Abstract:A complex inorganic–polymer hybrid material of polyimide/titania–silica with photolithographic property was prepared by sol–gel process. Polyimide (PI) was based on benzophone-3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4′-diamino-3,3′-dimethyl-diphenylmethane (MMDA) and is negatively photosensitive. The introduction of titania leads to increased refractive index while the introduction of silica leads to improved thermal stability of the hybrid.

Abstract:A new organic-inorganic hybrid material, which shows photo-induced reduction of refractive index as well as volume contraction, is prepared using a sol-gel method.This material is coated on a Si substrate by spin-coating to manufacture film.After irradiated by ultraviolet (UV) light with a deuterium lamp for 5 h, the thickness of film decreases largely by 55%, and the refractive index of film changes from 1.484 to 1.445 at 550 nm.The film's optical thickness exhibits an exponential change with the increasing irradiation time.Futhermore, the photo-patternning of the organic-inorganic hybrid film without any further process (wet etching and thermal curing) is performed utilizing the volume contraction on UV-light irradiation.This film has potential applications for fabrication of patterned filter array and apodizing filter by direct light writing, and also demonstrates good temperature stability and immunity to visible light exposure.

Abstract:PI/SiO2 hybrid films were prepared with an improved sol-gel process, and PI/SiO2 nanocomposite films were successfully prepared by blending the modified SiO2 particles into PAA solution respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the structure and properties of the obtained films. The results confirmed the formation of Si—O—Si network and the conversion from PAA into polyimide in both hybrid and nanocomposite films. It was found that SiO2 was dispersed more finely and homogenously in hybrid films. With the increase of SiO2 content, the thermal stability decreased in both films. Although both hybrid and nanocomposite films showed the same behavior, the hyprid films should be more promising for electrical applications due to its good thermal stability, fine dispersibility and low moisture absorption.
Polyimide/silica/titania Nanohybrids Via a Novel Non-Hydrolytic Sol–gel Route

Abstract:Polyimide/silica/titania hybrid films were prepared via a non-hydrolytic sol–gel route. Silicic acid and titanium tetrachloride were used as the precursors of silica and titania, respectively. The absorption band of Si–O–Ti bonds in FTIR spectra of the hybrid films revealed the formation of the hybrid inorganic network between SiO2 and TiO2. Scanning electron microscopy results indicated that the nanometer-scaled inorganic domains were homogeneously dispersed in polyimide matrix due to the introduction of silica-stabilized TiO2 and the interactions between organic and inorganic phases. The studies on the optical properties of the hybrid films indicated the red-shift of the absorption band increased with increasing TiO2 content, while all the hybrid films maintained their transparencies. The surface resistances of the hybrid samples decreased with increasing TiO2 content. The thermal decomposition temperature of the ternary hybrid films decreased slightly with increasing TiO2 content. This kind of hybrid materials may have potential application in the preparation of opto-electronic devices.

Abstract:A series of hybrid polyimide-silica hybrids films were prepared by a sol-gel process via the blending of tetrathoxysilane and a coupling reagent in a pyromellitic anhydride/4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) based poly(amic acid) solution in N,N-dimethylacetamide, the casting of the films, the evaporation of the solvent, and thermal imidization, in that order. Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the structure of the obtained hybrids. The dispersion of silica in the hybrids was suggested to be in two states: a dominant network structure and minor discrete aggregate particles. On the basis of the network structure, the mechanical behavior of the hybrids was interpreted. An investigation of the dielectric properties revealed that the dielectric constant of the hybrids increased slowly with the concentration of SiO2. For hybrid films containing 30 wt % SiO2, the constant increased to 4.2 from the value of 3.2 for pure polyimide. Moreover, the incomplete hydrolysis and decomposition of tetrathoxysilane and the coupling reagent were the main factors contributing to the thermal stability and the uncertainty of the dielectric constant of the hybrids. Abstract:A photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) containing TiO2 nano particles was prepared by the sol–gel method. The PSPI is based on benzophenone-3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4′-diamino-3,3′-dimethyldiphenylmethane (MMDA) and is intrinsically photosensitive. The chemical and morphological structure of the hybrid materials was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TiO2 particles are well dispersed in the PI matrix and 50nm in diameter. The obtained hybrids exhibit good photolithographic properties. The introduction of nanometer TiO2 leads to an increased refractive index and an increased glass transition temperature. The materials may have potential application in the preparation of optical devices.

