunable parameters as a generic model, we examine the longitudinal and transverse spin-separations of the reflected beam in both topological non-trivial and trivial systems. The study reveals that the sign switching of the PSHE in these materials is attributed to the non-trivial and trivial topology. By manipulating the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and external electric fields, we demonstrate topological phase transitions in buckled Xene monolayer materials through the photonic spin Hall effect. Different behaviors of the photonic spin Hall effect are observed in various topological phases within these materials. Additionally, we explore the reflected spin and valley-polarized spatial shifts in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. The photonic spin Hall effect in buckled Xene monolayer materials and transition metal dichalcogenides is highly influenced by the spin and valley degrees of freedom of charge carriers, offering a promising avenue to explore spintronics and valleytronics in these hexagonal materials. We propose that the photonic spin Hall effect in Haldane materials can serve as a metrological tool for optical parameter characterization and as a promising method for determining Chern numbers and topological phase transitions through direct optical weak measurement techniques.

Abstract:Using the sensitivity of atomic transitions on the polarizations of pump fields in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic systems, we show the polarization-direction-dependent anisotropic susceptibility of atoms that yields the strong coupling between the spin and the transverse momentum of light, i.e., spin–orbit interaction (SOI). Moreover, we also show that the spin-Hall effect of light can be obtained due to SOI. It can be controlled via the orientation of the anisotropy and frequency of light, and substantially enhanced up to several micrometers, which could be easily observed in experiment.

Abstract:AbstractThe photonic spin Hall effect provides a quantitative way to characterize the spin–orbit interaction of light and enables many applications, such as the precise metrology, since this effect is featured with a spin‐dependent transverse shift of the light beam. This transverse shift is generally nonzero during the reflection/transmission process, and it is sensitive to the polarization and the incident angle of the light beam. By contrast, here it is revealed that for the transmitted light, the transverse shift can be always zero and polarization‐independent, irrespective of the incident angle. The underlying mechanism is that the conversion between the spin and orbit angular momenta of light is fully suppressed during the transmission process. Such an exotic photonic spin Hall effect occurs, if , , and , where t stands for the transmission coefficient and its first (second) superscript represents the polarization of the transmitted (incident) light, and () is the transmitted (incident) angle. These transmission conditions are achievable, e.g., by exploiting an interface only with a chiral surface conductivity. Similarly, a polarization‐independent photonic spin Hall effect is revealed for the reflected light.

Abstract:We propose and realize a simple technique to measure the tiny spin Hall effect of light from the ratio of the minimum and the maximum intensities along two cross-polarization directions, without the requirement of a position-sensitive detector in the conventional weak measurement. Furthermore, the weak intensity ratio is dramatically amplified by purposely choosing the intensity along the direction close to that of the minimum instead of the maximum along the perpendicular polarization direction, which is verified by the experimental results. In principle, this method also can be modified for measurement of the high extinction ratio of a polarizer.

Abstract:When a spatially limited light beam is reflected and refracted at an interface,its two spin components or the left-and right-circularly polarized beams acquire opposite transverse displacements perpendicular to the plane of incidence.Recently,this novel spin Hall effect of light has attracted much attention.We review the research in this field,focusing especially on the measurement of the separation on the nanometer scale.We have also observed the spin separation of light in the plane of incidence when a linearly polarized beam is reflected and refracted at a planar dielectric interface.The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical analysis.
