Abstract:Here we report the successful preparation of upconversion (UC) gadolinium oxysulfate (Gd2O2SO4) hollow nanoparticles with sensitizer Yb3+ and activator Er3+ co-doped through a biomolecule-assisted hydrothermal route and followed by calcination. By changing the experimnetal parameters, including the reaction temperature and surfactant type and concentration, the particle size and morphology can be regulated. Under the excitation of 980nm laser, the red-to-green (R:G) emission intensity ratio is about 21:1, indicating the red emission color of 90%Gd2O2SO4:9%Yb3+,1%Er3+ hollow nanoparticles. The influence of the low temperature on luminescence is interpretated with enegy transfer mechanism. The red emission color and long lifetime at red emission regions enable their promising advanced luminescence microscopy applications.
Simultaneous improvement in emission intensity and spectral purity of red photon upconversion in Gd2O3:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors under 1550 nm excitation

Abstract:Upconversion luminescent nano-materials with both excitation and emission peaks in the "optical window" is of significant importance for application in deeper bio-imaging, due to the weak effects of light absorption, light scattering, and auto-fluorescence. This paper reports an Er3+ self-sensitized red up-converting nanophosphors with improved emission intensity and spectral purity. The influence of Yb3+ concentration on upconversion luminescence properties is investigated comprehensively. Compared with the sample without Yb3+ doping, the luminescence intensity in the sample with 10% Yb3+ is increased by 12.9 times. Moreover, the dominant wavelength at 1550 nm excitation is about 60 nm larger than that excited at 980 nm. It has been demonstrated that Yb3+ co-doping can not only improve the photon absorption at 1550 nm and the probability of red emission, but also suppress other light emissions and phonon emission through the selective population of red-emitting level.

Abstract:The Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Sc2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method. The phase structure and up-conversion properties were investigated using XRD, FESEM and up-conversion spectra. The nanoparticles with the size of about 40 rim emitted red and green light. Yb3+ ions are crucial to adjust the intensity proportion of red and green emission as a sensitizer. In Er3+, Yb3+ co-doping samples, the red emissions are much higher than green and the intensity ratio is up to 56.43, while the green to red intensity ratio is 11.21 with Era(3+) single doping, which both show excellent mono-chromaticity. Strong red emissions are attributed to the cross-relaxation energy transfer and energy back-transfer processes. High Yb3+ ions concentrations induce the red up-conversion saturation, resulting in a near linear laser power dependence, and it can be illustrated based on steady-state rate equations. Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln(3+))-doped nanoparticles that produce strong red upconversion (UC) luminescence are desirable for biological applications. For nanoparticles, modification of their electronic properties and stabilization of their crystallographic phase are crucial for tuning their luminescence behaviors. Here, Yb3+-Er3+ doped Gd2O3 nanoparticles have been synthesized by calcining Gd2O2S in nitrogen (O-2-free) and ambient air (similar to 21% O-2), respectively. Various approaches including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TG-DTA) were used to characterize the structure, morphology and phase formation mechanism of the nanoparticles. Upconversion luminescence properties were investigated by emission intensity vs. excitation power (double logarithmic relationship) and temperature dependent emission spectroscopy. The different splitting transition probabilities of the cubic and/or monoclinic phase, the probability of multiphonon relaxations and cross relaxations between Er3+ ions are responsible for the efficient red emission in the cubic Gd2O3 nanoparticles. More importantly, the lower phonon energy of the pure cubic sample has good thermal stability in the current detectable range of 20-100 degrees C. These results imply that the cubic Gd2O3 upconversion nanoparticles may have multiplexing functionality in bio-imaging.

Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb2Ti207 nanophosphors by Gd3+ codoping with nominal composition of (Er0.05Yb0.95-xGd3+)2Ti2O7 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 0.95) have been prepared by sol-gel method. Er3+-Gd3+ codoped Yb2Ti2O7 was characteristic of a typical face-centered cubic crystal phase, and the unit cell parameter increased linearly with the increase of Gd3+ concentration. Under a 976 nm laser diode excitation, both green and red upconversion emissions were observed and the upconversion emissions were enhanced significantly by Gd3+ codoping, showing the strongest green and red emissions at 80 mol% Gd3+ codoping. The intensity ratio of green to red emissions (Igreen/Ired) increased monotonously with the increase of Gd3+ concentration. The energy transfer between Yb3+ and Er3+ and the variation of local crystal field symmetry of Er3+ by the substitution of Yb3+ by Gd3+ ions led to the improvement of upconversion properties of Er3+-Gd3+ codoped Yb2TiO7 nanophosphors.

