Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase beta-NaYE4:Yb3+/Er3+ thin films composed of hexagonal prism structures were made by an anode electrodeposition from aqueous solution and low temperature annealing. The in-situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and cyclic voltammetry methods were applied to studied the mechanism of electrodeposition of NaYF4 films. The hexagonal phase NaYE4:Yb3+/Er3+ films exhibited much higher intense green and red emissions excited by 980 nm laser than its cubic phase counterpart and two-photon upconversion mechanism was involved. Abstract:Usually, up-conversion (UC) green emission is easily observed by using rare-earth doped fluoride nanocrystals. However, preferential red emission is desired for some actual applications especially in biological field. Here, we demonstrated that the dominant UC red emission can be realized by preparing TiO2:Yb,Er nanocrystals under 980 nm exciation. By controlling the crystal symmetry and size via the annealing temperature and Yb3+ ions concentration, the enhanced UC red emission is achieved. The multi-photon relaxation and cross-relaxation mechanisms may be responsible for the energy transform process and in turn the UC emission.

Abstract:Well dispersed orthorhombic structure KYb2F7:2 mol.%Er3+ and KYb3F10:2 mol.%Er3+ nanoparticles were synthesized through solvothermal method. Measurements of X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and upconversion spectra showed excellent morphology and optical properties of the as-prepared samples. The intensity ratio of the red emission(650 nm) to the green emission(545 nm) in these two materials was much stronger than that in other Er3+ doped materials. The transition mechanism of the processes was investigated and discussed. Due to their strong red emission, the samples are promising for applications in display, color tuning, and biolabeling.

Abstract:Red emission with high color purity in Y2Ti2O7:Yb3+,Er3+ material is successfully obtained by high-concentration doping of Yb3+ and Er3+ under 980 and 1550nm excitation based on the special layer structure of pyrochlore crystal. It shows that Yb3+ ion content and excitation wavelength greatly influence the red emission percent of total up-conversion luminescence intensity of Y2Ti2O7:Yb3+,Er3+. Y2Ti2O7:Yb3+,Er3+ shows much better red color purity at 1550nm excitation than at 980nm. Furthermore, the co-doping of Yb3+ ions considerably boosts the red emission under 980 or 1550nm pumping with different luminescence mechanisms compared with Y2Ti2O7:Er3+ sample. The red emission percent of total up-conversion luminescence intensity gradually increases with the increment of Yb3+ concentration at both excitation sources. The red-to-green emission ratio of the sample is 6.97 (980nm) and 23.26 (1550nm) when the Yb3+ content is 30mol%.

Abstract:The Er 3+ -Yb 3+ codoped Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles with an average particle size of about 50 nm have been synthesized by an arc discharge synthesis method. The green and red up-conversion emissions centered at about 526, 547 and 677 nm, corresponding respectively to the 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 , 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 transitions of Er 3+ , were detected by a 978-nm semiconductor laser diode excitation. The Annealing has evident effect on the up-conversion emissions of the samples: The red up-conversion emission is noticeable before annealing; however, the green up-conversion emission becomes predominant after annealing. The mixture of (Er,Yb) 3 Al 5 O 12 and α-(Al,Er,Yb) 2 O 3 phases is more favorable for green up-conversion emissions due to an enhancement of the ESA (I) of 4 I 11/2 +a photon→ 4 F 7/2 and ET (III) of 2 F 5/2 (Yb 3+ )+ 4 I 11/2 (Er 3+ )→ 2 F 7/2 (Yb 3+ )+ 4 F 7/2 (Er 3+ ) processes. The two-photon absorption up-conversion process is involved in the green and red up-conversion emissions. The results have proved that arc discharge synthesis is a new promising preparation technology for optical materials.

Abstract:High color purity red emission with single band successfully achieved in a new Er3+ , Tm3+ co-doped Y2Ti2O7 system under 1550 nm excitation, value of red to green emission ratio of the samples is more than 10(3) . Efficient up-conversion luminescence can be obtained while the I-4(13/2) level of Er3+ pumped by 1500 nm directly based on the large absorption section and long luminescence lifetime, and red emission composition will greatly enhanced by co-doping with Tm3+ ions, color purity of red emission under 1550 nm excitation is much higher than that of 980 nm. The quenching concentration of Er3+ ions is up to 28 mol% in Y(2)Ti(2)O(7 )rely on the layer distribution of cations, which can further improve the red emission color purity.

