Abstract:MgO-based mixture is a promising candidate for CO2 capture due to its high theoritical capture capacity, noncorrosiveness, low cost and wide availability. In this work, the effects of preparation methods and sorption conditions on the characteristics of MgO-Na2CO3 are studied. A stable MgO conversion of 0.32 for CO2 sorption is obtained during the 30-cycle tests at 400 degrees C, 2 MPa, where the material exhibits a strong skeleton structure with increased specific surface area when prepared by the ball-milling method. A severe sorption condition of 500 degrees C, 3 MPa is also tested, where the material shows a stable MgO conversion of 0.3 after 20 cycles. With the increase of Na2CO3 content in the mixture, a higher MgO conversion can be achieved, but the cyclic stability will be impaired. In addition to the experiments, density function theory calculations are conducted to explore the sorption mechanism of MgO-Na2CO3, where CO2 adsorptions on the pure, the Na-doped, and the Na2CO3-MgO co-adsorption surfaces are compared. The defect is found to help induce electrons from the Na and Mg atoms to the CO2 molecule, thus benefiting the CO2 adsorption process. The presence of Na2CO3 also benefits the adsorption process of MgO due to its electrostatic interaction with CO2 molecules. This work can serve as the guideline for the design of MgO-based CO2 absorbent especially for extreme operating conditions.
Promotion of MgO Sorbents with Eutectic Carbonate Doping for High-Temperature and Pressure CO2 Capture

Abstract:MgO-based sorbents are promising candidates for CO2 capture as they are widely available and feasible in thermodynamics, but the development of MgO-based sorbents operating at elevated temperature and pressure is still a challenging task due to sintering. Herein, we selected eutectic carbonates with high melting point as promoters for the application under elevated conditions. Among various eutectic carbonates, MgO with eutectic ternary LiNaK carbonate (ETC) doping exhibited the highest MgO conversion thanks to crystal defects based on the XRD analysis. The highest CO2 capture capacity of 0.73 gCO2/gsorbent was obtained with 20 wt% ETC at 400 degrees C and 2 MPa. With further elevation of operating parameters to 540 degrees C and 5 MPa, the sample still shows a stable MgO conversion of 0.69 after 30 cycles, where the material exhibits a porous structure that inhibits the sintering. The density function theory calculations reveal that the LiNaK doping lowers the formation energy of surface oxygen vacancy, providing possibility for the subsequent oxygen ion migration. The deep K incorporation is most effective to promote the oxygen ion diffusion with decreased oxygen ion migration energy barrier from 3.68 to 2.04 eV. This study can guide the design of high-performance CO2 sorbents at wider application conditions.

Abstract:MgO-based sorbents are promising candidates for precombustion CO2 capture performed at elevated temperature and pressure in thermodynamics, where the development of efficient sorbents is of great importance. Herein, we report MgO-Na2CO3-KNO3 sorbents with fast sorption kinetics, high capture capacity and good cyclic stability at elevated conditions. The effects of nitrate species, Na2CO3 doping amounts and sorption conditions on the MgO conversion were investigated during cyclic test. In comparison with LiNO3 and NaNO3, the sample with KNO3 possesses the highest MgO conversion, which increases from 0.78 to 0.86 after 30 cycles with sorption at 400 ?C, 2 MPa. For nitrate-promoted MgO, Na2CO3 plays an essential role in the initial fast sorption rate. The sorbent with 60 mol%Na2CO3 possesses the highest MgO conversion of 0.89 after 30 cycles. Moreover, during the operation range of 400 degrees C-480 degrees C, 2 MPa, the sorbent exhibits an excellent cyclic stability with porous structure. Density functional theory calculations are further conducted to investigate the mechanism of performance improvement brought by Na2CO(3). We find dissolved CO32- ions will provide chemisorption sites through the formation of C(CO2)-O(CO32-) bonds and can serve as the CO(2 )carrier in molten nitrate salts, thus improving both sorption and diffusion rates of CO2.
Ultrafast and Stable CO 2 Capture Using Alkali Metal Salt-Promoted MgO-CaCO 3 Sorbents.