Abstract:Homogeneous organic-inorganic hybrid materials with excellent thermal and optical performance were successfully prepared via the mixing of (3-methacrylo-xypropyl)trimethoxysilane-capped acrylic resin with titania synthesized by sol-gel approaches. The effects of the titania content, amount of water, and pH in the sol-gel and the ratio of the solvents (butyl acetate and ethanol) on the structures and properties of the hybrid materials were studied. More titania, more water, and base catalysis in the sol-gel process and a higher ratio of butyl acetate to ethanol for the hybrids led to a larger size and a more compact structure of the titania phase. Increasing the titania content dramatically improved the glass-transition temperature, UV-shielding properties, and refractive index for the hybrid materials, and it did not reduce their optical transparency. In general, better thermal stability and optical properties were achieved for the hybrid materials prepared with less water, lower pH values (e.g., acidic or neutral conditions), and a lower ratio of butyl acetate to ethanol. Abstract:Polyester polyol/titania hybrid resins and their corresponding polyurethane/titania hybrid films were prepared by in situ method via sol–gel process of titanium n-butoxide under acidic condition. The effects of the contents and types of titania sol on the microstructure and some mechanical and optical properties of the hybrids were investigated. It was found that introducing titania into the resin could increase some physical properties such as the viscosity of the resin, modulus, Tg, mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, hardness and UV absorbance, but different titania sols obtained from various molar ratios of water to titanium n-butoxide had an obvious influence on the microstructure and properties of the hybrid films.

Abstract:Sol-gel derived Poly(methyl methacrylate)-titania hybrid materials were synthesized by using acrylic acid or allyl acetylacetone (3-allyl-2,4-pentanedione) as coupling agents. Titanium butoxide modified with acrylic acid (or titanium isopropoxide modified with allyl acetylacetone) was hydrolyzed to produce a titania network, and then poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chains formed in situ through a radical polymerization were chemically bonded to the forming titania network to synthesize a hybrid material. Transparent hybrid materials with different contents of titania were achieved. With the increase of the titania content, the colors of the products changed from yellow to dark red. The synthesis process was investigated step by step by using FTIR spectroscopy, and the experimental results demonstrated that acrylate or acetylacetonato groups bound to titanium remain in the final hybrid materials. The thermal stability of the hybrid materials was considerably improved relative to pure PMMA. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analyses showed the hybrid materials are porous and pore diameters vary from 1 Onm to I 00nm. The hybrid materials using allyl acetylacetone as the coupling agent exhibited thermochromic effects that both pure PMMA and titania do not have.

Abstract:Homogeneous organic–inorganic hybrid materials with high performance were successfully prepared by mixing (3-methacryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPMS) capped acrylic resin with titania synthesized by sol–gel approaches. The effects of the titania content, the amount of water and nature of catalysts in the sol–gel as well as the ratios of mixed solvents of butyl acetate and ethanol on the structures and properties of the hybrid materials were studied. Higher titania content, larger amount of water and base catalysis in the sol–gel process, as well as the solvent with higher ratio of butyl acetate to ethanol for the hybrids caused larger size and less open structure of titania phase. The hardness, elastic modulus, thermal stability and refractive index for the hybrid materials improved dramatically with increasing titania content. In general, better prosperities, especially mechanical properties, were achieved for the hybrid prepared under lower water content, pH values (such as acid catalysis) and mB/mE ratio.

Abstract:Acrylic resin/titania organic-inorganic hybrid materials were successfully prepared by the in situ polymerization of acrylic monomers as well as by blending the synthesized thermoplastic acrylic resins with titania sols which were first prehydrolyzed from the precursor of Ti(O-n-Bu)(4). Effects of the amount of water and acid used for the preparation of TiO2 sols,the -COOH content in the acrylic resin and preparing methods on the structure of hybrid materials were investigated. The Soxhlet extracting experiments proved that crosslinking reactions took place between the organic phase and the inorganic phase, leading to homogenous and transparent hybrid systems. Meanwhile, higher -COOH content resulted in higher crosslinking degree. The SAXS results showed that there existed titania networks with a loose structure and nano-scale size within the hybrids. Moreover, larger amount of water and acid in the sol-gel process led to larger size and denser titania organic phase. In comparison with the in situ polymerization, blending method could prepare more homogeneous hybrids with mono-dispersed titania.

Abstract:Hybrid optical films of TiO2-triethoxysilane-capped polythiourethane (TCPTU) with high refractive indices have been prepared via an in situ sol-gel method. The high refractive index triethoxysilane-capped polythiourethane (TCPTU) was synthesized by polyaddition of the triethoxysilane-modified trimercaptothioethylamine (TMTEA) and 2,2'-dimercaptoethylsulfide (MES) with 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI). The titania content in the hybrid films can be adjusted from 0 to 80 wt.-% by the feed ratio of titania precursor [Ti(OBu)(4)] to polymer (TCPTU). Both FTIR and DSC analyses indicate that there is chemical bonding between the titania domain and the polymer chain. TGA results suggest that the titania of high content was successfully incorporated into polymer matrices and this series of hybrid films have good thermal properties. AFM measurements indicate that in the hybrid films the titania domains are of nanosize scale and the domain size averagely decrease from 60-80 nm to 5-20 nm with increasing content of titania, and the variation of surface roughness for the hybrid films has the same trend. These may be relative to the content of TCPTU and the interaction between titania and polymer (TCPTU). The refractive indices of the hybrid films at 632.8 nm increased from 1 632 to 1 879 as the titania content varied from 0 to 80 wt.%.

