Abstract:The phase equilibria of the ternary Ni-Cr-Zr system and interfacial reactions in the Ni-Cr/Zr couples at 900 °C were determined. Fifty alloys were prepared from pure Ni, Cr, and Zr. The alloys were metallographically analyzed. Both X-ray diffraction and electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) were carried out for structural identification and compositional analysis of phases formed in these alloys. At 900 °C, the Cr-Ni 10 Zr 7 two-phase region divides the system into two halves. ZrCr 2 (C14) exists in the Zr-Cr-Ni 10 Zr 7 half, and the ZrCr 2 (C15) phase has an extensive ternary solubility. In the Cr-Ni 10 Zr 7 -Ni half, except for the Ni 7 Zr 2 phase, most of the binary Zr-Ni compounds are in equilibrium with either Cr or Ni phase. Reaction-couple techniques were used for the interfacial reaction study. The reaction path was Zr/NiZr 2 /NiZr/Ni 10 Zr 7 /Ni 21 Zr 8 /Cr/Ni-Cr alloy in the Ni-Cr/Zr couples examined in this study. The results indicate that Ni is the fastest-diffusing species, while Cr is the slowest one.

Abstract:The isothermal sections of the Ag-Cr-Zr ternary system at 1000 and 750 degrees C were experimentally established. A series of phases as well as their compositions and crystal structures were characterized on the annealed alloys by means of optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Our studies have detected four three-phase regions at both 1 000 and 750 degrees C. (Ag) was observed to exist in the solid state at 750 degrees C, and in the liquid state at 1 000 degrees C. No ternary compound was found in this system. The maximal solubilities of Cr in (Ag), Ag in ZrCr2, and Cr in AgZr2 at 1000 degrees C are 4.12, 2.13, 0.91 at.%, respectively. At 750 degrees C, the solid solubilities of Cr in AgZr, AgZr2, and that of Ag in aZrCr(2) are determined to be about 1 at.%.

Abstract:The finite-temperature density-functional theory and quasiharmonic lattice dynamics are used to calculate the Gibbs free energy and quasiharmonic phonons of the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) and omega (omega) crystal structures for Zr. The hcp phonon dispersions agree with experiment; the omega phonon dispersions have not been measured yet. From the free energy, the volume thermal expansion coefficients of alpha-Zr are predicted. The calculated volume thermal expansion coefficients for alpha-Zr are in good agreement with the experiment data at T>100 K. Our calculated results found that at zero-temperature the lowest-energy phase is not the omega but the hcp phase. This conclusion is in accordance with the result of Schnell and Albers, but in disagreement with those of Ahuja and Jona and Marcus. The predicted phase boundary of alpha ->omega is in good agreement with the available experiment; however, other theoretical results are far from the experiment at high temperatures.

Abstract:In the present work, the phase equilibria of the Cr-Nb-Ru system at 1100 ℃ were investigated via a combination of diffusion triple and equilibrated alloys. The samples were examined by means of X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The isothermal section of the Cr-Nb-Ru ternary system at 1100 ℃ was constructed, which consists of 11 single-phase regions, 19 two-phase regions, and 9 three-phase regions. One new ternary compound τ was discovered. The homogeneity ranges for the phases in this system are established. Three miscibility gaps were observed, corresponding to Cr solid dissolved in HCP(Ru), Nb solid dissolved in HCP(Ru) and Ru solid dissolved in BCC(Cr),respectively. The miscibility gap of Nb and Cr solid dissolved in HCP(Ru) go through each other.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Mo–Ni–Zr system at 1100°C was investigated by characterization of eight equilibrium alloys. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) were used to identify the stable phases and obtain their compositions. The Mo–Ni–Zr system was then optimized by means of CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) technique with the consideration of experimental data obtained in the present work and reported in the literature. The liquid, fcc, bcc and hcp solution phases, were modeled with (sub-)regular solution model. The compound Zr65Mo18−xNi16.5+x (τ1, cF96-Ti2Ni) was described as Zr2(Mo, Ni) based on its crystal structure and solubility range. While τ2 (Zr65Mo27.3Ni7.7) phase was modeled as a stoichiometric compound due to its limited homogeneity range. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters for the Mo–Ni–Zr system was finally obtained. Comprehensive comparisons between the calculated and experimental phase diagram data show that the experimental information is satisfactorily accounted for by the present thermodynamic description. The liquidus projection and reaction scheme of the Mo–Ni–Zr system were also generated by using the present thermodynamic parameters.

