Abstract:The cathode contact material is one of the main components in planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack for its role in maintaining stable electrical connection and forming protection coating for metallic interconnect. Aiming at studying the oxidation kinetics of Fe-16Cr alloy, the LaCo0.6Ni0.4O3-δ (LCN) with different particle sizes are chosen as in-situ protective coating to investigate their heat resistant effect at 750 °C for up to 500 h. The oxidation rates of the coated alloy are approximately lowered to a quarter compared to that of the bare alloy. The oxidized specimens are characterized to obtain the morphology, thickness, composition and phase structure of the oxide scales. The area specific resistances contributed by the oxide scale are 0.101 Ω cm2 and 0.062 Ω cm2 for the bare and coated alloy, respectively, which is consistent with oxidation kinetic plots. Furthermore, a degradation test of 5-cell stack is conducted to evaluate the effect of in-situ protective coating on oxidation of Fe-16Cr alloy in real SOFC operation condition. The results reveal that the presence of the LCN layer can effectively improve the long term operation stability for SOFC stack.