Abstract:As a potential candidate for pre-combustion CO2 capture at intermediate temperatures (200-400 °C), MgO-based sorbents usually suffer from low kinetics and poor cyclic stability. Herein, a general and facile approach is proposed for the fabrication of high-performance MgO-based sorbents via incorporation of CaCO3 into MgO followed by deposition of a mixed alkali metal salt (AMS). The AMS-promoted MgO-CaCO3 sorbents are capable of adsorbing CO2 at an ultrafast rate, high capacity and good stability. The CO2 uptake of sorbent can reach as high as above 0.5 gCO2 gsorbent-1 after only 5 min of sorption at 350 °C, accounting for vast majority of the total uptake. In addition, the sorbents are very stable even under severe but more realistic conditions (desorption in CO2 at 500 °C), where the CO2 uptake of the best sorbent is stabilized at 0.58 gCO2 gsorbent-1 in 20 consecutive cycles. The excellent CO2 capture performance of the sorbent is mainly due to the promoting effect of molten AMS, the rapid formation of CaMg(CO3)2 and the plate-like structure of sorbent. The exceptional ultrafast rate and good stability of the AMS-promoted MgO-CaCO3 sorbents promise high potential for practical applications such as pre-combustion CO2 capture from integrated gasification combined cycle plants and sorption-enhanced water gas shift process.

Abstract:Rapid and strong CO2 capture is critical in CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) techniques to mitigate global warming. Alkali molten salt (AMS) promoted-MgO sorbents with high capacity attracted attention, but their applications suffer from various limitations of low adsorption kinetics and poor stability. Here, AMS-promoted MgO sorbents corporation with Fe2O3 (Mg100-xFex-AMS10) were fabricated via modified methanol evaporation-induced surface precipitation for use in rapid and stable CO2 capture. Based on characterization of the sorbents, Mg98Fe2-AMS10 showed a loose flake structure, with a large surface area and numerous exposed active sites. Therefore, Mg98Fe2-AMS10 exhibited a strong CO2 capacity (14.86 mmolCO2/gsorbent at 300 °C) and good cyclic durability. Three kinetic models were explored, and the Avrami model provided a good prediction of the CO2 adsorption behavior, with Mg98Fe2-AMS10 exhibiting rapid adsorption kinetics. The adsorption mechanism was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The charge transfer and bonding strengths of the surface O atoms on MgO increased, and these atoms preferentially bonded with activated CO2 (CO2 ∙−) under Fe catalysis. This study may provide insights into enhancing the CO2 capture and kinetics of MgO via combination with 3d transition metals.

Abstract:CaO-based CO2 sorbents derived from various calcium and aluminum precursors were prepared by a wet mixing method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques. The as-prepared sorbents consisted of active CaO and inert support materials that could be Al2O3, Ca12Al14O33 or Ca9Al6O18, depending on calcium and aluminum precursors used during the preparation process. A formation mechanism for the inert support materials was proposed. Compared to pure CaO, most of the synthetic CaO-based sorbents showed much higher CO2 capture capability and stability over multiple carbonation/calcination cycles, which was ascribed to the relatively high specific surface area of the sorbents, the bimodal pore-size distribution with a fair number of small pores, and the inert support material that can effectively prevent or delay sintering of CaO particles. Among these synthetic sorbents the CaO–Ca9Al6O18 sorbent with a CaO content of 80wt% (weight fraction) derived from calcium citrate and aluminum nitrate exhibited the best performance for CO2 capture, and can be expected to be applied in the sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming process.