Abstract:Phase equilibria in the Fe-Nb-Zr system at 1,200 A degrees C were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. Extensive NbFe2 domain was proposed in the current work. This compound existed in the composition range from 35 at% to 73 at% Fe, 12 at% to 32 at% Nb, and 0 to 32 at% Zr. In the present work, four three-phase regions (1) beta-(Nb,Zr) + NbFe + NbFe2, (2) beta-(Nb,Zr) + NbFe2 + Liquid, (3) NbFe2 + Liquid + ZrFe2, and (4) ZrFe2 + Fe + NbFe2, were established.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Ni-Sn-Zn ternary system at 500°C was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS). A new ternary compound with a composition of Ni36Sn42Zn22 (in at.%) was discovered in the present study. The space group of this compound is P \( \overline{\textit{4}}\) 3m with lattice parameter a = 0.88283(4) nm. Two ternary phases, i.e., τ1 and τ2, which are derived from α′-Ni3Sn2 and β-NiZn, respectively, were observed to be present at 500°C. The solubility of Sn in Ni2Zn11 was determined to be about 3.5 at.%, and that of Zn in Ni3Sn to be about 5 at.%.

Abstract:The phase equilibria in the Zr–ZrCo–ZrNi system at subsolidus temperature and at 900 and 800°C were first studied using physicochemical analysis methods, and solidus surfaces and isothermal sections at 900 and 800°C were constructed. Isomorphic Zr2Co and Zr2Ni compounds with a tetragonal crystal structure of AlCu2 (θ) type form a continuous series of solid solutions dividing the Zr–ZrCo–ZrNi system into two subsystems: Zr–Zr2Co–Zr2Ni and ZrCo–ZrNi–Zr2Ni–Zr2Co. The equilibria on the solidus surface of the Zr–Zr2Co–ZrCo–Zr2Ni system and at 900°C differ significantly. This is associated with the Zr3Co-based η phase formed by peritectoid reaction 〈β − Zr〉 + 〈Zr2Co〉 → η at 980°C, being close to theL ↔ θ + β eutectic crystallization temperature (986°C), in the binary Zr–Co system. At 900 and 800°C, the 𝜂 phase dissolves up to 14.5% Ni. The solidus surface of the ternary Zr2Co–Zr2Ni–ZrCo–ZrNi system shows a three-phase equilibrium of the θ phase with the ZrCo (δ) and ZrNi (δ2) phases of the ZrCo–ZrNi quasibinary section: δ + δ2 + θ. The plane of this tie-line triangle extends significantly at 900 and 800°C as the solubility of nickel in the cubic ZrCo-based phase of CsCl type changes. At room temperature, all alloys of the ZrCo–ZrNi–Zr2Ni–Zr2Co subsystem should contain three phases: δ + δ2 + θ. The solidus surface of the Zr–ZrCo ZrNi system is thus completed by surfaces corresponding to the homogeneity regions of the δ, δ2, δ, and β phases, θ + δ + δ2 tie-line triangle plane, and ruled surfaces representing the upper boundary of the two-phase θ + δ2, θ + δ, and θ + δ volumes. At 900 and 800°C, two three-phase equilibria, η + θ + β and δ + δ2 + θ, are observed in the system.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Mn-Zr-Si ternary system at 600 degrees C was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive analysis. Results show that there is a new ternary compound Mn4Si7Zr4 with cell parameters of a=1.3027 nm, c=0.515 nm, in the Mn-Zr-Si ternary system whose structure is similar to the tetragonal structure of Fe4Si7Zr4. No evidence is found to support the existence of Zr3Si at 600 degrees C, which is taken as a stable phase in the previous Zr-Si system. Moreover, XRD and SEM/EDS reveal that Zr5Si3 is a stable phase at 600 degrees C. In addition, MnSi2Zr and MnSiZr are confirmed to be stable at 600 degrees C while Mn4Si6Zr3 is not found in the present work.

