Abstract:Compressive strain hardening and microstructure evolution in AZ40 alloy without rare earth (RE) elements and AE42 with RE elements have been examined and comparatively discussed. Compressive stress-strain curves indicated strain hardening rates in the early regime of of radial direction (RD) samples were significantly higher than these of extrusion direction (ED) samples for both AZ40 and AE42 alloys. AE42 magnesium alloys showed a much higher plastic anisotropy during compression due to texture hardening effects and profuse extension twinning. Thicker {10–12} twins with a higher area fraction were observed in AE42 alloy and intersecting multiple {10–12} twin variants were revealed in AZ40 magnesium alloys. {10–12} twins transversed low angle grain boundaries in AE42, while thin extension twins terminated at grain boundaries in AZ40.