Abstract:CO2 capture and sequestration is one of the viable solutions to reduce the CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion, and sorption-enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS) is a promising technology for pre-combustion CO2 capture. In this study, a novel alkali metal salt (AMS)-promoted MgO-CaCO3 sorbent was applied to the SEWGS process, and this sorbent exhibited fast sorption rate, high capacity and good stability in 30 CO2 capture cycles. Catalyst and sorbent particles were arranged in a layer-by-layer alternating configuration in the reactor. The effects of operating conditions such as temperature, pressure and initial H2O/CO molar ratio were investigated, and the thermodynamic equilibrium analyses of the CO2 sorption on AMS-promoted MgO-CaCO3 and the SEWGS process in the layered configuration were carried out, based on which the optimization of the reactor configuration was performed. A high-purity H-2 (99.4% in dry basis) was experimentally achieved in the SEWGS process at 573 K, 12 atm and an initial H2O/CO molar ratio of 1.5 with a three catalyst/sorbent layered configuration, and the cyclic stability was demonstrated over 10 consecutive SEWGS cycles.

Abstract:Carbonate looping using MgO-based materials has recently ignited the scientific interest for CO 2 capture at intermediate temperatures (275-375°C), with the main limitation being the slow carbonation kinetics of MgO. Molten alkali nitrates and metal carbonates have been identified as promoters that provide an alternative reaction mechanism for enhanced carbonation rate. However, the evaluation of the ability of these materials to effectively remove CO 2 from a gas feed under realistic reactor configurations is still required. This study investigated the CO 2 capture performance of magnesite-derived MgO promoted with limestone and molten Li, Na and K nitrates under carbonate looping conditions in a fixed bed reactor. The CO 2 capture efficiency was enhanced in the presence of H 2 O, by increasing the gas-solid contact time and by decreasing the carbonation temperature. The evaluation demonstrated that ∼75% CO 2 stripping of a gas feed with 30% CO 2 concentration at 275°C and a space velocity of 300 h -1 is possible, a performance that highlights and expands the potential and possible applications of MgO-based materials.

Abstract:The optimization of MgO-based adsorbents as advanced CO2 -capture materials is predominantly focused on their molten-salt modification, for which theoretical and experimental contributions provide great insights for their high CO2 -capture performance. The underlying mechanism of the promotion effect of the molten salt on CO2 capture, however, is a topic of controversy. Herein, advanced experimental characterization techniques, including in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (eTEM) and CO2 chemisorption by diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), transient 18 O-isotopic exchange, and density functional theory (DFT), are employed to elucidate the mechanism of the CO2 interaction with molten-salt-modified MgO in the 250-400 °C range. Herein, eTEM studies using low (2-3 mbar) and high (700 mbar) CO2 pressures illustrate the dynamic evolution of the molten NaNO3 salt promoted and unpromoted MgO carbonation with high magnification (<50 nm). The formation of 18 O-NaNO3 (use of 18 O2 ) and C16 O18 O following CO2 interaction, verifies the proposed reaction path: conversion of NO3 - (NO3 - → NO2 + + O2- ), adsorption of NO2 + on MgO with significant weakening of CO2 adsorption strength, and formation of [Mg2+ … O2- ] ion pairs preventing the development of an impermeable MgCO3 shell, which largely increases the rate of bulk MgO carbonation.