Abstract:Internal OH- defects always cause significant depletion of excitation energy for low upconversion efficiency; however, preventing the incorporation of OH- into the crystal lattice is very difficult during the synthesis of upconversion crystals. In this work, red upconversion emission is dramatically enhanced in Er3+-sensitized hexagonal NaLuF4 (β-NaLuF4) microcrystals through a collaborative effect of ion exchange and Tm3+ doping. The ion exchange can not only maintain the morphology very well but also strongly reduce the internal OH- defects, which can enhance the upconversion luminescence due to improved excitation energy harvesting and red to green (R/G) ratio due to intense cross-relaxation. Doping of Tm3+ as an energy trapping center not only regulates the red emission output but also reduces the excitation energy loss. β-NaLuF4:Er,Tm microcrystals after ion exchange exhibit stronger red upconversion emission compared with β-NaYF4:Er,Tm and β-NaGdF4:Er,Tm counterparts. Moreover, fluorescent labeling of the fingerprint pattern printed from β-NaLuF4:Er,Tm microcrystals with stable and intense red fluorescence has been demonstrated under 980 nm excitation.

Abstract:A novel Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+,Yb3+ up-conversion phosphor was synthesized via solid-state reaction method. The up-conversion luminescence properties of the phosphor excited by 1550nm laser diode were investigated. Results showed that the characteristic emission peaks of Er3+ were located at 530, 550, 675, and 810 nm, which correspond to the transitions of H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), and I-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively. The up-conversion mechanisms were systematically studied through concentration and laser power dependence of the up-converted emissions. An evident tuning effect of Yb3+ on the luminescence of the phosphor was observed. An efficient red emission with high purity was obtained through the Er3+ -> Yb3+ -> Er3+ energy transfer process, and the intensity ratio of the red and green emissions could reach 62.28. Therefore, Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+,Yb3+ can be an excellent up-conversion red emitter. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:NaY(WO4)(2) is one of the excellent host materials for high-efficient upconversion luminescence, but it is still challenging to obtain red emission via lanthanide doping. In this work, pure red emission was achieved in the heavily-Er3+-doped NaY(WO4)(2) by using a 1550 nm laser diode and introducing mediator Tm3+ ions in the lattice. On basis of the analysis of steady-state and transient-state luminescence properties related to dopant concentration and excitation wavelength, all possible red emission mechanisms were discussed. Finally, it has been demonstrated that the high-purity red emission was due to the several energy transfer processes between Er3+ and Tm3+. Our results provide a convenient pathway to investigate the upconversion luminescence mechanisms.

Abstract:For the first time, we have synthesized orthorhombic phase KSc2F7:20% Yb/2% Er (KSc2F7:Yb/Er) nanorods and further studied the crystal structure and morphology evolution, as well as their upconversion (UC) properties under varying F- contents and reaction temperatures. Different from beta-NaYF4:20% Yb/2% Er (NaYF4:Yb/Er) nanorods that usually give strong green UC luminescence, strong red UC emission was observed in KSc2F7:Yb/Er nanorods under 980 nm laser excitation. Their UC mechanisms are further analyzed and compared. This study provides a novel type of rare earth nanorods with strong red UC emissions which have great potential in high resolution 3-dimensional bioimaging, color displays, solid-state lasers, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Near infrared-to-red upconversion phosphors of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped β-Ba2ScAlO5 through equivalent substitution strategy has been prepared. They emit strong red emission at 662 nm under 980 nm NIR laser irradiation. Their red-green integrated intensity ratio can reach up to 82.5. The excitation mechanism of red emission mainly arises from energy transfer that promotes Er3+ from 4I13/2 to 4F9/2 level. The overall emission profile of upconversion luminescence is insensitive to the dopant concentration and pump power. The doping concentrations of Yb3+ and Er3+ in β-Ba2ScAlO5 have been optimized based on the steady state upconversion luminescence and lifetime decay studies. The integrated intensity of the upconverted red emission of β-Ba2ScAlO5:Yb3+, Er3+ displays a linear relationship with the temperature in the wide temperature range from 298 to 523 K, which has promising application in optical thermometry.