Abstract:A new class of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles are presented that are without Yb3+ or Nd3+ sensitizers in the host lattice. In erbium-enriched core-shell NaErF4 :Tm (0.5 mol %)@NaYF4 nanoparticles, a high degree of energy migration between Er3+ ions occurs to suppress the effect of concentration quenching upon surface coating. Unlike the conventional Yb3+ -Er3+ system, the Er3+ ion can serve as both the sensitizer and activator to enable an effective upconversion process. Importantly, an appropriate doping of Tm3+ has been demonstrated to further enhance upconversion luminescence through energy trapping. This endows the resultant nanoparticles with bright red (about 700-fold enhancement) and near-infrared luminescence that is achievable under multiple excitation wavelengths. This is a fundamental new pathway to mitigate the concentration quenching effect, thus offering a convenient method for red-emitting upconversion nanoprobes for biological applications.

Abstract:A rare-earth-based upconversion nanocrystal that exhibits anti-Stokes nature has attracted worldwide attention due to its unique physical properties. In this work, a novel core–active shell upconversion nanocrystal (NaErF4:Tm@NaGdF4:Yb) which emits super-bright red emission upon 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser excitation is presented. The Er3+ ions act as both sensitizers and activators to enable an efficient upconversion process of core nanocrystals. To mitigate the luminescence quenching caused by the energy migration between the Er3+ ions and internal lattice defects, an energy trapping center of Tm3+ was introduced into the core to confine the energy of Er3+ through an energy back transfer (Er3+ → Tm3+ → Er3+) pathway. After that, an active shell of NaGdF4:Yb was grown on the core zone to simultaneously enable the efficient energy transfer from NIR photons to the upconverting zone and suppress the luminescence quenching caused by surface defects and surface associated ligands. It is worth noting that both the Tm3+ and active shell can enhance the red to green (R/G) ratio of the Er3+ emission, thus resulting in an ultra-bright red emission with high purity. The core–active shell nanoparticles possess more intense (∼20 times higher) emission intensity than core–inert shell nanoparticles (NaErF4:Tm@NaGdF4), and their quantum yield reaches as high as 3.71%. This finding paves a convenient way to obtain red-emissive upconversion nanocrystals with high purity for special applications.

Abstract:The tetragonal-phased LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles with different core-shell nanostructures have been successfully synthesized by a modified solution-based method. The upconversion emissions of LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles were precisely tuned from green to red with the increase in Yb3+ concentrations under 980 nm excitation. The corresponding intensity ratios of the red and green emissions (R/G ratios) were enhanced from 0.06 to 5.33. However, the overall integral upconversion intensity of LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles clearly decreased when the Yb3+ doping concentrations were increased. For the enhancement of the red upconversion intensity and expansion of their application, two kinds of core-shell nanostructures, namely, LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYF4 and LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYbF4, were constructed through epitaxial growth at similar experimental conditions. The LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYF4 core-shell nanostructures exhibited stronger upconversion emission and higher R/G ratios than the LiYbF4:Er3+ and LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYbF4 nanoparticles. The highest R/G ratios increased to 6.27 in LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYF4 core-shell nanostructures, increasing 104-fold. The upconversion regulation and enhancing mechanism were also discussed according to the emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes.

Abstract:The synthesis and upconversion luminescence properties upon a 980 nm pump of cubic Lu1.88Yb0.1Er0.02O3 nanocrystals with various shapes, e.g., nanorods, nanosheets, and nanoparticles, are studied. It is observed that with decreasing size of the nanocrystals, the relative intensity of the upconverted red emission (Er3+ : F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2)) to the green one (Er3+: (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)) -> I-4(15/2)) is increased, and a three-photon process involved in the green upconversion, as described by F-4(9/2) (Er) + F-2(5/2) (Yb) -> H-2(9/2) (Er) + F-2(7/2) (Yb), is synchronously enhanced. An analysis based on steady-state rate equations indicates that the results can be induced by a large I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate with a small F-4(9/2) -> I-4(9/2) nonradiative relaxation rate. The large I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate is attributed to the occurrence of efficient cross energy transfer to OH- surface group due to the good energy match. As the size of the nanocrystals decreases, the relative surface area is increased, increasing the number of OH- group that can attach to the surface, therefore, enhancing the I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate through cross energy transfer to OH- surface group.