Abstract:Molten nitrate-promoted MgO-based sorbents represent a potential class of materials for CO2 capture at intermediate temperatures. However, their poor stability under harsh but realistic regeneration conditions (e.g., at high temperatures in pure CO2) is a challenge for the application of CO2 capture. In this work, a series of NaNO3 and/or Li3PO4 promoted MgO and MgO-CaCO3 sorbents were prepared, characterized, and evaluated. The results showed that the NaNO3-Li3PO4 promoted MgO-CaCO3 sorbents had high CO2 adsorption performance in terms of rate, capacity and stability, which was attributed to the promoting effect of Li3PO4 and CaCO3. Li3PO4 can enhance the surface adsorption of CO2 by providing some extra moderate basic sites, while CaCO3 can accelerate the carbonation reaction of bulk MgO via the formation of CaMg(CO3)2. In addition, Li(3)PO(4 )can hinder the sintering of sorbent particles, and consequently improve the stability of the sorbent. The optimized sorbent had a stable CO2 uptake of 0.12 (or 0.26) g(CO2)/g(sorbent) when 30% (or pure) CO2 was used at the adsorption stage in long-term cyclic operation (desorption at 500 C in pure CO2 for both cases), showing promising applications in intermediate-temperature CO2 capture and thermochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Alkali metal salts (AMS) promoted MgO with high CO2 uptakes represents a promising adsorbent candidate for CO2 capture. The AMS-MgO composite adsorbents are facing the challenges of increased pressure drop or elutriation when employed in dual fixed-bed reactor or twin circulating fluidized-bed configurations. Granulation by the extrusion-spheronization technique represents an effective problem-solving strategy. However, textural properties and CO2 uptakes of MgO-based adsorbent pellets might be adversely affected by the granulation process. In this work, AMS-MgO composite adsorbent pellets were prepared by the extrusion-spheronization method. Citric acid (CA), ammonium bicarbonate (AB), urea (UA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MC) were employed as pore-forming templates to improve the porous structures and CO2 uptakes of the AMS-MgO pellets. CO2 uptakes and adsorption kinetics of the adsorbent pellets were studied using a fixed-bed reactor. Effects of granulation and pore templating on the structure-performance relationships of the AMS-MgO pellets were unraveled. Granulation had resulted in the remarkable decrease in CO2 uptake from 10.87 to 4.24 mmol CO2/g due to the impaired textural parameters. The employed sacrificial templates endowed the AMS-MgO pellets with enhanced CO2 uptakes and improved carbonation kinetics. This was associated with extended surface area and expanded pore structures due to gas liberation in the pyrolysis of templates, which had facilitated the kinetics of CO2 bulk diffusion. The desired AMS-MgO-MC pellet modified with MC template showed a high CO2 uptake of 7.54 mmol CO2/g in 50%CO2 at 340 °C, and its CO2 uptake was stabilized around 5.0 mmol CO2/g within 20 cycles. Besides, the AMS-MgO-MC pellet also exhibited good mechanical properties. The results will guide the rational design of highly efficient and robust MgO-based adsorbent pellets for CO2 capture applications.

Abstract:MgO shows promise as a CO2 sorbent material for the intermediate temperature range. Here, a hybrid computation scheme, xDH:GGA that combines the XYG3-type of doubly hybrid (xDH) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functionals, is applied. It aims to provide an accurate description of molecular-surface interactions to reduce calculation uncertainties in exploring CO2 capture mechanisms for MgO-based systems. After validating the accuracy of the hybrid scheme by modeling CO adsorption on both MgO(100) and NaCl(100) surfaces against the experimental results, CO2 capture in wet conditions is examined. The results highlight the importance of competitive adsorption between CO2 and water, which undermines the significance of the conventionally identified active sites on MgO surfaces. In contrast, the intermediate Mg(OH)2 layer emerges as a more viable active phase, whose presence was experimentally observed, where the layered structure of Mg(OH)2 is found to kinetically retard water dissociative adsorption. In addition to surface areas and pore structures, our study emphasizes the pivotal role played by selective CO2 chemical adsorption in the development of effective CO2 sorbent materials.
Nanosheet Mgo-Based Co2 Sorbent Promoted by Mixed-Alkali-Metal Nitrate and Carbonate: Performance and Mechanism