Abstract:This study explores a new method to achieve highly efficient red up-conversion luminescence by using Y2O3: Yb, Er pumping with a 1550nm laser diode (Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm). The strongest red emission, with a peak situated at 660nm, can be assigned to Er3+ ion 4I9/2→4I15/2 transition. The radiation brightness of Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm is comparable to that of Y2O3: Yb, Er under an equivalent 980nm pumping density (Y2O3: Yb, Er@980nm). Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm presents a very weak green emission as compared with that of Y2O3: Yb, Er@980nm. Consequently, Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm exhibits much better color purity and excellent color stability with increasing pumping power.

Abstract:Er3+-doped TiO2 thin films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. The effects of Er3+ concentration and annealing conditions upon up-conversion fluorescence were studied. The result shows that 490 nm green emission and 670 nm red emission can be obtained from Er3+-doped TiO2 thin films excited by 980 nm lasers. TiO2 thin films with 1.0 mol% Er3+ manifested the best up-conversion property when the annealing temperature reached 900 °C. Under such conditions, we observed intense 490 nm green emission that has not been observed in powder or sol–gel samples and the mechanism of up-conversion fluorescence were studied. We also confirmed the up-conversion properties are closely related to the formation of Er2Ti2O7 in thin films, which is proved to reduce state densities of phonons and therefore inhibit nonradiative transition in an up-conversion process.

Abstract:The upconversion luminescence of Y2O2S: Yb, Er under 1550 nm pumping has been investigated. It presents excellent red emission under 1550 nm excitation with an upconversion brightness of more than twice that of Y2O3: Yb, Er under 980 nm excitation. Upconversion luminescence spectrum shows that the strongest NIR peak is situated at 1020 nm, the second strong peak is red emission centred at 690 nm, and the third strong peak is a green band. The red/green fluorescence branching ratio dramatically decreases with an increase in the Er3+ ion concentration or 1550 nm excitation power. Y2O2S: Yb, Er presents green upconversion luminescence under 980 nm excitation. Therefore, red and green two-tone upconversion colour can be created by 1550 and 980 nm excitation, respectively. Moreover, a very wide range of emission colour can be continuously tuned by the joint contribution of altered composition and excitation power. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Pure red fluorescence generated by near infrared (NIR) excitation is desired for bio-imaging with high biological penetration, but without cell damage or multi-photon photo-toxicity. In this work, β-NaYF4:Er3+ and β-NaYF4:Er3+,Tm3+ microcrystals were synthesized using a novel hydrothermal method. β-NaYF4:Er3+ microcrystals exhibited intense green and red up-conversion emissions under 976 nm laser diode excitation. The introduction of Tm3+ ions into β-NaYF4:Er3+ resulted in strong inhibition of green up-conversion emission (Er3+:2H11/2 /4S3/2→4I15/2) and, consequently, red up-conversion emission (Er3+:4F9/2→4I15/2) was significantly promoted. To simultaneously restrain green up-conversion emissions and enhance red up-conversion emissions, the optimal concentrations of Er3+ and Tm3+ ions were determined to be 20 mol% and 2.0 mol%, respectively. The red/green up-conversion emission intensity ratio increased from ~1.80 (β-NaYF4:20Er3+, mol%) to ~78 (β-NaYF4:20Er3+,2Tm3+, mol%) after the addition of 2 mol% Tm3+ ions to β-NaYF4:20Er3+ (mol%). The red up-conversion emission intensity of β-NaYF4:20Er3+,2Tm3+ was stronger than that for commercial red up-conversion phosphors (NaYF4 and ZnF2) under the same experimental conditions. Based on the results of the emission spectra, luminescence rise, and decay profiles, the mechanism of enhanced red up-conversion emission by Tm3+ ion co-doping in β-NaYF4:20Er3+,2Tm3+ (mol%) was proposed. The bio-fluorescence experiment under NIR excitation proves that β-NaYF4:Er3+,Tm3+ microcrystals have potential applications in bio-imaging.