Abstract:Azodye-doped TiO(2)/ormosil hybrid materials for photonic applications were prepared by a low temperature sol-gel process from an organic-inorganic hybrid system. Acid-catalyzed solutions of gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane mixed with tetrapropyl orthotitanate were used as hybrid matrix precursors. The trans-cis-trans photoisomerization of azobenzene small molecules in sol-gel hybrid organic-inorganic matrices was induced by a photoirradiation with UV light and subsequent visible light. It was found that the hybrid film doped with azodyes and heated at a lower temperature was much better for applications in optical storage or optical switch. The planar waveguide properties of the hybrid films were also investigated by using a prism coupling technique. These results indicates that it is possible for the as prepared hybrid films to allow directly integrating on the same chip the optical storage or optical switch devices with the pump source.

Abstract:Multifunctional TiO2/ormosils organic-inorganic hybrid films that contain azobenzene and photosensitive groups are prepared by combining a low temperature sol-gel process and a spin-coating technique. The optical waveguide and the structural properties of the hybrid films are characterized and investigated respectively by different techniques. The photo-responsive properties of the hybrid films are induced by a photo-irradiation under UV light at a wavelength of 365 nm. Finally, micro-lens arrays are built in the hybrid films by using a UV soft imprint technique. These results indicate that the as prepared hybrid films with multifunctional photonic properties are promising candidates for integrated optics and photonic applications. which would allow the direct integration onto a single chip of the optical micro-elements and the optical data storage and optical switching devices. Abstract:Photo-patternable TiO2/organically modified silane hybrid films were prepared by combining a low-temperature sol–gel technique with a spinning–coating process. A ridge waveguide pattern was fabricated by ultraviolet light irradiation through a mask placed contact with the hybrid film in direct. Optical properties and photochemical activity of the hybrid film, including refractive index, thickness, propagation mode, and propagation loss, were studied and monitored by a prism coupling technique and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The change of transmittance with exposure time was also observed by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. These results indicate that the hybrid film is potential application for fabrication of photonic devices by ultraviolet light irradiation. The structure of ridge waveguide pattern was characterized and studied by scanning electron microscope and surface profiler. The fabrication process of the as-prepared photosensitive hybrid film as compared with traditional binary mask has a great amount of advantages of cost-effective, simple, and smooth surface over non-photosensitive material methods.

Abstract:Titania/organically modified silane hybrid thin films for photonic applications were prepared by combining a low temperature sol-gel technique and a spin-coating process from an organic-inorganic hybrid system. Effects of the titanium content and heat treatment temperature on the structural and optical properties of the hybrid thin films were characterized by atomic force microscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. It is found that the optical and microstructural properties of the hybrid thin films depend on the heat-treatment temperature and titanium molar contents. The thickness and the refractive index of the hybrid thin films were also measured and found to be related to the heat treatment temperature and titanium molar content. These results indicate that a dense and high transparent hybrid thin film can be obtained at a low heat treatment temperature. Potential photonic device structural patterns can easily fabricated from the as-prepared hybrid thin films by using etching process.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials are attractive due to the combination of properties from the two distinct types of materials. In this work, transparent titania-polydimethylsiloxane hybrid materials with up to 15.5 vol. % TiO₂ content were prepared by an in situ non-aqueous method using titanium (IV) isopropoxide and hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane as precursors. Spectroscopy (Fourier transform infrared, Raman, Ultraviolet-visible, ellipsometry) and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis allowed to describe in detail the structure and the optical properties of the nanocomposites. Titanium alkoxide was successfully used as a cross-linker and titania-like nanodomains with an average size of approximately 4 nm were shown to form during the process. The resulting hybrid nanocomposites exhibit high transparency and tunable refractive index from 1.42 up to 1.56, depending on the titania content.

Abstract:Polymer/nanocrystal bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells have attracted substantial interest because the hybrid active layer combines the advantages of inorganic materials and polymers. In this work, a porous TiO2 was prepared via the sol-gel method with a polyethylene glycol 2000 (PEG2000) template. A kind of polymer/inorganic solar cell based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/TiO2 was fabricated on the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate and the structure of device was ITO/TiO2/P3HT/Au. The device showed the performance with a short circuit current (J(SC)) of 1.29 mA/cm(2), an open circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.55 V and a fill factor (FF) of 28.7%.

Abstract:Polyimide-silica (PI-SiO2) hybrids with a nanostructure was obtained using the nonaqueous sol-gel process by polycondensation of phenyltriethoxysilane in a polyamic acid solution. Self-catalyzed hydrolysis of phenyl-substituted akoxysilane and modification on the polyimide structure are applied and result in highly compatible PI-SiO2 hybrids. Transparent PI-SiO2, with a high silica content of about 45% was thus obtained. The prepared PI-SiO2, films were characterized by infrared spectrometry, Si-29-NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. These characterizations showed the silica influence on the properties of the hybrid. The thermal expansion coefficient of the PI-SiO2, and the temperature correlation were also established for probing the potential for application. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