Abstract:Rare-earth-doped red upconversion nanocrystals (UCNPs) have shown excellent prospects for application in biological imaging, labeling and other fields. In this work, NaErF4@NaYF4 core-shell (CS) UCNPs were successfully constructed to enhance red emission by introducing Yb3+ ions as energy trapping centers under different near-infrared excitation wavelengths. The experimental results showed that the red upconversion emission intensity of NaErF4@ NaYF4 CS UCNPs doped with 15%Yb3+ ions in the core is nearly 202 times higher than that of NaErF4 UCNPs under 980 nm excitation wavelength, with a red/green emission intensity ratio of 18.7. When Yb3+ ions were introduced into the core and shell of NaErF4@NaYF4 CS UCNPs, NaErF4:15%Yb3+@NaYF4:10%Yb3+ CS UCNPs showed the best red emission due to the energy network characteristics of the Yb3+ ions. Furthermore, the enhancement mechanism of red emission in NaErF4@NaYF4 CS UCNPs with different Yb3+ ion doping concentrations were discussed, based on the spectral characteristics and lifetime. It was found that doping of Yb3+ ions in NaErF4@ NaYF4 CS UCNPs can significantly improve the red emission intensity of Er3+ ions through controlling energy migration (EM) and energy back transfer (EBT) processes, which has considerable potential for applications in bioimaging and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:A mechanistic study of upconversion from lanthanides is of great importance for the fundamental research of upconversion materials and their diverse frontier applications. However, the most efficient upconversion of lanthanides is still obtained in a commonly used sensitizer-activator coupled system. Here we report a mechanistic investigation on the upconversion of Er3+ through self-sensitization which is applicable for 808, 980 and 1530 nm excitations. It is found that the cooperative energy transfer upconversion followed by cross-relaxation occurring among Er3+ ions plays a critical role in producing and enhancing the red upconversion for the samples with high dopant concentrations (e.g., > 20 mol%). The red upconversion color can be further purified and enhanced by mediating the upconversion dynamics through introducing the lanthanides of Ho3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+, which can effectively contribute to the population in the red emitting state. Moreover, the energy migration in the Er-sublattice was also found to be a possible origin for quenching upconversion, which was proved and effectively suppressed by designing a tri-layered nanostructure where the distribution of Er3+ is spatially controllable. Our results gain access into the insight of upconversion dynamics in self-sensitization induced upconversion which would help the search for other new kinds of upconversion materials.

Abstract:This study explores a new method to achieve highly efficient red up-conversion luminescence by using Y2O3: Yb, Er pumping with a 1550nm laser diode (Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm). The strongest red emission, with a peak situated at 660nm, can be assigned to Er3+ ion 4I9/2→4I15/2 transition. The radiation brightness of Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm is comparable to that of Y2O3: Yb, Er under an equivalent 980nm pumping density (Y2O3: Yb, Er@980nm). Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm presents a very weak green emission as compared with that of Y2O3: Yb, Er@980nm. Consequently, Y2O3: Yb, Er@1550nm exhibits much better color purity and excellent color stability with increasing pumping power.

Abstract:(Y0.95Er0.05)2O3 single-crystalline nanorods with intense red emission via up-conversion are synthesized by a hydrothermal method under modest reaction conditions. Green and red emissions are observed for both as-synthesized sample and post-treated sample after excitation at 488nm and with upconversion pumping (810nm). The experimental results indicate that the stokes and up-conversion luminescence of the post-treated (500°C for 2h) Y2O3:Er nanorods is more efficient than those of as-prepared materials. The increase of the Stokes luminescence may result from the improved crystallization, smooth surface and uniform diameter distribution. The enhanced red emission via upconversion is due to removal of part of surface contaminants, such as CO32− and OH−. It is believed that a new mechanism is responsible for populating the 4S3/2 and 4F9/2 levels.

Abstract:Usually, up-conversion (UC) green emission is easily observed by using rare-earth doped fluoride nanocrystals. However, preferential red emission is desired for some actual applications especially in biological field. Here, we demonstrated that the dominant UC red emission can be realized by preparing TiO2:Yb,Er nanocrystals under 980 nm exciation. By controlling the crystal symmetry and size via the annealing temperature and Yb3+ ions concentration, the enhanced UC red emission is achieved. The multi-photon relaxation and cross-relaxation mechanisms may be responsible for the energy transform process and in turn the UC emission.
Upconversion Emission Colour Modulation of Y2O2S: Yb, Er under 1.55μm and 980nm Excitation

Abstract:The upconversion luminescence of Y2O2S: Yb, Er under 1550 nm pumping has been investigated. It presents excellent red emission under 1550 nm excitation with an upconversion brightness of more than twice that of Y2O3: Yb, Er under 980 nm excitation. Upconversion luminescence spectrum shows that the strongest NIR peak is situated at 1020 nm, the second strong peak is red emission centred at 690 nm, and the third strong peak is a green band. The red/green fluorescence branching ratio dramatically decreases with an increase in the Er3+ ion concentration or 1550 nm excitation power. Y2O2S: Yb, Er presents green upconversion luminescence under 980 nm excitation. Therefore, red and green two-tone upconversion colour can be created by 1550 and 980 nm excitation, respectively. Moreover, a very wide range of emission colour can be continuously tuned by the joint contribution of altered composition and excitation power. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