Abstract:A series of nanosheet MgO-based sorbents promoted by mixed-alkali-metal nitrate and carbonate were prepared by a simple precipitation-deposition method and applied to CO2 capture. The structural properties of these sorbents were characterized by various techniques, and their CO2 capture performance was evaluated using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Compared to the sorbent derived from commercial MgO, the nanosheet MgO-based sorbent had faster and higher CO2 uptake, because of its thin-sheet structure. Among various alkali-metal-salt-promoted nanosheet MgO, the sorbents promoted with mixed-alkali-metal nitrates (LiNO3 and KNO3) and carbonates (Na2CO3 and K2CO3) exhibited a high total CO2 uptake at a respectable rate. In particular, the sorbent with a MgO content of 73 wt % and a nitrate/carbonate molar ratio of 2 possessed the highest total CO2 uptake and the best cyclic stability, with a total uptake of 0.52 g(CO2)/g(sorbent) and MgO conversion of 65% after 20 cycles (60 min of absorption in 40% CO2/60% N-2 at 350 C, 15 min of regeneration in 100% N-2 at 400 C). Based on the structure-activity relationship of the sorbents, a possible mechanism consisting of three stages was presented for the CO2 absorption process, in which the dissolution of CO2 and carbonation in the molten nitrate played an important role.
Reversible Multi‐Complexation of CO2 to Alkaline Earth Metal Ion‐Pair at 400 ppm and 298 K

Abstract:The efficient capture of low-pressure CO2 remains a significant challenge due to the lack of established multi-complexation of CO2 to active sites in microporous materials. In this study, we introduce a novel concept of reversible multi-complexation of CO2 to alkaline earth metal (AEM) ion pairs, utilizing a host site in ferrierite-type zeolite (FER). This unique site constrains two AEM ions in proximity, thereby enhancing and isotopically spreading their electrostatic potentials within the zeolite cavity. This electrostatic potential-engineered micropore can trap up to four CO2 molecules, forming M2+–(CO2)n–M2+ (n = 0-4, M = Ca, Sr, Ba) complexes, where each CO2 molecule is stabilized by interactions between terminal oxygen (Ot) in CO2 and the AEM ions. Notably, the Ba2+ pair site exhibits higher thermodynamic stability for multiple adsorptions due to the optimal binding mode of Ba2+–Ot–Ba2+. Through high-accuracy energy calculations, we established the relationship among structure, CO2 uptake, and operating temperature/pressure, demonstrating that the Ba2+ pair site can reversibly capture four CO2 molecules even at concentrations as low as 400 ppm and at 298 K. The findings in the present study provide a new direction for developing efficient CO2 adsorbents.

Abstract:The CaO-based sorbents are considered to be promising candidates for capturing CO2 from postcombustion of fossil fuels, and how to improve the sintering-resistant performance of the sorbents at high temperature is a challenge for researchers. In this paper, a series of CaO-based sorbents, which consisted of active CaO and inert Ca9Al6O18 acting as the support matrix, was synthesized by a sol-gel method with various calcium precursors. The structural properties of the resulting sorbents were characterized by N-2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) techniques, showing that the sorbents prepared by the sol-gel method possessed small grains, interconnected pore network as well as uniform distribution of CaO and Ca9Al6O18. These features gave rise to enhanced CO2 capture performance of the synthetic sorbents compared to pure CaO. In particular, the sorbent with a CaO content of 90 wt % (weight fraction) derived from calcium lactate displayed the best performance for CO2 capture during a long-term cyclic operation, whose CO2 capture capacity remained as high as 0.59 gco(2)/g(sorbent) at the 35th carbonation-calcination cycle. Finally, this sorbent was applied to the sorption-enhanced steam methane reforming process for hydrogen production, and all the conversion or concentration profiles obtained in 10 consecutive reforming-regeneration cycles almost overlapped, further demonstrating the excellent performance of the sol-gel-derived CaO-based sorbent.
Sol–gel-Derived Synthetic CaO-Based CO2 Sorbents Incorporated with Different Inert Materials