Abstract:Ag-Cr-Zr alloy is a promising Zr-based alloy with excellent strength and hardness. Lack of investigations on phase equilibria and solidified microstructure of the Ag-Cr-Zr system limits the design of high-performance Zr-based alloys. Solidified microstructure and phase transition temperature in the Ag-Cr-Zr system are experimentally investigated using scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The microstructure of the ca-cast Ag-Cr-Zr is investigated in detail, and a liquid miscibility gap extending from Ag-Cr binary system is measured. The phase transition temperatures along three vertical sections are determined. Based on these experimental results and critical literature review, a thermodynamic modeling of the Ag-Cr and Ag-Cr-Zr systems was constructed by CALPHAD method, and the calculated phase diagram is in accordance with the experimental data. Besides, the Scheil solidification is simulated and the simulated results agree with the observed solidified microstructure. The reaction scheme for the whole Ag-Cr-Zr ternary system is calculated for the first time. This work not only fills in the gap in the thermodynamic descriptions of the Ag-Cr-Zr system, but also provides a hybrid approach of thermodynamic calculations and key experiments for the sake of obtaining the desired solidification microstructure.

Abstract:The Ni–Ni5Zr eutectic alloy becomes a promising structural material owing to its high strength and desirable plasticity. However, those nominal eutectic alloys with previously assumed compositions of Ni-8.8 at.% Zr and Ni-9.0 at.% Zr were found to involve a considerable amount of primary (Ni) phase. Hereby, an experimental study was conducted by differential scanning calorimetry and careful electron microscopy to clarify the situation. A total of 13 alloys in the composition range of 8.8 ~ 11.0 at.% Zr were explored with respect to their phase transition temperatures and microstructure evolution characteristics. The Ni-9.9 at.% Zr alloy exhibited primary (Ni) phase, whereas the Ni-10.1 at.% Zr alloy displayed primary Ni5Zr phase. Finally, the eutectic point was determined as Ni-10.0 at.% Zr alloy with a transition temperature of 1467 K, and the relevant part of Ni–Zr phase diagram was revised accordingly.

Abstract:The 600 °C isothermal section of the Zn-Co-Sb ternary system has been determined experimentally by means of scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry and x-ray diffraction. Nine three-phase regions could be confirmed in the isothermal section at 600 °C. Moreover, a new ternary compound named CoSbZn was positively identified for the first time in this study, containing 25.8 to 39.0 at.% Co, 28.9 to 36.4 at.% Zn and 31.4 to 38.0 at.% Sb. The experimental results indicated that the maximum solubility of Co in the L phase was less than 2.4 at.%.

Abstract:Ti-Cr-V-based alloys have been utilized across various domains, including aerospace structural and functional materials and hydrogen storage materials. Investigating the phase relations in the Ti-Cr-V system is significant in supporting the material design for these applications. In the present work, the isothermal sections at 1000, 1100, and 1200 °C for the Ti-Cr-V system were precisely determined through a systematic investigation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The phase region of Cr2Ti was entirely elucidated for the first time. As the temperature decreased from 1200 to 1000 °C, the V solubility range of Cr2Ti increased from 5.3 wt.% to 10.0 wt.%, while the Ti solubility range essentially remained constant at approximately 31.0–33.9 wt.%. In addition, it was suggested that the stable structure of Cr2Ti was C36 at 1200 °C and C15 at 1000 and 1100 °C. The present work will support thermodynamic re-assessment research.

Abstract:In the present work, the Co-rich corner (40–100 at% Co) of the isothermal sections at 800 and 900 °C for the Co-Cr-Ti system was determined through a systematic investigation using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Compared with previous reports, the ternary extensions of the binary phases were elucidated, such as the L1 2 phase (i.e., Co 3 Ti). Notably, the χ phase (i.e., Co 4 Cr 2 Ti) was not detected from 750 to 900 °C, which was previously considered a stable phase in this temperature range. It was experimentally proven that the χ phase was observed in the previous reports due to short-term homogenization at 1100–1300 °C, followed by short-term and low-temperature annealing. The homogenization significantly slowed down the decomposition of χ during annealing, which was retained from the as-cast state. The present study will support the database development of the Co-Cr-Ti system and aid in the design of L1 2 -strengthened Co-based alloys.