Abstract:A series of CaO-based sorbents incorporated with different inert materials (Ca2SiO4, Ca3Al2O6, CaTiO3, CaZrO3, and MgO) were prepared by a simple citrate solgel method. The structureproperty relationship of the sorbents was explored, and the cyclic CO2 capture capacity and stability of the sorbents were evaluated. It was found that the complexation time, dispersion agent, calcium precursor, and inert material had significant effects on the sorbent structure and performance. The best CaO-based sorbent stabilized by CaZrO3 (29.1 wt %) had a stable CO2 capture capacity of 0.45 g(CO2)/g(sorbent) over 30 consecutive cycles, which was mainly ascribed to the small grains, accessible pores, and homogeneous distribution of CaO and CaZrO3 in the sorbent. Under severe but more realistic conditions (10 min of carbonation in 15% CO2/N-2 at 650 degrees C, 5 min of calcination in 80% CO2/N-2 at 1000 degrees C), this sorbent exhibited a constant capacity of 0.16 g(CO2)/g(sorbent) (carbonation conversion of 29%) after 50 cycles.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide capture and mitigation form a key part of the technological response to combat climate change and reduce CO2 emissions. Solid materials capable of reversibly absorbing CO2 have been the focus of intense research for the past two decades, with promising stability and low energy costs to implement and operate compared to the more widely used liquid amines. In this review, we explore the fundamental aspects underpinning solid CO2 sorbents based on alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides operating at medium to high temperature: how their structure, chemical composition, and morphology impact their performance and long-term use. Various optimization strategies are outlined to improve upon the most promising materials, and we combine recent advances across disparate scientific disciplines, including materials discovery, synthesis, and in situ characterization, to present a coherent understanding of the mechanisms of CO2 absorption both at surfaces and within solid materials.

Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO) is considered a promising candidate for CO2 capture owing to its high theoretical capacity, low price, and high working temperature. However, one key issue associated with CaO is its low cyclic stability during long-term CO2 capture cycles due to particle agglomeration. Here, we introduced low-cost MgAl2O4, Y3+-MgAl2O4 spinels, and La3+-MgAl2O4 spinels into CaO as structural supports to enhance its CO2 capture stability. XPS and EPR analyses show that there were more structure defects in Y3+-MgAl2O4 and La3+-MgAl2O4, which could improve the initial kinetics. The spinels and ion-doped spinels were found to significantly improve the CO2 capture performances, including both capture stability and carbonation kinetics, providing a new strategy for the development of CaO-based materials. CaO@La3+-MgAl2O4 sorbents had the most enhanced CO2 capture stability, namely 0.50 g-CO2/g-sorbent after 10 cycles or a capacity retention of 75.8% (over 48.6% for pristine CaO), which resulted from the improved antisintering property. Moreover, the carbonation rate constants of each CO2 capture cycle, composed of an initial chemically controlled region and a further diffusion-controlled region, were analyzed by a gas-solid reaction model. This further demonstrated that the restrained material sintering via the introduction of spinels could enhance the reaction between CaO and CO(2 )in both regions.

Abstract:MgAl-hydrotalcite adsorbent has received great attention due to its sufficiently high carbon dioxide adsorption capacity at elevated temperatures (250~450 ℃) during the water-gas shift process. In this study, MgAl-hydrotalcite was impregnated with K2CO3 to increase the alkalinity of adsorbent, aiming at enhancing CO2 sorption uptake. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to investigate the effect of calcination temperature, K2CO3 amount and adsorption temperature on the equilibrium CO2 sorption uptake. Coupled with the help of X-ray diffractometry and N2 gas physisorption analysis, the results showed that the optimal calcination temperature for a maximum equilibrium CO2 sorption uptake was 400 ℃ and the optimal ratio of K2CO3 in the samples was 0.25: 1 by weight. Moreover, repeated adsorption/desorption cycles experiments by potassium-promoted MgAl-hydrotalcite adsorbent were conducted and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was applying to further investigate the mechanism of CO2 sorption enhancement on K2CO3-promoted hydrotalcite. The results showed that adsorption of CO2 for MgAl-hydrotalcite adsorbents was reversible and regeneration of adsorbents can be realize by altering CO2 partial pressure.