Abstract:Phase diagrams of two isothermal sections of the Ni–Ti–Ta ternary system at 1000 and 1200 °C in a full composition range were determined by X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The experimental results indicated a ternary compound τ phase with low solid solubility and composition ranges of (16.3–22.4) at.% Ta, (15.9–24.1) at.% Ti and (58.5–60.0) at.% Ni at 1000 °C. The two terminal solid solutions (bcc-(Ta) and β-Ti) formed a continuous solid solution at 1000 and 1200 °C. A certain amount of Ti can dissolve into Ni–Ta intermetallic compounds near the Ni–Ta side, with the highest value of 21.9 at.% observed in the Ni2Ta compound at 1000 °C.

Abstract:Abstract The isothermal section at 1 050 °C and the liquidus projection in the Co-rich portion of the ternary Co–Ti–Zr system were determined. The microstructures and solidification paths of the as-cast alloys were established experimentally. The constituent phases and their compositions of both as-cast and heat-treated alloys were investigated by means of optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. No ternary compound was observed. For the Co-rich portion of the isothermal section at 1 050 °C, there are four three-phase regions, αCo + TiCo3 + TiCo2 (h), αCo + TiCo2 (h) + (Ti,Zr)Co2 (c), αCo + (Ti,Zr)Co2 (c) + Zr6Co23 and αCo + Zr2Co11 + Zr6Co23. For the investigated liquidus projection, there exist six primary crystallization fields: αCo, TiCo3, TiCo2 (h), (Ti,Zr)Co2 (c), Zr2Co11 and Zr6Co23; three transition invariant reactions, L + αCo → TiCo3 + TiCo2 (h), L + (Ti,Zr)Co2 (c) → αCo + TiCo2 (h), and L + Zr6Co23 → αCo + Zr2Co11; and one eutectic invariant reaction of L → αCo + (Ti,Zr)Co2 (c) + Zr6Co23.

Abstract:The Sm–Ni–Al phase relationships at 800 °C have been investigated by using several well–focused experimental techniques such as X–Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), Light Optical Microscopy (LOM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Microprobe Analysis (EPMA). The isothermal section of the Sm–Ni–Al system at 800 °C was constructed according to the present experimental results. More than 50 alloys have been synthesized and characterized in the 30–100 at.% Al region. At 800 °C, 9 intermetallic phases have been confirmed, characterized and their relationships have been established. In the Al-rich corner, the presence of two ternary invariant reactions have been postulated whilst along the 16.67 at.% Sm isopleth, the presence of two structurally related extended solid solutions have been observed. Abstract:The isothermal steam oxidation behavior of Cr-coated Zr-1Nb alloy at 1350 °C and 1400 °C was investigated. The temperatures are above the Cr-Zr eutectic temperature. The reliability of the experimental setup and methodology was confirmed by conducting isothermal steam oxidation experiments on bare Zr-1Nb specimens at 1100∼1400 °C, and the corresponding oxidation kinetics correlation was obtained. After the eutectic-oxidation reaction, the surface of the coated specimens exhibited a "crocodile skin" morphology composed of "ridges" and "hollows", which was attributed to the non-uniform eutectic reaction. Due to the much higher O affinity of Zr compared to Cr, and the higher solubility of Cr in β-Zr compared to α-Zr(O) and ZrO 2 , the ZrO 2 and α-Zr(O) layers initially grew on the Cr-Zr eutectic during oxidation. Cr continuously diffused inward and eventually precipitated as Cr-rich phases within the metallic matrix. Three types of Cr-rich phases were observed, with varying oxygen content and reflecting the oxidation process of the Cr-rich phases. The Cr-rich phases were ultimately oxidized into a mixture of Cr 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 . The parabolic weight gain rates for the oxidation of Cr-Zr eutectic are compared with the oxidation kinetics correlation derived from the bare Zr-1Nb specimens, and the model applicability of the oxidation kinetics correlations of Zr alloys in the simulations of Cr-Zr eutectic-oxidation reaction is discussed.
